Pre-Season

Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-Up

With four Premier League sides – Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Swansea and West Brom – all in action over the next few hours, we roll out a first re-cap of the summer fixtures to date this evening.

Listed below is a match by match breakdown of all the encounters so far, with details of goals, assists and line-ups.

We’ll be publishing a round-up of the latest results tomorrow, while all the pre-season scores, scout notes and form players are being captured and collated in our Pre-Season Section.

Carolina RailHawks 2 West Ham 2

The Hammers’ brief American tour ended in the early hours of this morning with no wins, a couple of goals and a 40-minute bad weather delay as their sights now turn to their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round first leg on July 28.

Skipper Winston Reid (who managed a goal at both ends of the pitch) was teed up for the Hammers’ first by Andy Carroll before the big Geordie put his side ahead thanks to a cross from new wide man Sofiane Feghouli.

Slaven Bilic rang the changes, with nine players swapped from the 46th minute onwards, and the lack of continuity, hot and humid conditions and the threat of further thunderstorms conspired to produce a second-half of little quality or incident – on the pitch, at least.

Although Sam Byram started both matches at right-back, it’s worth noting that Michail Antonio did not fly out for the US tour due to the recent birth of his child.

West Ham XI: Adrian (Spiegel 46), Byram (Makasi 63), Reid (Henry 63), Burke (Rice 63), Cresswell (Page 46), Obiang (Poyet 63), Noble, Feghouli (Quina 63), Samuelsen, Lanzini (Browne 63), Carroll (Martinez 46).

Seattle Sounders 3 West Ham 0

Slaven Bilic used no fewer than 21 players to start the club’s two-match tour of America on July 5, handing debuts to new signings Sofiane Feghouli and Havard Nordtveit, as well as youngsters Antonio Martinez and Domingos Quina.

Former Valencia star Feghouli caught the eye and quickly formed a partnership with another summer signing (from the same Spanish club), Toni Martinez, when the pair came on at half-time. The latter is expected to be eased into English football through the Hammers’ development squad.

In addition to the above-mentioned Antonio, Bilic is having to make do without star midfielder Dmitri Payet and defenders James Collins and Angelo Ogbonna as the trio rest up after their Euro 2016 campaigns. A fourth international, Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph, is likely to leave the club in search of regular first team football, whilst rumoured Sunderland target, Diafra Sakho, stayed behind in London due to a back problem.

West Ham XI: Adrian (Spiegel 46), Byram (Feghouli 46), Page, (Cresswell 46), Reid (Henry 46), Rice (Burke 46), Poyet (Nordtveit 46), Noble (Obiang 46), Browne (Quina 46), Samuelsen (Lanzini 46), Makasi, Carroll (Martinez 46).

Tranmere Rovers 0 Liverpool 1

A second-half strike from Danny Ings earned Liverpool victory in the first of a busy pre-season campaign which will also take in trips to America and Germany.

In a match that took place last Friday, Ings captained a completely changed second-half Liverpool line-up, firing home after good work from Academy player Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Coach Jurgen Klopp handed debuts to new signings Sadio Mane, Joel Matip and Loris Karius in the first period and had to delve deep into the club’s playing resources as a dozen internationals are yet to return to training following Euro 2016 duties.

Liverpool XI: First half: Karius; Flanagan, Matip, Lovren, Smith; Lucas, Brannagan, Ejaria; Kent, Mane, Firmino.

Liverpool XI: Second half: Bogdan, Randall, Ilori, Wisdom, Moreno; Stewart, Chirivella, Alexander-Arnold; Markovic, Woodburn, Ings.

York City 0 Middlesbrough 6

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka was another to field 22 players as his newly-promoted side swept aside York City last Saturday.

Karanka was without new signings Victor Valdes, Bernardo Espinosa and Viktor Fischer and promotion winners Ben Gibson and Grant Leadbitter, but he will have been encouraged by the second-half performance of January capture Jordan Rhodes, who hit two goals in a lively showing.

David Nugent and Adam Reach supplied a goal and assist apiece, whilst wide man Albert Adomah also managed to get his name on the scoresheet.

Middlesbrough XI: First half: Mejias, Nsue, Baptiste, Morris, Husband (Friend 27), Pattisom, Forshaw, Adomah, De Sart, De Pena, Nugent.

