The Numbers Game – Everton

Our series of in-depth team-by-team members’ articles continues this morning with a look at Everton.

We get underway by checking out the team performance levels in a bid to spot any trends of improvements before casting an eye over the standout individuals ahead of 2017/18.

After limping home in eleventh place with 47 points in 2015/16 – just 10 clear of the drop zone – the Merseyside outfit flourished under new manager Ronald Koeman and finished in seventh spot on 61 points.

Yet in terms of goal threat, there was very little difference between their final campaign under Roberto Martinez, with the Toffees netting 62 times compared with 59 beforehand.

This is also backed up by the underlying numbers.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Making the most of Everton.

Everton are set to be a different beast next season, with new faces like Klassen as well as rumoured recruits such as Keane from Burnley.

In addition their attack could be different with Lukaku perhaps on his way out, to Chelsea.

Luckily we have some time to assess their options.

For the first five GWKs the Toffees have arguably the worst set of fixtures with trips to the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea as well as hosting Tottentham.

Gameweek 6 looks the ideal time to tap into their assets. Between GWK 6 and 15 they arguably only have one tough fixture – a trip to Arsenal in GWK 9. Other than that they have a see of blue on the season ticker.

For me I’m looking at bringing in some defensive coverage then – perhaps Keane, Pickford even. Williams could be another.

In attack we’ll have time to assess a potential new striker as well as Klassen.

With Everton defence and attack providing strong value returns in seasons past how are you looking to get the most of the Toffees next season?

I'm following Mr. Crabtree this season. No Everton players for me. Atleast that's the plan.

How long is Coleman out for? I guess Holgate/Kenny could be worth looking at as cheap options into the backline.

He said this month that there is still no forecast date for his return.
He doesn't intend to return till he's 100% fit, and it may well not be till next year.

It might take some time for Everton to gel. A new striker and attacking midfielder to the league. I'm tempted by their defence though.

Who can they get that is better than Lukaku without CL to attract them when there are 5 other English teams with CL? This is the problem Liverpool have now, and they have a CL qualifier!!! At the moment they can offer the possibility of CL but if they win their qualifier then I reckon Liverpool will sign a couple of big ones straight away. Everton can't do that.

Completely avoiding until GW6, as you recommend Jonty. Will use that time to assess and see how they bed in the new faces. Also will be keeping an eye on rotation for Europe, trying to spot any patterns there - and are they taking it seriously or not.

I'm assuming the sea of blue for Southampton and WBA ends in GW5, so seems wise to swap one of their defenders (which I will most likely start the season with) for one of Everton's at that point.

Will reassess in GW6. Baines/Pickford in on WC I imagine. I can see Lukaku priced at 10.5/11.0 to cover in case he moves to Chelsea / Man Utd so I think there will much better ways to spend the money

It's actually perfect Everton having that tough opening run, plenty of time to see how they'll set up and perform, followed by easier fixtures, although tbf not sure if i'll invest in them anyway, unless there's a nailed bargain in defence

Its too hard to say right now.

Will Lukaku and Barkley defo leave? and then who will they sign? Will they be able to sign an elite striker with that huge money? If yes he automatically becomes an.option.
And Gylfi , Who can forget him. If he signs he will be main option from them

Or will lukaku and barkely do a sensational u-turn and stay?

      All depending on various factors
probably I will have one defender from them at one ppoint surely ,Keane would be nice to have.

Klassen looks a very shrewd buy .
Him or of Siggy would be good.

Lets see what they do with the striker.

Yes, obviously Sigurdsson will be good - but unclear at this stage whether Everton will meet Swansea's very high valuation.

Luckily we have plenty of time to assess how he does should he join.

But be wary - we've been here before. A price hike, move to a big club and it didn't work out well for him then.

I usually pick an absolute disaster in week 1, then fix over the international break.

I remember one year I started with Sagna, Skrtel, Felipe Luiz and two other defenders, and zero of them started.

In that case, it would be sensible to Wildcard. But to be fair, if you do your research, you shouldn't have that many non-starters. January 1st is along way away. I'll be keeping mine in my back pocket.

Jonty has said that one of his biggest mistakes last season was wildcarding in GW3 for the "fun" of the game. I'll be listening to his advice and using my first Wildcard perhaps just before the fixture congestion starts in winter.

that doesnt mean GW3 WC Is not good . If there is a need WC should be used as soon as possible. when it is needed

WC wont help much in them congesting fixtures

A WC will give you a strong bench, which is always useful during fixture congestion.

