Felipe Anderson answers Fantasy sellers with a brace and 15-point haul

The final match of Gameweek 19 marked the halfway point of not just the festive period for Premier League sides but also the 2018/19 season as a whole.

Felipe Anderson registered his fifth double-digit haul of the campaign – that’s more than Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling have managed – as West Ham United secured their third successive away win and moved up to ninth in the table.

We round up the key Fantasy talking points, manager quotes and injury news from last night’s encounter at St. Mary’s.

Southampton 1-2 West Ham United

  • Goals: Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) | Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) x2
  • Assists: None | Michail Antonio (£6.8m)

At half-time of the Thursday night encounter on the south coast, those Fantasy managers who ditched Felipe Anderson (£7.3m) ahead of Gameweek 19 – and there were many, 166,386 in all – would have been quietly satisfied, such was the Brazilian’s unremarkable first-half display and relative lack of goal threat.

One solitary shot off target was the sum total of Anderson’s endeavours in a goalless opening 45 minutes, as the two sides on show traded half-chances while demonstrating a lack of cutting edge at the business end of the pitch.

By the hour mark, we had seen three goals, with Anderson the scorer of two of them.

Both were superb strikes, the pick of which was the goal that brought West Ham level at 1-1: collecting the ball after a headed clearance, Anderson caught Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) out at his near post with a rasping shot from a difficult angle just outside the Southampton box.

Anderson then converted a Michail Antonio (£6.8m) through-ball after a swift counter-attack and had two more chances to complete his hat-trick on the break late in the game, being denied by McCarthy on both occasions.

It was a scintillating second-half display from the Brazilian on the left flank and while a fair number of his sellers won’t have been punished this week – the “upgrade” to Paul Pogba (£8.0m) was a popular move ahead of Gameweek 19 – this was a timely reminder that Anderson remains an excellent mid-price midfield option, particularly with a porous Burnley defence to face next and Brighton then visiting east London before FA Cup third round weekend.

No player has scored more Premier League goals than Anderson (seven) since the start of November.

Manuel Pellegrini said of his star midfielder:

I always say that Felipe is just knowing what is the Premier League, in every game he is improving, it is not easy for a midfielder to score seven goals in the middle of the season, I am sure that he will continue improving in the second half.

I don’t know that [he is the best player outside of the top six], I think for me it is more important that the team plays well and that Felipe is playing well in that, in that you always need high individual performers to win. Tonight he played very well but he is not the only one.

Anderson and West Ham’s performance was all-the-more commendable given their injury crisis, with ten senior players – including Javier Hernandez (£6.4m) and the ill Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m) – unavailable for this encounter.

Pellegrini indeed could only name six substitutes on the bench for this match, but the lack of competition, at least for now, means security of starts for the likes of Anderson and Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m).

Snodgrass curled a first-half effort just wide of McCarthy’s post but perhaps unsurprisingly didn’t pose the same menace that his more expensive midfield colleague did going forward.

Lucas Perez (£6.2m) wasted an excellent chance midway through the first half on a rare start up front, but the 30-year-old striker didn’t suggest he’d be any long-term threat to Hernandez or Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) upon their recoveries from injury.

The predominantly left-footed Grady Diangana (£4.5m) struggled on the right flank, while Antonio – as good as he was going forward – really struggled with the defensive side of his game at right-back.

Owners of Lukasz Fabianski (£4.7m) would certainly have been concerned about how much space Southampton were getting down the West Ham right in the first half, so the hope for their sakes is that Zabaleta recovers from illness in time for the trip to Turf Moor.

Speaking of the Polish custodian, he was in fantastic form again on Thursday.

The former Arsenal shot-stopper produced a superb save to deny Mario Lemina (£4.8m) in the second half (that stop being somewhat spoiled by an offside flag) and was also blameless for Southampton’s only goal, having made two blocks from Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) and Oriel Romeu (£4.3m) before Redmond controversially bundled the ball into the net via his hand.

Redmond and Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m) were bright early on in the supporting roles either side of Danny Ings (£5.6m), though that the Saints didn’t test Fabianski once after Anderson’s second strike said much about their lack of killer instinct in front of goal.

