Scout Report – Paulinho

Andre Villas-Boas made his first foray into the summer transfer market late last week by recruiting midfielder Paulinho from Brazilian club Corinthians. A long-term target of the north London side, the 24-year-old arrives for a reported fee of £17m, with Spurs allegedly beating off the likes of Real Madrid and Inter Milan in the race for his signature:

After finally sealing the switch to White Hart Lane, Paulinho spoke of his relief during an interview with the club’s official website on Saturday afternoon:

“First, I want to thank Tottenham for believing in me. I am very happy and excited to have joined Spurs. It’s a huge pleasure for my career to be at a club as big as Tottenham. I know it will be a huge challenge but I think I can help all my colleagues to succeed and give a lot of happiness to the supporters.”

The History

A product of the Pão de Açúcar youth academy in his native Brazil, Paulinho’s failure to establish himself as a first-team pick resulted in a move to Latvian outfit FC Vilnius back in 2006. Having notched five times in 38 appearances over a couple of seasons, he was snapped up by Polish club LKS Lodz but returned to his homeland after a season of controversy – mainly fielded as a right-back, he was often subjected to racist abuse and re-joined his first club in 2008.

Back at Pão de Açúcar, Paulinho racked up eight goals in 39 appearances but once again failed to convince the club of his worth and was sold to Brazilian second division side Bragantino after a single season. Six strikes in 28 matches persuaded Corinthians to splash the cash in 2010 and afforded the midfielder a chance to finally settle; while four goals and an assist in 27 games hints at a tentative opening year, he followed that up with 16 goals and 12 assists in 59 matches before Villas-Boas made his move.

On the international stage, Paulinho has notched five times in 17 matches for Brazil and with two goals in four appearances in the recent Confederations Cup tournament, he was named third best player in the competition behind Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

The Prospects

Although he’s been billed as “a box-to-box” midfielder, Paulinho will bring more than mere industry to the Tottenham engine room. His driving runs from deep and ball-winning abilities in the centre of the park are allied with plenty creative endeavour and with a keen eye for goal; his addition to a central midfield that already possesses Sandro and Mousa Dembele looks a significant move from Villas-Boas.

Having utilised a 4-2-3-1 for most of last season, Spurs may now be primed for a switch to Villas-Boas’ preferred 4-3-3 formation next time round – a scenario that may well have implications from a Fantasy perspective. While a role in “the hole” allowed Gareth Bale to excel in a central spot in 2012/13, the Welshman would surely be forced back onto the flank in such a system, with the Spurs boss relying on the dynamism of Paulinho, Sandro and Dembele to break up opponents’ attacks and hit quickly on the counter.

With the likes of Tom Huddlestone and Scott Parker linked with moves away, it’s clear Villas-Boas plans to bolster his first-team options – it may well transpire that 4-3-3 becomes the default, then, with a switch to 4-2-3-1 more a “Plan B” when a tactical rethink is required mid-match. Certainly, having been acquired for a club-record fee, Paulinho looks key to Villas-Boas’ approach next time out – his attacking sensibilities make the new man one to watch if he’s fielded as the most advanced of the middle three but it’s his possible impact on Bale’s starting position (and subsequent Fantasy points potential) that may well be the most crucial aspect of his acquisition.

Intriguingly, Paulinho’s ever-improving eye for goal has recently led former Argentina legend Juan Roman Riquelme to suggest he’s more than similar to a certain Frank Lampard. The Spurs new boy went on to admit:

“This comparison is a responsibility I will take, I will not run away from it. Lampard is a great player not only for Chelsea but world football. I intend to follow in his footsteps as he is a very professional guy. David Luiz always speaks of him on international duty. I’ve always looked at what Lampard does and, to me, he is a phenomenon – the way he hits the ball, what positions he takes up. He really is incredible.”

Expected to come in around the mid-price mark in Fantasy games – a cost of 7.5 seems likely – Paulinho’s progress will be keenly watched over Tottenham’s pre-season schedule. With Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull rolling up to the Lane by Gameweek 9, in addition to trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa, Spurs have the platform to hit the ground running as Villas-Boas looks to improve upon last season’s fifth place finish. While Bale will no doubt garner the pre-season attention, the new boy also has the class to prove a canny acquisition for Spurs and Fantasy managers alike.

