Scout Scribbles – Gradel Sidelined for Cherries

Bournemouth winger Max Gradel is set for a spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury. West Ham’s Mark Noble is available for selection after the FA overturned his weekend red card, Ibrahim Afellay is handed a ban reduction, whilst Roberto Martinez confirms Tom Cleverley’s ankle ligament absence.

Gradel Blow for Bournemouth

Scans have revealed that Bournemouth winger Max Gradel ruptured his cruciate ligament during the weekend draw with Leicester City, ruling him out for up to six months. Elsewhere, the injury concerns are building for Eddie Howe after Tyrone Mings took to twitter yesterday to suggest he has sustained medial ligament damage before quickly deleting the post.

The Scout Says: Gradel was displaying laudable form before he succumbed to injury, having tallied three assists in his previous two outings. His absence will doubtless come as a blow to Callum Wilson’s 19.5% ownership and the Cherries’ attacking prospects as a whole, given that the Ivorian winger was executing key passes at a greater frequency (one every 52 minutes) than any of their midfield contingent. Marc Pugh (5.0) will likely now take up the responsibility of providing width on the left, with Christian Atsu and the versatile Joshua King offering further alternatives. Focusing our attention on Bournemouth’s embattled rearguard, with first-choice left-back Charlie Daniels also expected to be sidelined through injury, Howe drafted in Joe Bennett on a six-month loan deal on deadline day. Priced at 4.0, the Aston Villa defender could offer us a rare budget starter during a favourable quartet of upcoming fixtures (nor, SUN, sto, WAT, though would-be investors are best holding until we get a definite prognosis on Daniels’ likely length of absence.

Noble in the clear

West Ham have successfully appealed Mark Noble’s dismissal away to Liverpool in the previous Gameweek. Yesterday, the FA rescinded his red card and subsequent three-match ban, meaning the Hammers midfielder is now available for selection with immediate effect.

The Scout Says: There’s no doubt that Slaven Bilic’s arrival has boosted West Ham’s attacking prospects this term and Noble, with two goals in the last couple of Gameweeks, has already equalled his 2014/15 tally. The Upton Park outfit have scored nine times in the first four – only City (ten) have netted more often – and, as the club’s number one spot-kick taker, Noble, with a mere 0.4% ownership, has remained very much under the radar. With Newcastle, Norwich, Sunderland and Palace in the next five, the schedule looks prosperous for the Hammers, though there’s no shortage of option in the centre of the park after a busy transfer deadline day. The arrival of wide men Victor Moses (5.3) and Michail Antonio (6.0) could force a possible switch to 4-2-3-1, with Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate (two goals, one assist so far) stationed in the double-pivot, and focus attentions on the former pair as cheaper alternatives to Dimitri Payet (7.6) for those eyeing up a route into Bilic’s flourishing attack.

Afellay handed ban reduction

Ibrahim Afelllay’s three-match ban for slapping Craig Gardener has been reduced to two games by the FA following a successful appeal by Stoke City.

The Scout Says: Although Afellay will still sit out a trip to Arsenal and a home tie against Leicester City, he’ll return for Bournemouth’s visit to the Britannia Stadium in Gameweek 7. His absence paves the way for Marko Arnautovic to reclaim a starting berth on the left flank, having been displaced by the former Barcelona starlet last time out against the Baggies. Those Fantasy managers eyeing attacking coverage for the Potters will be more interested by the form of Mame Biram Diouf (two goals in three outings) and the tantalising potential of Xherdan Shaqiri (one assist in two starts). Certainly, beyond a trip to the Emirates, the Staffordshire outfit enjoy an excellent run of fixtures (LEI, BOU, avl, swa, WAT, new) that greatly enhances the prospects of their forward line.

