FPL Rate My Team surgery with five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman

The 2023/24 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season is almost upon us, with champions Manchester City visiting newcomers Burnley in tonight’s big kick-off.

As a result, the questions on team drafts, specific players and differentials are coming thick and fast in the comments section, so we’ve asked five-time top 1k finisher and Scout’s Deputy Editor, Tom Freeman, to answer some of your conundrums over the next 60 minutes.

He’ll be on hand to first reply to requests from Premium Members in the Hot Topic below the line of this piece and will get through as many as he can until the next article goes up. If there’s time, Tom will also turn his attention to other requests in the comments section.

If you’d like to receive an email notification letting you know when future RMT Surgery’s are live, you can now do so. When editing your profile, under ‘Alerts & Notifications‘, you’ll find a section on ‘Email Notifications‘. In there is an option for ‘Rate My Team Surgery‘, check that box and you will receive an email letting you know when the surgery is about to go live.

You can, as ever, chip in with your own opinions on the RMT requests filtering through – and naturally, you’re free to ignore the article subject matter and talk about any other wider FPL topics that you’d normally be musing on.

Don’t forget that, if it’s an algorithmic answer you’re after rather than an opinion-based one, we also have a ‘Rate My Team’ tool available in the Premium Members Area.

    A) N.Jackson +1m
    B) Watkins

Is Watkins that good of a pick? Got Newcastle up first.

Watkins is proven, Jackson is not. Jackson is a wait and see in my view. Plus Emery has made Villa very attacking and Diaby should be very creative. Watkins seems the safer pick for GW1-3 at least.

      I have both.

Watkins is streaky but Villa are a good team.

Chelsea could be anything but Jackson could be an early bandwagon if they start well.

Which combination is better (Salah VS Salah-less)?

    A) Salah + João Pedro + Gvardiol
    B) Bruno + Watkins + Chilwell

    Cheers!

Gvardiol an unknown and just slightly shifts the needle to B. Pedro could cook and we know Salah’s potency.

      A for the gamble
      B for the track record

    Bottomed.

    Pickford (Turner)
    Gabriel Estu Botman (Chilwell Baldock)
    Rashford Bruno Saka Martinelli Mitoma
    Haaland Watkins (Osula)

Any recommendations? Really keen on Diaby and think Villa will do well but think Mitoma will outscore him first few weeks and is a safer pick.

    B) Salah, Eze (or any other mid of choice up to 6,5)

Diego Jota - I've been convinced to switch to him from Salah in the last 24hrs, for the following reasons:

    1) He's more explosive
    2) He's bang on form and injury free (currently)
    3) He's one of those FPL players where you have a v limited window for hauls (snooze you lose).
    4) The obvious one...enables a better spread of funds for better picks across the rest of the team

Yes it comes with risk in that he is injury prone and not nailed, but pre-season form makes him look fairly safe for the few few gw's at least, so I'm in (I think!).

I'm thinking him over Eze. I reckon he bangs in both games if given the opportunity while you've only got Eze who can do so vs. Sheff Utd, less so Arsenal.

I've currently got Jota and Eze in a 5 man midfield (352):

Ha had 12 starts last season, and I'd say he's got more competition this year. But I'm eyeing him aswell, but that might be the strongest reason I'm not picking him.

Makes a big difference if Jota is a caotain option gw2 instead if Salah..

Was looking at including him, but risk of rotation, playing wide etc put me off.

Yes this is my final decicion.

Okey cokey with Martinelli , but Jota has to play against easier sides.

      Klopp loves his press.

Salah>Gapko>Jota>Diaz>Nunez in starts, so Jota will start most of the time

He played almost 1000 minutes more than Saliba last season and scored only 29 points more, which gave a total of 1 bonus point over Saliba.

Doesn't seem like the stats are in his favour..

For those debating either Martinelli or Odegaard, I've done a bit of digging into their attacking exploits last season against the first six opponents of this season and it threw up an interesting outcome.

Arsenal vs. 6 opponents in 23/24:

    Martinelli / Odegaard

    Nott'm Forest (h) 1 home goal / 1 home goal
Crystal Palace (a) 1 away goal / 0 goals scored
    Fulham (h) 1 away goal / 1 home goal + 1 away goal
Man Utd (h) 0 goals scored / 1 home assist
    Everton (a) 2 home goals / 1 home goal
    Spurs (h) 1 home assist / 1 away goal

    In summary:
    Martinelli Odegaard
    H A H A
    G 3 2 3 2
    A 1 0 1 0

Exactly the same record vs. Arsenal's first opponents in 23/24. I guess the deciding factor comes down primarily to minutes and then level of explosiveness. Toughie.