Re Aspas for anyone considering him

I did some research on Aspas after reading this post which hinted at almost Michu potential due to his performances in Spain. http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/05/pre-season-section-now-live/?hc_page=4&hc_refresh=229#hc_comment_5016479

What I cam back with is of his 12 goals he scored 3 penalties last season. With this in mind I would be more concerned that he had a shot conversion ratio less than Cazorla's even if he had a high percentage of shots on target. If you take the three penalties off him (as he won't get them at pool) he actually only scored 1 goals every 309 minutes of football which is quite poor imo.

Obviously a mitigating factor in this could be the fact he was playing for one of the lesser clubs but at this moment in time I won't be going near him with these kind of paltry returns.

Yep, his goals tally is far from impressive but when you add the fact that he had 7 assists in addition to his 12 goals in 34 appearances in a relegation-threatened team, its not so bad. So don't ignore him just yet, even though his style of play is much more like a midfielder than a striker (unfortunately, he's going to be classified as a forward)

Just to add 1 more thing, i can see him being a lot like Mirallas last season, playing on the wing and unfortunately being ignored because he was a forward. I really hope he comes in at a cheap price though, and who knows, if Suarez leaves, and Gerrard isn't playing, he might just be the one to take a penalty

Good article on him there. Seems in line with what you've said about his shot conversion ration being poor. If he improves that, and comes in at a decent price, then he could do well. At the moment, he's below the likes of Suarez, Sturridge and Coutinho in my thinking still.

        Cheers Demi interesting read.

It's interesting that his already poor shot conversion drops to 9.1% when you take away the three shots he had for penalties and this was while playing as a striker mostly. If he moves to the wing I don't see much more than downing-esque returns for him and I definitely won't be taking up a striker spot with him.

My mini league which I ran at work had 19 all in all at £10 entry fee this season it should be 20-30 entrants after seeing how smoothly it was managed .
Different FF idea altogether by just picking football clubs over the various league division with a pot of money to spend on those 12 clubs which in turn had their own values based on the previous seasons performance .
Even though I won the £100 first prize they all liked the idea .... which didn't involve a great deal of effort because there were NO changes after the 12 clubs had been chosen .
Hoping this season I have back to back wins 😉

I created my first ML eight season's ago. It was an office based league consisting of 20 players, with a reasonable entry fee. I had to turn people away because they approached me after the season had started.

A couple of seasons later I found myself having to actively recruit people to maintain the league numbers.

By the following season, recession had decimated my office and it became impossible to maintain the league as being exclusive to office employees. So I made it an 'Invitational' and recruited friends from outside work.

Further loss of regulars followed and the league was reduced to 17 members the following season.

2013/2014 season will see me as the only actual employee in what started out as my office league. The Monday morning trash talking and transfer comparisons died with the celtic tiger. The 'Weekend Wanker' (The award given to the dumbest transfer of the week) was retired in 2011. Requests have already been received for a reduction in the entry fee for the coming season.

Every year it becomes harder and harder to administer the league( Recruiting players and then collecting entry fees)
I find it interesting how the state of my FPL ML mirrors the state of the economy over the last decade.
Every year I declare that 'this is the last year' and then come game release, I find myself renewing the league once again.

Do other league administers share the same difficulties? or do I just need to run a better league?

( There is no point to this post, I'm just killing 10 minutes)

That seems way way too high imo! Especially if prizes are given away depending only on final rank instead of including "Manager of the Month" competitions and so on.

I'm part of a work league with £10 entry and had over 40 people last time round!

I've given up on trying to get any money out of people for the league that I run. It started out as £10 per person for the season but only 6/20 paid so the prize money wasn't great.
The second season I said I would kick out anyone who had not paid up by Christmas, only the top 3 teams paid and I didn't follow through on my threat. Last year I put entry down to £5 and come the end of the season there was still only my £5 in the pot - I did spend my winnings on a bottle of bulmers 17 though!
This year it will be free.

Also run a €30 league, and generally get around 30-35 entrants.

Give prizes to the top 5 usually, €30 for manager of month, and run a Champions League type cup at christmas with €70 for winner and €30 for runner up.

Its about the 6th or 7th year I've run it, but in that time I've gone from college to work, and now on my third job so find while I lose a few every year due to guys leaving work, losing contact and emmigrating, I always get the same number in new entrants from new jobs, friends of friends etc.

The cup keeps people interested I found, and stroking people's ego's often gets them to commit ("oh you'd have come at least third last season, and won the season before, you must be good")

I am in two leagues that are 50 euro each to enter and one for 20 euro. I used to be in one for 120 euro during the celtic tiger era too but that went from 120 to 100 to 50 to not being run at all last year.

