The Digest – Gameweek 11

We take one final look back at Gameweek 11 as the rush to acquire Chelsea’s brilliant Belgian gains momentum, whilst West Brom hint at form ahead of some very kind fixtures.

The Player

With nine days still remaining until domestic action resumes, Eden Hazard’s latest bandwagon has already accumulated 205,000+ new Fantasy Premier League owners.

Back-to-back double-figure hauls of 14 and 19 points – his two highest of the season – triggered the Chelsea winger’s unstoppable rise to the top of the FPL standings as we scramble for his signature in time for a Gameweek 12 trip to Middlesbrough.

Five goals and two assists in five matches since the move to 3-4-3 indicate a player transformed.

The underlying numbers back this up as Antonio Conte’s new formation affords Hazard the opportunity to move into central areas and dictate the Blues’ attack.

As we’ve mentioned previously, it’s difficult to pinpoint any downside to Hazard’s acquisition.

The only premium midfielder who is guaranteed spot-kicks, Chelsea’s lack of European duties keeps him relatively refreshed and devoid of rest and rotation.

Already, Hazard has scored seven times – more than last year’s five-goal tally – and is one assist shy of equaling a total of four from the previous campaign.

Incredibly, he’s also produced more shots inside the opposition box that he managed in 2015/16.

Last year’s anomaly aside, there’s no doubt that Hazard has been proven Fantasy royalty since arriving at the Bridge.

Yet Conte’s change of tactics looks to have unleashed new and improved version of the Belgian – a scary thought for opponents and one that Fantasy managers can surely ill-afford to ignore.

The Team

After ending Leicester City’s 20-match unbeaten home run in the Premier League, West Brom will be relishing the upcoming schedule.

Tony Pulis’ side now seem ripe for investment, with home encounters against Burnley, Watford and Swansea City in the next five, allied with a trip to Hull City. Only a Gameweek 15 trip to Stamford Bridge puts the dampeners on a run that could promote investment at both ends of the pitch.

It’s in defence, as always, that our faith is resolute.

Pulis’ rearguard has to be backed in all four of those promising clashes, with Gareth McAuley boasting the underlying numbers and ownership (24%, the fourth most popular FPL defender) to do the most damage.

While last year’s four-goal hero Craig Dawson has failed to offer the same threat and sits one booking short of suspension, our attentions have turned to Chris Brunt as an intriguing alternative.

Finally free of injury, the Irishman was handed two second-half sub appearances before playing the full 90 minutes in each of the last two Gameweeks.

Brunt was stationed in central midfield against Man City before shifting onto the flank away to the Foxes last time out.

Classified as a defender in FPL after being utilised at left-back in 2015/16, Brunt’s delivery from set-pieces could be vital to a side that are second only to Chelsea for attempts from crossed corners.

The only concern is that in each of those fixtures, Pulis was devoid of key players through injury or suspension and it is yet uncertain as to where Brunt fits in the pecking order once the Baggies boss has a full quota of players to choose from.

With 14 assists over the previous two seasons, though, Brunt’s potential for FPL points is obvious.

Certainly, Matt Phillips did himself no harm by plundering a goal and assist at the King Power stadium. Dropped to the bench for the previous Gameweek, he was reinstalled to the first XI due to the absence of James McClean and Nacer Chadli.

While McClean has served out his ban, he is troubled by a back problem and along with Nacer Chadli, Salomon Rondon and Saido Berahino – remains a doubt ahead of the home encounter against Burnley on Monday 20 October.

Again, this may limit many managers’ interest to the Baggies’ backline, yet if Chadli can recover from minor knee surgery, his 75% goal involvement is set to turn heads.

Back down to 6.5 in price, the Belgian’s four goals and two assists in seven appearances indicate that there may be value in the Hawthorns attack this time around, offering an option as a cheap fourth midfielder or even as a fifth player in the centre of the park for those keen on the 3-5-2 set-up.

