Pre-Season

The best budget FPL goalkeepers for 2020/21

It is slim pickings in the budget goalkeeper category of Fantasy Premier League this season.

Ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, 31 different shot-stoppers have been priced up at £4.5m or under, but in 2019/20, just two of these scored more than 60 FPL points.

Still, in a season where there is an ominous cluster of premium midfielders priced above £10.5m, as well as some pricey forwards, the £4.5m goalkeepers could be more important than ever.

At the time of writing, three goalkeepers priced £4.5m or below have double-digit ownership, so we’ve looked at the best ones and a few to avoid at first.

£4.0m Bench Fodder

There are just seven goalkeepers in the hallowed £4.0m bracket for the start of 2020/21 and, unfortunately, only a very small selection of them look likely to get minutes this season.

Just three of these shot-stoppers registered any minutes in the Premier League last season, namely David Martin (£4.0m), Ørjan Nyland (£4.0m) and Jed Steer (£4.0m).

It would take a particularly unfortunate injury crisis for West Ham to call on Martin’s services, especially after they re-signed Darren Randolph (£4.5m) in January.

The Republic of Ireland international is now the second-in-line to Lukas Fabianski (£5.0m) at the London Stadium, after Martin and Roberto (£4.5m) struggled to impress during their fleeting appearances during 2019/20.

By contrast, the right sort of injury crisis has already happened at Villa, potentially unlocking one of Nyland or Steer as viable £4.0m options. They certainly have the best chance of anyone else at this price point.

Tom Heaton‘s (£4.5m) long-term anterior cruciate ligament issue, sustained in January, and Pepe Reina’s return to AC Milan, and likely move to Valencia has left Villa’s goalkeeper pecking order wide open.

While the former Burnley man would be first-choice if fit, the latest rumours indicate he is still a little way off match fitness, even if the Birmingham Mail did report a return to training on August 17.

In the likely even that Heaton is not ready for the start of the new campaign, and no new goalkeepers arrive at Villa Park, Dean Smith will have to pick between Nyland and Steer for his initial first-choice. Something to watch out for in any pre-season friendlies.

While Nyland played more Premier League minutes than any other currently priced £4.0m goalkeeper in 2019/20 (537), and is currently in 17.3% of teams, he did not exactly impress during Project Restart.

Meanwhile, when Heaton was first injured, Steer was the man Smith turned to instead of Nyland after he helped Villa to an impressive run of wins and clean sheets en route to the Championship play-off final in 2018/19. The only reason Steer did not feature more often last season was because he himself got injured eight minutes into deputising for Heaton and missed the rest of the campaign. Mostly recovered from that knock now, Steer could be one to consider as bench fodder in the event he features in some pre-season outings.

Last season’s go-to £4.0m option David Button (£4.0m) remains a relatively popular choice at this bracket, although is currently owned by roughly half as many as Nyland.

The Brighton man remains unlikely to start on merit but, unlike many of the other £4.0m options, it would only take an injury to one goalkeeper for him to get in the team, in this case Mat Ryan (£4.5m).

Fantasy managers are unlikely to get anywhere with Kamil Miazek (£4.0m) at Leeds or Fulham’s Fabri (£4.0m), neither one featuring for their respective clubs at all in league games last season.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell (£4.0m) is one of many understudies to Nick Pope (£5.5m), perhaps one to watch if the England international leaves the club but, since releasing Joe Hart (£4.5m), Sean Dyche has brought in Will Norris and Marc Richter as further back-up options.

Potential set-and-forgets

Ryan has emerged as a front-runner in the £4.5m department, currerntly owned by 25.5% of managers at this current stage.

When sorting goalkeepers priced at £4.5m or under by total points from 2019/20, the Brighton man comes out on top, his score of 135 comfortably ahead of the second-placed Alex McCarthy (£4.5m).

Of these options, Ryan was top for clean sheets (nine), saves (117, compared to McCarthy’s 79) and bonus (14).

It is a mixed start to 2020/21 for the Seagulls but with save potential, there is perhaps little to be afraid of for the home matches against Chelsea and Manchester United while trips to Newcastle, Everton and Crystal Palace carry clean sheet potential too.

McCarthy is the only other £4.5m goalkeeper with more than 60 FPL points from last season and is potentially capable of outscoring Ryan in 2020/21.

Considering that Angus Gunn (£4.5m) was initially Southampton’s first-choice goalkeeper last season, McCarthy’s tally was accumulated in 28 appearances rather than Ryan.

As a result, the former Reading man averaged 3.7 points per game in 2019/20, slightly superior to the 3.5 points per game offered by Ryan.

Seven clean sheets for McCarthy worked out at 0.2 per game, the same as Ryan, while his minutes per save (31.1) was slightly worse than the Australian’s (29.2).

