Fantasy Football Scout Cup – Third Round Draw

Following an exceptionally high scoring second round there are now no former winners left in our open-to-all Fantasy Premier League Cup competition.

All four ex-champions to survive the first round departed at the second stage, which took place during Gameweek 31’s limited set of fixtures.

Reigning champion TH14 was seen off 85-82 by Ilovebaps , A Manager Has No Name was beaten 107-100 by horlicks esq, MCH succumbed to The dinkum donuts 82-78 and Wild Rover failed to overcome Gloria Kanchelskis in their 86-81 clash.

Despite just four matches taking place in Gameweek 31, there were 41 managers who returned a minimum of 100 points.

The second round’s highest scoring was dmcqt. He notched 128 points, rockets from 28,412nd to 7,475th in the overall rankings and earns a round three encounter with 232,058-placed The Brown Casanova.

Despite dipping ten places overall to 48th, thisisdiz remains the highest ranked manager. Norman conquest (rank 69,117) is the unfortunate manager to draw this high-flyer in the third round.

Another notable round three match up is 7,845-ranked hwhite94’s tie with the competition’s second-highest placed manager, Always Captain Kun, who is in 63rd spot.

Elsewhere, 43,939-ranked 2 Girls 1 Shlup’s giant killing skills will be put to test once again, when he meets 1,561st ranked Dharmabum. He made it through to the third round by defeating FFScout’s 3,941-placed tech guru matzi11a in the second round and after seeing off former champion Gooner Dave in round one.

The full second round results can be found here, while the third round draw can be found here.

So if there are 4 DGW fixtures in 34 & 6 DGW fixtures in 37 does that change your chip strategy?

Specially those with BB, TC & FH.

But Kane is probably the best TC option in 37 better than most in 34 and if wildcarding in 32/33 how do we get 15 DGW starters for GW37?

Interesting but I think I’d still prefer Kane in 37 maybe giving his last try for the golden boot as I think it’ll be near impossible getting 15 players who start twice in 37.

Leaning towards something like that too. Hopefully Kane can take Salah to the last gameweek for the golden boot and gives us a TC option.

He’s also chasing some records but I think he can get those before GW38.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who are the best defenders for the season run in?

Is it best to go cheap at the back and spend money elsewhere in attack? Or does this limit the power of the bench boost for those still with that chip to play?

What cheap budget options are the best?

Which premium defenders are worth getting? For example is Alonso simply too expensive? And can the Arsenal backline escape rotation?

Are any Man Utd defenders worth getting? Or is it DDG or bust?

    1. Karan14
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 2 months ago

I think it really depends on how the fixtures fall. If Burnley & Swansea have dgws in 34 then there defence looks worth investing.

There are some options like Christensen, Mustafi & Smalling in the 5.0-5.5 but can we be sure they are nailed?

Personally I’m only settled on Morgan right now for my wildcard backline.

There’s not a large number of must-have expensive defenders (above £5.5m). I think Monreal will escape rotation. Alonso isn’t performing for his price, but I have The Fear or removing him that when I do it’ll be the week he next explodes.

This is the one area of my wildcard squad whichI haven't really formed much of an opinion on yet, as it will be guided quite strongly by the DGW announcement.

Alonso is still the standout I think, but if you can't afford him I'm not sure I would invest in any other Chelsea defenders, they have been quite leaky for some time now. Manchester United defenders I think offer the best chance of clean sheets, but there are rotation concerns there as they have 5 centre backs for 2 positions. My opinion is that Bailly is the best of them, so I would hope he would play most games, but its Mourinho's opinion on him that matters. can any Utd fans shed any light on Bailly and where he lies in the pecking order?

Spurs are a strong defensive team, my pick here would be Davies as I think Rose has talked his way out the club. However the fixtures aren't great. Maybe he would be a better investment for the second DGW? Arsenal I think are a minefield for rotation, I won't be going there unless a pattern emerges - i.e. Maitland Niles plays all the league games for example.

I'm half thinking of holding onto Robertson as I think he is in the top 3 left backs in the league now and offers an attacking threat. I think he plays most games and for his price I think he is good value. Liverpool up to 13 clean sheets this season now too, not far off the top defences.

      1. The Rumour Mill
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

The budget defenders really will come down to the fixture announcement. But at a glance, Swansea look a good bet, especially if their double falls into 34. Burnley we know are strong defensively, Lowton probably looks best value as he has picked up an assist or 2 aswell in the last few weeks. A lot of people have been looking at Leicester, but I haven't been too impressed with their defence - Maguire is a bit expensive and Chilwell has Fuchs as competition. Maybe Simpson with Amartey out?

I actually think 2 great options are teams without double gameweeks - Watford and Palace. Watford have 4 excellent home games in their remaining fixtures, 3 of them in the next 4 games. Mariappa at 4.2 has started every game recently, could be a good enabler in our squads.

Palace have Bournemouth (A) Brighton (H) Watford (A) Leicester (H) Stoke (A) West Brom (H) after the liverpool game. They have defenders returning from injury and the motivation to avoid the drop. van aanholt at 5.1 is a cheap attacking wingback, and Sakho at 4.6 I think is underpriced and offers strong BPS potential.

I think these 2 are worth a look especially for those without a free hit. For those with a free hit remaining, They might actually make blank GW35 navigatable without needing to use it, and defer the free hit for DGW37 where it may be more effectively deployed. This will depend entirely on where the rearranged fixtures are placed though.

Don't be discouraged though, he's a minimal risk, let's call it that. And Jones would need time to gain form and reestablish his place anyway.

