Team Of The Season – Tom Heaton

Following a 150-point campaign in 2014/15 with Burnley, Tom Heaton was quickly installed on many pre-season watchlists. The early adopters were to be proved correct as the Claret’s keeper excelled to deliver another outstanding top-flight season.

Heaton proved to be the perfect “fire and forget” option for our 15-man squads, providing consistent returns right until the final weeks of the season.

Such was Heaton’s dominance as the stand-out option, he gained selection in our Team of the Season with a massive 77% of the vote.

The Statistics

With a starting price of just 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and based on his 2014/15 output, it was something of a surprise to see Heaton only owned by 144,402 managers back in Gameweek 1.

The England international first displayed his potential as a budget option with a 10-point haul in the 2-0 victory over Liverpool in Gameweek 2, when he picked up his first maximum bonus point haul.

That ability to dominate the bonus points whenever Sean Dyche’s side kept a clean sheet would prove pivotal to Heaton’s appeal throughout the season.

He only delivered one more clean sheet prior to Gameweek 10, when he registered his second double-digit score of the season in the goalless draw against his former side Manchester United.

The Burnley keeper made 11 saves at Old Trafford – already the second time in the season he’d reached that figure in a single match – and scooped maximum bonus points once again.

A calf injury then forced him to miss two matches before he embarked on his most productive run.

Between Gameweeks 16 and 23, Heaton averaged 6.1 points per match (ppm) in a spell which included three clean sheets, eight save points, a penalty stop and 11 bonus points.

It was during this period that his price in FPL hit the 5.0 mark, with more than 800,000 managers owning the Burnley captain by Gameweek 24.

Heaton maintained his form with a further three shut-outs between Gameweeks 29 and 32 and finished the campaign with 10 clean sheets from 35 starts, with six of those coming at Turf Moor.

His price and ownership peaked in Gameweek 33, at 5.2 and 900,000 respectively, although Dyche’s men did fail to record a clean sheet in five of their last six encounters.

Heaton ended the season as the top scoring goalkeeper in FPL with 149 points – one shy of his 2014/15 tally.

He averaged 4.3 ppm, significantly better than any Burnley defender, with Michael Keane the next best with 3.2 ppm.

His total of 21 bonus points set a new record for an FPL keeper in a season, surpassing Vito Mannone’s 16 points gained with Sunderland in 2013/14.

Heaton also ranked top for saves (142) and was the number one player for value (29.2) in terms of points per million across all four positions.

The Prospects

Due to his impressive production in 2016/17, a price hike for Heaton seems almost inevitable, although if he remains under the 5.5 mark, he will doubtless prove a popular option once again.

Given that Dyche’s men eventually finished 16th in the Premier League, a price point of 5.0 would appear likely.

Heaton has shown over two seasons that he can be relied upon for around 10 clean sheets, as well as save and bonus points, so that price should still represent solid value.

Something to monitor will be the future of centre-back Keane, who is expected to leave the club in the summer.

Keane’s outstanding performances at the heart of the Clarets defence brought him his England debut in March, and he would need to be adequately replaced in order for the Burnley rearguard to remain as resilient next season.

Heaton’s ability to keep clean sheets in less difficult home matches is the primary reason for his appeal as a Fantasy asset.

But as he demonstrated with his two double-figure hauls on the road, he also has the ability to produce in any match via save points.

While 4.5 options are always popular when budgets are tight at the start of a season, Heaton’s output over the last nine months suggests that we can’t overlook him when we begin to formulate our 15-man squads in July.

Jordan Pickford’s destination and price could influence matters, but Heaton could well remain the obvious one-stop shop option again, paired with a £4.0m asset – perhaps even Burnley’s second keeper – in a £9.0m configuration.

Who's starting next season with 3 x Spurs (Kane, Alli & Eriksen)?

    What about defenders?

And with 3 x Spuds, getting another who's showing best form (Son, Rose, Trippier, Toby, Vert etc) will suddenly require two transfers.

And if either of Alli or Eriksen (who will almost certainly be the same price) do better than the other in GW1 then one's price will rise the other drop by GW2

So think I'll start with all three (Kane, Alli & Eriksen) and then GW2 drop the one who's getting sold and buy another preforming mid. Make sense?

Not sure mate. Spurs have started off slowly last 2 seasons and don't pick up until later on. This accounts for their poor showing in the CL too. Media say it is because Poch makes them run so much in pre-season so they can press.

A wonderful player - very Silva like. It does not bode well for Sterling.

A very funny mistake on the FB page for MOTD - from a United fan: 'And haters said we wouldn't be able to sign world class players this summer. We are still the biggest club in the world, suck it up'

The headline said Silva was coming to Manchester, and he evidently thought it was to United not City 😀

Zabaleta was top among Man City defenders for tackles and chances per minute http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/18530/

This offers a bit more context re other defenders.....more chances per minute than Daniels or Alonso.

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4494/

I think if priced at 5.0 Zabaleta could be a good value option next season.

They need to pick up a few more clean sheets at home - I think that will happen given they've taken a while to adjust to their new stadium.

