Scout Report – Clint Dempsey

Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

Toure, Mutch, Bannan, Eriksen , (Walcott)
    Suarez, Rooney, Lukaku..
    Rooney (11.1 +.5 now) and Wally (9.3)

    What would u do..

    1ft, 0.5m in account
    A. Rooney and Wally out for Adebayor + Ozil or other (4pt hit)
    B. Just something like Wally out for Gerrard ( or other midfielder less than 9.8, Can't Ozil)

Long post ahead. The few paragraphs between the lines is the 'journey' I took and how I get to the conclusion..
I know for most of you, you just want the good stuff. So if it's TLDR feel free to skip it to conclusion although I won't guarantee whether I will make a reference to it in the conclusion or not. I'll try not too.
        _____________________________
Ok so yesterday I tried to alter the Season Ticker a bit by playing with the index to reflex the performance of the teams so far. I feel it's a bit outdated as, for example, West Brom is considered more likely to get a CS at home than Hull in the ticker.

I focus on the Clean Sheet ticker first because I thought it's more useful compared to the attacking one.

So I formulated a 'function' to determine a team's 'REAL' defense quality at both home and away - which basically factors in the amount of Goals Conceded and their Fixture Difficulty so far.

        ('Fixture Difficulty' being who they conceded to;
Like Hull has conceded least goals at home but to very easy opponents who struggles scoring away
As compared to City who condeded the same amount of goals at home but to harder opponents)

If you're interested to read how I took this further, refer to here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/01/06/frisking-the-fixtures-gameweek-21-the-weak/?hc_page=19#hc_comment_6466929

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turns out I took a false approach as it turns out to determine whether a team is favourable (blue) or unfavourable (red) in getting a CS in the ticker, it is determined by the opponent's attacking threat rather than the team's defense quality.

So for example if you put the figure "1" on Arsenal Away - it will automatically change all HOME fixtures against Arsenal as very favourable (dark blue) as Arsenal is REALLY bad attacking away.

It means I will have to formulate the team's attacking threat (both home and away) to find the right index for Clean Sheet ticker. The concept is pretty much the same with the one I did earlier so it's not start from scratch but I'll do it when I have the time.
        _______________________________________________________________________

HOWEVER, my work yesterday is not gone to waste without any useful information.

I did rate and rank every team's attacking threat away from home this season which is this.

        http://s27.postimg.org/6lopna10z/Away_Attacking_Threat_Rank.jpg

From there I calculate Each Team's Home Fixture Difficulty (which I call Home Opponent Index) so far - which is basically the Sum of the Ranks of the Opponent's Attacking Threat Away From Home. (Ha try to get that sentence in one try).

        http://s27.postimg.org/mazunhigi/Home_Opponent_Index_Calc.jpg

This is the cleaner version with just the results.

        http://s27.postimg.org/9tt70bnar/HOI.jpg

If you're not much into logic thinking, basically the team's with LOWER total Index means they have up against HARDER opposition (the likes of Arsenal, MU, Liverpool etc who score most goals away thus the higher rank) and vice versa.

I've been all talking about how HULL has managed to kept least goals and lots of CS because of the easy opponents which is confirmed there by the high HOI of 112 - but surprisingly LIVERPOOL have had the even easier opponents at home so far - being only MU the only top 10 away-scoring sides to play them at Anfield.

But Kof that is the past and what we want to know how this (long) information is useful for us in the future.

It's pretty simple. The teams that have had harder opposition (low HOI) at the first half of the season will have easier opposition at home in this half and the vice versa. I took the courtesy to calculate the Index for you and here it is. (Highest total index is 197)

        http://s27.postimg.org/qiumw8jw3/2nd_half_HOI.jpg

So that's the final thing. That's the final table that you want. Unsurprisingly most teams with highest 2nd half HOI have concede the most goals at home so far because they have played against harder opposition.