Like Brighton, Southampton have some of the better fixtures from a defensive perspective at the start of the season.

They face Crystal Palace, Burnley and Chelsea on the road while Spurs, West Brom and Everton are all set to come to St Mary’s between now and Gameweek 6.

We also include Heaton in this category because, if he is fit for the start of 2019/20, it is hard not to consider the Villa man in rotation with another budget option to cover the blank in Gameweek 1.

“Actually, (recovering from injury is) going really well if I’m honest. I know it’s, obviously, a difficult time, but for me, the timing of (the pandemic), sort of worked in my favour. I’d just finished the medical point of view, obviously you don’t stop getting the hands on treatment from the physios but it was just coming to a bit less at that point. I was moving into a strength phase, just as we got locked down. I’m pleased with my progress, it’s feeling good. No complaints at all. I’ve been able to maximise the time and with not a lot else to do, I’ve just been blasting the rehab. Getting down to do my gym work at 6.30 in the morning, couple of hours and I’m away.” – Tom Heaton, speaking in May 2020

Newly-Promoted £4.5m Options

As we referenced in our profile of the Leeds defence earlier this summer, there is still some uncertainty over who will hold down the number one jersey at Elland Road this season.

Kiko Casilla (£4.5m) played 36 times last season but missed the end of the campaign due to a racism ban.

Illan Meslier (£4.5m) filled his spot admirably and has since made his loan move from Lorient permanent. But until Casilla’s future at the club is confirmed, now that he has served his ban, it is hard to guarantee which goalkeeper will start for Leeds this season.

While West Bromwich Albion defensive assets have historically been useful to Fantasy managers, this latest squad may not be as reliable as those of yesteryear.

Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) is the nailed-on number one option at the Hawthorns but the Baggies only recorded 14 clean sheets en route to Championship promotion, eight short of Leeds United’s total and seven fewer than Sheffield United managed in 2018/19.

Johnstone hasn’t missed a single league game since joining the Baggies from Manchester United in July 2018.

A total of 111 saves made was 20 higher than Leeds’ two shot-stoppers managed combined but seven fewer than Fulham’s goalkeeping duo recorded.

Saves rather than clean sheets also look to be the most likely source of points for Marek Rodak (£4.5m) at Fulham.

The Cottagers did keep 17 clean sheets in the last season but, alarmingly conceded more goals on their own soil (26) than eight other Championship clubs in 2019/20.

Despite sharing a price point with Rodak, Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) played just 13 of a possible 46 league matches last season before Rodak took his spot.

Big-Six Back-Ups and Potential Starters

Emiliano Martínez (£4.5m) is the most likely of the £4.5m goalkeepers at a big-six club to start between the posts in Gameweek 1.

The former Reading loanee was particularly impressive when deputising for the injured Bernd Leno (£5.0m) during Project Restart, registering more saves than anyone else, with a total of 35.

That led to three clean sheets for Arsenal between Gameweeks 30+ and 38+, the same number as Liverpool, while both clubs also conceded 12 goals.

With plenty of encouraging signs in the Gunners’ defence ahead of 2020/21, there could be plenty of interest in Martínez if he can hold onto that starting berth. Thankfully, we will get to see a competitive Arsenal line-up in the Community Shield final later this month.

Adrián (£4.5m) remains the understudy to Alisson (£6.0m) at Liverpool so Fantasy managers will need the Brazilian to suffer another injury if a cheaper option is to open up in the Reds’ defence.

That said, the former West Ham man hardly lived up to his hype in 2019/20, scoring just 27 points across his 11 Premier League appearances last season, keeping just two clean sheets and averaging just 1.6 saves per game.

Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.5m) and Joe Hart (£4.5m) are the back-ups at Spurs and, with the latter only joining the club in the last week, bringing a wealth of experience, it is hard to know which of them would step up to the plate if Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) were to pick up an injury.

While still listed in the game, Claudio Bravo (£4.5m) is to be avoided, his red flag indicating the fact that his Manchester City contract has now expired.

Top-Half Understudies

There is very little to offer in this section of the goalkeeper pool this season.

Jonas Lössl (£4.5m) and Virgínia (£4.5m) are firmly behind Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) at Everton, while

Danny Ward (£4.5m) is unlikely to depose Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m) at Leicester any time soon.

The arrival of Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) at Sheffield United probably rules out Simon Moore (£4.5m) and Wes Foderingham (£4.5m) and Rui Patrício (£5.5m) retains a stronghold on the Wolves goalkeeper slot ahead of John Ruddy (£4.5m) and Matija Sarkic (£4.5m).