The Talking Point

The race to acquire Hazard has already earned the Belgian a price rise of 0.2 since the weekend.

For many, Alexis Sanchez’s injury scare in training for Chile has been reason enough to make the move – the Arsenal attacker is second only to Raheem Sterling for transfers out in midfield in the Gameweek.

Clearly, if Sanchez is ruled out for any period, then the trade makes sense but, if passed fit for Gameweek 12, his role up top for the Gunners could punish those who choose to get rid at this point.

There’s also the spectre of Olivier Giroud to consider.

The Frenchman started in the Champions League last week and his introduction during the north London derby forced Sanchez back to the flank.

Overlooking Hazard looks perilous at this point, particularly with the fixtures swinging in Chelsea’s favour from Gameweek 15.

Perhaps Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy may also play a part in our thinking.

The City manager’s decision to omit Sterling from the squad to face ‘Boro last weekend has proved the catalyst behind the winger’s exodus and as the schedule continues to pick up pace, some may even cite Sergio Aguero as dispensable if Pep plots a “horses for courses” approach.

Kevin De Bruyne’s average of 6.2 points per match to Aguero’s 6.8 offers some solace for those eyeing up the Belgian as City “coverage” but the underlying numbers suggest that his team-mate simply looks far too dangerous right now.

It may be that it is Hazard’s fellow Blue Diego Costa whom many choose to overlook in order to acquire the winger.

Yes, he’s stepped up in consistency under new manager Antonio Conte, yet Costa remains one booking shy of a single-match ban, with a penchant for getting on the wrong side of referees the one constant during his time at the Bridge.

The likes of Jermain Defoe and Charlie Austin offer excellent value for money up top and may even be the second-striker solution for those with a 3-5-2 formation, thus freeing up the cash to spend big in midfield to accommodate Hazard and at least one, or both, of Liverpool’s in-form Brazilians Philipp Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

It’s a circling debate and there are several configurations and solutions being pursued – all of which carry a potential risk.

However, a decision to proceed without Hazard appears to the biggest gamble of all.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Trouble between the sticks

With Butland back in training and Mannone now with a full reserve team game under his belt is it the end of the line for the budget goalkeepers.

Already Jakupovic has been dropped, are Grant and Pickford next?

I think it's safe to say that Grant's days are numbered as soon as Butland is ready.

Granted Pickford's performances have been strong - but zero clean sheets is perhaps the better stat to look at.

What are those relying on these budget stoppers doing? Hoping they can continue to deputise or look to trade up to the likes of Heaton or Foster?

And what of Mannone - 4.3 now and a proven FPL gem. (also v good in Sky too)

The counter logic is that Marshall has zero clean sheets yet no-one is talking about Jaku coming back (apart from us here at FFS). Pickford is now cemented as the no.1 (he made some crucial saves to get the win against Bournemouth only last week!) and only some horrific performances will change that

Jaku was never the number one though so is not proven. He has always been back up.

Mannone was number one and didn't lose his place through form - just injury.

Easy to see why Moyes would bring back the more experienced keeper to shore up and better organise the defence.

Pickford can make all the great saves he likes - but if he's not keeping clean sheets and the regular number one is waiting in the wings it is a no brainer for Mannone to come back in.

True, though the way Sunderland have been talking about Pickford seems like he's displaced Mannone as the no.1

Anyway probably best to just plug and play Heaton!

Having started the season with Foster & Jaku and since done...
      Foster ------> Pickford
      Jaku -------> Grant
      Grant -------> Heaton
.....I feel I've already given too much attention to this position.
Heaton will be between my sticks every game from now on and that's one less thing to worry about.

I see Pickford keeping his place. He's done well, the lack of cleansheets cant be blamed on him. Mannone's not exactly a great keeper and Moyes may want to continue with the younger local option to continue his development

Moyes not exactly known for given youth a chance and they are in a relegation dogfight so don't exactly have the luxury of giving the kid a chance. What if in the next game he makes a rick due to his inexperience that costs them a win and those 2pts send them down?
I don't think Moyes is that kind of risk taker especially considering there is nothing to suggest that Mannone is not as good if not better than Pickford?

