Newcastle v Arsenal team news: Martinelli benched as White and Wilson start

Double Gameweek 37 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continues at St James’ Park this evening, with Newcastle United hosting Arsenal at 20:00 BST.

The Gunners go into their penultimate match knowing that two victories will guarantee them Champions League football next season. After Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Burnley on Sunday, they currently lie in fifth place, two points behind their north London rivals.

Mikel Arteta makes three changes for the visitors.

Ben White has recovered from injury and replaces the suspended Rob Holding, while Nuno Tavares and Emile Smith Rowe also come in for Cedric Soares and Gabriel Martinelli.

Callum Wilson, meanwhile, makes his first start for Newcastle since December. That’s one of two changes for Eddie Howe, with Fabian Schar also back in the XI.

Kieran Trippier is a substitute, but Chris Wood is absent with a hip injury.

GAMEWEEK 37 LINE-UPS

Newcastle United XI: Dubravka, Krafth, Schar, Burn, Targett, Guimaraes, Longstaff, Joelinton, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

Subs: Dummett, Lascelles, Ritchie, Trippier, Fernandez, Fraser, Murphy, Darlow, Gayle

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tavares, Elneny, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard, Smith Rowe, Nketiah

Arsenal showed they have no standards when they rewarded that idiot a new contract for doing nothing. 3 years of doing the absolute bare minimum and can’t even finish top 4 playing once a week.

Serves him right in a way for kicking Aubameyang out, when Auba was the only reason Arteta didn’t get sacked last season (Carrying us to the FA Cup win 2 years ago).

Arsenal’s squad is better than Spurs if you take out Kane and Son. He had 2 and a half years to build a squad, spent loads of money. Emery wasn’t given this much time either and he did arguably a better job.

Tomiyasu, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey, Saka, Odegaard and maybe the goalkeeper.

              Definitely Ramsdale.

Tierney maybe. Saka and Odergaard if they toughen up. They need an Odergaard more than a Saka.

Saka or martinelli may get ahead of Kulu in spurs team and ramsdale could possibly challenge Loris but otherwise nobody

Ramsdale is a great signing. Odergaard signed. Smith Rowe, Saka, Martinelli learning their trade. Way more upside to Arteta's time there than downside.

And given time, many other managers could have done a similar job. Sorry but it’s been 2 and a half seasons and I just don’t see the improvement. A different approach and slightly better/younger squad, yes. But we’re not better on the pitch and the results unfortunately back that up.

Moronic comment tbh. Arsenal aren't at the level they used to be and things need time.

Arsenal had a goal for this season which Arteta comfortably met. They made some good signings & it's the best they've been as a squad in seasons. Truth be told it's injuries at the back & midfield that have cost them UCL.

We're always moaning about not giving managers time & something you've gotta respect on this occasion is the Arsenal board for actually doing that & giving them a chance.

They're a young team with not that much top experience to drag them over the line, and a good future. Overall IMO he's done a fine job.

Moronic comment? Where? They didn’t achieve that goal, Arteta said himself that the goal was to play CL next season. It’s been 2 and a half years and we’re at the same point we were 3 years ago, just with a slightly better/younger squad.

The league won’t stand still for us. Man United, Spurs and Chelsea will all get better. I said my comment because this was the best chance of CL we will have in years, playing once a week and they still couldn’t do it.

What? Man United are in turmoil on the pitch and it's a 3-year project. Spurs are a 2-man band with a manager 6 months into an 18 month contract who doesn't know if he's coming or going. And nobody knows what the heck is going to happen at Chelsea, meanwhile Arsenal have a young squad that is only going to get better.

You don't know what side your bread is buttered on.

I think they are just a bit raw from the result tonight (surely anyway) - otherwise need to check his own expectations for the team.

Arsenal look like they have a good longer term & that should be good to look forward to for any supporter.

Conte will make that Spurs team challenge for the title if they give him what he wants. Man United have a stronger squad than us and will strengthen. I think you’re a bit blinded by the PRocess by Arteta. As I say, the league won’t stand still for us and our ‘young team’.

              Klopp's first 3 league finishes, 8th, 4th and 4th.

What you forget to say is. Europa league final, CL and then CL and CL final. That was Klopps first 3 seasons. Why on earth would you compare Arteta with Klopp? Klopp improved Liverpool drastically and didn’t try to disguise it and buy himself time by calling it a ‘youth project’.

