Using xG data to identify the best low-owned options for Gameweek 28 and beyond

Six-time top 5k finisher Utkarsh Dalmia – aka Zophar –  talks us through some alternative FPL assets as we approach the second Blank Gameweek of the campaign.

The first truncated Gameweek of the season is upon us and the phrase “a hit is only a minus two this week” is being thrown about as usual.

There is some logic to this – if one of your players is going to score zero points this week, then selling him for someone who has a fixture should secure a minimum of two points for an appearance alone.

However, this not always the case, with rotation, yellow cards and conceding goals often having an effect. You also might end up, as Triggerlips used to say, “throwing the baby out with the bathwater” if you sell someone like Kevin De Bruyne (£10.8m)

For the purpose of this article, I’m focusing on identifying lesser-owned players who I believe can repay a hit this week as well as form part of your squad for the next three weeks leading up to Blank Gameweek 31. I’m ignoring goalkeepers as their ceiling is quite low.

First, I’m looking at the Custom Table for xGOT (expected goals on target) both for and against over the last four Gameweeks to identify the whipping boys, and then looking at the Season Ticker to see which teams play them.

As this piece draws heavily on stats from our Members Area, most of it is available only to subscribers.

In terms of my team, Barnes will likely come in for Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m). With Leroy Sane (£9.3m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) nearing fitness, I’m not confident of the Algerian’s prospects for the long term despite the rumours (and they are only that, for now) of a possible Double Gameweek 29 for the champions.

This will leave me with £4.2m in the bank. so I’m tempted to take a hit for Pereira or Doherty to sort out the Martin Kelly (£4.2m)/Diego Rico (£4.3m) problems but would also like to have some cash in the bank to make moves for City players if they do indeed have a double next week.

Bringing in Jota for Mason Greenwood (£4.3m) is also an option but after his display against Watford, I think selling him for a hit could potentially backfire.

All the Custom Tables used are accessible in the Members Area. Hope you enjoyed reading.

An FPL veteran of 10 seasons, Utkarsh Dalmia has been a member of the site right since 2009 and has finished in the top 5k in six of those campaigns, with a best finish of 17th in 2010. A Chelsea fan based in India, he relies heavily on statistics for his FPL decision-making process.

23 forwards have played more minutes than Aguero this season, Harry Kane is still 6and a half hours of football ahead.
    Pukki is 16 hours ahead!
He’s on the same number of points as Pukki and 7th overall on forwards 19 points ahead of Kane , I don’t think he’s worth his price right now because of Pep rotation same with all City assets that aren’t KDB and being joint on points with the bottom of the league striker is nothing to get excited about but when looking at the numbers myself I was shocked and thought it was interesting enough to make a post about.
    Jesus doing similar numbers.

I guess that's why Sterling scored so many points last season - it was the closest we had in FPL to a nailed-on City striker.

An Aguero that starts anything close to 38 games is 300+ material, and Jesus wouldn't be too far behind.

He’s only gotten 90 minutes on nine occasions this season

12G & 3A for 87 points in those nine full 90’s, albeit two were blanks (WOL, WHM)

Any ideas? Probably makes sense to save 1FT but struggling to find a good use for the other this week....

    Ryan*
    TAA, Aurier, Soyuncu, Stephens
    Salah, Martial, Perez, Moura
    Vardy, Ings

    Button, Williams, Dendoncker, Auba
    Bank 0.0m, 2FT

    * 4.6 selling price so can’t afford a switch to Pope

Now this looks like a rare example of a team with 2FTs and a full XI for this GW. I honestly don't know - not sure I see much difference between Pope and Ryan this week anyway. I don't think either Newcastle or Palace will get that many shots on target so we're looking at 6 points max from either of them barring any unusual occurrences.

Since you have the spare transfer, fancy selling Auba and buying him back next week? I'd fancy Jimenez's chances vs. that Spurs defence...

Yeah I was thinking of an Auba Hokey Cokey (perhaps Firmino), but I would lose 0.1m of value in selling Auba so wouldn’t be able to get him back. Moura & Perez haven’t been great picks - any decent replacements in that price bracket? Williams is probably the first that should go, but there’s not much out there for 4.1m!

I would absolutely keep Perez given the fixture, but I understand the frustration. I'm a long-suffering Lucas Moura owner myself too, but I don't see anyone I want in that bracket so I'm keeping for now.

Williams seems to be quite predictable in that he starts the tougher matches as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation. As you say there's no nailed on starter at that price so you might as well keep since you know what you're getting at least.

