Fernandes on penalty-taking duties for United as Premier League clubs play friendlies

Several Premier League clubs were in behind-closed-doors action over the weekend as preparations continue for the restart of the 2019/20 campaign.

You can read how the top-flight sides fared in earlier friendlies by reading Friday’s round-up.

As we mentioned in that article, official information has been hard to come by for a lot of these kickabouts, with many teams only producing brief match reports and video highlights at best.

We’ll round up what we know in the piece below.

We may have been provided with a huge clue as to who is first in line for spot-kick duties at Manchester United.

Bruno Fernandes (£8.6m) scored a penalty in one of the Red Devils’ two friendlies against West Bromwich Albion on Friday, with some media outlets also reporting that he missed another effort from 12 yards.

This may have been significant as Paul Pogba (£8.3m) and Marcus Rashford (£8.8m), who have taken a number of penalties for United before, were both involved in that kickabout with the Baggies.

Fernandes had scored from the spot in the Gameweek 27 win over Watford but both Pogba and Rashford were absent through injury.

A strong-looking attacking unit involving those three players, Anthony Martial (£8.0m) and Daniel James (£5.8m) fell to a 2-1 loss to Slaven Bilic’s side in the first friendly, with a team containing United’s first-choice defence 3-1 victors over the Championship club in the second game.

Liverpool didn’t have a friendly per se at the weekend but they did stage an intra-squad match.

This was particularly significant as journalist Dominic King reported that both Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) were involved, with those two players having not been risked for the previous warm-up game against Blackburn Rovers for precautionary reasons.

The Reds apparently have no other new fitness concerns to report:

Norwich City and Tottenham Hotspur met in a friendly on Friday in a game that was split into four quarters.

Erik Lamela (£5.7m) was on target for the Lilywhites, while Josip Drmic (£5.3m) and Mario Vrancic (£6.2m) – who scored a direct free-kick – replying for the Canaries.

Harry Kane (£10.8m), Son Heung-min (£9.7m), Steven Bergwijn (£7.4m) and Moussa Sissoko all featured on their returns from injury.

Jose Mourinho said afterwards:

Not against Norwich City, with Norwich City. A good training session, we needed minutes, we needed to know the feeling of playing here without our supporters and to have this session with another Premier League team is the best thing.

Of course, it was a different match. We were supposed to divide the team in two and play another match (against Reading on Saturday) but that was not possible, so I agreed with Daniel (Farke) to have this match of four periods.

Of course, when you get into the third and fourth periods, you start making lots of changes because in the end, what we work on tactically, we do at the training ground, and today was much more about competing, minutes, intensity.

It was very important to do it and to go into this last week without any injuries, because we all know in these first matches, even friendlies, there is always the risk of getting some injuries.”

As Mourinho alluded to there, Spurs’ match against Reading on Saturday was called off.

Danny Ings (£7.1m) is the most-sold player ahead of Gameweek 30+ but the striker was on the scoresheet in Southampton’s 3-2 win over Bristol City on Friday.

All five goals were scored in the first of three 45-minute intervals, with Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) grabbing a brace.

There was no Shane Long (£4.7m) at St Mary’s, with Michael Obafemi (£4.9m) partnering Ings up front and playing a big part in Armstrong’s early opener.

Nathan Redmond (£6.2m) made his return from injury, meanwhile.

Chelsea put seven goals past QPR on Sunday, with Mason Mount (£6.2m), Willian (£7.0m) and Olivier Giroud (£6.6m) among the scorers.

The returning Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.3m) and Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) scored braces, while N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) started for the Blues after a belated return to full-contact training.

Our very own moderator Rotation’s Alter Ego had a stab at cobbling together the Chelsea starting XI from training ground photos:

Reece James (£5.1m) returned from injury for Frank Lampard’s side, meanwhile.

Newcastle United beat Hull City 2-0 on Saturday, with Florian Lejeune (£4.4m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m) on target.

Jamaal Lascelles (£4.3m) was among those not involved, although only because he had just become a father again.

Following the decision not to allow any alterations to Premier League squads for the remainder of the season, the fit-again Paul Dummett (£4.3m) didn’t feature.

Steve Bryce said afterwards:

The good thing is that everyone’s come through it OK. I think that’s the vital importance. We have picked up one or two in the week – the two Longstaff brothers in particular – but they’ll hopefully be joining us on Monday or Tuesday.

How I've risen up the rankings in FPL over the last two months

Ismaila Sarr (£6.4m) was back among the goals as Watford beat Brentford 2-0, with Etienne Capoue (£4.8m) also on target.

