The Community Round Up

The timing of winter Wildcards is proving crucial right now. While many in the Fantasy Football Scout community are hanging on until the bitter end of the transfer window, some of those who drafted in Sergio Aguero last week are perhaps regretting the decision to bring him in so soon. Our community writers were full of advice this week on Wildcard squads, ways to climb up the rankings and which Chelsea assets to select. The week’s hot topics examined defensive line ups and expensive forward lines, while the Members Tables took a cheeky look at Gameweek 22’s penalty-gate, which left Leighton Baines owners heartbroken. We take time out to revisit all this and, as ever, catch up on the latest ups and downs in our community tournaments.

The Community Articles

As Wildcards continue to be dealt, the current leader of the FFScout moderators and contributors league, Greenwindmill, took his turn to mull over the options, in the latest in our regular Rate My Wildcard Team series. Getting the right balance of heavy hitters, mid price punts and cheap bench players is proving key to his decision.

Selecting the right Chelsea players is a tricky task – not only are there numerous options, there’s also the threat of a possible blank Gameweek 27 looming large, should they progress to the Capital One Cup final. Thankfully Ruccells was on hand to look over the key Chelsea contenders. Meanwhile, Jaffalicious‘s focus was on getting the best cheap defensive rotation out of your wildcard as well as the pitch time and value of Chelsea’s key midfield trio of Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard and Oscar.

Another consideration for wildcarders is current rank, says Triggerlips. His excellent article on the best strategies for the remainder of the season has a strong focus on matching the best tactics to your current overall ranking. The ensuing discussion also spilled out into the main article comment section, where the community offered further rank-climbing tips.

Sergio Aguero is a player many are hoping will propel them up the rankings, but Ruth_NZ offers up some analysis to suggest he may not be the saviour some believe.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Defenders are proving tough to pick for those on a Wildcard. Among the most popular picks, according to (Charlie) Austin 3:16’s discussion on the latest must haves, are Chelsea and Southampton defenders.

Toaster’s look at the Arsenal options in defence will also prove crucial reading for those looking to assemble the best back lines, as will Ludo’s rankings of the Premier League’s best defences so far. This offers another strong argument in favour of drafting in Southampton and Chelsea defenders. Meanwhile, Ice thinks that Arsenal’s cut price defender Hector Bellerin looks primed for points, after seemingly wrestling the right back berth off Calum Chambers.

In midfield, the search for differentials continues. Southampton’s Eljero Elia is among the latest crop of names being considered but our resident Bundesliga expert Portsmouth Bubblejet, urges caution. The winger, who is on loan from Werder Bremen, had mixed fortunes in Germany, where his bursts of good form have proved short lived.

Another increasingly popular midfield differential is Crystal Palace’s Jason Puncheon, who looks revitalised under the watchful eye of new Eagles boss Alan Pardew. Walsh’s excellent look at how Pardew is utilising Puncheon in different ways offers hope to his new owners as well as some seeds of doubt.

Sticking with midfield options, we revisited Kroos Kontrol’s early January article on fourth midfielders, which looked at those who fall between heavy hitter and bench fodder status. In our discussion New Head Coach is For Kinnear believes Manchester City and Arsenal offer the best locations to find these potentially lucrative players.

Whether or not to draft in Chelsea’s 17-goal hero Diego Costa was the key issue being asked by Rozzo, as the community turned its attention to their forward lines this week. In the ensuing debate Granville argued having Fabregas provides enough cover for Costa’s goals, whereas Debauchy was among those looking to bring him back in on their wildcard.

For some, shoe-horning in Costa and Aguero is an option, despite both coming with weighty price tags. Rupert The Horse was on hand to look at the type of midfield Fantasy managers would be left with if they opted for this pricey pair.

It is not just winter Wildcards that some of the community are hanging onto, some still have their initial Wildcard at their disposal. Patio Kev was on hand this week with a word of warning for those holding back in anticipation of a raft of double Gameweeks later in the season.

Finally, Fiona B launched a Monday Morning Miffed discussion, with Aguero’s single point among the many grumblings. This looks like it could be a good regular hot topic in the frustrating Gameweeks ahead.

The Members Tables

When Kevin Mirallas took the ball off Everton’s usual penalty taker Leighton Baines and promptly missed against the Baggies last Monday, the Belgian became public enemy number one among the England defender’s 632,000 FPL owners. To lighten the mood Dub has constructed this cheeky table on the Mirallas Effect on Baines.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

As a testament to the success of the Scout Picks this season, which are compiled with help from a Community Champion, our picks now top @OFCProdigy’s Scout Picks Challenge. Following Gameweek 21 we leapt into first place with Mookie in second and Sticky Mockwell in third.

While Greenwindmill continues to top the FFScout moderators and contributors league he faces a new rival in Mark, who has leapt into second with an impressive Gameweek 22 score of 79.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing competition, 508 teams survived after 48 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 33.

Elsewhere, Sarbab Das remains at the summit of the Long and Winding Road main league, while it was all change at the top of the Top 1,000 Any Season league, where Ross Gillard is the new leader.

In Red Lightning’s FFS January Wildcard League (352700-723212), Andy in Asia is the new leader despite not having played his winter wildcard yet. Entry remains open during the winter transfer window.

Meanwhile, in another of Red Lightning’s leagues, Aaron Thorburn still leads the Top 10k Any Season League and following Gameweek 22’s matches moved up to 32nd in the world.