Zabaleta is good with some of the bonus' key metrics - if fit could be good next season as we look for value.

Yep. I think I'm going to pay alot more attention to looking for value players early on. I missed out on Walker for example this season. Can only see the number of high performing premium players rising further next season so we will need good cheap players more than ever.

Iheanacho has proved himself when given the chance. He'd be a fantastic player....FPL needs more good 6-8m strikers this season - woefully short last season.

I've heard Ederson, Donnarumma, and Valdes (yes, the MID keeper) as the main options.

Donnarumma has been cited a lot recently but to my understanding City agreed a "gentleman's agreement" with Ederson and Benfica earlier this year, and Ederson liked some of City's pictures on Instagram around that time...

    Your favourite player of 2016/17

When asked for my weekly Radio Yorkshire FPL slot about who my favourite player is - I replied Romelu Lukaku.

    https://audioboom.com/posts/5959260-fantasy-football-scout-fpl-season-review-2016-17

My reasons were that he was among the most reliable players and most reliable captains. Too often the likes of Hazard, Sanchez,Ibrahimivoc and Kane let us down when we handed them the armband (Kane's Hull and Burnley home scores were particularly galling). In contrast Lukaku more often than not delivered at home against easier opposition, and failed to haul away. He was the anti-troll.

After doing some research for a forthcoming analysis of the new career hall of fame top ten it looks like these elite managers should also agree. Across the board the Everton man was their most successful regular captain.

Anyway that's my favourite player of FPL - who is yours?

I did a double-take when you said that Jonty if I'm honest - I was mouthing a name in the office, someone that I didn't have all year.

      Josh King.

I'm guessing the counterarguments are that he didn't do it for the whole year; but as value goes for those around his total points for the year you are looking at an extra million at least.

I also mention Josh King in that interview....he, Heaton and Charlie Daniels were my favourite value players.

Lukaku though had the edge as he was a captaincy candidate that delivered when expected...whereas few, perhaps wrongly, considered King forthe armband regularly.

You'll get no arguments from me though re the greatness of Josh King. 🙂

You're right, and there is a difference that I didn't recognise at first - between 'favourite' players and 'favourite value' players. I loved King and Heaton over the course of the season (didn't share your Charlie Daniels love to my detriment!) which I suppose is why I was so surprised.

I didn't love anyone consistently from the top tier though all year - was disappointed at various points by Aguero, Hazard, Sanchez and Kane.

"Too often the likes of Hazard, Sanchez,Ibrahimivoc and Kane let us down when we handed them the armband". Nope, Sanchez never let me down - captained 13 times, only blanked once, and even that was a 3-pointer. He was very predictable before Arsenal fell apart - captain him away vs. easier opposition and he'll haul.

So, Alexis gets my vote. Josh King runner-up.

Must have been a different Sanchez that let me down over Autumn with his one double digit haul between GWK 7 and 12.

And a different Sanchez to the one that got 3 points away to Burnley over that period, 5 at home to Swansea and three at home to Middlesbrough (the worst side ever 😉 ).

Also a different Sanchez to the one that only had one double digit haul between GWK 15 and 24. 😉

Also worth noting that all of the top ten in the new hall of fame captained him the most. In all cases Lukaku was the one that got them a higher score on average.

I mean, it's certainly all about timing - I had Hazard for 16 GWs for example and his ppg was about 3.5!

Sanchez's ppg as captain for me was 22.9 - includes triple captaining, but it's still a very high number.

        3. Pierce34

I only captained him once between GWs 7 and 12, and that was during his double digit haul 😉

I've made some pretty good/lucky captain calls this season.

Trippier is great too, but Walker had a great season and was solid at the Euros too. And that pace is a vital option for us, we haven't had a fast RB in ages.

Good point. Although I think maybe Pep needs to focus less on attackers, as they can easily score any match with his frontline

Wouldn't be surprised if this is his only attacking signing

Pffft. Bernardo Silva may be a good player but he doesn't help us one jot...in fact he makes things worse.

A manager who may or may not play with wingers
A manager who may or may not play with two up front
A manager who may well play mids as full backs
A manager with about 40 mids to choose from.

Gonna a be ridiculous rotation unless they flog a few.

I think it's a good signing because it seems we're trying to have two decent options for each position now.

He's a very good signing...top drawer. Just makes City FPL picks even more complicated sadly.

I'm only looking at KDB, Sane, and Kompany now. Especially KDB and Kompany.

KDB was prone to the odd surprise bench even this season.

De Bruyne is the one to own imo. All of them will be rotated at times but KDB seems the most secure and has set pieces.

Because if you don't have any fit centre-backs, the logical choice is to play your backup keeper... how strange! Bust-up?

Aguero staying makes things quite complicated. I'd be more than happy to own Jesus with Iheanacho & Enes Ünal as back up.

Very little experience in that position without him I guess

I would too, in a few years. For now we need experience. Aguero looks miles more composed and experienced than Jesus.

Aguero has really turned it around and I for one didn't expect it to happen.

I've never seen him play as well as he did in recent games. Hopefully a good omen of what's to come.