The same is also true of Randolph and Roberto at West Ham, while  Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) started just three games last season; Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) making 35 appearances for Crystal Palace.

Yep, initially it was GW2 due to Leeds Vs Fulham game but it takes away other options like Vinagre.

Just have to decide 2nd stage, whether to WC in GW3 or GW8-9

Yep, good luck. Their is always a doubt triggered in mind when I come here, especially when it comes to chip usage 😀

But then I look at previous BB scores and it hardly cross 10pts anyway, what a waste of chip!

Son to Bruno in GW2 and Aubameyang to Kevin in GW3 is what I'm planning to do, one from each is probably fine with those fixtures. GW8-9 feels like a decent fixture swing for triple Manchester plus getting rid of Wolves.

hmm, need to think about it more...I do like the thought of getting on a 4.0 keeper and a 4.0 defender straight away after GW1 though to free up as much cash as possible going forward into the next 37 GWs

It's Auba to Bruno GW3 for me. I did get Son as a placeholder, but he can stay if he proves himself; otherwise he goes in GW4 for the best Chelsea mid - Puli, Ziyerch or Havertz.

It's finally dawned on me that you can make a perfectly decent GW1 squad and roadmap for at least 4 weeks if you simply ignore City.
Their fixtures are not kind and although I'm not suggesting they'll struggle, I can't be sure which players will eat up the points.
So I'll go with triple Pool, triple United by GW3, Werner with the best Chelsea midfielder joining in GW4, and with no hits or chips wasted, it all looks cool. Might even ignore City until their fixtures change in GW10.

You're getting carried away a bit here Andy 😉

We're talking about City. They're an attacking machine !

I actually think it's so nice of PL to keep Wolves fixture in GW 2. Can wait until GW 3 to get KDB for Auba.

Leicester Leeds Arsenal WHU I can see some hauls for the Belgian guy there.

I'm not going to triple up on United as of now. Fixtures for United aren't that great. Martial Shaw would stay. Can swap Salah for Bruno for a plum home game to cover © but that's about it.

Triple Pool is a good idea yup

The way I see it, with United you can be sure Bruno, Greenwood and Martial will earn their corn. With City, will it be KDB, Sterling, Aguero, Mahrez, Foden? I'm really only interested in one, Kevin, but I can maintain a damn good squad without him. For sure if Bruno or Martial start off naff, I can adjust.
Due to GW2 my only Wolf is Vinagre, who benches for that fixture. I'm back to the Big 3 Reds in defence, with the risky no-Pool midfield scenario.

          Hmmm
I'm actually looking at Salah right now and thinking whether to move him on ....

Triple Pool Defense is certainly on my mind too. But if I want it, I'd do it from GW 1. Pool can keep a CS vs anyone.

But I'm much more comfortable about idea of swapping Salah Bruno than not having an option of Salah at all.

Think will continue with my current plan and reassess ....

Agree with you, City are very good of course but the fixtures aren't generous. KDB isn't 11.5 anymore too, his presence comes at quite the cost. I'm not bothered about ignoring them until GW10, and I'm a City fan! However, after I - hopefully - WC around that time I'll be looking to get triple City attack and capitalize on those phenomenal fixtures. Also if I see Aguero is near certain to get a start against a West Ham, Leeds or Leicester I'd be hard pressed not to bring them in.

However, I can't see the logic in triple United either. Their fixtures aren't great. After the Palace and Brighton games, the following games from GW4-8 are: Spurs (H), Newcastle (A), Chelsea (H), Arsenal (H), Everton (A). Not easy at all and I'll likely ignore them for these matches too aside from Martial in a few.

First para I'm 100% on board with that. But regarding United, don't look at the oppo teams, look at their defences only. Chelsea and Arsenal's are woeful. Spurs are reconstructing theirs and I'm not impressed with Everton. Of course, United's defence is dodgy too, which is why I have none of their defence.

Looking at their defenses I don't believe they'll be as easy as you suggest. Chelsea are improving, simply signing a new keeper will bring them points considering the utter failure Kepa was last season. Kante is likely to be back in the CDM role too and they're signing other defensive personnel. Arsenal have a pragmatic and capable manager in Arteta who has helped shore up the defense since he arrived. Spurs defense will be fantastic imo, second season Mourinho team and he has a DM who is a massive upgrade on Winks and Sissoko. Everton look poor but Ancelotti teams, when they take it easy they take it REALLY easy which I believe explains their performances after the restart and friendlies. Either way he's a defensively capable manager who I'm sure will set Everton up well and will be difficult to beat. None of the defenses are perfect, and one should always be wary of having a rose-tinted view of each team before the season starts, but neither are they appealing enough for me to consider more than 1 United asset during that run.

