Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 2

With just a single match remaining of Gameweek 1, our attentions have already turned to next weekend and beyond as our regular look at the fixture list is rolled out once again. Assessing the strength of schedule over the next four-to-six Gameweeks, the omens look good for in-form City and Southampton, though United and Chelsea owners may be a little concerned by their fixtures looming.

The Strong

Southampton

A 1-0 win at West Brom saw the Saints mirror the resilience displayed towards the end of the previous campaign. Mauricio Pochettino’s side ended 2012/13 with just nine goals conceded in the final 10 fixtures and with an enticing schedule ahead, there’s plenty cause for optimism amongst Fantasy managers. Artur Boruc looks secure between the sticks, while Luke Shaw has earned himself an early bandwagon after a 12 point Fantasy Premier League (FPL) return at the Hawthorns – home games against Sunderland, West Ham, Palace and Swansea, in addition to a trip to Norwich, bolster their chances of further defensive returns. Providing he’s passed fit, Nathaniel Clyne looks an under the radar option at right-back.

Further up the field, Rickie Lambert is likely to retain his role as the lone forward as Pochettino looks to accommodate new boy Pablo Osvaldo into his frontline. Lambert’s spot-kick duties and share of set-pieces make him an appealing option for our three-man frontlines over that upcoming run, while skipper Adam Lallana looks a viable mid-price midfield alternative.

Man City

Monday night’s hammering of Newcastle served notice of City’s renewed swagger under Manuel Pellegrini. While the Chilean was keen to reiterate his intentions to utilise the strength of the City squad, the likes of David Silva, Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero are already on Fantasy radars ahead of games against Cardiff, Hull and Stoke. Vincent Kompany’s groin complaint looks set to cement Joleon Lescott’s place at the back, and with Matija Nastasic resuming training this week, clean sheet returns look on the cards – Pablo Zabaleta’s right flank raids could bring in further points, with Micah Richards’ hamstring injury clearing any uncertainty over possible rotation for the Argentine.

Tottenham

A narrow win over Palace last Sunday allowed Roberto Soldado to open his account with a coolly-taken spot-kick. The Spaniard now prepares for four enticing matches in the next six which could earn him Fantasy points aplenty – home games against Swansea, Norwich and West Ham, with a trip to Cardiff also thrown in, more than atone for testing showdowns with Arsenal and Chelsea. Fantasy managers eagerly await a conclusion to the Gareth Bale saga – the Welshman would be an obvious armband contender but his possible departure to Madrid may bring the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson into the equation, though Andre Villas-Boas will surely reinvest if his star man does leg it to La Liga.

At the back, Jan Vertonghen’s class has already collected him a couple of bonus points in the new system on top of the Palace clean sheet. Michael Dawson mid-price appeal could earn him new suitors – he seems to be ahead of Younes Kaboul in the central defensive pecking order as the latter builds up his fitness.

Liverpool

A look at the fixture ticker sees Brendan Rodgers’ side rated as fourth most favourable over the next six Gameweeks. While trips to Villa and Swansea are perhaps debatable in terms of clean sheets, the chance of attacking returns for Philippe Coutinho, Iago Aspas and Daniel Sturridge look decent as the Reds attempt to build on their opening day win over Stoke. Home games against Southampton and Palace and a trip to Sunderland offer points potential at both ends of the pitch, with Kolo Toure and Simon Mignolet owners remaining confident.

Also Consider

Newcastle – on paper at least, the Magpies have the most appealing four-match run of any side. Home games against West Ham, Fulham and Hull, in addition to a trip to Villa, look ideal as they attempt to bounce back from Monday’s mauling at City. Form-wise, though, Alan Pardew’s side offered little to convince would-be suitors – with Steven Taylor suspended for the next two league games and Davide Santon a doubt, their backline already looks under strength, while the potential loss of playmaker Yohan Cabaye hardly helps morale. Further up the field, Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse are nailed-on but drafting either in looks no more than a punt at the moment.

Hull – Steve Bruce will be targeting a run of four home games in the next six as a viable source of points for the Tigers. Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham and Villa all roll up to the KC Stadium between now and Gameweek 7 and with a trip to Newcastle also in their short-term agenda, the omens look good for the promoted club. A recent change of formation to 4-3-3 is worth keeping an eye on here. Budget option James Chester looks a decent shout at the back in light of that schedule, while Roberto Koren looks the safest option in midfield – Ahmed Elmohamady has been shifted to right-back, while Robbie Brady started in the midfield three against Chelsea.

