What impact has new formation had on Targett and Villa’s defence?

Aston Villa’s recent formation change has had an impact on budget left-back Matt Targett (£4.4m).

As Villa continue to battle relegation from the Premier League, manager Dean Smith has adopted a 3-4-3 formation over the last few weeks.

He debuted the new system in the Gameweek 21 trip to Burnley, which produced a 2-1 win, and has used it ever since.

It has mostly featured Kortney Hause (£4.4m), Tyrone Mings (£4.5m) and Ezri Konsa (£4.3m) in the back-three, Targett has started the last three as the left wing-back since returning from an injury, while Frédéric Guilbert (£4.4m) has been the favourite on the right-hand side.

During this five-match period, Villa have won twice, drawn once and lost on two occasions. Those seven points have gone some way to helping Villa beat the drop, although there is still a long way to go.

Either way, it looks as if the 3-4-3 system is here to stay and, thankfully, it seems as if it may have unlocked the potential of Targett.

What has happened to Targett’s position?

This article tried to sell us Targett but the Villa defence is an absolute no-go so no thanks.

Did a good job selling Grealish though, for those that don't already know. Keeping for now

I agree. Im not for signing players who, in themselves, look good but are part of a bad unit. I wont be signing any villa defenders anytime soon.

I hope that one day FPL will change their price changing system.

I know some people like it and I agree that price of players must change over the season as its the part of this game but the way as it works is just awful.
We can discuss how it should be changed as many people will have their own opinion but ANY change in this system would be good.

First of all it is not transparent in a lot of situations. We have clear rules for this game but price changes are still unclear. Some players price is protected (I know why) and some isnt which is not fair imo. If FPL towers dont want a big price drops for players who are injured esp big hitters than make injured players price go down slower but ALL injured players!
Another thing is price changes as GW isnt finished yet. I hate it but I know that some managers like it (!). Lets stop price changes untill GW finish. I would even like price changes only after deadline and it even could still be 0.3 up/down IF that many people do the move.

We can discuss and change a bit the rules I wrote above and add some others as Im sure you have good ideas too but something must be done here imo.

      Agree,
As I said to someone on the last page, my one wish is for transparency on prices.
...and you make a good point, prices should be locked during the game week.

A major development IMO, and a straightforward one, would be to get rid of the 'competition' for the most valuable team. Loads of players make a load of transfers just to try and 'win' it and it's completely pointless, skewing prices particularly in the early stages of the season. That would take nothing from FPL towers except the removal of a widget from the frontpage of the site.

But it becomes an issue for the people playing the game the way it was designed to be played.

It's like me playing a game of Monopoly, but I enjoy it playing it by flipping the board over and punching all the other players in the face.

Well if I haven't got a hotel on Mayfair within 4 moves, then it's all over as far as I'm concerned.

..seriously though, I'm confused, I thought you were saying you don't have an issue with people who do play solely for team value - by making 20 transfers a week just to get the maximum TV.
I'm saying that impacts on the majority who plays for points - which is how I believe the game was designed to be played.

If the genuine players are getting priced out of moves they want to make because of these TV players, it's not fair.

From what I can see, those price predicting site is what triggers the market, if they didnt exist, movement would have been much slower.

Majority of teams are equally responsible to have impact on my team value as well. Just because I decide to make transfers on Saturday, I'm being penalised for that. In this case, not only those high TV teams are having impacts but others also do that.

I can blame those with 104m team value as well 😉

They are trying for high team value in exchange of poor rank. We are trying for high rank in exchange of comparatively poor team value. And I dont think they play that much role in driving the market as much as majority of us do.

The price prediction sites are only working off the data of ownership vs transfers in/out.
The teams seeking to 'win' maximum TV would just work off this same data - and I think what the cat grav guy is saying, is that by removing the widget from the main FPL screen - where they change there name to promote a podcast or whatever, then they wouldn't bother.

I do agree with you, that only a small percentage of the game overall play in this way, so it probably doesn't have a massive effect on the game, it's still annoying.

I honestly think the analogies used are apt, those people aren't playing the game how it's intended, and it's causing an unfair disadvantage to the rest of us, however small, and that's just not playing fair.

But playing for TV in this way means taking so many hits you can't compete and you damage the game for everyone else.

It's like turning up at a golf tournament and trying and get a made-up prize for making the biggest divot. You won't get a good score and you make it harder for everyone else to play.

I like the ESPN price system. Based on fantasy performance, the player's price gets increased/decreased by 0.1-0.3 and that happens only once a week, say deadline day.

Current system of random price change is atleast better than before.

Not sold on the stockpiling of FTs imo. It devalues the wildcard(s) since that is.currently the only way to make sweeping changes.

I don't think it should be unlimited stockpiling by the way

3 or 4 free transfers is light years away from a wildcard in fairness

And remember, to even get to that position in the first place you have to have the discipline to go three or four weeks without a transfer, which is a challenge in itself

Some may never use it, but it would be nice to have the CHOICE not to use it

IMO it's silly that most players in the game don't know about price changes - the equivalent of FPLstats should be on the front page of the FPL website to have a level playing field and for transparency about how the changes work.

Also think there is an issue with most FPL teams having around 20 of so common choices and there being tons of players who are unviable on a price to points basis. e.g. Lo Celso is clearly massively overpriced at £7.3m but since he is in 0.3% of teams, he won't have the volume of transfers out for him to ever fall much further. However if he were 5m, maybe he could be of interest.

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years

I agree it is an issue that the majority of midfield players have no value in FPL terms.

....and to think, we see people on here complaining that the likes of Mane, Salah, Son, and any other attacking wide player (in 4-3-3 systems) should be classified as a forward.