Ings, the most-bought budget FPL asset of each of the last two Gameweeks, only had one early shot into the side-netting to show for his efforts before being hooked just after the hour-mark.

Southampton looked susceptible to pace and movement at the back, meanwhile, and this was their ninth straight match without a clean sheet – hope for owners of Manchester City assets ahead of the Citizens’ trip to the south coast on Sunday.

A frustrated Ralph Hasenhuttl said:

If we had the ball the decision was a little bit slower. It’s always about turning forward and playing forward but we played a lot to the side and behind.

We saw a lot of old behaviours today and that’s not what I want to see in my game.

It’s not like one or the other you turn completely off but if you get a bit tired in your mind you fall back in these old manners.

It was intense the last games. We came out of a position where we changed a lot, it was an intense time and I was expecting there would come the time where you feel the fresh is gone and the speed slows down.

Today we made not so much deep runs, we made a lot of times the decision to play back and that was a great difference to the games before against a team which is so physically strong like West Ham where you don’t have time to play back.

If you want to create chances like we did a few times you play quick in the deep and have deep runs and create chances. When we turn back and wait until they are in their shape and they are balanced it is very difficult to score and to create chances.

Southampton XI (3-4-3): McCarthy; Bednarek, Yoshida (Austin 80′), Vestergaard; Valery, Lemina (Elyounoussi 87′), Romeu, Targett; Redmond, Armstrong, Ings (Long 62′).

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski, Antonio, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Obiang, Rice, Diangana (Carroll 55′), Snodgrass (Masuaku 90′), Felipe Anderson, Pérez (Noble 78′).

I know its all guessig, Pep roulette and all that. But who do you think will start for City of Sterling, Sane, Mahrez. Aguero, Jesus etc?

      Pure opinion.
      Mahrez to start.
      Kun to start.
      Sterling to start.
      Sane to the bench.
      Jesus to the bench.

When Sane is being pocketed by the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Ricardo Pereira, you start to wonder wtf is wrong with him.

I reckon one of Sterling and Sané start at a minimum, possibly both as City won't find their feet (with a smashing) without their best 11. Reckon both will get enough minutes to haul even if one is benched. Mahrez will most likely start. Completely unsure on forwards.

Think Mahrez will get a game and Sterling will be rested for LFC. Aguero will 100 percent start. Wouldn't be surprised if De Bruyne and David Silva both start.

Sterling usually doesnt do well against Liverpool tho. Ive just sold Sterling for Hazard so hopefully I made the right decision there, but he can also get a double figure haul.

    No idea what to do...

    2FT and 0.2 ITB

    Fabianski / hamer
    Robertson / trippier / digne / AWB / Bennet
    Hazard / sterling / sane / Anderson / hoijberg
    Kane / mitrovic / jiminez

Would like rashford or preferably pogba as well as richarlison. Hesitant on removing mitrovic as he has been unlucky in recent weeks. Getting rid of city against Southampton is a scary thought...

I wouldn't change anything, but wouldnt want to waste a transfer. I'd probably do something wasteful like Bennett to Kongolo for fixture appeal.

Gameweek 19 Rough with the Smooth

Quick turnarounds this GW mean we can put the bad behind us.

How did your GW19 go? Did your transfers pay off? Did a hit turn out badly? How did your bench perform?

Feel free to post your tales of joy and woe from Gameweek 19 here:

Rough; Wilson and Fraser > Martial and Ings

Smooth; Played Digne and AWB which is more than most. Green arrow.

Digne first on bench. Thought Wolves having an extra day rest on Fulham would help Doherty, plus AWB’s fixture meant those two played over him.
Also thought EV might shake up the defence after 6-2 against Spurs. Quite cruel!

Rough: brought in hart for 5 goals conceded.
Dropped or from 5 figures to 350k over last 5 gw. Having a general nightmare at the minute

Come 70 mins on Boxing Day’s 3pms I was fearing the worst.

Only transfer I made was to bring in Jiminez for Wilson , I’d been dissuaded from going Shaqiri > Pogba for a -4 by a poster on here.

Auba helped, Hazard captaincy finally paid off and Anderson’s haul was sweet.

