Zaha in hot form ahead of second GW32 match

Eight Crystal Palace players registered FPL returns of six points or more on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles condemned Huddersfield Town to the drop.

While the end result of a Palace victory to nil was a largely anticipated one, Roy Hodgson’s side made heavy work of beating their Championship-bound visitors and spurned a succession of gilt-edged chances en route to a 2-0 win.

The hard-earned victory at least sets owners of Crystal Palace assets up for their forthcoming away matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United on Wednesday and Saturday; the Eagles have been better on the road this season and have scored almost twice as many league goals on their travels as they have at Selhurst Park.

We recap the events of what was only Palace’s fourth home win of the season in our Scout Notes article below.

Crystal Palace 2-0 Huddersfield Town

  • Goals: Luka Milivojevic (£6.3m), Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) x2

Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) now has nine attacking returns in his last ten Premier League starts after a brace of assists in his side’s win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) and – as of last night – Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) are the only FPL forwards who have been directly involved in more of their club’s goals in 2019.

The Ivory Coast international, who shook off a hamstring injury to play the full 90 minutes at Selhurst Park, won a 75th-minute penalty that Luka Milivojevic (£6.3m) subsequently converted and then set up Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) for the Eagles’ second goal close to full-time.

No Fantasy forward has registered more penalty box touches than Zaha this season and the former Manchester United winger was pushed up front alongside Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) in the second half after starting the match on the left of a front three.

Roy Hodgson said after full-time:

At half-time, things were looking bleak. So I must give our team an awful lot of credit for the way they came out in the second half. We made a couple of slight adjustments and in the second half, we were much more like ourselves.

I was very pleased that the players’ determination shone through. We pulled ourselves together. I thought pushing Wilf up front, and bringing McArthur in, made a difference to our play.

League goals at Selhurst Park continue to elude Zaha and indeed he has only scored once in south London this season.

The positive news for Zaha’s owners is that Palace’s next two fixtures are away from home, where the lively winger has been much more productive in 2018/19.

Zaha wasted two glorious chances to double his home tally for the season, failing to get a shot away when rounding Ben Hamer (£3.9m) and then firing wide when through on goal again in the 86th minute.

The Ivory Coast international also teed up Andros Townsend (£5.9m) for a big chance in the second half, one of several spurned by the hosts as frustration mounted.

Hodgson said after the match:

We created some really, really good goal chances. At one stage, I was worried it was going to be one of those games when I’d be sitting here and you would be telling me about the incredible misses you thought we’d been guilty of and it would have cost us points.

Luckily, I can laugh the misses off, as we got two goals to win the game. I’m hoping that if we create have as many chances against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, we won’t miss them.

Townsend was one of the chief culprits, spoiling that potential Zaha assist by screwing wide from eight yards and then slicing off-target shortly after.

Batshuayi also saw a first-effort blocked, before Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.5m) shanked an effort wide of Hamer’s goal – both chances set up by the increasingly involved van Aanholt.

The Dutch left-back had forced Hamer into a flying save before latching onto Zaha’s pass to score his first league goal in almost exactly six months.

Van Aanholt hasn’t failed to score five or more Premier League goals in a single season since 2014/15 and it was, coincidentally, starting in March 2018 when the former Chelsea and Sunderland defender embarked on a run of five goals in ten Gameweeks.

Marcos Alonso (£6.4m) is the only FPL defender to attempt more shots than van Aanholt this season.

For a player who poses little threat from open play, Milivojevic is once again having a stellar season in FPL.

Saturday’s strike was his tenth of the season (as many as he managed in 2017/18), nine of which have come from the penalty spot.

Of the ten penalties that the Serbian midfielder has taken this season (he missed from 12 yards against Everton in Gameweek 9), Zaha has been fouled for half of them – emphasising just how important the Ivorian’s trickery is to Milivojevic’s own appeal as a Fantasy asset.

Zaha, who also won four spot-kicks in 2017/18, is perhaps unsurprisingly the most-fouled FPL forward of this season by quite some margin.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m) also recovered from injury to bank a clean sheet for his owners but it wasn’t all plain sailing for Palace, with out-of-position FPL defender Chris Lowe (£4.4m) twice forcing good saves out of Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) and striker Karlan Grant (£5.0m) spurning an excellent opportunity just before half-time.