I got only 4 clean sheets from my keepers all of last season so maybe I am not qualified to say this but picking a Sunderland goalkeeper, whether it be Pickford, Mannone or Fido the Black Cat is insane.

Pickford has 0 clean sheets in 9 games and has a PPM ratio of 3.0

Heaton has 3 clean sheets in 12 and has a PPM of 4.7, also superior number of saves.

Every Sunderland goalkeeper has been a fpl darling ever since Mignolet for the sole reason their defence is utter tripe. In previous years they have got the odd clean sheet here and there but this season they are clearly the leagues whipping boys.

Mannone got four clean sheets in the second half of last season - he was absent for much of the first half. Also he was second only to Gomes in terms of saves. Only seven other keepers got more clean sheets than him.

      Pickfords 0.1 rise is glorious.
When he gets dropped, its around the same time as Grant. Lots of people with Grant/Pickford will chose to use a FT on either or, limiting his value fall. And most people will only move him out on a WC. Can't see Pickford at 3.9 before the DGW WCs

I've got Grant/Pickford, and the plan was/is to buy Butland (4.7) when he returns. I hope Pickford can keep his place, so I would keep him. If not, I just would move to Mannone as a 2nd GK. The only problem could be both Grant/Pickford losing their spot on the same GW.

WBA have some really tasty home fixt up to gw27 (I think, could be longer) and we know Pulis will get them to circa 10+ cs this season so they will defo pick up a few over that period. I think he could be the keeper to have for the next few months.

Heaton has been good but apart from the unlikely/improbable cs v Liverpool, United he should be about 14 pts down on his tally so far which would make him a lot less of a legend about these parts. To rely on a gk who has to make so many saves by definition means he is not as likely to get cs imo. Take those 14pts off him and he is on the similar pts to foster who has had a very tough fixture run (compared to the upcoming run). I am not saying Heaton is a bad choice btw just that he is not as outstanding as everyone is making out. For me if I was picking now I'd go Foster but Heaton would be a close second due to the save pts and the hope that they will get some cs from somewhere soon (would require tightening up at the back and giving Heaton less to do though).

I have had Mandanda (underwhelming decision as he has terrible defence in front of him and yet doesn't accrue too many save points either) and Pickford.

I think Pickford will keep his spot at first, he has done well and Mannone may be eased back in over time.

I will be looking at Mandanda to Butland around Gameweek 14 when I think Butland will be back and is probably a season keeper from that point on.

I actually think I'm going to be selling Kun for Costa as soon as the latter see's out his ban..

Pep rotation risk during the festive period. Costa will likely come close to Agueros final tally. 2.5 or so million difference means can manage a midfield of Hazard Sanchez Coutinho Firmino Allen
Not that Kun isn't going to be gold. There's just better value for money elsewhere this season.

I think the going without Kun risk is exaggerated.

Say he scores 25 goals this season, which he probably will if fit. He is still 13.0

How many points will Firm, Coutinho, Mane, Sanchez, KDB, Lukaku and Costa manage?

If he gets injured, which he probably will, how many points will we spend taking him out and bringing him in again?

He is the best striker in the league but a major injury risk, and a minor rotation one. I have him at the moment, but this is the first season where I see the logic in going without if the chelski and Liverpool options retain their value.

Two camps here on Kun. One holding steadfast to him with expectations of huge hauls. The other like us thinking that value is better spread elsewhere with better balance to the team. Those with Kun have to do with cheap 4th and 5th mids while us can afford to upgrade on our 4th with the extra money.

You can hang on to Kun and have.....