The key here is to find the right balance between teams with good opposition in the coming half and the goals they have concede so far.

For some such as myself believe in change of form and will monitor the likes of Sunderland and Cardiff who, by far, will have the easiest home fixtures (and fortunately, rotation). And for others may look to teams that has concede single-digit goals but still have decent oppositions next like MU, Arsenal and Hull.

City though is a different class. I'll have Nasty/Zaba/Kolarov (:D) in my WC team for sure. Wonder why there's very few of them in most WC teams.

So that's that. Sorry for the long post. Here's a sexy spud.

Good work. The focus on home fixtures only really works for rotation though, right?

City have easier home fixtures so by the nature of the fixtures (play everyone twice, have played everyone once) they must have harder away fixtures, and vice versa

So yeah good point with the Nasty, he'll bound to have harder away fixtures.

I'm just trying to point out City is a great choice with the upcoming home fixtures where City is so reliable at as compared to Arsenal's fixture in the next 6-10 GW after February.

                Oh got it.

Nah I will play him of course just like any other premium defenders.

In the short term his next away fixtures are (nor mun hul), pretty easy opposition there.

GW 30 above he will have harder fixtures (ars liv cpl eve) but I think he's reliability at home will outweigh the away fixtures.

Most big premium defenders will have hard fixtures where you'll play them as well. No difference from a City defender.

It's just at home - where you expect them to get a CS (main point source for most defender) - you'll probably want someone who play SUN STO AVL FUL (City) rather than NEW EVE TOT ARS (Terry).

          Interesting stuff.
Will be interesting to see how these ratings stack up goals wise for the next 18 games & if they were any use.

I expect Pool to concede less than the top 2 for example.

Probably Pool will concede less in the 18 fixtures.

This focus on the Home fixtures though - so in a way it can be used for the whole rotation if anyone is planning to do it.

Based on this, SUN/CAR should concede less than LIV.

          Good work.

I like models that use historical stats (e.g. shots in the box, shots conceded in the box, big chances, big chances conceded) as well as results, but obviously weighting historical results (i.e. actual goals scored/conceded) vs. historical stats is tricky.

Chris Glover's work in this area is of particular interest if you want to take it one step further.

After narrowing down my Wally replacement until my GW24 WC to Gerrard and Oscar, I'm really stuck.

Oscar probably has the higher potential, but Gerrard will get more game-time and has set-pieces in the locker.

Anyone feel like arguing the case for either of those two?

Gerrard have only blanked once since Suarez return.

Oscar is on form but may not nailed on for the next 3 GWs.

Close one but Oscar for flair considering it's just a punt. Mind as well going with the risky but high potential one

Oscar is very frustrating to own. I got rid minutes before the game closed for him to then not start but still rack up the points. Gerard nailed one but deeper.. Tough one, if pushed I'd say Oscar.

          i like Gerrard better

his set pieces are so dangerous and before he got injured he created the most chanses in the league

he is definitly in my wc team

oscar is brillinat option as well and i actually considering downgrading Haz for him

I'm staying clear of both but my avoidance of Gerard is irrational whereas for oscar he is too much of a rotation issue. One good 38mins has not guaranteed his place

I have irrationally avoided Gerrard over the last couple of years too. Since it is a 3 week punt I don't feel so bad about getting him in. Oscar is the more popular choice thought it seems

Gerrard can still play deep in some games and is pricey. I expect Oscars gametime to increase as Mata becomes more of a bench player. Mata might even go in January or throw his toys out fo the pram. When Oscar does come off the bench its usually with instructions to run at the defence and score so Im happy with that. Suarez is enough Pool for me.

By spending more time on the bench and getting less game time. Seems to becoming a more marginal player as every game passes.

What do you think about this team?