88 all out, still lots of ground to make up in the cash league but all of a sudden my team doesn’t seem so bad again despite no Salah or Kane.

My bench was Fanderson, Digne and AWB.

I had to mention it again.

I was very lucky Martial didn’t play but still benched 24 points off defenders and my starting 3 scored 4 points (Kola, Alonso and doherty).

I flirted with bench boost but thought it was “madness”

Had the exact same bench and F.Anderson coming in for Martial!
Really annoyed at playing Doherty ahead of Digne and AWB but it was always going to be a close call... 🙂

Smooth: Got in Pogba (15), Lingard (5) and Kane (6) for Sterling (2), Sané (2) and Wilson (2). 83 (-4) all out even with the benched Digne. Small green arrow up to 11k OR.

Rough: Mark who I was facing in the cup got 86 (-4), Felipe fought hard to make up for Mark’s Hazard captaincy but didn’t make it all the way!

      93 (-4)
8 out of 11 returned points

Smooth - 6 players scored total of 9 goals (Digne, Anderson, Hazard, Richarlison, Aubameyang and Kane) & CS from Robbo and AWB

Only Fab, Shaw and Sane let me down.

Rough - took a pointless -4 hit taking out Alonso/ Masuaku and bring in Shaw (conceded 88mins to HUD) and Martial (illness)
I should have held my FT.
Also Fab conceding a handball goal.

Saving my WC for the last GW so that I could watch more games in order to be sure to get in Digne, Pogba and Hazard... it hurts...

TAA, Digne, AWB, Pogba, Son, Hazard and Salah

Ended up with 110 points and rank went from 40k to 11k! 🙂

      Rough
Captaining my 8th highest scoring player Kane 🙁

net gain was around 6 points I think.

I used my two free transfers. And although Kamara to Ings didn’t pay off, doing that move was the reason I did Alonso to Lovren to raise the cash, so it paid off very well as a combined set of transfers.

A final score of 60pts isn't terrible, but Anderson > Martial couldn't have gone worse. Since I already started AWB I only had Kola's pathetic 1pt coming off the bench for Martial's no show.

Rough: was always gonna get Digne but Spurs game threw me of him and I decided to bank transfer to have 2ft for game week 20. Was gonna captain Salah but changed it to Kane on saturday morning.

Smooth: started Wan Bissaka, Got Lovren before Wolves game, kept Hazard and Anderson and got a return from my captain for a total of 91 pts.

Wildcarded - got 95 points all out, a big green arrow from 35k to just outside the top 10k.

Of those I played/would have played:
Out: Dubravka, Laporte, Pereyra, Kane, Wilson (19 points)
In: Hazard, Digne, Alisson, Ings, Jiminez (42, and captaining Hazard meant it was 57)
Kept: Aubameyang, Anderson, Robertson, Richarlison (plus played Alonso & Sané and left AWB on the bench).

Think that counts as smooth? 🙂 It’s the latest first wildcard I ever played, and with Digne and Captain Hazard coming in I feel I nailed it (for the first week anyway).

Had 2ft's and made an additional 2 for a -8.

Laporte, Alli, Fraser, Lacazette > Digne, Pogba, Hazard, Rashford.

      69 points means a red arrow and a 10k drop to 94k.

Smooth - Son & Lingard in for Sterling & Torriera (for free) went well. Salah & Robertson keep giving consistent returns. Wan-Bissaka continues to do the business and a Richarlison goal off the bench.

Kane as captain neither rough nor smooth really.

Rough - Sané and Ederson continue to disappoint. Sané has one more game to keep his place as midfield competition is fierce. Bennett & Wilson blanks were expected but I will keep both for a while.

Hoping for a green next week after 3 red arrows in a row but it’s very congested in the 50-100k bracket.

Rough: last minute decission to not transfer out alli for pogba and save transfer instead
Smooth: captain eriksen, lovren finally brining some points 77k->43k restoring the rank after awful gw18.

      Rough & Smooth:

Used my 2 FTs to get Trippier and Martial to cover Spurs and Uniteds great fixtures ... Martial got sick and Trippier rotated + Richarlison benched ....