Troy Deeney (£6.2m) was given a half-hour cameo off the bench.

A number of players were missing but the Hornets later reported that only Daryl Janmaat (£4.0m) and Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) would definitely miss out in Gameweek 30+.

Adam Masina (£4.3m), Craig Cathcart (£4.3m) and Roberto Pereyra (£5.6m) were all not risked because of minor issues, while Kiko Femenía (£4.2m) and Will Hughes (£5.3m) were taken off as a precaution.

Assistant manager Craig Shakespeare said:

Masina didn’t start as he took a slight knock in training yesterday. It’s precautionary. Same with Kiko (coming off) and Will Hughes (who came off), precautionary. We are expecting everyone to be training on Sunday if not Monday.

Jimenez starts but Traore benched as Santo reverts to a 3-5-2 for clash with Norwich

Morgan Gibbs-White (£4.7m) was Wolves’ goalscorer as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side drew 1-1 with Birmingham City.

Little else is known about the game but Adama Traore (£5.7m) looked sharp in training following his injury issues in the springtime.

Little is known about Sheffield United’s 2-0 defeat to Barnsley, either, although it was reportedly a second-string XI that took part.

West Ham defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Sebastien Haller (£6.8m) and Jeremy Ngakia (£4.0m), who is soon to be out of contract, were on the scoresheet for the Hammers.

Christian Benteke (£5.7m) scored Crystal Palace’s only goal.

Burnley drew 1-1 with Preston North End on Saturday, with Matej Vydra (£5.3m) grabbing the Clarets’ solitary strike.

With injury doubts over Chris Wood (£6.1m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.1m) ahead of Gameweek 30+, Vydra could well feature from the start against Manchester City.

Using FH for GW30+. Which team looks better?

    A)
    HENDERSON
    TAA DOHERTY Stevens Lundstram
    Sterling KDB Grealish
    Aguero Auba JIMENEZ (or Abraham?)

    B)
    Leno
    TAA O'CONNELL Stevens Lundstram
    Sterling KDB Grealish
    Aguero Auba VARDY

    So it's basically
    HENDERSON, DOHERTY, JIMENEZ
    vs
    LENO, O'CONNELL, VARDY

      What do we reckon boys?

      A) Sterling & Abraham
      B) Auba & Jimi

Auba obviously Arsenal’s talisman and captain but Sterling at home to Arsenal and Burnley is hard to ignore; already have Aguero and KDB.

    The Preview - GW30+

Hi everyone! It’s great to be back and I hope you all have been keeping well. Shared below is a comprehensive guide of all things you need to know before setting up your squad for GW30+:

(Data taken from FFScout with permission)

    1) For players to have accrued over 1400+ mins in the league this season, no player has registered big chances at a faster clip than Sergio Agüero - and that too by a substantial distance. Hence it comes across as no surprise that Agüero sits comfortably top for xGi (number of mins a player is expected to take to be involved in either a FPL goal/assist). Furthermore, Agüero has a goal involvement rate of ≈50% this season which is extremely impressive given the outrageous amount of goals City score. He is my DGW captain for now - given his numbers and explosiveness, I can’t look past him.

    2) No midfielder has recorded more big chances than Raheem Sterling this season. His poor conversion % coupled with the fact that only one of the eight big chances that he created for his teammates was converted makes him the most underperforming player in the league for goal involvement this season. Only Aguero has a better xGi than him in the league this season. Sterling’s conversion rate this season sits at ≈15% whereas his average league conversion rate under Pep is around ≈20% which further explains the regression.

    3) Since Aymeric Laporte has joined, City have kept a clean sheet ≈47% of the times in the league games he has played (vs 35% without him). This season, City have conceded 4 shots in the box and ≈1.2 big chances per game when he has played (vs ≈5.7 and ≈1.6 without him) - his impact is evident.

    4) Barring the exception of De Bruyne, no player has created big chances at a faster clip than Riyad Mahrez in the league this season. At just £8.5m, Mahrez is a bargain but the risk is obvious - Pep’s roulette. Having scoured through the City fan forums, I struggled to find a team without Sterling - almost all fans expect him to start. A vast majority of them expect Aguero to start too, with around 70% holding the same opinion about Mahrez. Mahrez could be a massive differential if he comes off given his price and the overall balance he brings to the team. However, personally I will go for the safer Agüero/De Bruyne/Sterling combo as I think City will score quite a few goals vs ARS/BUR and I’d hate to miss out on the fun!