The fact that Guaita picked up a save point, two bonus points and the Palace fans’ man of the match award was a tribute to the Terriers’ display but this was the 17th league match of the season (and eighth of 2019) that Huddersfield have failed to score in.

Owners of Leicester City defenders will be therefore optimistic of a clean sheet when the Foxes face Jan Siewert’s side in Gameweek 33.

The Huddersfield boss said after full-time:

I think we did very well in the first half. We encountered tactical situations very well and had offensive possibilities against a team which has the quality of Wilfried Zaha, for example. It was really great to see the lads fighting for each other.

When you see this group on the pitch today, they made the home audience give them a round of applause after the game, even at half-time we were impressed. It was great for us to see that we did so many things right.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Wan-Bissaka; Tomkins, Dann, van Aanholt; Schlupp, Milivojevic, Meyer (McArthur 46′); Townsend (Kouyate 80′), Batshuayi (Benteke 73′), Zaha.

Huddersfield Town XI (4-4-1-1): Hamer; Smith, Schindler, Kongolo, Durm; Mooy, Bacuna (Williams 80′), Hogg, Lowe (Kachunga 80′); Pritchard (Stankovic 90′); Grant.

Bloody wish I hadn’t felt the need to spend all my ££ on this FH - has BSilva for a bit and Zaha for a while in my FH draft, only to go for DSilva and Higuain cod I had so much £ left over!!

Hopefully roles reversed in the second half of this DGW!

I've been thinking about this too and I'm gonna try and remember that lesson on WC, just because you have the money doesn't mean that spending it all is necessarily the best thing to do.

It's really tricky not to fall for that one, plus not including SGW players too.

Yep. Hindsight is a great thing, but using it now Higuain is crap, Zaha is threatening and always draws fouls and penalties, and BSilva probably been more instrumental to City this season!

I'm sure we all have thoughts like this about this FH week man. I feel similar in opting against Zaha/City defender over Higuain/cheaper defence.

        Too true.

If I had less money I’d have gone for Bernardo no doubt. Had him in early drafts but was able to get David Silva in so thought why not?

To be honest though, trying to guess which City players will do well is an absolute lottery at times. It’s not like going for David Silva was a ridiculous decision.

When did we know that Zaha is fit and plays? Higuain had two plum fixtures, so I understand my reasoning. Thought he might either haul or flop.

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
            5 years, 26 days ago

Yeah Zaha was flagged forever and we had no concrete news to suggest he’d play. If he was a certainty then 100% he’d been in my team. Instead I went for Batshuayi as I knew he was definitely fit.

Saying that I did take a chance on Rashford but you’ve got to be able to draw the line somewhere and not leave too much to chance.

Okay, thanks. Nothing to regret then. With hindsight everything is easy, but without crystal ball it would have been too risky move. Historical decisions should be judged with the information that was available when they were made.

I also had both Martial and Rashford, but there was some info that made them likely to play.

The Kun news to gutting, but a captain score of 10 is respectable, especially if he is someone most people are captaining.
        TCers have my sincere sympaties.

I guess 10 players can do a job, then.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri was asked if N'Golo Kante and Eden Hazard will start against Brighton.

“I don't know for the moment, but I think so," he said. "They were rested in the last match - all the match with N'Golo and for 55 minutes for Eden.

"But we need to consider that N'Golo, this season, has played 50 matches, and Hazard 48.

"In the last two weeks they played with their national teams for two matches, so sometimes they need to rest. But now they are okay, I think.”

I think so, one was injured and one was out of favour. If you're picking a triple captain that's the latter, then it's more bad judgement than bad luck imo. That said, coming off at 58 minutes in the Everton game was unfortunate.

He had only completed the 90 in 1 of his previous 5 PL games, including being subbed in the previous game against Newcastle in which they were losing.

Also, after De Bruyne came back he had started playing B Silva on the wing which further increased the likelihood of him being benched. Obviously there's an element of hindsight to what I'm saying, but it's also true that captaining him was a risk.