The long term goal is to get back into UCL and compete for trophies again. The short term goal was to get Europa League.

Even if you played UCL this season you'd likely have gone out early anyway. At least Europa gives the squad some good experience regardless & you can definitely go far in that competition.

You guys have a thin squad (evidenced by injuries today...) & you have exceeded expectations under Arteta this season. 6th and upwards was a good/expected result for you.

He's done well to get them to top 5. Squad is still too young. Aubameyang wasn't interested after he signed his contract. They started playing better without him. What coach could they have got that would guarantee them top 4 this season?

He's done a good job, not a great job. He identified the divas and problems like Oezil and Aubameyang and he built a good culture in which young players can and will succeed.

Sunday it's Everton and you would do well to take a look at what happens when a club really has no plan in the transfer market, no manager backing and no distinct style of play.

Be careful what you wish for.

Son to Kane in GW30, 5 captaincy blanks in a row (3 of which had DGWs), FH out Salah’s haul against United, brought in KDB and Son this week, crashing from 17k to 200k in 8 week’s time, 9 points from 8 + (C) this week and Ait Nouri 11 pointer first on the bench…smiling through the pain.

Shocking responses here regarding Arsenal. You finally have some good young talent and you're whining about Champions League slots? Get real!
Just be happy you're even in the conversation after being out in the cold for so long, your future is brighter than it's been in ages.

No, you're not as good as Spurs...yet. Their two best players (Kane and Son) are miles better than any current Gunner and that's something you should strive to change with some key summer signings.

Arsneal should keep in mind that Conte doesn't stick round long, and both Son/Kane are hitting their 30s.

Arsenal's squad has more time to hit their peak & this arguably is Tottenham's unless they truly manage to get good Son/Kane replacements soon (super tough job, both world class).

Other teams to worry about than just Spurs but from an outside perspective Arsneal have looked far more promising this season than so many recently.

Sounds like he's trying to leave again.

Embargoed quotes from Klopp on Virgil & Salah.

"They are both OK. So, the target would be for both that they can be involved again on the weekend. Properly involved, bench or whatever and a few minutes or start, I don’t know, we will see that, because that would then be perfect for the game [Champions League final].

“But if not then we take each day afterwards. But we are very positive, or [have] no doubt about the final. I’m pretty realistic about the Wolves game, but tomorrow rather not.”

Hmm, doesn't sound great for a Salah start in GW38

Surely we have to go for it. ManC could easily draw against Aston V. Rest Salah when we got some goals

          Salah on the bench.

Brought on if a goal is needed & City result depending...

Holding my 1FT until the last hour, but if Salah out then it feels like a (-4) double transfer would make best use of the freed up funds.

Assume high risk of rotation for teams playing Thursday as only 3 days cap?

likely to be chasing 30ish points to win ML, rank no issue.

Suspect he will do Salah to Son

    a) Salah > Son for free, Play Nketiah, captain a player he doesnt have
    b) Salah + Watkins > Kane + mid to £8m for -4, captian Kane

      A

But I'd probably go a different mid and captain whoever that is (KDB? Sterling? Mané?)

already have triple City (he has none) and no Spurs

Mane a good shout actually - annoyingly 0.1 off Diaz/Kane

        thanks

Yeah just avoid the hit at this point. If Kane does well Son is likely involved anyway. Better to either go plan A or to go full differential

If he doesn’t have Kane then go for him and captain and hope for the best.

Wish they’d do ‘deals’ on fpl, next season.

Like, if you buy Kane at 12m you get Son for half price kind of thing

Dunno - for instance I like KdB but I find him expensive.
But maybe you can get a deal by buying Jesus and you get 25% off KdB otherwise full price

Mahrez and Richarlison to Kane and KdH? (If Salah is ok)

    Schmeichel
    Matip TAA Alonso Cancelo Laporte
    Son Salah Saka
    Nketiah Kane

    Bench: Gordon, KdH, Pukki, Foster.

I'm playing Richarlison over Nketiah. Arsenal defence is a shambles.

Depends who you are captaining. If you already have Son then just captain him.

I think that Nketiah one pointer was deserved tonight, owners can count their blessings for the points they have got off a sub £6m forward and just be grateful.