Who do you want in midfield? Rice, Kante, Fred, and Dier?!

        1. Long ago I drew a walrus
          • 13 Years
          4 years, 2 months ago

Several issues at play here. Firstly it could be argued that defensive midfielders SHOULD get more credit - Kante was an still is a beast, Rice arguably WHU's best player, players like J Hend as well get a bad rep in FPL even though they are great in real life. Obviously not very easy to devise a points system to reflect this and arguably not as interesting so don't see it happening any time soon.

Secondly, midfielders in ages gone by would actually play in midfield and provide some goals and many assists. I started playing in the days when Gerrard and Lampard, later on Fabregas, were staple picks. These days it is arguable that KDB is the last of this type of midfielder in the top reaches of the PL. It feels to me like how the game (football) has developed and the game (FPL) hasn't really kept up.

Agree with all you have said.

Of course it is difficult for FPL, as not every team plays 4-4-2 anymore.
Are wing backs now midfielders, are false nines midfielders..etc.

I can only see it working if FPL split team selection into 5 'zones' shall we say. So you have to have two 'defensive' midfielders - but they get 2 points for a clean sheets, whereas you're attacking mids get none.

Just an idea, and probably too complicated to work....but it's something.

Hi community! sorry for report but bottomed on page 1!

I'm trailing in my main ML by about 80 points. I made 50 points up over January with a somewhat template team. With fixtures turning for number of teams I'm not sure whether its time to wild card.

    Current team
    Button/Pope
    VVD/TAA/Soy/Lund/Rico
    Salah/KDB/Grealish/Trarore/Martial

    Mcarthy/Pope
    TAA/Rico/O'conell/Boly/ Lascelles
    Salah/KDB/Mooy/Hayden/Richarlison*

After this week i would swap out Aguero and Richarlison for Mane and Jiminez.

Looks like a weak defence but Sheff U are top 6 worthy in the sense of defencive returns and Bolys return hopefully should sure up wolves defence.

Might be a long shot but if any Liverpool fan here is on the auto cup scheme and will be eligible for tickets for Chelsea vs Liverpool FA Cup, please email me. Willing to pay over FV. Might be able to swap for a home game this season, bar the probable trophy lift.

    Will play 4-3-3 most weeks

    Hendo Pope

Ok I’m a bit confused because the FPL app hasn’t changed for me. Is it worth wildcarding or using a FH chip to field 11 this week?

    Ryan
    Baldock, Robertson, TAA
    Grealish, Rico, Salah, KDB
    Vardy, Ings, Jiminez

    Button, Dendoncker, Kelly, Traore

    I have 0FTs and 2itb

@STOICHKOV#8, whilst we're changing the world, we need to have a serious think about bonus points too. At the moment they are ridiculous. They do not reward good performances, they double-reward things that already score points, which means that players who do something to score points are also much more likely to score extra points, meaning that potentially better players, who might have contributed more the the team, get overlooked.

Simply put, BAPS should not be scored for things that score FPL points except where the action is a positive action in its own right.

For example: Key passes should count the same regardless of whether they create an assist. That key chance created, that perfect slide-rule pass which sets the striker up with a simple 1v1 chance? That should be rewarded exactly the same in the baseline BAPS system regardless of what a completely different player, the striker, does with that chance. How can one player's BAPS score be lower because the big chance was/was not converted?

BAPS for goals. It's a shot on target. They should get rewarded the same. Even more silly is the 'winning goal' bonus. A forward is there to score goals. If it's the winning goal in a comeback 2-1 it shouldn't count more if it's the one which wins the match than his colleague who scored the equaliser. without the equaliser the winning goal couldn't have won the game. They are equally important goals.

This way we will get more chances of BAPS for players who, for example, boss the midfield and set up a hatful of chances which are not converted. More ways for players to score points, more reason to have a greater selection/range of FPL players.

Agree with this. So many good players who just aren't viable FPL players because their good work is unrewarded with BAPS.

Maddison would get 3 baps every game

      1. Make Arrows Green Again
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

Well it would have to be balanced out. You shouldn't get a load of baseline BAPS for each positive contribution, but they should all add up in a really good performance. For example, KdB against Spurs created three big chances and had two shots on target. Statistically he was probably the best player on the pitch, but the chances of him getting any BAPS being on a non-scoring losing side are close to zero.

True but Barnes out is good news for Wood and he has a very steady scoring record over last 18 months - likely to tick over nicely and there’s a major fixture turn

That still doesn't make him a better option than Jimenez or Ings given their fixtures, form and the teams they play for are much more attacking than Burnley.

Actually looking at potential frontline of Jim Ings Barnes with Mo Mane KdB Son behind them. I’m thinking Barnes is as good as any equivalent priced mid.

The alternative is to get Vardy back which may happen of course

              Barnes or Wood?

Yup I'm thinking similar. Either I downgrade Aguero to Vardy or another budget striker and invest the money in midfield.

                Whoops Wood.

This is almost preseason template revisited just minus Sterling and double Liverpool attack instead.

Also looking at Pérez Wood rotating in 8th attacker spot. Joked at beginning of season that I’d only look at Pérez from 28 on as he’s a late season specialist.

Fair point about winter break. I’m selecting Mane on the same basis.

I’m probably selling Kun after this week anyway to free up funds elsewhere but that’ll be harder if he hauls of course 🙂 On balance I suspect he misses EFL cup assuming he doesn’t start them all

Oh sh*t, when he scored 4? Of course. I ran a stats check and saw that his record against Leicester is 5 goals in 9 games and didn't think more of it. Suppose 1 in 8 outside of that anomaly is what's more likely to happen lol
