The Community Round Up

It’s been four Gameweeks to forget for many Fantasy managers, who have been left shell shocked by failed captaincy choices and reliable home wins drying up. There was plenty of advice on beating the start of the season blues from our community writers and hot topic posters during this international break, with differentials, deadline day recruits and alternative formations all in the frame to turn around our seasons. We also delve into some creative underlying statistics in our Members tables as well as catch up on the latest news from some of our Community tournaments.

The Community Articles

One key tactic to turning around what has been a lacklustre Fantasy campaign for many is to take risks with the captaincy. Jose’s Magic Omelette’s regular alternative captaincy options articles are a good way to assess such punts. His latest piece takes a look ahead to some of Gameweek 5’s armband mavericks and glances back to see how his differentials fared in Gameweek 4.

Another regular community article that offers a different way of selecting captains is Your Mum’s Athletic’s What the Bookies Say series, which uses bookmakers odds to help predict the coming Gameweek’s scorelines. As this recap on his Gameweek 4 predictions shows, the high number of red cards handed out made this a particular difficult set of fixtures to assess.

The international break offers a chance for the community to reflect on their squads and captaincy strategy in great detail. Bowstring the Carp was on hand to look back on what we can learn from August’s fixtures. Meanwhile, Jose’s Magic Omelette was back again to show how the international break can also present a good profit making opportunity, especially for those wildcarding.

With form so far trumping fixtures, Pooodle offers some sound advice on the best times to either stick or twist regarding underperforming stars.

Finally, if you have a spare few minutes please do take some time to cast your vote for your favourite community article during August. The winning writer will receive a £20 Amazon voucher and will be announced in next week’s Community Round Up.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

There were further tips on turning around the fortunes of Fantasy managers in our hot topics. Those answering our plea for help included Baines on Toast, who urges patience with misfiring heavy hitters such as Alexis Sanchez, while Ryan recommends going five at the back, given the large amount of high scoring defenders this season. As Bowstring the Carp’s latest round up of FPL bonus allocation shows, full backs, in particular, look very attractive as a source of reliable points.

Another set of player that could help the community march up the rankings are those who joined new clubs at the end of the summer transfer window. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne was among those mentioned in our discussion on how the summer arrivals and those with new clubs may impact on our teams.

There is certainly an appetite for trying something different to achieve Fantasy success, with Weasel Boy amongst those who has had enough of heavy hitters – he even went as far as to say that Sergio Aguero is killing his Fantasy team. He is not alone, with the Manchester City striker also features in Belsunz’s hot topic on the most disappointing players so far list, which also includes Chelsea’s lacklustre defence.

Could our reliance on cheap defenders and players such as Aguero be costing our community vital Fantasy points? Ruth NZ certainly thinks so in his discussion on the how this tried and test rigid team structure is failing so spectacularly this season.

For those who have had a poor start, our latest Rough with the Smooth article will offer some comfort, as it shows that even the number one manager in our Hall of Fame has had a shocker. Despite being another to have a poor start, I find myself in the rare position of not wanting to use either of my two free transfers ahead of Gameweek 5. Our subsequent discussion on the issue revealed that wasting a transfer may even offer a significant, surprise boost in rankings.

In FPL’s sister game Ultimate Fantasy Premier League the transfer window remains open until September 12. To help make the right decisions on who to draft in Andy85wsm offered an invaluable list of those teams playing on Matchday 2 and 3, offering a crucial group of players that increase managers’ chances of correcting first match day blunders.

For those wanting to catch up on how their players are performing while away on international duty Demi has provided this round up of their travels ahead of Gameweek 5.

The Members Tables

Mark has created this handy table looking at the most creative teams each Gameweek. The team topping Gameweek 4’s table will come as some surprise given the scoreline. My goals imminent table has now been updated to show the players that are due a goal or two. This will offer some crumb of comfort to those keeping faith in their heavy hitters. While Jaffalicious has produced a pair of team tables, looking a the best attacks and defences.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The results of qualifying round 2 of Jaffalicious’s FFS UEFA Champions League themed tournament are now in, with Lucy, Dogba, Irish Madrista and Rodellegabomb among those to progress.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing the safety score was 29, which saw 165 players depart and 2,427 remain.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Coates looks like falling tonight. Can't take anymore falls. Got 1ft and 0.5m itb. Any objections to Coates to Johnny Evans?

He will fall eventually. Want to get rid anyway as he's not playing. Even if he did play I'd be lucky to avoid minus points. Other concern was Mings but poor lad is out and his Net Transfer Target is about -50. I'll deal with him later

Only protected when the flag goes to fit.
More transfers out gives casuals protection if they don't notice the flag.

I'm a simpleton tbh. I simply think WBA will keep the most CS for the next 10 or so weeks which is when I'm looking to WC. Will a player priced less than 4.9m (except Gomez) keep more CS?

        - Puncheon takes set-pieces despite Cabaye being the main taker
        - Plays in the number 10 role
        - The last 4 games he is the only one that has not been subbed out of the 4
        - Second cheapest

        Key:

The 4 - Cabaye, Sako, Puncheon, Bolasie

Because Speroni is scheduled to be back within the next 2 weeks according to the 'Injuries' section and I already have Puncheon so I'm not keen on double Palace and because I have no City mid as I can't afford one as I have Pedro & Sanchez.