Mixed News for Martinez’ Midfield

Everton midfielder James McCarthy is set for knee scans after the Republic of Ireland midfielder picked up a minor knock during training for their Euro 2016 qualifiers. Martin O’Neill detailed the Toffees’ request, insisting that he expects nothing untoward to emerge from the tests:

“I was speaking to Alan (Byrne, Irish team doctor) and more importantly the player (McCarthy), and the player’s not too concerned, so that’s OK. I think it’s something Everton wanted to do so, fine, we’ll fall into line and go with it. I can’t envisage a problem at the moment. If it is, it might not be anything to do with the scan – obviously your concern would be training, like something that happened with Jeff (Hendrick) today. I think Jeff hopes he will be okay himself but those would be the things that concern me in the next couple of days of training.”

Elsewhere in the Everton camp, Roberto Martinez confirmed that Tom Cleverley sustained ankle ligament damage in the goalless draw at Spurs following a challenge from Erik Dier. The Toffees boss couldn’t provide an estimated return date, though:

“We thought that it was a fracture and to have a fracture at this stage of the season for Tom would have been devastating because his form has been terrific. He has got ligament damage and the next step will be to see how long he is going to be out. It’s an injury we need to try and recover as quickly as we can but clearly it’s good news from when we saw Tom falling to the ground at White Hart Lane.”

In more positive developments, Gerard Deulofeu captained Spain’s U21 outfit to a 2-0 victory over Estonia, claiming a goal (penalty) and assist in the process.

The Scout Says: With Cleverley out of the picture for the foreseeable future, Martinez will need to fill the void on the Everton left. There’s no shortage of contenders here, with Kevin Mirallas perhaps the likeliest candidate, having been handed a 45-minute cameo against Spurs last Gameweek. The 6.9-priced Belgian wide man tallied seven goals and one assist in just 1421 minutes last term, highlighting his potential to develop into a top Fantasy asset, though could also face competition from the improving Deulofeu, with Arouna Kone and Aaron Lennon likely to battle it out on the opposite flank. Having failed to score in the last two matches, and with some tough fixtures to follow (CHE, swa, wba, LIV, MUN, ars) it’s difficult to justify investing in the Merseysiders until the schedule smiles kindly from Gameweek 11 onwards.

I'd have Pedro if I was on WC personally but I can't fault any of those picks - another blank from Alexis though and I'm considering getting him out.

Azpi worries me, Chelsea don't look capable of holding a CS at the moment and you're going to lose value on him of the next few weeks. Darmian's fixtures are poor, Targett won't be first choice for much longer. Sagna is OK for now but will eventually be rotated. Realistically I think you need to consider exit plans for three or for of your defenders.

Moving into midfield, you got a fairly nice four there, although would consider shifting Depay to Pedro (move Ivan to a 4.5 to afford it).

Up front looks weak personally, would want Gomis there, or at least the ability to move to a more expensive striker if/when one explodes.

Looking back its great to see how on the ball the writers were about trends. five defenders has been working out for many, Walcott is a rotation threat, Hazard is worth doing without. Lots of good crystal ball gazing over August.

Pretty much irrelevant as you're never going to play him. Pick a mid who won't drop in value on the off-chance he picks up a season long injury and you have to ditch. Apart from that, what else do you want from your 5th mid?

Everyone using their WC pre-International wee has impacted your price rises. Also with WCs not impacting price changes since last year, making lots of value on International week is a bit of a myth now.

Might not make it immediately but if you pick the right players and hold for a couple of weeks you'll get the rise eventually. That's still using your WC to chase some cash.

FWIW Ayew and Gomis will double rise I reckon (but then again, if you put them in to chase cash you're not gonna take them out I wouldn't have thought given fixtures!)

It's more from a lack of expectation. I find a lot of big names when signed, for one reason or another, don't live up to the hype and expectations of fans. This lad is a prospect, so I'm eager to see what he has that the French seem to like so much.

      1. Somalion
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Who said that he'd be an instant success?

        A couple of points.