    5) John McGinn's influence this season has been evident. Villa are averaging ≈2 big chances and ≈1.4 goals per game in the games he has played (vs ≈1.2 and ≈1 in his absence). His return and Villa's motivation to avoid relegation may mean that previous numbers count for little. I am not suggesting to invest in him as his minutes on his return from injury will be far from certain, but expect Villa to do better in attack when he’s on the park.

    6) No team in the history of the league (since OPTA records were kept) has conceded as many shots in the box over the first 29 GW's as Villa. Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic are the ones most likely to benefit having the best expected goal involvements and big chances per min of Chelsea players. Mount at £6.2m could be worth interesting but Pulisic has accumulated as many big chances as Mount in half as much minutes.

    7) I’m a sucker for DGW’s so despite the terrible Villa statistics I mentioned I was wondering if any of Villa’s defensive players may be worth considering. I think the goalkeeper should be good for saves, but according to murmurs in the local press Reina might be at slight risk from Nyland. The only defender I would remotely consider is Matt Targett, who I was pleasantly surprised to find had the best minutes per big chance created ratio of all defenders after Trent.

    8) “Would you have John Fleck over a Sheffield defender?” is a very commonly asked question.

No. Fleck, despite only being £5m, is 41st for shots in the box and 23rd for big chances for midfielders. In isolation I would prefer a Sheffield defender vs two blunt attacks for a clean sheet than Fleck for the same price any day. Which leads me on to the next question, “why triple up on a defence?”

Villa are fourth from bottom for big chances over the season and lie worst for big chances and xG over the past 10 GW's. Further, Newcastle have the fewest shots in the box and also the worst xG over the season.

    9) Now who do I think are the best Sheffield defenders to get? I did some statistical research and below were my findings:

    (best to worst statistically)

Goal threat: Egan, Stevens, OConnell, Baldock, Basham

Creativity: Stevens, OConnell, Baldock, Basham, Egan

Bonus: Basham, OConnell, Stevens, Egan, Baldock

Take your pick. I excluded Lundstram as his pros/cons are well known. A brace recently, an expectation among the Blades fans that he'll start, a possible contract extension and  the fact that he remains the only "defender" in the top five for both big chances and big chances created making him the most explosive defender this GW means that John Lundstram is in my team unless I hear any news pre deadline regarding his availability.

    10) Over the entire season, Raul Jimenèz is top in forwards for shots inside the box, big chances created and xGi. Jimenèz’s assist potential is often underrated but having gone through the numbers, I can safely say that relative to other forwards, Jimenèz’s chance creation numbers are elite. In GW 30+ he faces West Ham who are ranked 2nd for big chances and shots in the box conceded since Moyes has taken over. Primed for points!

    11) Is Pierre Emerick Aubameyang worth £11.1m even with a double? In the away games Arteta has managed so far, Aubameyang is not even in the top 10 forwards for shots in the box nor xG. City and even Brighton are ranked first and third for least big chances conceded at home over the past ten GW's. Having said that, the sample size under Arteta is small and Aubameyang has often defied the xG model in the past so I’m having a hard time deciding whether or not to include him in my squad.

    12) Lastly, I’d like to say that there are so many strategies at play that the decision on what chip to proceed with is entirely dependent on your own preference as it’s very team specific. I see why bench boost is popular, as it gives you the chance to go all out in a DGW with a handpicked 15. The Free Hit, meanwhile gives you flexibility on when to play the wildcard - particularly if your existing team is good to go for the upcoming GW’s. For those with triple captain left, I’d suggest you to roll the dice and dream big with the City options we have at our disposal this week.

It could also be that Pep likes someone to hold the width on the left hand side for whatever reason so Sterling was hugging the touchline a lot more while Sane has been out. That and he'd played a lot of minutes this season, could've just been a little burnt out.

His highest score came GW1 when Mahrez was playing rather than Bernardo.

Zinchenko actually played quite a few of the better games. Sterling may have been covering for the left back.