The standard is always quite high in the leagues so I don't think same guy has ever won twice and the league admins usually give the entrance money as a monthly prize each month with the balance split between the top 3/4/5/6 depending on how many participants.

Jovetic and Ljajic look to be on the way out. Fiorentina had such a good attack last season and now these classy players are being replaced by that donkey Gomez.

          Donkey!?

Who cares about class, he knows how to score goals.

Just like Dzeko, just like Mertersacker knows how to defend. Just because he's a bit gangly you can't criticise his talent. o.O

I know he scores goals, he's so static that watching him play is a bore. Fiorentina's attack was far more stylish last season, maybe my point wasn't clear.

Jovetic has been free to leave for a while now, it's just nobody seems to be bidding for him. Juventus are his preferred destination but having already signed Llorente and Tevez, it remains uncertain if they will spend more on another striker.

Fiorentina and Juventus have had an awful relationship for a long time, they are only willing to sell Jovetic to Juve if they stump up 30m euro up front. Other clubs may be able to negotiate a better deal.

You'd be paying largely for his reputation. Barcelona's reputation. His reputation. The fact that there will be clubs willing to pay £10m probably does make him worth it. But I wouldn't pay it personally. Not for his playing ability.

I think we'll pay less than £10m or he'll go to Atletico. I'm still not sure on the one hand he's old, had a major injury, no resale value and high wages. On the other hand - he's got the potential to work well with Bale, fill in 2 positions and offers experience of winning things that we don't have in our squad. Plus it'd be David frickin Villa in a Spurs shirt.

I guess time will tell whether it happens, and if it does whether it works out. I'm glad I can watch it from the sidelines without much emotional investment because it looks like a make or break gamble from where I'm sitting.

The degree to which it's a gamble also depends on whether we go and sign another striker (we need to) if Villa is experience and expected to play 35 games - some on the wing and some up front - then it's much less of a gamble than expecting him to play 50 games as the main man.

Well don't be so pessimistic about Villa's chances of doing well, he's been playing as a left winger for Barcelona and in the very few games he plays as the striker, he looks sharp, capable of getting 15+ goals in a league season. And thats not to mention that he's been playing with Messi so he knows how to make sacrifices, which could work well with Bale. Also keep in mind that Villa scored 16 and assisted 6 in 40 appearances for Barca last season and he was subbed out around the 60 minute mark quite often because the serious injury he had just recovered from at the beginning of the season.

So ya, if he plays as a striker, expect great link-up between him and Bale (assuming he signs for Spurs of course) and great runs that only create chances for himself, but also his teammates. I can't say i'm sure he'll score 15+ goals, but hell, if he comes in at under 9, he'd be on my radar. Oh and just to help make my point, one of the very few games he played a striker when Messi was also playing, was the home game against Milan in the champions league, and look at the space he created for Messi and Iniesta, and he also scored a goal that game. Hope this helps

It's very peculiar that a 30 million bid for a player with a massive disciplinary problems is mocked so readily by a large quantity of people, especially when all bids from other clubs seem to be non-existent at the moment. One would have to expect this is due to his discipline problem.

Additionally while Giroud didn't have an amazing start to his Premier League life he managed to get 17 goal and 11 assists in all competitions which isn't truly terrible for a first season

Giroud 47 games 17 goals and 11 assists first season
Suraez 13 games 4 goals and 3 assists first season

Napoli have been cut to 2/5 from 4/6 @BetVictor to sign Leandro Damiao with reports that a deal is close.

Anyone else think that Napoli are making some very good enquiries this season with Benitez? Apparently: Rafael (GK), Astori, Ogbonna, Callejon, Lamela, Dzeko/Damiao/Jovetic,

Of course it remains to be seen who they ACTUALLY sign but it is looking promising.

There are less big value players every week to spend your tokens on though. Still lots of good value you out there but significantly less. Time is running out for the teams that haven't spent enough.

Not good enough for a CL team like Man City but could do well at a mid-table club. Has good battling/defending attributes but his distribution is iffy at best.

Sorry for not having rules/how it works up yet. But, there will be a league running from GW1 to 10. Then after that the top two in the league are automatically into the Semis. 3rd place to 6th place will have "playoffs" to get into the semis (kinda like having just two Quater finals. "playoff" scores will be taken from GW11 + 12 scores (from fpl that is!). The winners will play 1st and 2nd from the league in the semis. (Semi scores taken from GW 13 + 14) The two winners then have a final. (Final scores come JUST from GW 15) (As your can see it will only run to GW 15 🙂 )
