Scoutcast Episode 322 – Tackling the Blank Gameweek

Gameweek 28 marks one of a number of fixture hurdles facing Fantasy Premier League managers during the season run-in. Tough decisions lie ahead, with Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Sheffield United all skipping a league match due to the clash with the EFL Cup final.

Out Scoutcast trio of Joe, Karam and Az are on hand to answer your questions about whether the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£10.8m), Jack Grealish (£6.7m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) are worth benching or replacing.

Meanwhile, Manchester United finally have a creative player in their squad. This latest episode considers how Bruno Fernandes (£8.2m) is shaking up the Red Devils’ attack and the FPL template, as one of a number of emerging mid-priced midfield gems.

Leicester City’s fixture turn, starting at relegation certainties Norwich City this weekend, also comes under scrutiny. Is Jamie Vardy’s (£9.7m) reputation enough to reward his backers? Or are their better, low-owned Foxes that deserve more attention?

Karam takes his turn selecting a differential for the next month, following Holly’s great choice of Manchester United’s Fernandes last week. There are clean sheets to consider and Az’s ‘Rough with the Smooth’ round-up of your Gameweek 27 scores takes in one Scoutcast regular’s audacious Bench Boost success.

    GK Pope
    DEF TAA, Saiss, Stephens, Williams
    MID Salah, Mane, Traore (Grealish)
    FWD Ings, Jiminez

    Subs Cathcart, (Auba), (KDB)

Dont want to sell Auba for Vardy as id want him straight back.

So reluctantly Grealish has to go.

Anyone looking at Harry Wilson? Would give me 6 players already for GW 31 so could avoid free hit.

Bournemouth have a good record v Chelsea and his fixtures in 30,31,32 are fine b4 I potentially wildcard

Other move is likely to be Williams to Lascalles

    Cheers

    The Review - GW 27

Greetings everyone! Here I pen my thoughts on the climate of the FPL stratosphere as I once again run the scanner over the happenings of the Premier League weekend:

(Raw data taken from FFScout with permission)

    1) Over the previous 7 Premier League seasons, after 27 GW’s, the average number of shots conceded inside the box and big chances conceded by the worst defensive team in the league have been ≈267.86 and ≈64.14 respectively. After going through the data, I can confidently say that this season to date has witnessed some of the worst defending in the league’s history. To put things into context, at this stage, Villa have conceded 330 shots inside the box while West Ham have conceded 86 big chances. The FPL repercussion is that the findings cannot be more obvious, target attackers who play against these teams!

    2) Trent Alexander Arnold and Andy Robertson against West Ham accumulated the highest number of chances created by full backs in a single Premier League game this season. Together they created thrice the amount of chances created by West Ham in the entire game. It’s only February and Trent has already approximately created as many chances as the sum of the best defensive chance creators of 17/18, 16/17 and 15/16 over the three seasons combined. That is scary, scary stuff.

    3) 19 shots for Wolves this weekend with 13 in the box, 5 big chances and an xG of over 3. I fear Norwich might be beginning to collapse like Fulham last season now that there's little chance of safety with each passing week. Translation: Keep Vardy. I know that Leicester are out of sorts and Vardy having missed 4/4 of his previous big chances is woefully out of form. However, Vardy is too clinical a striker for that to continue forever. Vardy averages ≈9 points per game in the reverse fixtures against his 4 upcoming opponents. I fancy Vardy and Leicester to pick up form and go bang bang at the weekend.

    4) Chelsea's defensive numbers at home against the better Premier League attacks this season have been elite. Against Spurs, Arsenal, Leicester, Liverpool and United this season they have conceded 8 times despite having a combined xGc of just 2.62 hence their defensive performances have been masked. The disparity in their defensive data home and away is huge – at home they have been conceding ≈4.64 shots inside the box per game (vs ≈7.15 away) and ≈1.28 big chances per game (vs ≈1.92 away).

    5) Ever since returning from a hamstring injury, Patrick Van Aanholt has taken 13 corners for Palace in 3 games and has been sharing free kicks as well. For a team as dependent on set pieces as Palace, that adds huge appeal to Van Aanholt’s value as a fantasy asset. Van Aanholt created 6 chances, including 2 big chances, this week which further meant that he accumulated baseline bonus faster than any other defender (keeper included) in his team.

    6) Just 4 chances created for Spurs this week further highlights their struggles without Son. Since GW20, no team has conceded fewer big chances than Wolves while Spurs have been conceding over 2 a game which indicates another tough test and possibly more points for Jimenez and co at the weekend.

    7) The dissimilarity in the defensive numbers between Jose Mourinho’s first 8 weeks at the helm at Spurs and what followed later couldn’t be more apparent. From GW 13-20, Spurs were conceding shots inside the box at ≈6.875 per game which soon leapt up alarmingly to ≈10.43 per game between GW 21-27. Correspondingly, big chances conceded per game also rose precariously from ≈0.75 to ≈2.43.