Odegaard has been subbed off in the past, many acting like he didnt, with Havertz there now he could come off just as much as Martinelli when Arteta wants to close game out with Partey and Rice.

Squad is big now, can't predict mins based on last season anymore, Arteta has a lot of options where the quality doesn't drop, was not the case last season.

Yeah, this is it, pointless trying to base it on mins from last year when the landscape of the squad is completely different.

A general point re the extra time in games, I’m not sure the top players are going to play 100 mins + every game, if anything we may see the 5 subs be used more so the big players can be protected, they’ll be playing every 3 days when Europe starts.

Thinking nailed players playing 100+ every 3 days feels a stretch.

We could see players like Haaland, Salah and Bruno come off a lot more around 70 if games are won by then.

The fact that players and managers are speaking about player welfare makes me doubt that they’ll start being run like dogs every 3 days.

    Torn between 343 or 352!

    Pickford
    Gabriel Estupinan Shaw
    Saka Salah Rashford Eze
    Haaland Jackson Pedro

    0ITB

    or

    Pickford
    Gabriel Estupinan Shaw
    Saka Rashford Martinelli Fernandes Eze
    Haaland Pedro

3.5M ITB (TAA could feature or upgrade Pedro to a Watkins/Jackson)

    Thoughts?

I suspect that he’s trying to extract more wages from Liverpool.

Brighton clearly don’t want to do business with Chelsea after the way they handled Colwill. But if they come in with a massive improvement on the 110 then they might sell to Chelsea.

Easier negotiation / sell. This is a bigger deal that will directly impact a rival club and a punishment to Chelsea.

Just to add - Liverpool may be able to pay the majority and structure of the fee in a better way than Chelsea.

Chelsea haven’t submitted an accepted offer.

Someone will emerge - they always do. Look at Andreas Pereira last year. Wouldn't expect a 4.5 forward to emerge though.

With Hojlund not ready to start yet and Garnacho's form in pre season relative to Martial, is there any merit in using Garnacho as a means of accommodating Salah while still keeping many template picks? Such as either of these drafts?

      Johnstone Turner
      Estupinan Gabriel Chilwell Baldock Beyer
      Rashford Saka Salah Garnacho Bruno
      Haaland Pedro Mubama
      0.5 ITB

      Johnstone Turner
      Estupinan Gabriel Chilwell Baldock Beyer
      Rashford Saka Salah Garnacho Mbeumo
      Haaland Pedro Jackson
      0.0 ITB

Second option could alternatively have Haaland Watkins Mubama.

Thanks! Yeah, you're probably right. I should add, was thinking Garnacho as a short term option to assess value options across all positions. If he performed well enough in the first few weeks, he may even get a price rise out of initial casual FPL players with so few MID options less than 6.5mil.

      4. il Brutto

Prediction models seem to prefer non-Salah teams, probably because Haaland is just such a strong captaincy option basically every week. Without captaincy the difference in price between Salah and other mid options just means those models don't see value in owning Salah. I'm personally going with Salah and I'm not sure it's that good of an idea to get too caught up on those models at the start of the season, because we only really have last seasons data go by and so many things can change from one season to another.

I also do wonder how fixture order effects our thinking. Would Salah's ownership change if we'd switch the two opening fixtures around and Salah would first have Bournemouth at home and then Chelsea away. In that scenario ManU for example would first play Spurs away and then Wolves at home. Would people still be hesitant to sacrifice Bruno in order to get Salah?

My logic for picking Salah is that it's super easy to switch from Salah to Bruno or whoever in GW3 if I need to, on the other hand if Salah is on fire at the start of the season you're looking at hits or wildcard to get him. There seems to be this perception now that going without Salah is somehow the sensible play that offers more flexibility, but how? I just don't se it.

What are peoples opinions? Mo Salah or No Salah?

Second guessing myself and would love to hear some thoughts!

      Johnstone
      Chilwell Gabriel Estupinan
Richarlison Salah (v) Saka Rashford Mbeumo
      Haaland (c) J.Pedro

      Turner Baldock Osula Kabore
      0.5 ITB for flexibility

Good to go? Richarlison to Maddison or Mitoma? Too much risk to rely on J. Pedro

Purely because I don’t put new signings into my GW1 team out of principle, I would not have Pedro. I’m also not sure what to expect from Spurs now Kane is gone, so Richarlison seems an unnecessary risk when Mitoma has excellent initial fixtures.
