Eliteserien Fantasy 2024 guide: Odds, fixtures, chips + more

Welcome to Eliteserien Fantasy 2024! It’s brilliant to see so many newcomers to the game, so I thought I’d try to put together a beginner’s guide of sorts to help get you oriented. Just bear in mind that I am very much included in the ‘beginner’ bracket myself…

I won’t spend much time covering the game format here as it should be immediately familiar to FPL players, with just a few twists on the chips:

  • ‘Attack! Attack!’ – double points for all your forwards
  • ‘Rich Uncle’ – a free hit chip with unlimited budget for that Gameweek
  • The self-explanatory ‘Two Captains’

The main aim of this article is to provide a basic orientation with Eliteserien’s top (and bottom) clubs and an overview of the initial schedule, which features early blanks and doubles.

BOOKIES’ ODDS TO WIN TITLE

So, first up, let’s have a look at the odds of winning the title this season, to give a rough idea of the expected hierarchy:

  1. Bodø/Glimt 2.15
  2. Molde 4.00
  3. Brann 4.50
  4. Viking 15
  5. Rosenborg 21
  6. Lillestrøm 25
  7. Sarpsborg 30
  8. Tromsø 100
  9. Odd 150
  10. Strømsgodset 150
  11. Haugesund 300
  12. HamKam 300
  13. Fredrikstad 300
  14. Sandefjord 300
  15. Kristiansund 500
  16. KFUM Oslo 750

Bodø/Glimt and Molde, fresh off their European adventures during the offseason for Norway, occupy the top two spots. A Bodø/Glimt victory would secure their fourth title in the last five seasons, while Molde won in 2022 & 2019.

Brann have had a much more turbulent recent history: third in 2018, relegated to the First Division in 2021, promoted in 2022 and second on their return to the Eliteserien last year.

Of the three promoted sides, minnows KFUM Oslo are making their first-ever appearance in the Eliteserien and this is clearly reflected by the bookies’ odds. Kristiansund return after just one season in the First Division, while Fredrikstad are fancied to be a slight cut above at joint 11th.

FIXTURE DIFFICULTY

Next, let’s have a look at a fixture ticker for the first eight Gameweeks (source: https://www.viewfantasystats.com/eliteserien/fdr-planner/)

Eliteserien Fantasy 2024

The predicted top three – Bodø, Molde and Brann – also sit atop the fixture ticker for the opening eight Gameweeks.

A Double Gameweek 3 for Brann and Molde, aligned with appealing fixtures before and after, makes these two clubs an excellent place to begin your draft. If your initial strategy is to attack the Double Gameweek, you might also want to consider supplementing Brann & Molde double/triple-ups with the mid-priced options from Odd and HamKam.

EARLY CHIP?

The early Double Gameweek also presents an opportunity to deploy one of your chips. Since Molde and Brann players are quite expensive, Rich Uncle could be an option to enable a frontline that includes last season’s top scorer Bård Finne (BRA, 11.5m) and Molde talisman Fredrik Gulbrandsen (11m).

Alternatively, ‘Rich Uncle’ could be held for Double Gameweek 10, which includes Bodø, Brann, Rosenborg and Tromsø.

‘Attack! Attack!’ is another option for Double Gameweek 3, as the current template frontline appears to be Finne, Gulbrandsen and Kirkevold (HAM, 6m). Odd forward Børven (7.5m) looks a promising alternative to Kirkevold if you want to triple up on doublers. Viking’s Salvesen (8.5m) has been banging in preseason, although tough fixtures Bodø and Brann in GWs 2 & 3 may be slightly off-putting.

ATTACK V DEFENCE

As always, when using a fixture ticker with just one colour per game, it’s worth considering where defensive difficulty and attacking difficulty are flattened.

To help identify the teams which might be, for example, a good fixture for your attackers but a bad fixture for your defenders, I’ve also put together a colour-coded chart of goals and goals conceded last season:

Eliteserien Fantasy 2024

The left-hand column presents the team in order of goals conceded to highlight fixture difficulty for attackers, while the right-hand column orders teams by goals scored as a metric for defensive fixture difficulty.

It’s worth noting that Viking and Sarpsborg 08 look like quite appealing fixtures for your attackers but much less so for your defenders. At the opposite extreme, Haugesund and Strømsgodset appear to be pretty solid defences but struggle in attack.

WHERE TO FIND STATS

As for the players, I’m far from the level of familiarity required to write a comprehensive watchlist. However, the official Fantasy site does allow you to sort by goals, assists, clean sheets, bonus points etc, which can be supplemented by further data from sites like Transfermarkt and Whoscored.