    8) Another manager whose honeymoon period appears to be coming to an end is Watford’s Nigel Pearson. Over the past five weeks, Watford have conceded ≈11 shots in the box per game (vs ≈8.50 under him previously) and ≈2 big chances per game (vs ≈1.33 under him previously). Liverpool’s impressive attacking stats, Watford’s slump in form and the fact that Salah has more goals against Watford than against any opponent in his PL career means that I’ll have a hard time looking past Salah as my captain this week.

I want to captain Vardy. But everything points towards a massive Salah haul and rank suicide if I do. Love your snippets of data, some of my favourite content on the site.

Salah top or close to top in most attacking metrics. Watford are terrible and getting worse.

And good luck to you too. I've been switching between the two all week, usually I'm much more decisive. Vardy could destroy a woeful Norwich, but that's all about the opponent, rather than attacking form of Leicester.

True, past experience of switching has never worked out for me, so think I’ll go with my first instinct. I think Liverpool are on the beach. Only got going against West Ham when they went behind. Prob 2-0 or 2-1 to pool. Scorers could be anyone.

Very true, I think to be honest I feel the same way. If I had Mane I'd captain him this week. I think he will outscore Salah and seems to have the edge when Liverpool are away.

Fantastic as ever, a weekly highlight.

Own Mane and Salah, currently swinging towards Mane captain again due to Salah's ok, but not brilliant away statistics (particularly when Mane also starts).

I think the Chelsea defence stats were being undermined by Kepa. Might see some improvement now Willy is in goal (at least back to average rather than underperformance)

      1) Ings might be a great cheeky captain shout
      2) If you don't have TAA you ain't playing the game right
      3) Will be hard to watch the game on Friday without some Leicester
      4) Reece James?
      5) Just can't dig a Palace player right now, a cheap defender at a push Cahill probably due a haul
      6) and 7) - more reasons to load up on Wolves
      8) It's Klopp roulette - which number from 9, 10, 11 comes in this week?

      Great read as always...

How can you say that Chelsea’s defensive numbers are elite when they’re conceding so many more goals than xGc? Surely that means that their defence is bad and worse than expected...?

Such a good example of stats masking the actual performance levels.

Depends on your OR and ML situation. Consolidating Salah, chasing Mane. I have both and going Salah but I have a decent OR and top of my cash MLs, Im still tempted to go Mane but don't think it would be a smart decision.

With coronavirus cases increasing in London (and probably other parts of the country), it's a good idea to have your VC from a different team to your C - just in case any games get postponed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that Manchester United picked up "a couple of knocks" in training ahead of the Bruges game.

Ole making up excuses for playing Lingard and Pereira...

Feels like a trap to me but I don't know who else to go for as a Grealish replacement. Can't stretch to Fernandes. Have considered Mount and McNeil but not convinced by them either.

I am in the same boat. Have 2FT's but looking to throw a third into the mix for a -4 to create funds for a Fernandes or Martial move. Mind you, the latte of them could turn out to be a dud too.

You could save but I think I'd rather have Barnes or Mount than double Newcastle/Southampton defences.

He looked very threatening in recent games and was getting presented with plenty of chances. Iheanacho has a knock. Leicester are playing the worst team in the PL. Their from 'looks' to be returning - albeit not translating into results but they did play well against the 2nd best team in the league.

Setting up my team almost dependent on clean sheets as I want to roll on a transfer.
I have that midweek itch that suggests I don’t have the lineup available to our score rivals or protect rank
And yet if I get lucky and roll the transfers I can possibly bring in Grealish/auba combo
Or one involving Vardy the following week.
Anyone else hoping that inactivity in an blank game week prospers ?

    A) Hayden & Aubameyang -> Richarlison & Vardy (-4) - 11 nailed starters. 2 Transfers needed to get Aubameyang back if/when needed
    B) Hayden & Aubameyang -> Barnes & Vardy (-4) - 11 nailed starters. Can get Aubameyang back straight away
    C) Hayden -> Barnes (or any mid up to 7.8M). Need Hayden to start.
    D) Aubameyang -> Vardy. Need Hayden OR Williams to start.
    E) Save FT. Need both Hayden & Williams start.

Thinking B to ensure I have 11 this week and get Aubameyang back without a hit (no value tied up).

    Cheers

Salah vs Mane is an easy decision for me because one is on pens. Dont own Vardy but form over fixtures, wouldn't captain.

Was thinking of getting Alonso in for the BGW for Lundstram, but you still he's playing after the red card yesterday? I know it doesn't affect the prem with a red in CL but maybe Lampard's freaking out. Give me your thoughts, see him as a nice differential.

    Two options:

Grealish to Barnes and have Rico as B1 who might come on and get a point

    or:

Rico to Sais and have no bench back up but be more set for the upcoming weeks