Norwich – unconvincing in their home draw against Everton, Chris Hughton’s side have a trip to Hull and two strong home games against Southampton and Villa in the next four. Seb Bassong played 90 minutes for the reserves on Monday – his potential return looks crucial as the Canaries look to replicate the form that harvested eight clean sheets at Carrow Road last time out. Robert Snodgrass is looking to recover from a groin problem; his creativity will bolster the appeal of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel up top.

The Weak

Man United

David Moyes’ side made light work of a perceived difficult trip to Swansea last Saturday evening but United’s upcoming schedule remains undoubtedly tricky. A home clash with Chelsea this weekend precedes trips to Liverpool and City – while you wouldn’t back against Robin Van Persie under virtually any circumstance, those fixtures are enough to deter any Fantasy managers from snapping up the champions’ assets. A Gameweek 4 home clash with Palace looks the one bright spot before the schedule clears considerably a fortnight later.

Chelsea

Jose Mourinho’s side brace themselves for a schedule which sees them play just once at Stamford Bridge in the next six Gameweeks. Trips to United, Everton and Spurs in the following five, in addition to a blank Gameweek 3, hands those who loaded up on Chelsea assets for the double a real dilemma. Romelu Lukaku owners are already jumping ship after he was benched for the home game against Hull, while Mourinho’s teamsheet against Villa may give an indication as to the extent of rotation we can come to expect over the season ahead.

West Brom

Having opened their campaign with a narrow home defeat to Southampton, the Baggies chances of bouncing back are undermined by a tricky run of matches. Steve Clarke’s side square up to three of last season’s top six (eve, mun ARS) in the next six Gameweeks and with a showdown against Swansea and trip to Fulham also thrown into the mix, there’s no real cause for optimism at either end of the pitch. Nicolas Anelka’s subdued opening display may already be giving his owners second thoughts, while investment in the West Brom backline looks a route best avoided.

Be Wary Of…

Aston Villa – Paul Lambert’s side welcome Liverpool and City to Villa Park in the next five, while a blank Gameweek 3 and visit to Norwich also await the midlands outfit. Though those who loaded up on Villa assets for the double may be scouring the market for alternatives, though Villa’s display at the Emirates has already suggested they may cause a few upsets along the way this term. Certainly, Christian Benteke owners will have little fear of fixture difficulty on the back of his double against Arsenal.

Sunderland – Paolo Di Canio’s side will feel hard done by after dominating against Fulham yet falling to defeat. The Black Cats don’t have time to feel sorry for themselves, though, as they ready themselves for the visit of Arsenal, Liverpool and United in the next six Gameweeks. With trips to Southampton and West Brom also to consider, few will fancy the Wearsiders as an option right now.

Stoke – the weekend home game against Palace is the one bright spot over the next four Gameweeks for Mark Hughes’ troops. Trips to West Ham and Arsenal, with a home showdown against City sandwiched in between, suggest Asmir Begovic will once again have his work cut out to deliver the Fantasy returns – the Bosnian’s heroics earned five points at Anfield last time out despite the narrow 1-0 loss.

Swansea – as the Swans lick their wounds after the opening day home mauling by United, their schedule remains unappetising. Michael Laudrup’s men face Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the next six and also have a trip to Southampton on their agenda – with Europa League duties also factored in, rest and rotation looks a potential problem. Laudrup started with Wilfried Bony on the bench against United and while the Ivorian climbed off to notch a consolation, there’s a fear his manager’s teamsheet could be a sign of things to come.

    Defenders BPS Stats:

One last time, For those of you who didn't see this earlier:
I created two stats tables in the members area, that shows the key factors positively/negatively influencing defenders scores in the new BPS.

The positive table only considers those with >30 passes and more than 70% pass completion. Negative table only considers those with at least 1 conceded foul.

Positive Table (probably much more useful):
    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/3399/
    Negative Table:

Yes but I can't select it for a column in the table. It's not provided since the data comes from opta and FPL calculates the value internally I suppose.