One thing I dont understand this season is how popular Butland is and a lot of teams I see has a rotational 4.5 defender in the third spot.

Apart from Myhill I cant see any decent 4.5 gk or defenders that have good clean sheet potential.

Bellerin is my third choice defender yet I see people giving rave reviews to teams with Francis, Muniesta, Huth, Coates etc who all havent had a clean sheet so far if I am not mistaken.

The reason I have noticed this is because my defence of Darmian, Kolorov and Bellerin has probably scored more points than my entire attack so far.

Spend that extra míllion on a decent defender is what I would do.

He's on my watchlist. Planning to get him in for Ozil GW6. Don't know if I'll keep him till 10 but I want Liverpool attacking coverage for GW6-7 and I'm not touching my front 3 (Aguero, Gomis, Diouf) for a while barring injury so that rules out Benteke. All the better if Coutinho drops to 8.0 or 7.9 before GW6.

Still can't decide. 2 FTs. Already posted but want some more opinions.

    A) Pelle to Wilson/Gomis

    B) Pelle and Targett to Wilson and Bellerin/Cresswell

    C) Pelle and Hoolahan to Wilson and Mahrez to start playing a 3-5-2

    D) Richards to Watford defender and keep Pelle/Targett for one more week.

    D) Something else

    My team:

    Hart
    Darmian / Williams / Targett
    Sanchez (C) / Payet / Toure / Ayew
    Pelle / Aguero / Diouf

    McCarthy -- Hoolahan, Richards, Muniesa

Central still, I suspect the team will similar to when Sturridge and Saurez was playing with Sterling, all three we interchangeable, Sturridge played right in some formations

                  A Sturridge Coutinho Firmino
                  ---------Benteke-------
B Diamond, Coutinho behind Sturridge and Benteke

C 3 up front then on left

                  But overall a central roll.

Sturridge never plays on the left to begin with. Therefore, he will play on the right, moving Firmino central in the No.10 role. Coutinho then shifted to the left wing. Correct? Which means he's not central anymore! You can forget Firmino playing on the left.

Coutinho is weak on the left of the three, he's effective in the central role. Is he still now a good FPL player to have on the left?

Coutinho will play central this season, Firmino will play left he can play all four pos comfortably, so Rodgers want put Coutinho in his worst pos, he will want the best out of Coutinho.

Firmino plays on the left? he rarely plays there! he's being played out of position atm by being played on the right! He's best utilised in a No.10 role. This is where he was most successful for Hoffenheim. He was not purchased to play out of position on the left!!!

Well this remains to been seen because for me Coutinho is best out two in the central pos, also why isn't Firmino playing Central now and Coutinho on right?

What football fans think is a player's best position is different to what Rodgers thinks. He's playing right sided atm to fit all the players into the system. When Sturridge returns, Firmino will take up the central role. Coutinho pushed to the left. This is the only way to fit these players into the system.

That is circumstantial. As i said in my above post, he's played these players thus far, in those positions to accommodate them and the formation. Sturridge returns in October, inevitably, player positions will change again.

As a Liverpool fan you should know best that Rodgers is known to play players out of position. For example, Milner is not a central midfielder, however, Rodgers feels he is. There are multitude of examples where Rodgers has/is playing players out of position to accommodate his system.

Gradel out must affect Wilson quite negatively? Who is must likely to play in Gradel's place?

I really have a feeling this will be like when Vargas was out for QPR last season and affected Austin massively.

Anyone thinking of going without Wilson because of the Gradel situation?

Stoke always concede, CP on form @home. Stoke really haven't hit the ground running and the gunners will score a couple if not more. A straight forward decision for me.

when it is this close a decision on keepers I always take a leftfield approach and look at the keeper most likely to save a penalty, which I reckon is McCarthy with Cazorla being awesome at pens.

Coutinho may finally be a good pick. He looks like he's upped his game a touch and now has the feel of the main man.

Yep, and he loves a shot. GW6 and 7 are plum home fixtures too, can't go wrong!

I have an ADHD friend, 27. Is it okay to hit him when he burns a friend with a cigarette?

But I like the guy he's burning, he's done nothing wrong. The guy with ADHD is a massive w*nker though.

    Thoughts plz? Which transfer?

    A) Toby to Francis now or 1/2 ft next week
    B) Sanchez to Pedro next Gwk 1/2 ft next week

    2ft would Mane to Coutinho.

Ok I will have 2ft next if I save for Either Toby to Francis or Sanchez to Pedro plus 2nd ft Mane to Coutinho, but do I make any of the options this Gwk?

Depends on fixtures! Does any player have a way better fixture than the one you want to Sell, also Prodl is better than Francis

Erm probably not the only transfer this week would Toby out but he Sun, but would you do A Toby to Francis/ Prodl or Sanchez to Pedro next Gwk? Definitely doing Mane to Coutinho tho aswel.

To be honest I think doing either transfer would be bad for the team looking at the next week, but you should do 1 for the long run, I say so get Pedro because he will Rise lots
