Why Ederson? 5.5m for 3.5ppg. He's an awful FPL pick, I don't get why someone as smart as you would go for him

You’re very kind but for me city have far and away the best fixtures to start the season defensively and I currently am not a massive fan of any of the cheaper options.
Believe city were mostly very unlucky for clean sheets last season so a quick gamble to start the season. If I decide I need TAA though he’ll be straight out the draft he’s most definitely the 11th pick in the team.

Who have you got in goal?

Ok lets put it this way. Ederson kept 11 CS last season, one fewer than Raya, which you could reasonably expect an improvement on. But his 5 save points across the season is probably not going to change. So how many extra CS would he have needed to overtake Raya's points total? 11.5. Save points are huge; I'll never pick Ederson. Flekken is the one I want, if only Raya could find a new club

Very fair argument. He’s just there for maybe the first few games until we know who this season’s Raya will be so hopefully he can accumulate the CSs while the easier fixtures are there and then I can move him on in the first WC if he still stinks

I’ve been thinking, as my team is looking set to go, that FPL could introduce a ‘Lock and Load’ chip.

The idea being that if you confirm your team and ‘Lock and Load’ it before say, 1 week and don’t touch it, you start with 10pts.

This would throw up some interesting quandaries for us engaged players.

      Haha, like this.

But love it more just for calling a chip 'lock and load'.

How about a chip where you pick say 3 players and if they all produce a return of some sort then all their points get doubled, but if one misses out then no double points?

      'The accumulator'....?

I think Onana should be compared only to other goalkeepers. I'm not a subscriber to coverage. I personally don't think Onana's price affects Shaw in any way. If both are good options in isolation, compared to alternatives in their position, get both.

Strong price for Onana. But the top scoring keeper last season was a 4.5m Brentford keeper, so I don't want to dismiss other options straight away. Save points account for almost 50% of a goalkeepers points on average.

With Onana and Mount, United will be able to keep possession, transition up the pitch, and press far easier. So we might see less of a deep block this season, a style that often breeds save points from many low xG shots, and more of a transition to a City style of defending, where possession and pressing become the primary method of defending. As we've seen with Ederson, it's not a style that produces many save points.

Personally still leaning towards Flekken, who claims he has been promised he would become number one. Source: https://sportwitness.co.uk/brentford-signing-reveals-promises-made-transfer-lucrative-contract-good-turn/

Yeah I'm still more interested in Flekken too. Hoping that Brentford's defensive style of conceding quite a lot of low xG shots & few big chances means Flekken will rake in the save points as Raya did. Onana's distribution could be good for bonus but to me that's a bit more unpredictable & depends on 0-0 / 1-0 scorelines

For my team it came down to,

      Flekken, Shaw, Botman(1st sub) or

      Onana, Porro, Henry(1st sub)

For the way my teams set up, the second option favours it.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years
        10 months, 14 days ago

Who do you think scores more points between Botman and Henry? And does picking Flekken change that answer?

Porro has a high ceiling, but I personally wouldn't go near the Spurs defence just yet. The last time they played in a back 4, they were slapped for 6 goals. I don't think this transition to a new style will go smoothly from the start. Could be a Rangnick-style season, where the players do not suit the brand of football they're trying to play.

        1. The Wanton Trader

Shifting Flekken means I can have Henry, who I prefer as I don’t want to double up on Brentford defence.

I really wanted to fit Porro in my team too for his attacking merits, rather than defensive.
He produced 10 crosses in 45 mins v West Ham in the last pre season game( I know they lost 3-2) 🙂
For context, this is what I’m on.

          Onana
          Trent/Gabriel/Porro/Estu
          Rash/Saka/BrunoF/Marti/Eze
          Haaland
          Areola/Henry/4.5s

I know it's potentially a waste of a Chelsea spot, but I quite like the idea of having James in my team and then having Gusto for 4.0m on the bench for whenever James gets injured. Is this a good idea?

