Scout Notes – Champions League – Wednesday

Six-goal mayhem at Celtic Park and a considerably more sedate affair at The Emirates marks an entertaining second night of Champions League football.

Arsenal 2 Basel 0

The Theo Walcott (7.6) renaissance continued apace in a regulation Champions League win for a dominant Arsenal.

The England international hit his fourth and fifth goals of the season, with both assists coming from the equally in-form Alexis Sanchez (11.1).

Arsene Wenger made two changes from the side that humbled Chelsea, with David Ospina (4.9) given his now customary European place and Granit Xhaka (5.3) replacing the injured Francis Coquelin (4.4).

Such was Arsenal’s superiority – they fired in 19 shots to six from 65% possession – the only surprise was that Wenger chose not to give Sanchez some time off ahead of Sunday’s trip to Burnley.

Walcott, who has now scored in three consecutive matches for the first time in three years, was afforded that luxury. He’s starting to look enticing for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers and enjoyed a price rise overnight.

Currently owned by just 4%, he has both form and fixtures on his side – away at Burnley and Sunderland and home to Swansea and Middlesbrough in the next four – before the North London derby in early November.

Post-match, Wenger praised Sanchez’ display as the lone striker:

“At the moment he looks like he has the ingredients to do very well there. He’s getting stronger in every single game”.

While Walcott spoke of the chemistry between him and the Chilean:

“I think the whole team tends to react well and defend well as a unit and clean sheets are going to win games because we’re going to score plenty of goals. That combination between me and Alexis it’s boding well. We seem to sort of know when we play off each other quite well. If he comes short, I go long and we’ve just got a good sort of combinations.”

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal (Gibbs 75), Cazorla, Xhaka, Walcott (Oxlade-Chamberlain), Ozil, Iwobi (Elneny 70), Sanchez.
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Perez, Reine-Adelaide.

Celtic 3 Man City 3

The ‘Battle of Britain’ was a proper tear-up, as Man City came from behind three times to share the spoils in a breathless encounter.

The defending was often either of the last-ditch or the non-existent variety, but both sides attacked and harried with intent from the off.

In the cold light of day though, City will wonder how they didn’t win a match in which they enjoyed 61% possession, out-shot their opponents 24 attempts to nine and conceded a goal from all three of Celtic’s shots on target.

Much of that was down to their defending, with Pep Guardiola’s decision to bench John Stones (5.0) merely serving to expose Aleksandar Kolarov’s (5.9) limitations as a centre-half, the Serbian squarely to blame for the hosts’ third goal.

Gael Clichy (5.4) and Pablo Zabaleta (4.8) were drafted into a defence that looked makeshift and played like it.

The other change involved Nolito (8.9). He came in for the injured Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) and was bright throughout, scoring City’s third equaliser from a Sergio Aguero (13.0) rebound.

The Spaniard is suspended for Sunday’ trip to Spurs, however, so the onus will once again be on David Silva (8.7) and Raheem Sterling (8.6) to provide the attacking threat from midfield.

Both excelled at Celtic, Silva releasing the Englishman to score City’s second, but Sterling looked particularly dangerous throughout and could be the logical next move for FPL managers wanting to offload De Bruyne.

Fernandinho (5.5) was the other City scorer, his second goal of the season coming when he latched on to a mis-hit Kolarov shot.

Stones made it on to the pitch with 27 minutes to go. It would be a major surprise if he’s not on from the start at Tottenham.

Despite losing his perfect record as City’s manager, Guardiola was pleased with City’s resilience, if concerned about their occasional habit of starting slowly.

“It’s okay, it’s one point, we didn’t lose. It will maybe be a good lesson for our future how important it is to start well. But talking about the performance, the guys how they fight, it doesn’t matter the mistakes, they tried until the end to win the game.”

City XI: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Kolarov, Clichy (Stones 73), Fernandinho, Sterling, Gundogan, Silva, Nolito (Fernando 76), Aguero.
Subs not used: Caballero, Sagna, Navas, Sane, Iheanacho.