        Hazard/2 Livp milf/Walcott or Siggurdson
        Kun/Au$tin/Lukaku or Giroud

    Heaton - Pickford
    Alonso - Stones - Evans - Holebas - Kingsley
Hazard - Coutinho - Firmino - Walcott - De Roon
    Aguero - Austin - Lukaku

Could all change if Sanchez is given the all clear (Coutinho and Walcott to Sanchez and Allen)

Don't know if it has ben commented before, but finally Costa's injury evolution is a bit worse than expected at first. He won't be available for saturday's game against Macedonia, so he's left the NT to return to London to recover. Aspas (ex-Liverpool) has been called to replace him.

    http://www.marca.com/futbol/seleccion/2016/11/10/58245399468aebf0048b45ed.html

Anyway, it shouldn't be too serious and I guess he could be available against Middlesbrough.

I'm guessing, just because the doctors expected him to be fit for Saturday. He arrived with that small injury, but they were optimistic. Finally he still feeling some pain and didn't train, so probably they think that it would be too soon and too risky. That's what makes me think that he should recover in a few days and the injury shouldn't be too serious.

Fair enough, but if they expected him to be fit for the first game but he is now ruled out of the second suggests they were way out on their initial diagnosis. Nothing wrong with creating a bit of panic anyway 😉

His best position is forward or any of the wings. The problem he has a lot of competition there. It would be great to see him earning a place in the starting XI, though it won't be easy with that squad. He should adapt quite well to Arsenal style, IMO, and I really hope he can show all his potential there.

Just think Aguero vs Palace is better than Hazard v Boro and I don't think Liverpool mids v Southampton is THAT good a fixture either (although I hear Coutinho has a good record).

For my team I think Aguero is the best choice.

That's overanalyzing things again in my view. If you have the budget to fit him in, he's a very likely source of points week in, week out. Swansea are dreadful right now, and if Lukaku's point potential is higher than Aguero this week, it does not mean Aguero is not worth a spot in your team. I'd rather have both and the premium captaincy option most weeks.

If Costa doesn't make Midd will Batshuayi play up front or maybe Hazard could. Interesting

Bat. Hazard is better with a striker in front of him. He's petrifying when running at goal, not so much with his back to goal

Hazard is basically a second striker anyway so I'd imagine Batshuayi will come in

            Austin.

For free Bellerin > Alonso. Yay or nay?

Tough call mate. I sold Bellerin to fund Hazard but after the MU game Arsenal have 3 plum fixtures whereas Alonso has Spurs and city. IMO stick with Bellers and switch to Alonso after the Chelsea City game

Probably not, unless you've got 2 FTs and nothing else worth attention.

Stupidly used my 2FT already to get Hazard in by selling Sterling and Bellerin to fund it.
Regardless of the Sanchez injury news, should I take a hit or two to field 11 (given the fact some S.Americans may be rested)??!

For argument sake all the SAmericans will play, would you take a hit to get of Smith to defo play 3 at the back?

I would, but mostly because Smith has poor fixtures coming up and this is effectively a chance to ship for only -2.

Ya valid point. Smith out for Pieter's for a -4 and maybe to Alonso -8 if Sanchez needs shifting too

SANCHEZ BOOST Alexis Sanchez injury: Arsenal star not as bad as first thought and should be fit for return against Manchester United 🙂

          thoughts on my WC team?
          Heaton, Grant
          Alosno, McAuley, Friend, Fuchs, KIngsley,
          Hazard, Redmond, Firmino, Coutinho, Allen
          Vokes, Aguero, Lukaku

Anything in the bank? I would probably downgrade Redmond to Gundogan or Snodgrass.

Personally don't have faith in Leicester defence, so maybe Fuchs -> Cedric (has great fixtures after Pool and Everton until Gw27) or even Stones if he looks to rotate well with your other defenders.

Use the money to upgrade Vokes to Austin?

Probably wouldn't have Grant either, as Butland's return is imminent.

Pickford spot is also at risk with Mannone starting to be ready. Also on WC and probably going for Heaton and Pickford as well (got him at 4m).

Austin over Vokes. Redmond/Allen to a cheapie to fund it.

Don't think Fuchs is worth his price, prefer Brunt or another Chelsea defender if possible
