Recapping the best Southampton players ahead of FPL restart

With just days to go before the Premier League season restarts, our series of team-by-team refresher articles continues with a look at Southampton.

Taking data from Gameweeks 24-29 as a jumping-off point for wider analysis, we will be discussing the players from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad who most catch the eye.

Fantasy managers may well be swerving the Saints to start off, with some tricky matches to come between Gameweeks 31+ and 35+.

Should the south coast club still have ‘something to play for’ come the fixture swing in Gameweek 36+, however, then they will likely re-enter the radar at that point.

With this article borrowing heavily from the data available in our Members Area, only subscribers of Fantasy Football Scout can read on.

    Fleck and Basham
    or
    O’Connell and Cantwell?

    (can’t afford Fleck and O’Connell)

Best midfielder upto 6.2m for GW31 only.

I have a Villa slot left so McGinn is an option, however I am leaning towards a SGW option, likely Redmond or Mount.

Any suggestions or thoughts on this?

Anyone else got a feeling clean sheets are going to be very scarce? I think defence has to go one of two ways really cheap and not care or expensive and go for wing backs and players with attacking potential with the risk they get hooked early with the 5 subs

That’s what I’m thinking, I was tempted to play a chip but i don’t think anybody has any idea how it’s gonna go and if the friendly games are anything to go off nobody is gonna be solid at the back. Think it’ll be a goal fest and results and scores will send everyone scrambling who doesn’t have their 2nd WC

Andy looked at 30 x GW30+ teams submitted via Twitter. The conclusion?

"43% had at least 2 Sheffield United defenders,
and 43% also had 3 or more,
so 86% of all the teams that I looked at,
Again, 30 teams, small sample size, but you can imagine, if I'd checked another 30, I'd sure it would be very similar...
So 86% had at least 2 Sheffield United defenders"

    😐 What a rollercoaster! 😆

Need some advice guys, on bb, wc31.
    Should I keep
Bruno + reina, oconnel, Egan, basham, saiss

    Or downgrade Bruno to
Mcginn + hendo, Stevens, Egan, Doherty + 4.6 def (target or any Sgw player)

Sgw Bruno could easily outscore dgq Bruno but I get nice upgrades if I get mcginn.

Is this worth giving up 1.5M of TV for?

    Leno Henderson
    Lundy Stevens Targett Saiss Fernandez
    Mahrez KDB McGinn Grealish Özil
    Auba Kun Jimi

TV is irrelevant .... how many players would you be selling and then buying back again next week

The only gw38 players that I still have are TAA and Bruno ... just sold Jimenez and will have to spend an extra 200K to buy him back for gw31+

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

would probably get TAA, Salah/Mane, DCL back, maybe Pope, probably about 1.0 TV in those players alone right now

        cant work out whats best

but do you think as a general idea that it makes sense to get 12 DGW players in and then do WC?

        1. HashAttack
          • 7 Years

I've ended up with 10 dgw players - just 2 from each of ARS and AVL
My singles are Dubravka, TAA, Doherty, Bruno and Tammy

My gw38 TV was 109.7 ... it's now 108.7 - but after my WC I expect my subs will be worth 1M less

    Henderson Soy Barnes Nketiah

Salah is out but I only lose 0.3 on him. Had more value tied up in Soy, TAA and KdB. Just not sure about Pepe...

Assume the 2nd Henderson is a mistake.

I'm not the biggest fan of McGinn or Soyuncu; same with you on Pepe - but it is what it is, a punt.

Nketiah is a bit of a risk - but at least an enabler. Looking at how Arteta is moving around formations to fit Saka in, I would be tempted to downgrade McGinn & upgrade Nketiah. Samatta may actually be a better pick than McGinn anyway.

How much would it leave you with, though?

Soy could be shifted to a Newcastle defender & -perhaps- a shift on Pepe.

      The rest is fine.

Think I'm set on my plan:

    GW30 team to Bench Boost:

    Leno | Henderson
    TAA | Egan | Lundstram | Lascelles | Tanganga
KDB | Mahrez | Grealish | El Ghazi | Douglas Luiz
    Aubameyang | Aguero | Jimenez

    GW31 transfers:

El Ghazi & Aguero > Salah / Mane & DCL

    GW32 Free Hit

    GW33 Wildcard

    1. Reckoner.
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

Should have a good enough team in GW31 to ride it out with the 2 transfers for -4. Tanganga the big risk for the 2 gameweeks I guess.

Could spend 0.2 more (4.3) but then that rules out the Salah over Mane option.

    Keeping the WC
    Keeping the FH

Dont go overboard with doublegw players with playing time that have likely less than 120min (as Salah Vardy Jimmy and co get 90 too)
as I might be stuck with Mahrez instead of Salah until the WC wgich i dont wanna play before 33 after City vs Liverpool to get informatikn on how theyre all gonna line up and esp after we see who will still play for smth

Also Uniteds fixture dont become perfect before 33 and Villas Arsenals are good until then.
But except KDB and maybe Laporte its a reach.
Id like Aguero but cant get there without sacrificing Salah even if i go Aguero to Vardy after this week.

      Currently thinking

      Henderson Leno
O Conell Egan TAA Doherty Soy

      Salah KDB Grealish McGinn Saka

      Auba Jimmy Jota

3wolves seems like no overload if keeping the WC

Pre-covid, GW32 looked optimal for a bench boost but going with the flow and doing it this week now

9.2m for a gk & def, who would you consider? Dont mind if its a sgw player with some good immediate fixtures too.

Going for McGinn at this stage seems a bit of a lottery pick

Not sure how many mins he would play after a lengthy absence. Could easily be gold if plays both games and gets an assist for example.