Resisting Theo for one more week is hard, but I can't do it for a hit ahead of a two week break.

Do we think Aguero's price is still frozen?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is Theo Walcott a perfect example of how bias can influence our decisions.

To some he will always be the injury prone rotation risk.

While to others he is a former Fantasy legend in the form of his life.

Are you impressed enough to get Theo in? Or are you still reluctant?

Or is it more a case of Sanchez is the best option and so there's no need to get Walcott?

as with Liverpool, a double up is not to be sniffed at, 2 teams scoring goals with great fixtures coming up, its a risk but one worth taking, Walcott is clearly affected by confidence so whilst it looks like he has some and is getting picked consistently by wenger his 7.6m price tag is looking very very appealing

I'm very impressed but as a Sanchez owner right now, I'm not sure I want the double, tho I am contemplating Antonio > Cout/Lala/Wally during the break but so much water to flow under the bridge first.

Good move I think, Cazorla looks to be playing even deeper with Zhaka in the team rather than the injured Coquelin. I moved him out for a hit this week, but for a Liv mid not Wally

I'm almost a mix of both...the old 'never go back' mantra applies. It'll never be the same.

I had him for his Newcastle hattrick years ago. I also started with him last year. I don't know who to trust.

If I didn't have Sanchez I would definitely get Walcott.. just can't see it being worthwhile having both & Sanchez is definitely the better option regardless of cost.

Still reluctant, id rather double up on Liverpool players at the moment, Sanchez appears the most nailed on and consistent of the gunners assets so this is where I will stay. However, should I not have already played my wc, id be extremely tempted to double up on both pool and arsenal, Sanchez and Walcott being the favoured two.

I’m thinking about triple up Sanchez + Wally + Monreal for my WC. But when considering Liverpool, I will only have Lallana. Not sure triple Arsenal players is a good idea although they have easy fixtures coming up. I mean Sanchez is definitely a must, but should I get rid of Walcott and double up Coutinho or Firmino with Lallana instead? So I will have double cover up for both Pool and Arsenal. But if I choose to triple up with Wally, the team looks much better as his price is very affordable and help me save extra to strengthen my defence.

I genuinely have no FF biases about Walcott. I don't have him cos I have Sanchez. Maybe I'll double up at some point, maybe not. Who knows? I don't.

I've gone for the Pool double up instead of Sanch + Walcott.

In the very short term, I don't really fancy away to Burnley being a good fixture. I also can't imagine ever captaining one player from the Liverpool lottery, where-as I would certainly be happy to captain Sanchez.

I may go Antonio > Walcott as my next move though.

As things stands now I think Walcott is a better value route into Arsenal attack than Sánchez. He has showb lately that he is matching S with points, and he is full of confidence. Besides S may not start in GW8...

My midfield is made up of Sanchez, Mane, Firmino, Sterling. I'm very interested to double up with Walcott but who should I take out? In last week's WC I had the dilemma of doubling on Arsenal mids or Liverpool mids. Decided on the latter. Another option would be to get Theo for my bench fodder and get Diomande for a 3-5-2. Too many options in midfield!

I was always a non believer in Walcott, would never consider him, even after the weekend. I was thinking of getting in Lallana or Tadic this week but Walcott brace last night has done it for me. Already have Sanchez so doubling up on Arsenal(i never double up) for their great run of fixtures. His price rising was a factor.

Sold Capoue and Remond last night for Walcott and Flecther (WBA) just enough money to do the transfer before the Theo price rise. (-4 hit thou).
No more worrying about missing Capoue points on the bench.

How about the Capoue bias test?
To some he will never be more than a 4.5m player who has done nothing in previous seasons and is an embarrassment when he scores more than 2 or 3 points on their bench, where he will remain till they sell him.
But to others he is a much improved player with a far more attacking role than before and a clinical finish who is well worth a place in our starting elevens, at least as long as he keeps raking in the points.

