Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – International Round Up

Kevin de Bruyne guides Belgium to victory with a goal and assist against Bosnia. Eden Hazard and Marouane Fellaini also find the net for the Red Devils. Graziano Pelle and Gylfi Sigurdsson clinch wins for Italy and Iceland, whilst Tottenham new boy Son Heung-min scores three times as South Korea hammer rank outsiders Laos.

Son Bags hat-trick

Son Heung-min struck three times as South Korea pummelled minnows Laos (FIFA ranking: 174) in an 8-0 victory. Tottenham Hotspur’s big-money signing hopes that yesterday’s showing will afford him a confidence boost ahead of a potential league debut next Gameweek:

“Even against underdogs like Laos, it’s never easy to score even one goal. I am happy I helped the team win. It’s good to build my confidence back up before joining Spurs.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Tottenham are sitting on just three points after four matches – with only three goals to their name – Son has a great chance of being inserted into their starting XI for a trip to Sunderland. The north London club have fashioned their fair share of shooting opportunities – ranking joint-first for big chances (nine) and fourth for shots on target (23) – yet lack that clinical touch in the final third. Classified as a forward in the Fantasy Premier League, Son (8.0) proved to be a lethal finisher in the previous campaign – tallying 17 in all competitions – and could serve as the perfect foil to Harry Kane, though given that he’s likely to be fielded in the attacking midfield three slots, his domestic appeal looks limited.

Saints Duo in the Goals

Italy edged past Malta 1-0 in their Euro 2016 qualifier courtesy of a close-range header from Southampton frontman Graziano Pelle. Elsewhere in the Saints camp, centre-half Maya Yoshida rifled home his fifth goal for Japan in a 3-0 win over Cambodia, executing a driven 20-yard strike to double the hosts’ advantage in the first half.

The Scout Says: Over 110,000 Fantasy managers shipped out Pelle prior to the last two Gameweeks, yet his remaining 12.6% ownership will be quietly confident in their decision to retain the Italian’s services. Pelle rewarded their patience with a nine-point haul (one goal and assist) in the 3-0 win over Norwich and looks to be building some momentum ahead of a road tie against West Bromwich Albion. Yoshida, meanwhile, has started all four Gameweeks so far for the St Mary’s side and helped them register back-to-back clean sheets in the last couple of fixtures. Despite having seen off the competition from Steven Caulker, it seems likely that new signing Virgil van Dijk (5.5) will displace the Japan international from the starting line-up sooner rather than later. The £13 million centre-back amassed a staggering 10 goals in 58 appearances last term, displaying an aerial and free-kick prowess that makes him an exciting Fantasy prospect. Van Dijk is expected to partner Jose Fonte in the back-four, though Yoshida could remain in the picture if Koeman opts for the three-man backline he rolled out at Watford in Gameweek 3.

Fellaini Sparks Comeback

Following Edin Dzeko’s headed goal, Marouane Fellaini restored parity just eight minutes later as Belgium went on to record a 3-1 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The Scout Says: Having served out his three-match domestic suspension, Fellaini was afforded a 14-minute cameo against Swansea City last Gameweek. Ander Herrera was given the nod in the number ten berth at the Liberty though it remains to be seen if he’ll remain ahead of Fellaini next time out now that the Belgian is closer to peak fitness – manager Louis van Gaal previously revealed that he prefers a second striker in “the hole”, asserting that Herrera is more suited to a deep-lying midfield role. The arrival of new boy Anthony Martial increases Van Gaal’s dilemma, though. Much depends on whether the United boss feels the youngster is ready to start – having admitted the new signing needs time to settle – but the Frenchman’s introduction would surely mean bench-warming duties for Fellaini, with either Wayne Rooney or Juan Mata fielded in the central support berth, depending on where Martial is utilised.

Sigurdsson Spot-Kick Seals it for Iceland

Gylfi Sigurdsson converted from the penalty spot to steer Iceland to a shock 1-0 victory over a floundering Netherlands outfit.