Mourinho is unpredictable, but my gut feeling is Smalling is his CB of choice at the moment.

I think you have to look at these mistakes through Jose's perspective.

Bailly was in 'adventurous' mood that game - in first half he dribbled past Salah. And then came the own goal. It all felt a bit reckless.

Mistakes cost goals, and goals cost games.

If all three are in perfect form it's not easy to choose 2 - and we're still talking about naildness here.

As an intermittent Davies owner I can pretty much guarantee he will not play twice in a week during the doubles. the fullbacks put in such a shift that Poch rotates them alot.

I'd love to have kept Davies but need nailed on for a precious prem def spot and he's not that man.

I've gone for the Man Utd Triple up for the DGW in the form of DDG, Bailly and Smalling/Jones

My WC will keep VVD and then swap Smalling/Jones ahead of DGW 34 depending on which one appears to be playing. The thought process is to exploit those that only put DDG in and really maximise outpout on MUN clean sheets and also cover any Lukaku points.

This way you can use Lukaku's money to afford players like Alonso and a good 5th midfielder

      Best budget options:

Van Der Hoorn, Lowton, Chilwell, Simpson, Morgan, Naughton, Tarkowski, Dummett

Sounds simple I think you have to base it on

      A) minutes - Otamendi/Monreal/Robertson for example - All still playing i Europe, Ota could be a huge risk if they win the league in next 2 GW's.
      B) CS - Swansea popular, with 9 CS and DGW potential
      C) attacking return - Alonso... but that price tag

Don’t like double United and think people will swerve Christensen due to previous bad luck. He’s still nailed I think. Worth the punt.

I think you have to prioritise the midfield as they are bringing in the most points but if you can afford a premium defence afterwards then I do see points in in.

Premium defenders to target: Alonso, Bailly, Monreal

All depends on how fixtures falls.

Ask again when we know more.

I'd be tempted to get a couple SGW players. So I can use FH in GW37.
TC might be a cleaver use in BGW35

      Again. All depends on fixtures

But we don't yet know which DGW ARS, BUR, BOU, HUD, MCI, NEW, SWA & WHU will have their doubles in.
This is important for Bench Boost planning.

The mixture of the doubles in each game week is very very important (Man City double in 34 v 37 for example) and we simply don’t know what that is yet

      Working down the list:

City are a no go for me - not great fixtures and potential rotation kicking in
United - De Gea, unless you look for Valencia then the rest are rotation
Liverpool - no Double, Robertson if you can squeeze the funds
Spurs - is like the full backs but they will be rotated. Think revisiting 36 onwards is best
Chelsea - Alonso yes, after that it’s a bit iffy

Arsenal - I actually think that Mustafi is safe. We all know Kosc is the injury prone one, so he will be protected, I can’t see Wenger resting both Kosc AND Mustafi in the league (to save face). Good fixtures and if it doesn’t work out, then at least the home form kicks in.

Leicester - Difficult to pinpoint, its price vs playing time
Burnley - Lowton for the budget
Swansea - if you have Fab is doubling or tripling too much?
Southampton - like last year the Double Double looks on but so out of form.

Currently on alonso, Mustafi, Chilwell, Lowton and one other spot for under 4.8

King is for GW34 use only. Happy with his form to be my cheap fodder.

Smalling is concerning, but has 2DGW. I’d rather Jones if declared fit soon.

          VDH is not rotation risk.

I have 0.4 so can upgrade Smalling to Rüdiger.

            Salah-Mahrez-Myki-D Silva-Kennedy
            Auba-Barnes-Firm.

            0.8 could mean.
Ryan-kennedy-Firm become Fab-Ki-VArdy with .3 to get Son for Silva next week.

Yeah. I'd be tempted to make the changes.

              My team is:

              DDG. Fab.
              Alonso. Smalling. Lowton. Mustafi. VDH
              Salah. Mahrez. Son. Willian. Kennedy.
              Firmino. Auba. Vardy.

                  That front 3 is decent.
I need to get Willian and son. i'm going to give Myhki a few games

Probably best to just wait for the fixture release

no idea why I was thinking just this but didn't have the energy to post about it lol

He's 100% coming in for me on my WC - he is definitely nailed lol unlike Chilwell who can be rotated with Fuchs

Simpson was never dropped Amartey came in for him when injured but Amartey is now injured and he was only ever emergency cover for Simpson anyway.

AND, Simpson looked very threatening vs Chelsea

i think Amartey might regain his spot when back from injury, i m going morgan. hope simpson pays off for you though

It wasn't like there were plenty of clean sheets about when Amartey was playing though, don't see why he would keep his spot over Simpson.

    Current WC squad

    DDG. Fab.
    Alonso. Smalling. Lowton. Mustafi. VDH
    Salah. Mahrez. Son. Willian. Kennedy.
    Firmino. Auba. Vardy.

I like it, but downgrading alonso would give me funds to boost elsewhere.

    What do you think?

    A. Stick
    B. Do it!!!! (do what though...)

    Thanks!

        Fab / Ryan
        Bailly / Chris / Dummett / Lowton / Morgan
        Sala / Mahrez / Son / Hazard / king
        Lukaku / Auba / Murray

then for gw34 : murray and dummet become ayew and southampton defender 🙂

Quite reliant on Ryan clean sheets. Don't fancy planning to transfer Dummett & Murray, in case other things happen.

Ayew will be back and firing for the DGW in 34.
Mariappa has two good fixtures before 34 and could trade him out after.