I agree though - use it when needed.

and then continue with that strong bench in second half of the season and taking hits if you want to push the money into starting XI when some big hitter pops up and you know you will not use WC again as its going be used near dBGW.

Ain't ideal I would say. There is no way around it imo. Sooner or later it will even out

I WC-ed prior to GW4 and it was a total success. It really depends on everyone's team, though.

Don't see any rule as when is the best time to WC.

Play the early fixtures and ideally get a points lead. Assess over the international break and make a new team. Valid tactic.

Everton are a wait and see for me with their fixtures. They have some tempting options. A fully fit Everton has their defenders interesting me. A strong Gueye/Schneiderlin midfield makes it even more appealing. Klassen is another interesting option, but is once again a wait and see for me.

yep i am not convinced at all, hope we are all proved wrong but I just cant be that confident. And if we lose Costa too its a massive risk. Is Luk better than Costa? Im not so sure. I would rather us pay another £30m and go for Mbappe. Bigger upside.

Not sure a club with a turnover of £329m should be spending £200m on 4 players, and that's not even taking into account the wages, etc..

Would assume some would be off-set with the sale of Costa as well. Probably get a good £30/40m extra from league win, so should pretty much cover itself I'd imagine

What do you guys think of me setting up on online tutorial/seminar on 'how to become an elite ff manager'?

Can do via skype conference or hangouts. Reckon will get quite a few guys from here.

Will consist of an introduction about me and my credentials then a compact and consice guide on how to become a top player followed by a q&a session.

Here's my look at how the Scout Picks did in GWK 1 last season and what lessons we can learn from our - as it turns out very average - picks.

Jay Rod closing in on a move to WBA. Could he be another one who is listed as a mid but plays up front? Pulis teams aren't exactly blessed with goals but an OOP player with those fixtures..

J Rod/Chadli/Phillips could provide good value from the offset I think.

I've been thinking, and it's not the colossal transfer fees that frustrate me, but rather than low amounts that the Prem sells players for whenever they move abroad.

Gomis - scored 21 goals in France last year - goes for £2.5m
Cuadrado - Champions league finalist and league winner - goes for £17m

Compare that to the mad money for Salah and Ederson and it's just ridiculous

    Hey you guys!

I've been playing around with a scoring projection system over the last few days, very simple stuff, just based on Goals Scored / Conceded at Home / Away last season.

I'm multiplying the average goals scored by the attacking team by the average goals conceded by the defending team (taking home and away into account), and dividing through by the average number of goals scored by all teams per game. In theory, this means that for a team scoring twice the league average playing a team conceding twice the league average, I will project four times the average number of goals being scored.

I've done a bit of back analysis and there is a decent trend from last season, but with a whole load of scatter. Obviously there is also the problem that this is a whole new season that will have different numbers.

The results I get out seem pretty believable, and maybe provide a slightly more logical basis for assessing likely scoring and clean sheet potential than the usual arbitrary numbers.

Results (of my analysis, not the actual results unless it works far far better than I expect) for the first 5 weeks including total goals scored and conceded are given below. See what you think:

    Projected goals scored
    1 2 3 4 5 Total
    ARS 2.9 1.8 1.4 2.9 1.3 10.3
    BOU 0.9 2.7 1.5 0.6 2.8 8.5

            1-1 sorry

There should probably be a couple more clean sheets in those scores, and the back analysis for last season isn't great:
            http://imgur.com/a/ExdP8

That's goals scored by home team, predicted vs actual.

Very weird trend towards the top for the highest scoring games not being predicted as such. Maybe its because of teams parking the bus if they think they're going to get hammered.

I'll add the away data and keep playing around in the run-up to the season.

Villa, Brentford, & Shef Wednesday going up.
City, Chelsea and Spurs going down.

Huddersfield and Brighton. The 3rd team depends on transfer business or lack thereof (Newcastle?)

Leeds and Derby with the 3rd team being Fulham

How would Huddersfield and Brighton not being in the league leave things more even than say City and Chelsea not being in the league?
        Also, Derby are terrible.

I was thinking Reading but wrote Derby for some reason.

My thinking is that there less whipping boys, the better the league will be. Huddersfield and Brighton look like they will be relegated by gw 30 imo

Ha true, I guess it's whether you go for the "less whipping boys" approach, or the "less teams capable of whipping the whipping boys" approach!

Fulham is a pretty decent shout though.

Are there any stats on how the 'big clubs' perform away from home on opening day? Trying to work out if the home teams are more motivated day 1, and get good results, or if the situation overawes them and they get dismantled.

All looking towards the possibility of Kane (c) at Newcastle