The Scout Says: The prime route into the Swans’ midfield last term, Sigurdsson (one assist) has been surpassed by new recruit Andre Ayew (three goals and one assist) in these early stages, with the latter coming in 0.2 cheaper than the Icelandic talisman. Nonetheless, Sigurdsson’s underlying stats suggest that further attacking returns are right around the corner – he ranks joint-fourth for goal attempts (13) among all midfielders this season and has also produced eight key passes. Ultimately, though, the fact that Ayew boasts six more shots inside the box (10) than Sigurdsson (four) and has totted up nearly double the volume of penalty-box touches (17 compared to nine) illustrates his superior goal threat at present, rendering him a stronger pick at that price bracket.

De Bruyne Sparkles in Belgium Victory

Kevin de Bruyne gave Fantasy managers food for thought with a goal and assist in his latest run-out for Belgium.

The Scout Says: Weighing in at 10.0, De Bruyne returns to the Premier League as the fourth-priciest midfielder, just 0.2 below teammate David Silva (10.2). The former Chelsea player faces a tough task trying to match the supreme attacking potential of Silva this term; yet as the most prolific assist-maker (21) across the top five European leagues in the previous campaign, De Bruyne certainly harbours the potential to be a big-hitter. Those Fantasy managers already in possession of Sky Blues midfielders will be content with their acquisition at present, but there’s certainly scope for De Bruyne to showcase his talents during an excellent quintet of upcoming fixtures (cry, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU), presenting us with a very viable route into Man City’s flourishing attack.

Hazard Opens Account for Season

Eden Hazard ensured that Belgium claimed all three points in their Euro 2016 qualifier with a penalty 12 minutes from time.

The Scout Says: Priced at 11.5 from the outset, Hazard has failed to justify his hefty valuation over the opening four Gameweeks. Consequently, over 450,000 managers cashed in on the 2014/15 PFA Player of the Year leading up to Gameweek 4, leaving him at a relatively modest 36% ownership. That’s hardly surprising given that Hazard has notched just four shots at goal in as many starts, which is on par with the deep-lying Nemanja Matic and three fewer than Pedro – who’s only been at the club for two weeks. On a more positive note, the Chelsea wide man places third among the league’s full roster of midfielders for key passes (13), yet he may struggle to exert that same influence as the Blues embark on a testing pair of fixtures (eve, ARS) after the international break. Another blank at Goodison and the exodus is bound to pick up, particularly with the likes of league leaders Man City furnishing us with so many strong premium midfield options ahead of their kind schedule.

This feeling is not exclusive to Liverpool supporters, I too wish to see certain teams failing.

But at the same time we all want to watch good exciting football, so it's a mixed blessing when a team like Chelsea suddenly start to look average...

Oh of course, I realise that. My reply was badly worded. I mentioned being a Liverpool because I was going to (and changed my mind) name those teams whose success would never bring me joy.

But I could never take a step back and impartially enjoy Man Utd playing great football. Just my opinion, but I'm sure plenty would agree.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it worth wasting a transfer?

How often do we make a transfer only to see the player we draft in blank, while the one that is ditched score handsomely? Happens quite a lot and so often I wish I hadn't bothered using a transfer at all.

This week I find myself in the odd position of having two free transfers but, baring any international injuries, not wanting to make any changes. As odd as it seems I'm actually considering wasting it rather than draft out a player with good form or fixtures, or both just for the sake of it.

Payet for example is going nowhere with Newcastle up next. Diouf can sit on the bench as looking at gwks 6-11 he looks a great option. What about Kompany to Kolarov? I could do that, but it seems such a nothing move just to save .5 or so.

Has anyone else ever not used a transfer? Or have you wished you had wasted it due to a terrible transfer.

this year I have the plan to not use transfers just cause I have them and have faith in my original picks, an anti-tinker policy so to speak.
With the bad start for the big guns and couple of poor choices it has forced my hand but I think I will be on track again from next week.
It is very easy to look too much into your squad to try and justify making a transfer when you really don't need to.

But you can look at next 4GW, and Wilson will have a better fixtures. Then you always can swap to Diouf back and profit on Wilson's price rises (but you already lost 0.1 Wilson's rise). And next week you also can do Payet -> Shaqiri to have Stoke if you want especially if Payet blanksand Shaqiri shines.

