The Community Round Up

A wind of change is in the air as the community battens down the hatches and braces itself for a dramatic shift in the fixture list. As we patiently sit through the third international break of the season, our community writers have indulged in a spot of crystal ball gazing, with a little help from their calculators and, surprisingly, Jimmy Bullard. We also catch up on the latest statistics in our members tables and some impressive league leaders in our community tournaments.

The Community Articles

Crystal ball gazing was taken to new number crunching levels by Footballoholic and Gillesdegoult this week. Firstly, Footballoholic presented this excellent look at the goal scoring potential of all Premier League sides over the next six weeks, based on the defensive form of their opponents, before Gillesdegoult then followed this research up by combining attacking form of all teams.

Heels over heads was also busy soothsaying, looking at the defensive form of Premier League sides over a number of seasons to assess whether Southampton can significantly add to their seven clean sheets so far.

Christina has been looking ahead to Christmas and provided us with this Dickensian look at some of the Premier League’s struggling sides chances of success over the festive period.

Finally, with a little bit of help from former Wigan and Hull legend Jimmy Bullard, John Terry’s Dog looked at the similarities of being a Fantasy Football manager and running a business.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article. We also offer £25 to the writer of the most popular article each month.

The Hottest Topics

An imminent shift in the fixture list, when Southampton’s kind run comes to a dramatic end and Chelsea and Liverpool face easier opposition, dominated discussion this week.

Ahead of Liverpool’s run over the next four Gameweeks (cpl, STO, lei, SUN) many are eagerly awaiting Daniel Sturridge’s return from injury. In our discussion on how his comeback will affect our teams, Doosra and myself took a good look into his recent statistics to assess just whether his reputation for selfishness in front of goal is myth or reality.

For many, though, Liverpool’s good fixtures mean little when their recent form is so dire. In our discussion on the form over fixtures debate Moin was among the fixture list fans, while Gary 32 pointed out that Spurs recent poor home record against weaker teams proves form can often win the day.

Turning to Southampton’s poor run of fixtures, that includes Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal in the next four, Dat Guy has been looking at the south coast side’s form against bigger sides. This provided a compelling argument for ditching Saints defenders, while in stark contrast Accounting on Chris believes that they could be worth hanging onto despite the tough upcoming opposition.

Dat Guy also looked at some emerging conflict of interests coming up in the fixture list, where popular defenders face well-owned attackers. To get on top of such issues the community is urged to make full use of our season ticker, which has been afforded an autumnal refresh to take recent form into account.

Chelsea’s fine upcoming run (WBA, sun, TOT, new, HUL, sto) has many Fantasy managers mulling over which Blues players to draft in. But Sinik wonders whether now may be a good time to cash in on Cesc Fabregas’s recent price rises and look elsewhere among their ranks. Eden Hazard has the potential to thrive but Eaglia remains unconvinced and believes his strong performances are still not being converted into solid Fantasy Football returns.

On numerous occasions, a change in system can be attributed as a key reason for some players’ failure to being in the points. However, in Giggs Boson’s tactics talk, he believes it’s far too simplistic to blame formations when players fail.

Among those to benefit from a team’s change in tactics is Leighton Baines, who, under manager Roberto Martinez, has been given considerable licence to attack down Everton’s left flank. In our latest round up of so-called ‘essential’ players Baines was a name mentioned time and again – Brian (not the messiah) is among his many fans and later in the week urged Baines owners to cling on to him for dear life. Another member of the Baines fan club is MJ6987, who placed the Everton defender on his list of the best four Fantasy assets.

Our biggest discussion this week was sparked by Bojan Is For Kinnear with the simple line “You know you’re a Fantasy Football addict when…”. Among the best replies was from TheHut who recounted the many times his question of ‘who got the assist’ is met with incredulity from fellow spectators.