I was just looking into penalty records of various players out of curiosity after the KDB one earlier. He hasn't taken many in his career, in fact this was only his fourth competitive penalty and first since December 2016, when his effort was saved by Maarten Stekelenburg. Would be interesting to see if he keeps taking them - I suspect Aguero would still be no. 1 when on the pitch.

If he’s genuinely first choice now surely that’s a minimum 11.5 price tag next year

Maybe 12.0 or more considering he has DFKs & corners

So what’s the most popular chip strategy at the moment?

    FH31
    WC35/36
    BB37

No point worrying about that until this time next week with the GW31 fixtures.

It seems like there are more people saving the FH for a DGW, possibly 34. But maybe they are just more actively posting than managers who plan to FH31.

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

There’ll really need to be FA Cupsets to generate any more than 3-4 games in GW31

Wol v Bou & Bur v Wat are guaranteed so Taylor, Pope, Boly, Doherty, Traore, Jimmy, Jota will be a popular pool of players to have 4-5 from using FTs between now & then - and crucially also aren’t useless outside of GW31

~80% chance Norwich v Everton should go ahead so Rich and/or DCL can join the party

Then maybe Liverpool kids go out bringing another 3 players in for most in GW31 so 8-9 starters should be easy with the 4x FTs between now & then

Either way - would you want to FH that fixture list vs getting 11x handpicked, one-week only, no-strings attached DGW’ers later?

22x scores in one GW could possibly be hard to look past imo

Cheers. Yeah that 31 fixture list looks pretty desperate so think it makes sense to plan for 31 and use the FH chip for a no strings DGW. That being said, I currently only have 1 player from the 6 teams likely to play 31 and that is Dendoncker....given this would you still advise saving the FH past 31?

It’s all situational - but with FT’s for GW27, 28, 29, 30 & 31 available, would you not start targeting the likes of Taylor & Boly who are more than cheap enough to be benchable if necessary & Jimmy/DCL who are also reasonably priced & good assets in their own right

Throw in Pope & Rich you’re straight away at 5-6 starters with - which is where a lot of folks would be - Liverpool can make it 9-ish without even taking a Transfer Hit, let alone a Free Hit

Thing is I’d then be using my next 5FT to bring in players from rubbish teams or teams with tough fixtures up to 31. Wolves is probably the only exception to this.

Really? Which players are from rubbish teams?

Burnley have the most home clean sheets in the league, more than Liverpool even - so Pope & Taylor are grand (Taylor is a glorified 4th/5th def anyways)

Boly, Rich, Jimmy all good players in good form... Traore has a question mark Over him of late but he's cheap...

What am I missing with the rubbish players piece 🙂

Yeah I can buy into getting Wolves assets now, but Burnley have TOT/mcy in 2 of their 3 games before 31.

Also, I’d rather be using FTs to rotate heavy hitters as they have the bigger ceilings.

I think if you have a few WOL/BUR players already then it’s easier to make a case for not FHing in 31. For my lot I’m struggling to do that even though I’d rather save it for a DGW

                  * Everton also have awful fixtures before and after the blank 31, yet in 31 they have a plum fixture, which works well for a 31 FH

That's where your bench comes in though!

Don't be playing Taylor in 31/32, bench him, he's only 4.2...get Pope the week before or the week of GW32 if you only have 1 GK - but team values are so high now you should be able to carry two playing keepers

Rich is Rich - OOP forward in a Carlo Ancellotti team for 8.0, and the wolves assets we know about anyways - Boly & Jimmy are good before, during and after GW31... DCL if you wanted to go there also has merits (assuming Norwich don't shock spurs)

Not seeing where the rubbish players or rubbish teams come into the equation - unless someone is advocating getting Bournemouth or Watford assets which I wouldn't be a fan of doing personally!

Don't know the weeks but -

WC the week before a DGW with a good TC option. Trying to look as far ahead with that WC.

Freehit for next DGW and best 11, fodder bench.

Could Freehit before WC depending on how team is doing.

2FTs, 0.5itb -- Not a lot of options without a hit or losing Auba, which I'm not big on.

          1) Grealish, Fleck > Barnes, Traore

Looking for 3rd Wolves player given they play both blanks and got some decent fixtures. Would play ahead of Mooy. Already have Jiménez and Boly. Which 3rd player would you get? 1 m in bank

A Traoré ( no easy route unless drops to 5.8 when could get for Mooy and in new set up may have lost regular start)
B Doherty ( probably for Fernández)
C Saiss ( again for Fernández)
            D Keep team as is

            Pope
            TAA Boly Stephens
            Salah Mané Barnes Mooy
            Jiménez DCL Ings

            Henderson Fernández KDB Stevens

I’m sure we don’t know yet for certain but are there many teams that are likely to have a DGW in 34 and 37?