As to Theo, he has been injury-prone in the past, and has not been nailed on in recent seasons even when fit, but he does appear to have improved this season and become a regular starter.
He is now a strong contender for our 5 man midfields, but not yet essential since there are plenty of good alternatives.

Sanchez is currently the best Arsenal choice, since he is a serious captaincy option when in his best form (as he is at present), and should remain so unless another player (such as De Bruyne or Ibrahimovic) becomes an even stronger captaincy option.

I fear Ramsey will disturb this Arsenal line up when he returns. So Walcott's starts may not be secured in the long run. To me only Sanchez and Ozil look secured among attackers.

I have used my Wildcard and created this:

      Cech
      Williams Stones Bailly
      Sanchez Sterling Redmond Capoue
      Zlatan Aguero(c) Defoe

      Jaku, Evans, Fletcher, Love

      > Any major changes needed?
      > Debating double Arsenal mid (swap Sterling for Wallcott) - Good idea?

        Redmond-Capoue-Fletcher could be beefed up

        Sterling out a bad idea -- he's a top G right now

& I applaud you for Aguero captain. Let no man, woman or beast convince you otherwise

I think next week would have been a better time to wildcard. Now if you go Capoue 4th mid and he doesn't get to scoring positions again and Zlatan blanks you are looking at a hit immediately. I would beef the midfield, consider Rashford instead of Zlatan. get some Liverpoll too.

I think it's fine. I'd probably go Theo over Sterling for the next run. I don't mind keeping Zlatan, as you have sanchez anyway and WCing into two cheap strikers is a bad idea.

I don't think Stones is good value, so I'd be tempted to get a cheaper keeper and try to squeeze Bellerin in - huge upside in the coming months.

The Arsenal selections feel exactly like Liverpool at the moment. Everyone is focusing on Walcott and Coutinho/Lallana, meanwhile Firmino and Ozil could very well take their turn and rip it up this weekend!

Arsenal and Liverpool have at least 3 midfielders each that could score big this week.

Hazard and Capoue have good gameweeks.

        Stick with what you have.

What's the point of Sky's new Sports Mix channel ?. It appears to only show sport that are being shown at the same time, on one of their other sports channels.

Sky's marketing states it will cement Sky position as the first choice for sport by being " available in the same number of Sky TV homes as Sky Sports News HQ, a channel with an annual reach of 17m viewers". This is total rubbish, as I can get Sky Sports News HQ (for free) via my Now box, but I can't get Sky Sports Mix even if I pay for a Now TV sports month pass !

It's the old sideways shuffle. I have Özil and Firmino but Wally and Lala are doing the business so how to use my 1FT?

      A) Bring in Wally and watch Özil score a brace?

      B) Bring in Lala and watch Firmino steal the show?

      C) Save the FT and rage quit when Wally and Lala find their way into the Dream Team?

Also have Ozil anf Firmino. No way I am going to sell any of them, exactly for the reason you state above. Walcott is tempting just to free up funds to also get in Sanchez however..

Re: Firmino. Jontys stats showed a negative correlation between Coutinho on the field and Firmino playing, in terms of points. The one time Firmino delivered this season was against LEI when Cou didn't start...

I guess Klopp will have to give Studge some game time, but as things stands now I can't see Coutinho being dropped more than a few occasional times.

Firmino's stats re assists look awesome but that's about it - there are much better options around, like Mané, Cou, Lallana, Sterling, Walcott, Son etc...

Tl;dr Firmino is a bad pick when Cou plays

        agreed
i said all of this last week before doing the wildcard and i was convinced to get coutinho over firmino and after i watched the cup match and found coutinho was the most essential player, i decided to get him and I asked the folks here said to me that firmino is more important than coutinho and i already got firmino and that was my worst decision ever as i now want to use my free transfer to get coutinho over firmino which looks so awful now

really depressed of getting firmino but I'll leave him as i have no choices