Definitely okay to waste a transfer.

That being said I'm sure you're mighty tempted to do Kompany to Kolarov.

I did the same move last week with only 1 FT, just for the attacking potential and the 0.5m saved. This week I'm making no transfers so will be up to 2.

I'd do Kompany to Kolarov, Kolarov looks the better option at the moment and is cheaper. I don't think it is a nothing move; it's not one I'd recommend with 1FT but if there really is nothing else you want to do then I think it's wise.

1 FT can always go either way - it's the nature of the game. However, 2 FTs just gives you that many more possibilities that can improve your team in a big way. Alot of times, it's something you don't see right now but is there...you just have to dig deeper.

Even with 2 FTs and apparently nothing worth doing, I would still use 1 FT to fix a 4th defender with the following GW in mind, and set yourself up nicely for 2 FTs to really have a good at the following GW.

I must admit, as some others have pointed out. Kompany to Kolorov is an upgrade never mind the 0.5m saving making the following week more flexible. Kompany has started well with goals but he's no Vidic or Vermaelen in terms of consistent goal threat.Kompany may well score the winner against Palace but while Vinnie & Alex both start then the Serb trumps the scoring for bonus & attacking points on a long term average easily IMO.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.

The only thing to weigh up is sideways transfers to save cash. (Komp to Kola).

No point in using a transfer just for the sake of it, your team looks good.

That being said if no players get injured Kompany to Kolarov could be useful if you're considering getting upgrading Hoolahan to Sako soon?

      Very interesting question.
I've just had a look at your squad and was very pleased to see that I am currently just above you!
I'm trying very hard not to make extra transfers this season, having pulled the trigger too many times in previous seasons. But had never considered not using one - I guess it depends on your squad. I wish I had ever got to a point where my squad was so strong I could 'waste a transfer'!

I think you're right that you don't need to do any changes, especially if you've settled on your keeper rotation and Payet/Diouf (plenty of people would be looking to get rid of Payet for example and Wilson is still better value than Diouf).
If you're happy with your squad then the important thing is to keep two for the following week which is what you'll be doing.

      Bit late, but..
Kompany to Kolarov looks obvious. Kolarov will outscore Kompany over the next 6-8 gameweeks, and it frees up cash which you can use to get a keeper more likely to keep clean sheets than Butland and Ruddy.

Strange given your rank and last weeks points that you don't want to make any changes. Can see some upgrades in the following areas:

Ruddy to Krul or another 4.5 that can keep clean sheets
      Diouf to Wilson
      Kompany to Kolorov
Morgan to another 4.5 that can keep clean sheets

This has only ever happened to me once. Soon after a wildcard (so i'm assuming you have recently used yours) but keepers and fifth defenders are the people you might want to deal with in this situation

I let a lot of transfers waste last season (I think I did it at least three times). I even did it in back to back weeks and ended up with a rank inside the top 2k. It felt very unproductive and really I could've switched my non playing 4.0 goalkeeper to another 4.0 non playing goalkeeper just for the lols. But sometimes you just gotta have faith in your players and think 'damn, my fantasy team is just too good right now, log off, and watch the points roll in'.

Pedro was in my team but I'm thinking of downgrading him to maybe Payet and then extra funds to build the defence

        Current WC team:

        Butland / McCarthy

        Kolarov / Gomez / Bellerin / Cedric / Huth

        PEDRO / Sanchez / Yaya / Mahrez / Sinclair

        Wilson / Aguero / Gomis

Was thinking of Huth to Ward but then I have Palace keeper and defender. Cedric is quite costly but he has done well so far, whips in the crosses and gets bonus points so I think he's not worth getting rid of.

I don't know if this really makes much sense, but my thinking has always been that a defender can lose points easily through the mistakes of others, whereas a striker makes his own luck and therefore points are risked less when playing a more attacking formation.

Final repost as too much people is slamming my brilliant idea 😀

Not sure if this was discussed somewhere sometime, but this is something which bothers me - price rises/drops and Wild Cards.