Finally, a message from Bsloebadger also proved to be one of the most talked about hot topics this week. Concerned that people take too much heed in a person’s rank when receiving advice, he instead believes everyone’s advice is valid, whether highly or lowly ranked. The key criteria for giving and receiving advice should instead be politeness, he added.

The Members Tables

Manchester United is another team that have improved fixtures on the horizon. I’ve been taking a look at their attacking threat. Members are urged to sort this table by last two Gameweeks to see who has been the Red Devils’ most prolific shooters since their switch to a more defensive formation.

Sturridge’s imminent return prompted Doosra to carry out a temporary revamp of his Forward Foragers table, which takes a look at the strikers who excel at holding the ball and providing chances. This now focuses on last season’s statistics to give a better look at the Liverpool striker’s statistics.

Elsewhere, Guidinho has constructed a table to focus on full back potential, with a strong focus on crossing and creativity.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Leagues

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, 878 teams survived after 54 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 55.

In the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league Tinkerman has opened up a 22 lead on second placed Mark. With a rank of 79th overall, Tinkerman will be tough to catch.

Tinkerman has to settle for second in the Long and Winding Road main league behind league leader King Nil Miss, who is 18th overall.

Rasping Drive, who is 43rd overall, continues to dominate many of our other community leagues, topping the FFS Old Farts Club, FFS Dead Zone and The Puffinboy Memorial Cup.

Whats the biggest points hit you have ever taken?

I have only done -4 once so far once this season.

Really thinking of doing a -12 this week

a 12, probably. Taken quite a few 8s, as well.

      What's the 12-pointer you're thinking of?

I took a -12 that worked out 24 points better off for me by the end of the gameweek. Ricky lambert scored a brace as one of the moves as I remember.

I did -20 a few times back in season 2009/10.

Limited to -12 since 2010/11 though.

Already took -12 once this season. 😆

I take a variety of -4 & -8 hits each week. My worst gw was when I just used my ft & no hits. I love taking hits. If Baines is out I'll bring in Azpi for a -8.

Think i did a 20 pointer a few years ago.

      Done a 12 this week:-

      Pelle -> Aguero
      Erikson -> Sanchez
      Fabregas -> Sterling
      Chambers -> Yun

Think it will pay off in the long run, had to get Aguero and Sanchez as i was being killed in my ML by these two.

    Pelle ->Aguero on a FT?

I know Pelle is against Villa's terrible and injured defense but Soton have not scored much away from home. 12 of their goals were scored in 2 home games and most of their away wins are 1-0. I am also considering giving the armband to Aguero over Costa. What do you guys think?

Ah I see. Tought you meant next GW as in GW13. Tough one. Bar one good gameweek Tadic hasnt produced anything. SO Im going to assume the same will be ture against Villa. If Arsenal or United score I think either ADM or Sanchez will likely be involved so Im going to say them.

@Billy Gilmore: Here is a quick video depicting exactly what I was explaining earlier about the rotation.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZIB_leg75Q

As you can see, the moon rotates, but not about its OWN axis. In other words, its center of rotation is more or less at the center of the Earth.

Hopefully that clarifies that point for ya! ... (I'll leave the other part for a sunny day... 😉 )

I'm aware of what happens... What you're saying is fundamentally wrong...consider the moon as its own system with no external influence. Does it rotate about its own axis? Of course it does.

      1. rickardinho
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

But it DOES have external influence, from the Earth...

What I mean is that it doesn't spin ad revolve around its own center, as is explained in the first part of that video, but rather, it revolves around the earth in sync.

There is a tidal influence from the earth. Correct.

My point is that the "point" about which the moon rotates is at the center of the Earth (or very near to it).

              Look up Libration.

If the moon span around the earth then it would change the speed it span based on the distance it is from the earth. However its spin speed is constant, and its orbit is eliptical.

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbit_of_the_Moon#mediaviewer/File:Lunar_libration_with_phase2.gif

Notice how the side facing the earth is not in fact fixed.