Well, maybe. i still think the defences at the 3 London clubs will need time to bed in. The only defences I really trust are Liverpool and Wolves, which is where all my 4 playing back 4 will come from. More so, I feel the 3 attacking United assets - Bruno, Greenie and Martial are, pound-for-pound good value for now - better than City's and more settled that those at Chelsea or Arsenal.

This is the conclusion I’ve come to and said yesterday can go without City until GW10. Of course it’s a risk but plenty of other options.

I’d advise against triple Liverpool defence though. I’ve tried it before and learnt the hard way, it blocks you from an easy transfer in of Salah/Mané if you need it.

Both have a decent chance but Mitchell probably has better chance since his competition is injured.

I'm a more recent user on here but I feel FFS should really be updating their website. I can't say I'm a fan of the way we have to go under each article and post our thoughts, filtering through countless RMTs as we do so. A separate discussion area alongside the "Community" "Members" etc areas could go a long way.

    1. Holmes
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

A separate RMT section was tested but rarely works, majority keeps on posting here and those who post in RMT section don't get much reply.

      1. Flair
        • 3 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

True, just annoying to see RMTs when I'd rather see quality discussion about teams. I don't particularly see the point in the many RMTs now either, everyone has their own opinion and it's difficult to see in preseason what will happen. Unless there's a glaring issue like Firmino most RMTs I won't bother with, because who am I to criticize a team without a few matches to back anything I say?

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Again, the number of RMT posts will increase tenfold when the masses return in the week before GW1. It does get tiresome scrolling through it all. I myself ignore the current ones as posters will change their drafts ten times a day, as I do.
Even worse are the "Choose A, B or C for me" posts. I don't like to post my transient team unless asked, myself. I would love a specific section for proper analysis and discussion; can't see it happening though.

Yeah, if it gets too annoying I doubt I'll be commenting here too often. I absolutely love the amount and quality of discussion I've seen here though, it has, I feel, improved my team tenfold. Especially discussing with you!

Agree on the changing drafts part, I've gone from a 4-4-2 I loved before fixtures were revealed (not doing that again) to then a 4-4-2 with triple Southampton, than a 5-3-2 I was delighted with, and now a 4-3-3 with triple premium strikers I'm even happier with! Lots of stuff can change in the next two to three weeks.

If you think it's woefully inefficient now, just wait until the season starts and you're trying to post during live matches. By the time you click 'post' on your well-reasoned, thoughtful missive, 3 pages have flown past with every post a one-word knee-jerk reaction!

Since you are going without TAA in the start - you can re-shuffle team a bit and being Greenwood instead of Maddison so you won’t have to take -4 in GW2 or 3.

It's a weird world we live in where we can get all 3 starting United strikers for a combined total of 25.5 million. I'm planning on doing similar and adding Rashford and Martial in a few weeks.

Vardy strikes me as a much better option than Werner

Seems to be a lot of love for players new to the prem

I don't see that much love for newbies other than Werner. He's the exception to my no-newbie rule. There's a little concern about Leicester's post-lockdown form and lack of strengthening.

Agree with that - doesn’t help their defence is in disarray

Vardy tho still scored 6 goals

Werner has a tricky gw 2 fixture that puts me off

Up against my triple Reds defence - yeh, I'll roll with GW2. It's a marathon not a sprint and all that.

Everton close to signing Allan from Napoli... quite the upgrade from Schneiderlin/Sigurðsson!

They're apparently in for Dalot too. I know they were poor during the restart but they were on the beach then. Watching them closely as their fixtures are pretty fantastic till GW10 and it seems like an unmissable opportunity. Not on any of them now but if Calvert-Lewindowski makes a return I'd be hard pressed not to bring him in.

      Allan, Bernard, Gordon...

Sounds like a midfield of Grandads. 😆

    (A) Werner & son?

    Or

    (B) Kane Ziyech?

    Same combined value!

Werner and Ziyech, spend the $ elsewhere imo.

First RMT for the new season:

    McCarthy Nyland
    TAA Tierney Davies Vinagre Ferguson
    Salah Auba ASM Soucek Stephens
    Kane Werner Mitrovic

    Soucek and Vinagre in rotation.

    Thoughts?

    Morning all,

Anyone have any idea what the situation is with pulisic?

I would rather have puli that ziy as I thibk chelsea are likely to be liverpool of 3 or 4 years ago being all attack scoring goals......but also letting in huge numbers too.

All in all it hopefully means good returns for the attackers and puli looked amazing after lockdown

Mitrovic 343 or Doherty 442 ? I have Mitrovic currently, as most others here... But could Doherty actually do better during the first 4 gameweeks as well as during the whole season?

Willian a good alternative to Auba to free up cash? £4m cheaper.