I’ve also come across a massively helpful pre-season minutes tracker here (it also notes goals and assists).

COMMUNITY MINI-LEAGUES

That’s pretty much it from me.

I’ll just conclude with a couple of mini-leagues to join (thanks to Mullered in Maenam and Mince N Tatties for running these):

See you below the line!

That’s great work Mentaculus. This is bound to attract more interest in the game which makes any effort like yours worthwhile. Ideal time for recruitment during the vacuum of the IB as well. Well done.

Maybe in addition. With more chips comes more skill!

I'd like to see a "park the bus" chip.

Double points for clean sheets for all 5 defenders and both keepers for one gameweek only.

My original draft squad for Allsvenskan fantasy included Joakim Persson who now appears to be flagged. Tried Google translating the reason into English but the answer doesn't seem to make any sense. Please can anyone help?

Hi Charlie, from what I can ascertain is that Persson (I have him too) is aiming to be available for GW 1. I'll be holding him unless I hear that he's out for GW 1, even then I might still hold if he is fit for GW 2 as I have an okay bench.

Hope that helps mate and good luck.

Welcome mate, keep an eye on this website for injury updates - https://www.sportsgambler.com/injuries/football/sweden-allsvenskan/

There's nothing/no-one been added as yet but hopefully in the 24 hours before the first match there will be more information. I use this site for FPL, Bundesliga and Eliteserien fantasy games and find it to be pretty accurate and helpful. Given the lack of English language sites for updated Allsvenskan information I think this is probably one of the most useful.

For the Eliteserien game the website is - https://www.sportsgambler.com/injuries/football/norway-eliteserien/

    Great article, thank you.

Eliteserien is a a fun game, price rises are random and you need to go early to get them, clean sheets are random, injuries are not always evident, rotation can happen any time and you rarely know that it is coming. Plus with the snow fixtures can be randomly postponed.

If you nail your chips you will have a good season, otherwise it's hard to claw things back.

    Good luck everyone

Way less experience than you but my recollection of how it played out does match this.

Would just add that there is a joy in playing a game where participation is comparatively low and - Metaculus aside 😉 - content creators are invisible and it is you and your wits against the world.

Wasn't around but I'm guessing this is similar to how FPL played way back when.

Cheers. Is it mainly in Nov/Dec and particularly Tromsø and Bodø that we see snow cancellations? Pretty much all thawed out in Oslo now, although I do recall a hike to a cabin just outside the city in (I think) April a couple of years ago where I almost got stuck wading through waist deep snow & had to beat a not-so-hasty and kind of scary retreat

Cool! Anything in particular you'd like to see more of? I could try to write some weekly round ups once we get going and maybe pull CS odds?

Or more indepth team previews? The latter are a bit harder to write since I'm mainly working from stats & a couple of friendlies but we could try make a more collaborative effort on predicted lineups or something like that?

This is more of a question to those that have played the game before, but probably a preview (with GS and CS odds and a 6ish fixture ticker) and a review post would bookend the gameweeks nicely 🙂

    Excellent write-up!
I tried to learn Danish a few years ago and, browsing the site in Norwegian, it's virtually identical. Could be a fun reading exercise to try and work out what the story is with players and teams I have no clue about.
No CCs, low player count, no expectations to do well, yet leagues and informed articles like this that point out traps like early DGWs... I think you can count me in 🙂

(If Knight is team Odd, then I am team HamKam).

I get the closer odds for Tromso v Brann - but Tromso have had a diabolical pre-season.
They brought a bit of excitement last year - here’s hoping they do the same this season - but with a blank in GW2 and their high scoring attacking defenders from last season long gone - I wouldn’t rush in until we see a bit more of them.

Another effort at trying to winkle out some info.

Last time I played this Eikrem was a thing. I see he currently has a smell but equally he scored twice against Legia Warsaw. Have my eye on him as a potential for DGW3 with a placeholder till then.

Nostalgia pick? Looks to have done impressively last time out on PPM - just not that many Ms!

Sounds obvious but, chip strategy up to dgw10 influences gw1 selection/formation....