There's only one point of view that you can investigate these things from – the point of view of the body that you're looking at. Yes if you look at the earth and moon as a pair it appears the moon rotates about the earth. But earth is orbiting the sun which is orbiting the centre of the milky way which is orbiting god knows what else.

          See the issue?

      - the moons dark side was physically engineered to remain that way by an e.t technology.
-this enables a e.t moon base to post there free of detection

I don't profess to know what relationship exists between those parties, or if there is any communication whatsoever, just that they exist, and our governments are covering it up.

Why? Money and power. Advanced anti-gravity and other propulsion technology recovered and reverse-engineered from the Roswell craft (among others) could wipe out our dependence on fossil fuels, but then those in power couldn't keep filling their pockets and controlling the worlds economy if such systems were introduced to the public.

Yes, let's cover up something that we have a complete monopoly over in order to preserve a system we have far less control over...

Actually that's something I can see America doing 😆

New technology is FREE energy, so there is absolutely no monopoly on it once it is public.

And if you believe for a second that the US don't already control the worlds energy you are dead wrong. Any country that wants to get off the petrodollar gets its ass kicked by Uncle Sam through invasion or implanted military coups to preserve their economical and political interests. See Iraq x2, Algeria, Libya, Venezuela, Syria>Iran.

Then there's also the drug trade: did you know that since the US invaded Afghanistan (which had no WMD's or "terrorists") exportation of heroin and opium has increased to produce 90% of the worlds supply? Same reason why Vietnam was invadad - to control the Southeast Asian drug market that can finance military and CIA blackops.

They control the technology which means they have TOTAL control over IF they release it to the public, HOW much people will have to pay to use the technology etc.

I'm aware of how much control the US has over the world's oil, but it's a far cry from the 100% control they would have over this technology if it existed.

Have you noticed that the sun rotates around the earths axis as well?

In all seriousness, the moon is rotating around its own axis and orbiting around earth. The orbit is elliptical. If the moon was as you say only rotating with a centre of axis at the centre of the earth, then the rotation of the moon would not be constant and would be a function of the ellispe. It is a constant rotation.

The sun doesn't rotate around Earth, its at the center of our galaxy and the Earth orbits around it, not the other way around 😉

I think we might be saying the same thing about the moons rotation but in different ways. Lets just move on.

        1. Ginkapo FPL
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 5 months ago

No we are not saying the same thing. There are subtletys in your argument which undermine it.

The moon is not actually synchronously rotating around the earth. It only does this on average. You are correct that the moon's spin is influenced to the proximity of the large mass that is the earth. That can be entirely explained by gravitational forces which goes against your belief that we are being duped.

If there was a conspiracy then it goes all the way back to Isaac Newton.

I didn't intend to say that the moon's behaviour was unnatural or against Newton's Laws of Gravitational attraction. Rather, what I meant earlier was that we don't know where the moon came from, and its position relative to the Earth could have been manipulated into that orbit, similar to how we launch satellites into orbit our own along with other planets.

Am slightly surprised at the volume of people preparing to ship out pelle.

Given his price, consistency, nailedonness, quality of team he plays for, his price is a steal for anyone that bought around 8M or less.

On top of that the so called difficult run is against MCI, ars, MUN. Not defences to be concerned by. Also, the man city game coming on the back of their champions league game against bayern also.

I don't think he has looked quite as sharp lately, but that happens over a season. I'm expecting 200 pts

haha last season i have a tv of 117m and i have "problem" spending it all..and i have a tendency to just get the biggest stars and ignore other form players...u might not ignore players on form..but it will leave u with alot of $$ in the bank

just want to say TV is not everything..try not to put it as the highest priority..there is always on form players that act as a premium player in the short term, which will help even if ur TV is not amazing.

might get in bony/austin/rooney(if rvp falcao injuried)..if i get in austin i might get in sterling too in the meanwhile.