For me it's between Cazorla and Walcott. Villa are terrible and Arsenal players are playing for their spots with Theo and Ozil returning.

  14. Time to avoid United attack?
    Ruth_NZ
    • 9 Years
    9 years, 3 months ago

Genuine question... Can a case really be made for having anyone apart from DDG and/or Jones from Man Utd in a FPL squad?

ADM is world class but who knows what position he'll play in and LVG's refusal to give the team any kind of stable way of playing is hurting him. Falcao certainly was world class and appears to be fully recovered from his injury now in which case he should be banging goals in for fun, he's a brilliant goalscoring striker. Rooney is a proven FPL asset but for some reason is now playing in midfield.

At 9.5m and 10.5m, ADM and Falcao would be obvious FPL choices if they were playing in a settled team. If they were at, say, Chelsea they'd be worth 11m and 12m. But at the moment it just looks wiser to avoid United completely (apart from maybe a defender). Despite the great fixtures.

I agree with that. I was pretty set on having AdM in my WC team given fixtures upcoming but I have changed my mind and replaced him with Eriksen.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Yes, I'm in the same boat. I'll probably have Falcao next weekend but that will be a pre-wildcard punt. ADM is the one that troubles me most and if I decide to avoid him it will mean quite a few changes because whoever I replace him with won't cost more than 8.2/8.3 and that will give me 1.2/1.3 more to play with.

The tantalising thing about ADM is with United having no Europe he's as nailed on for PL games as any player could possibly be.

        1. Walsh
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

The extra mill+ into defense goes a long way. Tantalizing indeed but at the end of the day I don't think the juice will be worth the squeeze. He's also more of an assister than a goal scorer it seems so it will be tough for him to be worth his price given the overall attacking woes of United as you described.

    2. Snikii
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

I dont care about form or at least is not my first priority, I pick my players on their ability and fixtures, so I am getting ADM on my wc.

Now you've said it! United will go on a run now and bang in goals for fun and we'll all madly scramble about to put xxx in our teams for next GW.

    4. Dub

Yeah, in Utd we will go from having 4 or 5 players that are too expensive to take a risk on, to 1 or 2 full steam bandwagons when LVG settles on a team. The trick is going to be picking the right train and boarding early!

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

But will he settle on a team at all? He's had 7 months in the job and has spent £150m or something, Wouldn't you expect some kind of settled way of playing by now?

I think he will. A purple patch of form will likely force his hand, and I think he must be under a lot of pressure to give the team some stability, not just from the fans either.

    5. SC not pearls before swine

I am kind of intrigued by them just because of how well Liverpool performed last year without having European fixtures to worry about. That said, none of the strikers look convincing, and I think Di Maria is a step below Haz/Sanchez in terms of goal threat, and he hasn't shown he's better than Silva or Fabregas.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

ADM on his Real Madrid form and Falcao on his Atletico Madrid form would walk into my team without me needing to think twice at their current prices. I agree about ADM's goal threat but at 9.5 compared to 11.5 that's already reflected in the price. He's fundamentally at least as good as Fabregas or Silva.

To be perfectly honest I think it's a "stick a pin in it" type of decision. You can't be confident of making the right decision whichever way you go.

Mourinho utilized ADM pretty effectively at Real Madrid as far as I'm aware.

As for Falcao, read Ibrahimovic's interviews about what Mourinho did for him at Inter Milan. They remain close friends even now.

I can understand you being sore. But to cast Mourinho as a negative manager is far away from the truth, many of his teams have broken goalscoring records. What he is, is a manager that is not bound by a fixated view of how he wants his team to play. He will adjust to the opposition. Personally I think that's one of his greatest strengths.

Don't think Heaton id worth the price and I'd never feel comfortable benching Panti with his save points. Maybe go with Hamer to save pounds? Or Krul if you do want to rotate.
Wassa may as well become Baird as WBA are a better defensive unit and his price will rise faster than Wasil imo.
I'd lose Chadli > Puncheon or Downing (if you don't lose too much value)?

But Hamer will lose out once Schmeicel returns?

Oh ok, then don't bother and save the 0.1 as you would prob never use him anyway.

Well I think Krul is a better alternative so I've gone Heaton -> Krul

Going back to Downing/Chadders, I would lose too much value if I sell Downing but I brought in Chadders on WC so I'm not sure if I should keep him.

Punch would save me 1.1m then I could probably play around with my defense a bit more. Thoughts?

Yep Chadli > Punch sounds good for at least a few weeks with Pardew in search of goals.

Your defence is pretty good. You will play Terry and Kosc every week and it might also be feasible to play Wisdom as well with Pulis now in charge. Not sure if a bigger 3rd defender is a waste of cash??
WBA defensive points will just otherwise be sitting on your bench. May be a better tactic to leave the extra ££ for a Puncheon upgrade later on if you need it.

Hello DZ, haven't been around much this week.

Could I ask for some help?

    Current WC squad:

    Begovic Foster

Terry Fonte Wisdom Van Aanholt Duff

    Hazard Sanchez *** *** Boyd

    Aguero Costa Kane

Got 12.5 to spend on 2 midfielders with Downing value @ 6.3

There is suddenly a lack of options - Jedinak, Mirallas, Mane, Chadli, Johnson, Sigurdsson either injured, suspended, away etc.

what's wrong with Chadli? On fixtures, I'd go with Elia and Puncheon.

I'd keep Downing for 2 more GW's and get Puncheon alongside him.