In the end: Richarlison scores + Digne and AWB come on for Trippier and Martial (+25 points)

Smooth - Son, Hazard, Pogba, Anderson.

Rough - All of the above outscored my captain, Kane, after duplication of points!... and worst of all, I started the blankers Sané, Mitro, Doherty ahead of Digne who was first sub on my bench. First time over last 4 GWs that my first sub does not come off the bench.

Overall, with CS of Robbo and AWB, a very good GW with 93 points after 4 or 5 miserable GWs. Back to 103k which is still quite disappointing.

Sold Auba and Cairney for Pogba and Rashford for a -4,

      Smooths - Digne (17) TAA (11) Hazard (15) Pogba (30 as captain)

Rough - Rashford, Laporte, Ings, Sane, Sterling. - If man city had been on song, it would have been an unbelievable GW

After falling from 90k to 525k since GW12, this was a much needed big score! (back up to 310k)

Ended up on 97-4, so gotta be happy with that!

Rough; Mitrovic not scoring from seven chances. At least my intended replacement Ings didn’t punish me further.

Smooth; Brought Lingard in for one week for Gundogan - back to back one week punt success! Kane(c), Hazard, Salah, Richarlison, Robbo for 65 points.

Dipped to 79k though. Wildcard active now

      Rough:

Sold Anderson (15pts), Lacazette (6pts) and Snodgrass (2pts) for Pogba (15pts), Rashford (2pts) and Martial (0 mins) for a hit, which lost me 8 points in total, with Kamara (2pts) coming on for Martial.

Simply being patient instead of making changes before Christmas Day would have seen me going through with my backup plan: to make only 2 of the changes for free. Given that Martial didn't make the preliminary squad, I would have saved 19 points by avoiding him and keeping Anderson one more week.

      Smooth:

Points from Pogba (15pts), Digne (17pts), Aubameyang and captain Son (13pts).

77pts after the hit, rising from 104k to 93k.

Not sure many will be able to trump my “rough” this week...

Bit of both for me this week. Rough, benched Digne's 17 points and dropped 4k places too 9k. But a smooth 15 points from Anderson on Thursday night won me both my mini league matches and my cup game.

      Rough:
Accidentally transferred out Anderson (rather than the intended Snodgrass) for Martial. As a result, I now have £4.4m ITB.

      Smooth:
Digne came off my bench for Martial

Smooth -Got 86 points this week with my entire front line scoring except Ings. (Pereyra, Eriksen, Son, Hazard, Kane, Auba).

Rough - but Digne and his 17 pts were first on my bench....started Wan Bissaka, Kola and Doherty over him, much to my chagrin

After surveying the smouldering remains of my GW18 (in which I effectively transferred out Salah and Kane for Hazard and Sané(c) and came out with 34 pts) I thought "screw it, the reasoning behind those decisions was sound, I'm pretty much keeping my squad as it is."

Result: 91 pts, in no small part down to the fact I played AWB and Digne. Auba(c) also helped I guess...

It gets said on here all the time, but be patient people! A bad GW can be followed by an awesome one; especially if you can resist the temptation to rage-transfer or knee-jerk...

United can't defend. I'd look at Digne/TAA if you haven't got them.

Got Digne. Can’t get TAA in a straight swop got Kola and only 1FT. Could go Lovren or Holebas

I won't get any United defender. We can't keep CS atm.

Excitedly looked at my option to play Button whilst Ryan is away, and then I checked Brighton's fixtures.

Looks like Fabianski will perma-play 🙂

That's going to be a hell of a game, City must win it really I'd be very surprised if that one ended 0-0

Already done Sterling to Haz with my FT. Would you go Auba and Brooks to Rashford and Son for a -8? Maybe even Pogba?

Big no, Son is off soon and Rash is not nailed with Lukaku and Alexis returning

-8 is just too big unless you're going to captain one of them

Tough call. I suppose u cant do brooks to pogba or son without selling auba.

Will we get man city team news before deadline?

If sterling is getting benched needs to be sold as can't see him scoring vs Liverpool

Doubt it. I'd keep another week unless somehow confirmed out pre-deadline.