Looks a decent option to me. I think the only viable triple up it blocks is James, Chilwell & Nkunku. If you don't have the funds in defence for 11m on Chelsea FBs then it shouldn't be a problem. Also seems unlikely Chelsea gel fast enough for a triple up to be desirable

      1. abcdef3

Was expecting this idea to be laughed at, pleasantly surprised. Only thing potentially stopping me is how nice Chelsea's games are from week 3 onwards. I think a Chelsea triple up could be nice in that period

I mean, its already started with James. Reports of injury, then illness; not travelling to US, then joining late... if this continues & he's not able to build up his fitness in their friendlies then Gusto is very much an option. I would probably prefer to just go for Chilwell instead (if fit) but I can definitely see Gusto getting some starts this season

    3. Arteta
      • 8 Years
      10 months, 14 days ago

I don't think that's a good idea. You can easily downgrade James at any time to almost anyone if he gets injured or ill. At the same time, you can have a £4.0m starter on your bench and spread the money across the team. What if there comes a week when James is fine but two other defenders get sick or something? Gusto will get you either 0 or 1 point off the bench.

Chelsea's spots could be precious in a few months if Pochettino massively improves them. I wouldn't rule out a triple-up in the future (Kepa, Colwill, Silva, James, Chilwell, Sterling, Mudryk, Nkunku, Jackson). Who knows who will have a good season?

Livramento to Newcastle looks like interesting prospect. Can play on both the left and right so could be a great option if he can establish himself as a regular starter. Unlikely to replace Trippier but i think he’s an upgrade on Burn / Targett if he can get back to his pre-injury form.

    For ex:

FantasyFootball Fix projection points for GWs1-8 actually predicts the best £4.5m GK is better than all £5.0 GKs in this period and they are also far superior to the £5.5m GKs in terms of value.
    Expected points GW 1-8 / Price=
    best £4.5m = 7.49
    best £5.0m = 6.62
    best £5.5m = 6.25

For comparison the same projected value for this period on FF Hub =
    best £4.5m = 6.98
    best £5.0m = 6.34
    best £5.5m = 6.49

So multiple point projection tools show £4.5m GK to be the best starting option.

Hub had Lamptey as the highest-scoring 4.5 defender over the first 4 GWs last year, and most of their videos had people with him in their team even though he wasn't likely to even start.

        Just stirring the pot... 😀

If Flekken had the same projected points as Raya he would top the list as the only GK with value over 5

      Interesting, cheers.

Although I’d rather not make a GK transfer, given the uncertainty surrounding Brighton and Brentford for that position, and Fulham as a club more broadly (Mitrovic, Silva), I think I’ll go Ramsdale for now.

Once it becomes clear who starts etc, I would be tempted to move Ramsdale on after the first 4.

With Rice protecting in front, and given the fixtures I think cleansheets and save points will be high.

What I’m saying is I think the fixtures are good, but against teams who will create chances, but these chances will be lower XG due to Arsenal solid defensively with Saliba and Rice.

    Poch on Sterling:
"I think he's an important player for us. He's in our plan. He can provide to the team many different things. We are confident that we can get the best from him to help the team to achieve what we want."

That helps his xMins. Now we just need signs that Chelsea are actually a good team now, capable of scoring goals. Atm, their central midfield is barren, and their team is full of fresh faces who haven't played together before.

Still a wait and see for me, but promising words from Poch. I do like Sterling.

Did you watch the pre-season game? Chilwell was playing like a winger, underlapping into shooting positions, so attacking!

He's at the top of my watchlist, I really like him, huge ceiling. But hard to start there when Chelsea are so incomplete as a team...

I want signs that Chilwell and Sterling are options, but Chelsea have to improve their squad and chemistry first, or established Premier League teams like Villa and Brentford will roll over them imo.

No. Not watched any football since the Cup Final, so nice to hear.

I have him at the minute, just a question whether to start him against Liv week 1. Got a 4.5 who has a decent fixture that week too so undecided.