It's annoying, but probably not that big a deal this season. Most people will use it on a single GW player and it's only an extra lot of captain points effectively.

I'd probably do Fabianski to Dubravka or Kepa. Leicester looks obvious as they have the best fixture, but their defence has disaster written all over it. You never know if West Ham can be arsed and Chelsea are perfectly capable of conceding. I don't think there will be too many clean sheets this week.

Those who are so angered and frustrated by Kun being out and considering it awful luck, which other genuine captain candidate is doing well this week?
For it to be a bad pick you need players like Sterling or even Hazard to well, which they are not.
Let's just see where we stand with our 20/30 points on Thursday night.
Don't forget, the vast majority captained him anyway so there's not much difference.

With their increasingly impressive defence and coming in a game with a toothless Man U, not captaining him is your own stupid fault.

Yeah, I'm not that fussed about Kun being out tomorrow, it's going to come down to other players. I'm more concerned about not owning City defence, Kane or Jimmy.

To be fair, these decisions are probably gaining/losing no more than 10 points this week - when well over 2,000 points are scored over an FPL season, it's a drop in the ocean really.

I thought there'd at least be some sort of comment on sodomised followed by a smiley face.
But yeah, these are tiny things.
Nit getting Pogba, Hazard, Son, Salah etc at the right time cost me hundreds.

Everyone was going on and on about FH this week, but I built my team so I didn't need to free hit and saw the possibility of this double back in February so I could TC. Even had people on here telling me the Cardiff Fulham double wasn't likely. Would have paid off without this crap luck. Story of my season. The game rewards people who don't plan ahead.

          Pretty simple to understand?

Well the game itself has no bearing on whether your plan works out or not, how could it?

It simply applies a points system in accordance to real life football results.

Just because your plan hasn't worked out, whether you consider that luck or not, it's not the games fault.

Maurizio Sarri still hasn't confirmed when Callum Hudson-Odoi will make his first Premier League start but the Chelsea boss has just said: “Now he's ready to play. Probably he will start tomorrow or in the next match.”

Just cautioning against my man Jacky Boy, Sarri hasn't said he'll start tomorrow.

The strangest thing in all of this is that Sarri said CHO is better, and prefers to play on the left, so why on earth when he rested Hazard, does he still leave CHO on the bench is a real mystery.

        Best remaining option for TC?

        A) Vardy vs hud (33)
        B) Kane vs HUD (34)
        C) Kun/Sterling vs TOT/mnu (35)
        D) Salah/Mané vs HUD (36)
        E) other?

With Sergio Aguero ruled out for Manchester City, Gabriel Jesus is set to return up front.

Asked if the Brazilian striker was ready, City boss Pep Guardiola said: "Of course. He makes a good season. Always it is not easy to play in this club, a striker in the same position as Sergio.

"This season is the best Gabriel has played together with Sergio. He is a respectful guy. Tomorrow he is going to help us, to fight and score goals."

Even Warnock will be laughing when Pep said we're going to fight.

It's going to be a battering. Just a question of who gets the joy to beat 😛

the good old times were alexis sanchez gave me 75 points as TC. Expected something similar from kun.

ther good old times were berbatov (regular captain) gave me 58 points or something in a dgw.

If your expectations are 75 points from a player then you must spend a lot of time being disappointed

had he played 70 +70 minutes, he would have easily got 75 points. A Goal & assist vs Fulham already occured. A brace or a goal & assist at home to Cardiff (12 or 13 points) means he would have had 25 points atleast. times 3= 75 points. Do the maths. he would have probably scored another goal or assist vs fulham.
I think 75 points was a conservative expectation, if he banged a hattrick he could have had 100 points.
there was no way kun would have been rotated or rested as he had his rest in intl. break. All bcoz of a stupid injury.

a player who scores a hattrick against chelsea cannot score 1 goal and 1 assist atleast against relegated cardiff at home?

yes he would have played him cardiff at home. When Aguero is fit, he starts. As simple as that. When was the last time he was 'rested' for a PL game without an injury? He also didnt play intl. games so Kun would have started. He would have maybe been subbed after 65 or 70 minutes.