If not, I guess saving the free hit for one of those weeks is pretty important...!?

                So a potential strategy...

                FH 31
WC 32 or 33 (full of Man City)
                BB in 34 or 37

Between 34 and 37, can make transfers to plan for the second double??

Thanks very much! So basically only Man City with both doubles,

So if FH in 31, WC in 32 and BB in 34, you would need to make 8 transfers in 3 game weeks to get a full team of double players for GW37?

                    No, City shows very unlikely.
Villa and Sheff Utd have the highest chance.

                        Leicester players are 28-30 ones.

Fixtures for bottom half teams is unlikely to be good based on those predictions. Will make it tough to get a decent bench for BB.

Will be easier for high team value squads I guess

For me though, it’s pretty tough to plan for GW31.... if Liverpool beat Chelsea, I’m screwed if I don’t FH.

                  I currently have:
                  - 1 Wolves
                  - 1 Everton

Focus on Burnley and Wolves. Everton likely in 31.
If Pool win, most of us will FH31 depending on if Pool are still in CL and have won the league.

Yeh good advice. I could bring in Westwood for Grealish this week to allow Ayew to Jota next.

Just doesn’t feel right compared to my Grealish to Barnes move!

Just don't lose out on too many points in the next 3, because you are looking to make up 10 points in 31

What do you think of this strategy though....
                          - plan transfers now for DG34
                          - FH in 31
                          - WC in 35

Haha true but surely those that blank in GW31 get an extra game in GW34 (unless they clash with FA Cup semis)?

I think 34 is too far away, and no info. Same for 31 actually. I think Barnes/Perez are good picks for the next 3. Depending on fixtures, I'm looking to WC 32/33. BB34 (less rotation than 37) and FH 37/38

            Sidibe out for who?

            A) Evans/Soy? (Is Evans worth the .2 extra?)
            B) Chilwell (worth the extra cash than A?)

Try to get Salah instead of VVD for 3rd Pool spot! Upgrade Richarlison to Salah! Downgrade VVD & Alonso! Downgrade DCL to Long!

For those of us who have used the wildcard navigating BGW31 with FTs seems the best plan?

Looking at the fixtures that will go through in GW31 it does seem like a sensible startegy.

                  BUR vs WAT
                  WOL vs BOU
NOR vs EVE (if TOT beat NOR)
NEW vs AVL (if WBA beat NEW)

Liverpool not blanking would make the decision very easy.

But Liverpool not blanking will not give added advantage to us who have been planning early for GW31? I think us planners are better off with people burning their FH on lowly teams or fielding very few players?

I agree it won't give us an advantage but it would mean those of us not using the FH can also field 9-11 players.

Without using FH I'm currently looking at only 6-7 players.

Honestly I'm okay with them blanking or not but would obviously prefer they blank as that could trigger more Free Hits.

Yes. Liverpool blanking or not will not have much effect as almost everyone owns 3 Pool (or will own 3 in 31). Them blanking will make more people use FH to get major players who us planners would have already got. Effectively nullifying the advantage of FH chip. (sorry, just realized I was only elaborating the point you were trying to make 😀 )

The tricky decision for me here is what to do with players like Grealish/Traore who have a decent chance of playing in 31 but in Grealish's case Villa have tough fixtures and Traore might have lost his position in the starting 11.

Using the FH means that you can ignore planning for 31 and avoid buying the dross that will play in that GW.... you will probably get red arrows in the run up as a result of ‘planning’ for 31

                Ignoring GW 31 atm.
Will try N save a FT by GW 29 deadline & go in GW 31 with 2 FT.

Keeping FH for biggest Dgw (most probably 37)

If i had BB I'd still gone with same strategy. BB in GW where your bench is in good state & FH in other one

Keeping FH for the one of the DGWs does seems sensible for us as it would be tough to build a team for both DGWs with our FTs.

I have to start planning or atleast start thinking about BGW31. The two players I'm looking to sell this week (Grealish or Traore) both have a good chance of playing in GW31.

I would ignore GW31 to be honest, quality of teams other than Wolves is unreliable for long term. Getting them and then getting rid seems waste of transfers

                  Agree with that.

I could get away with Triple Wolves, DCL/Rich, Taylor and maybe one more depending on the fixtures.

No effect of his price drop. You can blame Jimenez price rise 😀

Trying hard to keep Aubameyang though, captaincy material vs WHM in 29 and vs NOR in 32

              Couple of quick questions

              1) Chances of Rico starting this gw?
              2) Any injury news on D.Stephens from bright? might need him to come on as 1st sub
              3) What to do with Grealish? Bought @6.2 and can sell @6.4. Keep or twist for either perez/barnes