I don't live for TV, but it should-so long as you don't get suckered in to feeling like you have to spend it-afford you choices that rivals may not have. The difference between baines and a budget maybe, or Sanchez and Nasri, and so on.

I value FTs very highly as I don't like to spend points. This week will be my first -4. Was 5k but have fallen back to 70, and need to arrest the slump...so for those looking to get hind back in I look at the two transfers spent and place a high cost on them.

Austin looked tasty against city, and on pens so can't argue with that as a pick. Just have to see if he and bobby can keep it up.

no worries i was 170k on gw8 and now 700+ by gw11..all u need is a few good move and u will rise.

its always good to place FT highly..my opinion is whether its free or a -4 its still the same..so each -4/free are of equal importance

surely u can wait to see about austin and keep pelle..in fact no1 knows how he will perform against the big teams..so its a good decision to at least keep against city..though austin has a tasty match on gw13 which i m not sure whether i want to miss the potential haul or be cautious and see how pelle does. 1 thing i know is if either oscar/sterling plays well this coming gw..i would be tempted to pull the trigger on pelle earlier

but if there appears a better option that u are convinced in..go for it..do not let TV affect your decision.

Yep between Cresswell and Azpi for me. I see Azpi as more a long term though and watch those second half of the season clean sheets roll in. Cresswell excites me more - he's starting to find some good creative form.

Agree with this but it's hard to justify 5.4 on Cresswell, I just feel he's a tad expensive when you can have Azpi for .6 more and all that goes with it.
Tho I may end up getting both with my Baines slush fund.

We don't know if it is at this stage. It's his hamstring though so could be just a twinge or could be a few weeks out...be keeping a close eye on Everton announcements during the week.

some of the worst injuries come in training - Dean Ashton's career was ended in a training ground incident and Sturridge's current injury was from training. England training sounds like an episode of Game of Thrones in terms of life expectancy and injury.

I had him for the first part of this season mainly for the promise of bonus. He racked them up last season. But this season he is way down in BPS and goal threat. Azpi offers a notch more for me. Cahill is also better than Terry for bonus and now goal threat.

I'd rank Terry as fourth best fantasy asset among Chelsea's defenders.

I'm always wary of getting defenders in based on goal threat...as defenders rarely score. Bonus, assists for full backs and clean sheets are the key for me. Goals are obviously nice but too rare among centre backs.

when people look at their transfers they are too soon to determine whether the hit pays off or fails..

for example if u do fab->tadic and got his 23pts..has the transfer/hit pays off? unless u sell tadic->fab straight away if not u will get his string of 3pts in the following few weeks while fab gets his consistent assists.

so no point thinking about your transfers fail over 1 week as it should be viewed over a few weeks..unless u are preparing to do a 1 week punt which seldom works out anyway

Fair comment. Although bar Sanchez I can't think, off the top of my head, of a midfielder that has outscored Tadic over the last four gameweeks. Doesn't defeat your point tho.

Chambers is another example of a player with an anomaly. He has scored 0 in 3 of the last 5 weeks (granted only playing 2 of those 3) but it's all about the 18. Folk just get the blinkers on, and want to think they are FF heroes!

Haha yeah but what Im saying is you could transfer Tadic in for free and it will still be a bad transfer. You gained points that week to cover the -4 you lost so the hit was justified just not the long term transfer

Oh.. Market is really slow. Downing didn't rise last night and no rise for two days.

So, one last chance for me to consider the options to downgrade MF to get Costa.

A: Fab > Moses ... Injured, 4 bookings, less chance in the box, but so consistency on assist and on all Chelsea set-piece. Moses, the replacement, has good stats for individual and team but quite a punt.

B: ADM > Downing ... Not in fine form and share set-piece with Rooney now, but more goal threat than Fab. His replacement, Downing, is in good form and has good fixtures but probably got a minor injury.

One of the moves will enables me to do Welbeck > Costa. I can't make my mind yet.. 🙁