In which case another upvote will be forthcoming. The defender BPS could be a big key to the FPL season this time round and fantasy template could be ripped apart by this potential drift in points.

Hard to say. I have hazard but Oscar looks great whenever I see him play and appears to be tucked behind a central striker.

A lot of competition for his role though so I think Hazard may be better over the season (stats indicate he will return soon).

We'll no more tomorrow when we see where Mata plays. Hold off any transfer until tomorrow at least.

From what Mourinho has said he wants to play a left footed player Right wing (Mata) that only leaves Oscar for the central role if you ask me! Unless lamps plays there.

Hard to drop a player like hazard too though

There's no rush to shoehorn RVP into your team, you can make all of those transfers up until GW4 (when United have more favourable fixtures). Not worth the hit imo.

Yes, but we humans are very bad at spotting our own failings and will so easily justify poor actions as being bad luck or other people's bad judgement. Listen to the PL managers comments after each game and you see this in action.

p.s. Laudrup is an exception here as much as here was an exceptional player.

They play a different game but the underlying human behaviour is there in both. Not saying you should be happy with things. What i am saying is that, if it goes wrong, recognise where it did and correct where you can. Just don't blame external factors.

We were crying out for a link from midfield against Palace so if Willian (I will also pronounce that Will-I-Am) is that man then fine by me. Sign him up. Is coverage a myth?

Not the word itself, I understand the principle but why is it essential to have players to 'cover' teams or not have too many players from a team?

Defensive cover - if a goal is scored and you have 2 defensive players for that team then you will have 2 players who immediately lose their clean sheet bonus. I get that, but why is doubling on solid, low conceding goals seemed as bad? That to me is good coverage. It has worked well for me in the past having 2 Stoke defensive players. So coverage defensively can be a good thing...but not always in the way people think.

But attacking cover I don't get. If you have Silva how have you 'covered' Man City and why should that make you get Lambert instead of Dzeko etc? One doesn't really reflect another. If you think Dzeko will score more than Lambert then pick him, why does it matter if you have Silva? So what about RVP? He is the only Man Utd player worth covering. I don't buy that either. Yes RVP is likely to score a few at home to Palace but that shouldn't then stop you signing Welbeck if you think he will outscore Benteke etc just because you have Man Utd already 'covered'.

So what am I trying to say? Pick players on how you think they will score on individual merit not because you want to 'cover' certain teams. Getting points this way is most certainly a myth.

Coverage, as the name suggest is insurance. Whilst the logic of your argument - which is to pick the player who will score most points - is undeniable, there are human elements involved here. Compare and contrast two teams: one scores 60pts per week unfailing while the other scores ZERO and 120pts alternately each week.

      which is better?

But it isn't a choice between 60+60 and 120+0. If you double up on defenders and they get 2 clean sheets out of 3 then it's a choice between 60+60+60 and 68+68+52. The former might sometimes be better in a head-to-head or when protecting a lead, but the latter should be better for your overall position.

Coverage is a useful term in that you have to plan rotating your players to maximise their coverage of good fixtures with in form players.

The only danger in taking 2 or 3 attacking players is this lack of flexibility to the fixtures.

That's why most try to avoid unless a fantastic run of fixtures or DGW is upcoming.

Of course its silly to buy a player with very low % involvement in goals and expect coverage.

      Upvote good topic.

I agree (obviously) that picking the highest scoring players is the best strategy, however I find it hard to guess who those players will be, correctly and consistently, and thus I find a loose "coverage" is useful.

It seems to be essentially the "eggs in a basket" problem. Man City, for example, will likely score weekly and will often score many goals, but they could go on a run of bad form in which they don't score at all or at least very little. If I drafted in Silva and Aguero and Dzeko (who all seem decent picks) and City happens to have a bad run of form, my team will be negatively affected. Of course if they have a good run I would likely do very well with these three. Like any selections there is some risk involved.

However picking multiple players from the same team, especially when they are both or all attackers or defenders, is often to risky. Instead, by having a loose coverage where attackers are spread out, maybe doubling and rarely if ever tripling, a team has a better chance of avoiding bad patches of form from certain teams.

      Precisely...

      Hazard & Mata
      Walcott & Cazorla.