Nice write up! Kun is definitely a real conundrum... a Kunundrum if you will 🙂

I'd personaly still be a bit reluctant to captain him, rightly or wrongly - whilst he does have 24 big chances in 1,401 minutes, Jesus actually has more (25) in less minutes (1,337) yet isn’t being looked at - Kevin McGoldrick has 15 in about 1,350 -ish minutes so not sure that criteria would really influence me in isolation, or why 1,400 minutes should be the bar (other than Kun having played 1,401)

He’s also been becoming even more boom & bust as he gets older - making him a trickier FPL proposition:

This season for example the four (bou, BHA, avl, CPL) starts make up 62 of his 124 points (15.5 PPA in those four)

Whilst in his other 18 appearances - 12 starts/6 subs - he also got 62 points (5.2 PPA)

There just appears to be more & more games where he didn’t read the FPL script creeping in this year

It would have been hard to see the Kun of old getting just 10 FPL points from a full 270 minutes vs WOL, SOU, WHM for example

He still has to be a massive draw for the DGW though I agree - but captainers really need both Himself AND Pep to cooperate

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

And on point 2 (and similar to Kun!) - its great to roll out loads of stats & numbers - but its important to take a step back & look at the bigger picture too - i.e. before encouraging the masses to jump in with two feet on Raheem - I would exercise EXTREME caution given his two DGW fixtures are at home 😉

Which team do you think is stronger for bench boost for GW30+ only? Will wildcard after. Have 0.3 in value tied up in Jimenez so would lose that if I go for A, but am ok with that I think.

    A)

    Henderson, Leno

Mahrez, KDB, Grealish, El Ghazi, Saka
    Auba, Kun, Pukki

    B)

    Henderson, Reina
    TAA, Alonso, O'Connell, Lundstrum, Doherty
    Sterling, KdB, Grealish, McGinn, Mount
    Aguero, Jimi, Nketiah

Thinking Nketiah will get a lot of minutes the second game due to the quick turn around.

Haven't looked at the FFS template yet so fire away.

Nketiah is a risk.. But if you feel confident then fair play. Personally would go for more dgw players.. Alonso and Doherty could haul though.

I feel he is worth the punt since it's only a one off. That's my feeling on those 2, I'll want them anyway for the remainder most likely and other than city and sheff I'm not wanting a defender from the other 2 so may as well.

I am now debating if I should go Mahrez and Auba for Sterling and Jimi though. But feel as though Sterling will be more nailed (no idea why).

Better option for GW30+ only on FH?

    A) Leno, O'Connell, TAA, Martial & Jimenez
    B) Hendo, Stevens/Lundy, Doherty, Martial & Jimenez
    C) Hendo, O'Connell, TAA, Sarr & Rashford

Have Egan too. Gotta triple up on SHU def?

    Cheers! 🙂

Too long. It's been much too long.

FPL is back and with it comes the Scout Picks competition!

For those of you perhaps less familiar with this competition, or have pushed it out of your memory over this lengthy break, the Scout Picks competition revolves around pitting a Community Champion vs the Scout Picks squad (which will release later this week).

The Community Champion is randomly selected from a lottery each week, who must then submit an XI (including a captain) who fulfils the standard FPL rules including being in a playable formation and costs no more than 85m.

Whichever Gameweek champion beats the Scout’s team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and entry to Fantasy Football Scout's Mods and Cons league for next season.

Community Champion gwitbrock's winning margin of 23 points remains the target to beat, and what a time to do it with a nice juicy double gameweek!

If you're interested in applying, email Geoff (geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk) with your FFS username and FPL Team ID.

Due to the tricky timetables with Gameweeks, the lottery draw will take place fairly quickly, at midday tomorrow (Tuesday). The Champion will then have 24hrs (until midday Wednesday) to submit their team for the competition, so keep a close eye on your emails if you do enter!

    Good luck!

    Which combo (FH)?

    A) Leno, Baldock, Ozil, Samatta (3-4-3)
    B) Leno, Egan, Lundstram*, Pepe (4-4-2)
    C) Reina, Baldock, Egan, Pepe (4-4-2)

    Current draft:

    TAA Stevens
    Sterling KDB Grealish
    Aguero Auba

    Leaning towards B.

I would much prefer a sgw player than triple villa attack.

          Currently looking at Cantwell,Mount,Jota etc

Also doubt Saka plays both and McGinn out for 6mths so surely eased back

Think McGinn will play a part in the first and hopefully start the 2nd. Saka should get some time too, esp after Arteta said the 'youngsters ' will play.

            Cantwell is an option

Mount and Jota should do well

Hi all - deciding between FH or BB for GW30+ and have it boiled down to this:

    A) Pope, Targett, Doherty, Lascelles, Bruno, Cantwell

    or

    B) Sterling, Lundstram

    Has to be A right?

well im not sure if im happy with my current team thats the thing.

To me its a case of which scenario will maximize points, because FH seems only worth it if the team i currently have is better for GW 31 than the BB GW30 team, while i can also make GW 30 to be decent shape for 31 as well