    Dgw10 might suit rich uncle....precludes Attack/2 captains

That leaves Dgw 3 which might suit all out attack

But, with all out attack you'd want 3 good forwards, Kierkevold not great....maybe L Olsen...budget problem if you want Glimt mid

    Just some outline thoughts

Definitely considering Rich Uncle for 10, especially if I cant work in some kind of Bodø double up by then. Guess WC by/around then is also an option - just a bit wary of these unexpected cancellations & stuff so may try to be more cautious with my WC than in FPL

2 captains with Bodo mids would be better though imo, if they could be worked in, might mean dropping a premium forward...or wildcard before

Wow Sarpsborg have really lost a lot of key players, it seems. Was wondering where all the goals came from & just had a look at their top scorers from last season:
    Oppseth, 14 - gone
    Maigaard, 10 - out
    Lunqvist, 7 - laters
    Torp - 7, hello Coventry
Soltvedt - 5, now at Brann

Interesting final round of friendlies (details in the preseason tracker in article) wrapping up with Bodø 3-5 Molde yesterday. Such a tough choice between the 5 premiums - Finne, Gulbrandsen, Hauge, Grønbæk, Tripic. Can get 3 if I compromise on one of the premium defenders (Soltvedt / Molde WBs) but Soltvedt also scored again. Good for the game anyway to have such competition, especially compared to the current premium situation in FPL

Agreed Mentaculus, I'm going with Finne, Gulbrandsen and Tripic plus have squeezed in Soltvedt with compromises elsewhere. I really want Salvesen of Viking but that will have to wait until GW 4. Also starting with no B/G largely because of GW 3. Many of us may well have similar teams to start with because of the double. Finne hasn't been overly impressive in pre-season and I'm starting to think Odd players are a trap for the double but they are relatively cheap.

I'm leaning heavily into preseason form also since I've been able to watch quite a few of the friendlies. So currently on Gulbrandsen, Tripic & Hauge (but only just switched Grønbæk to Hauge & not 100% on that yet).

Yeah I wonder if Odd might be hit & miss but I'm probably sticking with Tewelde for now.

Wow! I haven't found enough c.5m enablers to be confident in the 4 premium structure but I keep trying

Not sure if mine are valid enablers tbh. Just crossing my fingers that the big hitters offer enough to offset the limited options in the squad!

There was one I was especially confused by - August Karlin has the 2nd highest odds from LSK at 21% but he looks like a defensive mid. New signing from Sweden but only 2 G in 20 games last season

Missed a lot of preseason, presumably with injury, but just returned in the last 2 friendlies. Unfortunately haven't got much of a look at him yet but he was very much on my radar stats-wise (plus a little home team bias for KFUM)

Can highly recommend this to any thinking of entering. Like FPL in the good old days. My 7th year, finished 60th in 2020 with very little knowledge of the league, know more now and look forward to it every year.

Anyone who knows the league got a view on the following

Ruud or Baccay def for the Odd double

Hansen a good keeper pick ?

Would you go Gronbaek or Tripic if you can only afford one of them ?

Is Eriksen nailed to start for Molde ?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Think Molde have too many options to use "nailed".

No expert on their options and formations but both Eikrem and Berisha lurk. Neither featured much if at all preseason but they have good records and were top options last time I played this.

Currently on Eriksen here but making sure I have bench cover - not least because I'm thinking of Stenevik over Linnes too to accommodate all my premium types.

May well need to fix my team structure.

Doesn't look to me like Eriksen is nailed, but on the plus side, one of his key positional rivals (Breivik) has been out since November with a broken tibia and only played 8mins in preseason so it may take a few more weeks before he's properly match fit

That will do it’s more wanting Eriksen to play twice in the double

    Sandberg
    Soltvedt/Linnes/Dahl Reitan
    Owusu/Tripic/Jorgensen/Gronbaek
    Kirkevold/Nunez/Finne

    Saethwe/Sery Larsen/Kaasa/Ruud

Looks OK , see that you've had to sacrifice the attack slot to get the 2 big mids in , I'm looking at doing this after gwk3 after using the attack attack chip and also your playing mid Owusu think most will have him as first sub cover would rather play a brann mid . But I'm no expert at this league just my opinion.
      Good luck

I was watching the Bodø v Molde friendly & got a little taste of blizzard-football:
      https://ibb.co/Q6J0kcn

Went off for a while then came back to finish the game. Forecast looks okay for Bodø & Tromsø at the moment but still not entirely through the snow season & into spring

Glimt are away so less of an issue in the first week. Tromsø is important cos they host Brann. As you say, forecast is improving so looks like we'll be ok.