If you had this quartet you'd have had four of the top eight last year.

Tack on Suarez & Gerrard that's six of the top ten...

*Although, this only applies to Classic leagues as you'd want to "spread the risk" in the H2H game.

The only place coverage has any merit is in cup competitions (and H2H to a certain extent) and even then it is not really coverage it is more just making sure you have a decent spread of players from teams that have decent fixtures so you don't end up with most of your team playing away in tough fixtures on the same weekend. This idea of getting a player from a team with good fixtures somehow covering their attacking points is just rubbish as it doesn't matter how good the fixtures are certain players will not score that well and in the case of the special players like suarez and rvp then going for valencia and downing definitely won't help you if those big boys score hattricks.

As someone above says just pick the players you think will score best. If that's Welbeck or Lambert go for the one that scores best and if you have a bit of a drop in the week utd score 6 (when welbeck doesn't score at all so it wouldn't have mattered if you had him) then so be it.

One difference is bonus potential. If you have 3 vs 3 in a single match (extreme, i know) - the max bonus potential for 6 players is 3+2+1 = 6.

On the other extreme, if your 6 players are playing in different matches the potential is 3 x 6 = 18.

Contrarily, coverage can be the more aggressive tactics as it maximises points potential. When you put all your eggs in one basket you will have great weeks and not so great weeks.

Plus you will struggle when DGW roles around.

Interesting on the bonus point idea. To me the bonus points, goals, assists etc are going to come your way when your player scores.

E.g. giroud this week got 2bp and walcott 0 but next week if theo gets a couple of goals he will likely get 3bp and giroud might only get 1 for his one goal.

Total score over the two gw's would be 15pts for walcott and 15. Is there any point in not having walcott the first week or not having giroud the next week when they are both averaging 7.5pts?

Still doesn't change the fact your maximum potential to score bonus points is higher when you cover multiple teams.

Walcott Giroud Santi = max per week 6 (discounting small chance they end up on same bps)
Walcott Lukuka Mate = max per week 9

All else being equal, you get an edge with players from different teams.

Good topic. I think there is a lot of misinformation about what the term coverage actually means. It is a loaded term because it can be interpreted in many different ways so its important first of all to understand what it is.

There are two main points that relate to coverage and that is to have a certain team covered (In either defence or attack), or to have a certain amount of coverage (eg doubling up in defence or attack, eggs baskets etc).

Understanding defensive cover is fairly straight forward so I will attempt to explain what REAL attacking cover means.

Attacking cover is not getting the likes of Wilshire or Carrick to cover Arsenal and United attack. This is where a lot of people get confused and there is a lot of misinformation. Attacking cover refers to specific players in a team that have a high 'goal involvement'. Goal involvement is the % of goals scored by the team that the player in question is involved in, whether it be scoring the goals or assisting them. For example last season Benteke was involved in 57% of Aston Villa's goals. This is particularly high so its quite reasonable to suggest that getting Benteke gives you Villa coverage. The same can be said for any player that might have a high goal involvement for their team.

The issue becomes increasingly important when you consider teams that score a lot of goals particularly if they have good fixtures. So its perfectly reasonable to consider City attacking cover at the moment. Eden Dzeko was involved in half of his teams goals during pre-season so again he could 'cover' city's attack provided he starts regularly. I see absolutely no problem with the term provided that it is interpreted correctly.

The only time attacking coverage applies is when you have a nailed-on player who has a goal involvement of over 1/3.

Otherwise, it's just people's ways of trying to cover all bases and spread risk.

I totally agree that doubling up on defence/attack is fine if you think those players will score the most.

My big dilemma, what to do with my Chelsea DW peeps?

This week's transfer, likely waiting until tomorrow before pulling the trigger but thought I'd get some views:

    A - Ivan to Shaw
    B - Haz to Silva
    C - Lukaku to Dzeko
    D - A&B together -4
    E - B&C together -4
    F - A&C together -4

Looking for a 4.0 million defender, to go on my bench for the next dozen games.
Talent not important. But must be a guaranteed starter.

I'm not convinced Whittaker (NOR) is a definite starter in the medium term.

Chester is probably your man. More good fixtures than bad in case you randomly need him, and still think Hull might tighten up a little bit. Nailed.