Middlesbrough XI: Second half: Konstantopoulos, Halliday, Jackson, McGhee, Friend, Clayton, de Roon, Carayol, Downing, Reach, Rhodes.

Woking 1 Watford 1

New Watford boss Walter Mazzarro tried out a 3-5-2 formation for the Hornets’ first friendly of pre-season on Sunday, shifting to a flat back-four just after the hour mark.

Dutch winger Steven Berghuis opened the scoring midway through the first-half with a deflected strike (courtesy of an Ikechi Anya assist) as Mazzarro tinkered with both formation and personnel, giving new signings Abdoulaye Doucoure, Jerome Sinclair and Isaac Success debuts after the break.

One notable absentee was club captain Troy Deeney, who was left out as a precaution after sustaining a slight knock in training, while Almen Abdi wasn’t involved due to sickness.

Watford XI: Gomes (Arlauskis, HT); Nyom, Britos (Rowan, 85), Hoban (Success, 67); Amrabat (Holebas, 59), Capoue (Guedioura, HT), Suarez (Watson, HT), Berghuis (Doucoure, HT), Anya; Ighalo (Sinclair, HT), Vydra (Oulare, HT).

A question of team construction - how do you do it?

Do you have must have players you'll have in your team whatever the price.
Or do you start with the obvious bargains and start from there.
Or start the fixtures to rule out certain teams?
    Or something else?

    (Yes I'm bored waiting too)

I tend to have the same cycle of events every year:

Fixtures first to decide teams that need stocking up on
Then must haves from those teams regardless of price (Aguero, Hazard etc)
Then bargains and punts around those must haves
      ....
Then change all must haves to cheaper alternatives so bargains and punts can be upgraded (Aguero to Silva or Hazard to Oscar etc)

Interesting all. I go for the big hitters I think are the best value given price and opening run of fixtures, then fill based on good rotations from there

Usually the 1st and third ones.

This time I'm going to trial the second one. Feel like I always miss out on the bargains early doors and then try and play catch up by avoiding them

      Honest answer alert.

Like 99% of the people on here, I pick my original team based on, well, it doesn't matter really, because as soon as I see an RMT on here that looks better, I change it to the basis of that. and then there are multiple iterations from there. I'm not proud of this approach, and in the back of my mind I'm sure I'll try not to use it this season - but I think I'm kidding myself.

That's what the sites is for though in a way. There are better players than me so considering g their RMT and further comments makes sense to me

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 14 Years
          7 years, 10 months ago

Absolutely. If no RMT's were posted my squad would be pretty poor - but I'm not sure my rank would be any worse because a hell of a lot of other players would have poor squads also. That's one reason why I question those who say the game is about 80% 'skill' - maybe they should run an experiment and not look at FFS or equivalent sites all season - then we'll see how 'skilful' they really are.

i usually start with some big hitters then fill in with some new signings i like the look of and fodder to fill the gaps then come in here and by the time i have read 3 pages of rmt and people opinions on which players are waste of time.i usually leave with a totally new team that i didn't really want

    8. Jøssy ⭐

I'll have some bankers that go in, Aguero for example (he's the only one on that list this year).

I'll have a price structure in mind:

      4.5 - 4.5
      6 - 5.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5
      10 - 8.5 - 7.5 - 6.5 - 5
      13 - 9 - 6.5

Then I will scan down the price list, and I'll pick the best players to fit each of the price points. I'll look for players who I think are lower priced than I believe they should be and try to find some bargains.

Then I'll just play and tweak until I find the best possible squad.

Then the Prem kicks off and I cry about how crap my team is on Monday. 🙂

My first dalliance with FF was a work competition that my manager used to organise, based on the Telegraph rules and scoring, and he used to input every players weekly score into a spreadsheet each week and update our mini-league.

That was back in 97/98. They were the days...

I have checked this and there was a half-season when they first launched and it begun mid-season (2002/03 iirc). I was unaware of it that year, but I was involved the following year and every year since.

          Love this game!! 😀

Agreed Jossy, cracking concept in so many ways.......

My slight fear, with everyday that goes by with no launch is that FPL have fiddled with their tried & tested format/design/interface/other geeky terms....I hope not, but it is a concern.