        Kelvin Davis - Mannone

        Chiriches - Kolarov - Coleman - Chester - Parr

        Silva - Hazard - Ozil - Januzaj - Puncheon

        Adebayor - Suarez - Negredo

Left money in the bank for Aguero for Negredo later this month

        Kelvin Davis/Boruc
        Coleman/Mertesacker/Chester/Ward/Baker
        Ozil/Lallana/Oscar/Gerrard/Januzaj
        Suarez/Rooney/Adebayor
        0,5m itb

Is it an idea to downgrade Rooney to Negredo so I can upgrade Oscar to Hazard? Or downgrade Mert>Kos for Oscar>Silva?

Coming down to few last decisions on WC.

        a) Clyne & Januzaj

        b) Nasty & Punch

Jan looking like a decent pick, but can see having to bench him quite a bit anyway

I think Rooney will start. He played the last PL game and Moyes said he'd miss games in the future. Even at the time plenty of people said he would miss the upcoming cup games. He'll be desperate for a win and if he was OK to play 10 days before hand I think he'll be fine for the weekend. It'd be a different story if the Sunderland game wasn't a two-leg semi final.

              Same.

Although I'm thinking to transfer him out this week, even if I know he'll play through the pain. Because it's more likely another 1 pointer (after his incoming reckless yellow).

Better I spent on someone cheaper and on form which will allow me to get a more premium replacement (Yaya) for my sterling next week.

Wait why am I telling all this.

Too much SOU could hurt you.

If Ade is short term then I'd go with that. Especially if Aguero is your target.

Need a little advice on these two options:

        A) Azpil, Nasty & Punch/Janujaz

        B) Bardsley, Chester & Eriksen

I think option A gives me better balance and flexibility with the upcoming 4 fixtures. I also think it is good to have defensive cover for Chelsea and Man City.

However, option B gives the mid-priced 4th MF which may be important, especially with Ramsey to come back.

I am inclined to go with A, but would be interested to know what others think.

Morning all, great piece of work from koflok above - which throws a spanner in the below.

        RM(templatish) GW24 WCT

Mannone / Marshall - seems to be the rotation of choice
Vlaar, Coleman, Kos, Chester, Ward - same as my current defence
Cabaye, Ramsey, Silva, Hazard, Gerrard - clearly 2 injury problems there, but hoping resolved by GW24
        Aguero, Suarez, JRod
        0.9m spare

Fair point. Baines just has great fixtures and is probably the most attacking defender in the game (except now for Coleman) with pens and set pieces in his locker.

Which of these do you prefer in the above?

                  Coleman PPG of 5.6m.

Ask JOA to forward you Baines's stats prior to his injury.

Could anyone tell me why Chester is rising slower than other players?

        Extracted from TotalFPL:

        Player NTI Rise
        --------------------------------------------------
        Chester 413 0.2%
        Yaya Toure 312 0.8%
        Mertesacker 367 0.8%

I don't get it.. Someone please give me a hint..

I thought if some player has more owners than it need more transfers in to be changed by 1 procent

My only guess will be that if a player drops below their original price being a factor. 🙂

and those with great ownership need less as it's harder for them to attract transfers due to the big ownership.

        Chelsea fans...

How do you think Mourinho will approach the game away to Hull this weekend?

I assume Hull will try to keep it tight but will also want to attack in front of their own fans. Will Mourinho set Chelsea up to frustrate and maybe score on the break?

I ask because Hull have been excellent defensively at home this season and I'm wondering if we will see a low scoring game or whether Chelsea will go for it

Hull's home clean sheets have come vs Fulham, Villa, Norwich, WHM, Sunderland and Stoke so whilst still impressive, it's perhaps not as good as it first seems.

And this is also a huge reality check to those wanting Chester. I see only perhaps 1 clean sheet the rest of the season for WBA at home (they have also already played Cardiff and Palace at hame).

I think he'd want to be solid at the back as we have been for the past few weeks. Ivan being out helps and Mikel will start. Playing on the counter, yes.

Half tempted to put the armband on Hazard