Still searching for team news sources but found this reported on a Molde forum:

"Vi begynner å bli flere og flere. Nå er nesten alle i trening igjen. Litt mengdestyring på noen. (Kristoffer) Haugen og (Martin) Bjørnbak tar vi stille og rolig. Martin (Bjørnbak) har ikke spilt på lenge. (Kristoffer) Haugen håper vi er på beina rimelig kjapt"

    (Run through google translate:)
"We are becoming more and more numerous. Now almost everyone is in training again. A bit of quantity control on some. We take (Kristoffer) Haugen and (Martin) Bjørnbak quietly. Martin (Bjørnbak) has not played for a long time. (Kristoffer) Haugen hopes we'll be on our feet reasonably quickly"

"Stille" (quietly) I guess means carefully here?

I think I've more or less finalised my team now. With the Haugen news, I'm going to take a risky punt on Stenevik even though he may well become a problem in a few weeks. Would look to switch to Løvik when fit. I've been very tempted to leave out Soltvedt for funds but he's making that very difficult. I like both the Strømsgodset WBs at 5m & think I'll go with Tomasson over Vilsvik, and rotate him with LSK CB Gabrielson. Had Dahl Reitan in early drafts but RBK's fixtures turn pretty soon so that may contribute toward an early WC.

Made a knee-jerk switch from Grønbæk to Hauge after last friendly. Not sure about that but B/G attack does look pretty exciting.

I love how direct & aggressive Viking look and am in for an expensive attacking double up of Tripic & Salvesen. Perhaps the fixtures aren't ideal initially but the wild recent history of Bodø v Viking (5-1, 2-3, 2-0, 4-5, 3-5) might suggest that's actually a fixture to target. Both sides have a pretty intense high press & I think it'll be spectacularly end-to-end.

I'm not 100% on playing a chip GW3 so I'm hedging my bets for now by attacking the first 2 GWs for B/G & VIK, but leaving a 2 FT route (from Hauge & Salvesen) to Finne & Eriksen (or Horne Myhre if fit) if I want to use Attack! Attack! GW3. Starting with Gulbrandsen over Finne on preseason form. Golden boy Nypan & Odd doubler Tewelde round off the mids, with a differential punt on Maï Traore as 3rd forward. I like what I've seen of the Fredrikstad forwards (Bjartalid at 7.5m also a good option) and fancy them to do well for a promoted side.

    Selvik
    Soltvedt Stenevik Gabrielsen
    Hauge Tripic (K) Nypan Tewelde
    Gulbrandsen Salvesen Traore
    (Øy, Owusu, Tomasson, Bjarnason)

Playing Eliteserien is different than playing FPL. One of the main differences is, with FPL you kinda know, when you will use your chips. With ES, my rule is, use your chips as soon as possible. Because double GWs is random. So I will for sure use chip on GW3.
You never really know, if there will be more doubles. And this double is kinda perfect, Molde, Brann, Odd, what do you want more…

Thanks for the warning. I'm still a bit split between 2 lines of advice I've received from more experienced Eliteserien - one advocating Attack! Attack! DGW3 then shift funds to midfield. But the other warning about the chaotic schedule & snow cancellations would suggest there are plenty more DGWs to come...?

Tbh I think I might feel more confident in an improvised, later use of chips once I've watched a lot more games since I'm in a distinctive position of being new to the league but have also bought some tickets to live games & will watch a lot on TV so my knowledge should improve rapidly.

I also thought that with blanks spread out across 16, 17, 18, 19 I'll probably need a full playing squad, or at least a strong front 8 by that point so that should help with improvised chip use if I have a forward structure of e.g 11 / 8.5 / 6.5 rather than a 4.5 fodder sub. But then a combination of blanks and doubles could potentially make it tricky... Anyway, I'll keep my options for GW3 for now

          Hi
Should I be worried about the forecast for the Brann game at Tromso on Monday? Looks very cold. Although I speak as a UK resident where we consider 4C to be freezing!
Does Tromso have undersold heating on their pitch or is that a daft question?

Artificial pitch with undersoil heating. There's a list on wikipedia's Eliteserien page:

            https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Eliteserien

            https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romssa_Arena

Tiny bit of snow forecast for today but as long it's clear on Monday I guess it should be fine. -2C is balmy for North Norway! 🙂

(Further google translated news, from diskutopia citing NRK as source)

    Børven injured before series opener:
Odd striker Torgeir Børven hit his groin in training on Maundy Thursday and will probably miss the start of the Eliteserien at home against Haugesund, reports Varden. Børven was not to be seen at Odd's training ground on Friday. The match against Haugesund is played on Easter Sunday, and the striker still has a slight swelling in his groin, writes Varden. - Torgeir is not good enough to train today. But it is too early to say how long this will take. We take it day by day. Torgeir left yesterday not to take any chances, says trainer Kenneth Dokken to the newspaper.