UEFA CL fantasy completely ruined their game, with over enthusiastic redesign, and sounds like Sky Sports have also done this now....

Ahhhh, I'm hopeful that they've not spoiled the enjoyability of the game, but I'm concerned it's causing a delayed launch.

He is still one of the best players in the league imo. Conte knows that. Would work really well with Kante imo. Both can make life hard for the oppo (especially Kante) and know how to play with the ball(especially Matic).

Having experienced FPL for 4 seasons coupled with this site, I have found the weaknesses in my game. My TV is always really low. It started happening when I became a little overcautious about my transfers, I used to get players or get rid of them after heavy fall in prices over the week. It wasn't the same in my first season and it was the best season in these 4 years by a mile!

Have you lot found out any weaknesses in your games?

    1. Captain Scarlet

My main weakness would be taking -4 hits and 'gambling', rather than showing faith in who I have. I would generally always score better had I not removed a player, at least for that one week.

      Good question, AK.

I'm always analysing my game so perhaps overthinking it is a weakness. There are times when I need to be a little more adventurous with my picks esp the captaincy armband.

I have had success with a season on hits (plus 45 transfers) and success with minimal hits (only 4/5 last year).

Incidentally, TV never ever bothers me. Make the right transfers and they will take care of TV for you.

      Have a great season 🙂

I avoid obvious picks that are getting consistent returns if I missed out on them early doors and try to claw the points back through a variety of differentials and weird decisions.

Season-long it tends to work out okay, as somehow I always manage a surge the last third of the season.

But really need to stop doing it early doors, and then perhaps look at changing it up later on

Don't really have any weaknesses that I don't do consciously.

I take a hit a week and try to do the best I can with that and I don't plan on changing that. I also pick some fairly dodgy picks just because I like to watch them play...and again that will continue.

      I'm not an OR junkie.

I fail to get bandwagons early hoping they will loose their form e.g Vardy, Dele Alli

Too many hits. But I don't intend to stop doing so. I just need to reign them in a little.

And this is a new one in the last couple of years... I've had a lot of good advice on this site, but I need to be careful about taking FFS word as gospel. I've talked myself out of my own gut decisions recently because of the herd mentality.

      probably 2 main ones

overthinking causing me to talk myself out of picks I had originally planned and then they do well (also known as Glen Murray syndrome)

stubbornness I often refuse to buy a player who is highly owned or owned by rivals as I always think they can gain me nothing instead of thinking about what I might lose by not having them

      Good question

I don't watch enough games so have to rely to heavily on stats and 2nd hand opinions.

I'm also too easily swayed by the masses, need to back myself a bit more to break the template. Fine line this one though, potentially I am remembering and rueing the should haves more than celebrating the dodged bullets.

I make up stupid rules for myself that ultimately limit my total freedom of choice.

      Impatience is definitely my issue.

Almost always do transfers on Monday morning at 09:00 and then end up taking a hit on Friday after reading all FFS articles.

On the plus side, my TV is high as a result and I don't tend to miss bandwagons too often.

I have an issue where my team tends to accumulate fewer points than everybody elses...

Besides not being able to finish in the 10k, I'd say my only regular mistake is playing FPL

Aguero - as soon as he had a whiff of form he's in my team

Going to class rather than form ! I would keep big hitters even if they were out of form !

After a long summer without the terminology on here I genuinely read that as your television was too low and proceeded to read the rest of the post wondering why the position of your television would matter.

Van der hoorn likely to be ahead of Fernandez at Swansea?

I thought Fernandez ended the season very well, so likely to continue starting imo

I think so. And maybe even with him in a back 3. One for pre-season monitoring. Note, Williams may miss the start of season due to Euro efforts. So even more likely to at least begin the season. (Great attacking stats, potential low price has him high on my radar.)

Swans will not play a back three

Williams will start the first game with Fernandez £8 million full Argentinian international) as his partner. The Hoorn is back up fodder after Swans released Kyke Bartlett to LUFC on a season loan.

Jordi Amat likely to be first choice CB backup

Not sure if I want to be inside waiting for FPL or outside catching Pokemon. Decisions, decisions...

Pokestops give them to you. It's under the Pokemon screen and swipe left.