        "Poor French league"

        1) PSG knocked out Chelsea in CL

        2) Monaco knocked out Arsenal

        3) Ligue 1 has provided the PL with players such as Gomis, Ayew, Payet to the league. There have been bad ones as well, such as Riviere or Chamakh.

This has nothing to do with Martial, but you're very off about Ligue 1. A typical attitude I see on here regarding foreign leagues.

        1. Somalion
          • 14 Years

Oh, and 9 goals + 4 assists in 1800 league minutes is decent. Not a world beater, but at 19 I wouldn't expect that.

          • 9 Years

You said you are excited about him playing in the PL, which I assumed meant you are excited because you believed instantly he is going to be a good player - sorry if this was wrong 🙂

I stick by the French League being poor - 2 x teams who beat English teams over single two-legged ties doesn't necessarily make a good league. The players you mention all play for "mid-range" PL teams who are all far superior in quality to mid-range French Ligue 1 teams. Watching any French match between two non-"elite" French Ligue 1 teams (regularly shown on BT Sport) and the standard is clearly relatively poor to the PL.

          1. Somalion
            • 14 Years
            8 years, 8 months ago

No not at all, just excited to see what the fuss in the French national camp is about! 😛 He could wind up fecking rubbish!

This is a question of relativity, because the only comparison we get are the top teams. I accept lower down the teams aren't so inspiring, it's a fair comment, but I can't say the league is poor, not German or Spanish standard which is fair. Though I will say Giroud isn't playing for a mid table side 😉 and to be fair to them, Gomis and Ayew have looked inspiring. What I was driving at really was that Ligue 1 can offer some good players to the PL 🙂

      2. Mitchacho

Not saying he's the next Henry, but I dare say Martial scored more last season than Henry did at a similar age before heading to Juve. *shrug* I guess they see something. It's fine to doubt but many seem to have written him off already. Could be a part of a long-term plan to replace Rooney.

        1. Somalion
          • 14 Years

I agree with this. He has been written of by many already having not seen him play at all which I think is ludicrous. The price was far too high, but it has nothing to do with how he'll do in the PL, something a lot of folks don't seem to understand.

Theo. Assuming everyone is healthy, he is likely to get more game time out of all the other players. I think Bony comes close too.

    7. Somalion
      • 14 Years

      Depends on Sturridge's fitness.

Martial will have more minutes than the rest, so if played as a striker he might be able to throw his hat into the ring. I think Falcao and Bony are injury contingent. Theo is a garbage striker... But if they give him minutes on the wing he could do great.

As it stands, with all the others benched or injured, I'll say Martial by virtue of much more gametime.

      Your defense is expensive. That's a 4-4-2/4-3-3?

        No, it's obviously 3-4-3. 😕

3 premium defenders, 1 playing reserve defender and a 4.0.

Honestly... If one more person asks why Pedro's price has not changed!! 😐

This forum can get very frustrating at times.

No, he was saying he doesn't know I think? Or maybe he just doesn't want to tell?

    New Crowd.

Benteke/Pelle -> Gomis? or save? No other real issues.

    Already own Ayew...

Doesn't feel right shipping someone who just got you 9 pts. 🙁

Better than shipping them the week before.

Was pondering upon it too, but with an in-form Tadic and Mané behind him, I think he has as much of a decent chance than any other star strikers!

Won't be playing a 10 man Norwich at home every week.

May be true but Tekkers' fixtures will give him a stay of execution in many cases.

            Benteke to Gomis

Liverpool can barely find the net and are now missing both Henderson and Coutinhio

    WC1 played, RMT please!

    Fabianski / Lindegaard
Cedric, Sagna, Francis / Richards, Ward
Ayew, Payet, Pedro, Sterling / Shaq
    Kun, Wilson, Gomis

Flappy, Sterling, Cedric and Richards have stayed in through the WC. 0.1m ITB.

Considering the costs of a blanking Aguero versus cheaper midfield options, whether to follow on and add Mahrez, how much supply Wilson will be getting without Max and Payet & Gomis vs. Sakho & 8.5.