I believe that mojority of fantasy players just hit the WC button after the GW which gives them a week (or two in case od Int break) to tinker with their teams. Some common knowledge is that when on WC, bringing or droping players from your team do not influence overall tresholds needed for player price changes. Therefore your moves when on WC do not influence player prices. But in case you are on a WC you WANT your moves to influence player price changes (one tranfer is spit in the sea, I know, but still). So simply you want your players which you bring in to rise and players you drop to go down to make it harder for your opponents.

Due to all this I strongly believe that its better to do your transfers for the whole week like on WC, but actually hit the WC button just before the deadline to erase all the hits you have taken through the week. If this will be followed by enough players I strongly believe that it will possitively influence the price rises(drops) during the GWs where many players WC.

So basically take hits through the week and hit the WC button just before the deadline

Highly unlikely that enough people will see this post first of all to make a difference. Secondly the amount who see it and also want to take part will be minimal.

Lastly - it's not worth the risk of missing hitting the wildcard button by the end of the week.

Let's be fair the organisers changed the price rise rules for a reason. Clearly they felt managers who were milking the international week, for example, for huge team value benefit were getting an excessive advantage over other players, and have therefore made a change.

You should be good enough to beat your opponents by picking a better team, and adjusting to the emerging form as the season unfolds.

You can still amass plenty of team value. You just can't get an excessive advantage over other players who don't play the market.

Years of painful lessons has left me too also contemplating letting an FT slide into the abyss. Decisive patience! Even this week, the like's of Mane, Pelle and Sterling have all come to the fore.

If I had a choice I'd raise some money to buy yourself a decent third striker, but if you insist. I would prefer Graham over Watmore.

He was extremely unlucky to get 2 injuries, the second only weeks after coming back into the first team.

Interesting that he is still ahead of Sagna in the national team.

      1. RustyBz
        • 9 Years

Especially with Sagna starting the season so well, and Debuchy having a mare v West Ham

      2. Doolittle
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

He was unlucky, but if you get an injury, and your replacement comes in and, frankly, looks a better player than you, why do you have the right to complain to the press and say you were thinking about leaving? It's his job to win his place back, he got a game this season and was rubbish. Fair enough, that may be because he's been out for a long time, but it would be extremely unfair for Wenger to drop Bellerin just because Debuchy wants to play.

        1. RustyBz
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

He definitely doesn't have the right to complain. Bellerin won that slot fair and square, but my point is that I understand his frustration. At 30 years of age and finally getting your break in a big team he's found himself now with a likely "backwards step" in his career

        2. Somalion
          • 14 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

I'm agreed with you Doolittle, though he may wonder why they bought him when Bellerin is so good. They bought Chambers who would be fine as a back up to him, so perhaps he feels some how deceived. That isn't the right way to feel, of course, I just wonder if that's the case.

Very bitter indeed! I suppose when he finally got a move to a big club he thought he'd be the undisputed RB as at the time they didn't have much going there. One injury and Bellerin comes out playing fantastically and he's now lost his spot.

Gutting really, especially if it's affecting his france slot with Euros coming up. Struggling to see what other big clubs would take him...

The thing with Bellerin is that he has so much speed, when he does mess up he can still get back to sort it.

Who would you rather play against Montero for example? Bellerin every time.

        1. RustyBz
          • 9 Years

For sure. Bellerin is by far the better option, he's only 20.

      2. Doolittle
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, it must be tough, and he would have been well within his rights to move if an opportunity arose, but why come out and complain about Bellerin being chosen? You're still at Arsenal, get your head down and win your place back.

This. He can't just be mardy because someone his better than him. Why would he be chosen if he's not the best, which he isn't. He is talking like he is a world class footballer such as Messi who has early the right to be first choice over any other footballer. The fact is with Hector & Callum Arsenal should cash in on Debuchy.

    Interesting bit from Sky

Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says he turned down an extremely lucrative offer for forward Thomas Muller this summer, although did not disclose details on where the bid came from.

With both Man Utd and Real Madrid linked with the player throughout the British and Spanish press, the Bundesliga champions refused to sell Muller during the transfer window.

"I'm talking about figures which were very high indeed. If I were a bank manager then I would have had to accept it. But as a football club we allowed ourselves to close the door on it, and this door is remaining closed. I can promise that to everybody."