Yeah those were my worries. Could potentially downgrade Andreas to 4.5 and upgrade Enciso to Mitoma, playing a 442 with Henry brought on.

    https://www.arsenal.com/news/arteta-and-zinchenko-preview-united-clash

On if Thomas Partey and Declan Rice can play together: "Yeah, they can play together and that was in my plans. If you want to improve the squad and have more quality, we need players that can play together, but we need players in the same position that have to fight for their places. It’s something that we haven’t had over the last few years and we wanted to improve that, and that’s why we brought Declan as well."

The quotes in this article pretty much confirm that Partey is staying. Unless a crazy offer from Saudi Arabia arrives, he is going to stay at the club. Arteta is now spoiled for options. The more I think about it, the more I believe that no one will be guaranteed to play 90 minutes this season when the other competitions start except Ramsdale. Five subs make it tricky, and it will probably depend on their daily performances. There's also no need to run the best players into the ground like last year. Rotation and rest have a lot of positives, to be fair.

Makes me even more sad that my 4 Arse attack team is already a no-go due to Fofana injury!

I would say, though, that these comments from Arteta are quite meaningless. It's the same message that has been leaking out of Arsenal since the start of the window. And the same message they would have if they were preparing for his potential exit.

Makes sense. Depth was the killer for them last season. Arteta seems to be building a good squad.

Gives him more tactical options too. Some games might suit two DMs, others may require a lone pivot. He could be Pep II this season, in terms of team selection.

I like it, personally. Another option would be to go from
        Bruno, Flekken, Beyer/Bell to
        Foden, Onana, Botman.

That gives you a nice option off the bench in Botman, especially once Newcastle's fixtures clear up. If Foden is nailed, he could easily be one of the bargains of the year.

Although a 4.5 keeper will probably outscore the premiums, it's impossible to know who that will be. Every season a different team and player emerges with the mystical cocktail of clean sheets, save points, pen saves and BPs. Raya, Martinez, Fabianski, Pope...

So saying "4.5 keepers outscore 5.0 keepers, so I'm going for Trafford!", is clearly nonsense... But may be right!

I'm new to the RMT and 6 GW predictions as I doubt normally do membership. How much faith can we put in them. I've never seen a team on here that goes with their highest scores. It rates a Salah team as much higher in the first six weeks than any other combo!

I don't really trust it above my own judgement tbh. Occasionally I'll look at something like GK value comparisons as above but I've never put my whole team - or multiple permutations thereof - into it trying to 'optimise' my score

                  Avoid the outrage.
I am aware of 1 Citeh and no Haaland but in my colors:
Onana: A [assing goalkeeper in what has been a good defense.
Areola: At 4.0 gives me a possible playing keeper but waiting on news.
TAA: cannot be ignored as he is capable of midfield points with clean sheets. Get through Chelsea and captain GW2
Estupinan: Good 3 fixtures; plays forward and everyone else has him. More a shield than a personal pick.
Gabriel: Easy fixture with an attacking threat at 5 mil. Jury out atm with Timber joining.
Mbeumo: Penalties, form and no Toney. Wissa may still appeal.
Bruno: All he needs is someone getting on the end of his creative skills. Hopefully more pens this year.
Martinelli: Nobody can convince me of him being worse than Saka. Minutes risk maybe but my "differential"
Foden: Break out year for him and other Citeh players leaving. First on my team sheet.
Salah: The big risk. I am gambling on last years form vs Haaland with injury and away performances from Haaland swaying me.
Nkunku: dependent on pre season he is my fun pick with great fixtures after Pool. No Europe and maybe being ahead of the curve.
Jesus: As good as any Arsenal player IMO and a move in GW3 if Salah does not perform
Henry, Baldock and Fergie as bench cover with the thought of Brighton banging it. A little more thought maybe.

Shame there is no dislike button because I am sure it will grab negative attention. My season could be over quickly.
