Scout Report – Sandro Ramirez

Everton’s busy summer in the transfer window continued yesterday with the signing of Spanish U21 international forward Sandro Ramirez from Malaga after his £5.3 million release clause was triggered.

The 21-year-old penned a four-year deal with the Toffees and has been handed the No. 9 shirt.

Speaking to the club’s official website, manager Ronald Koeman revealed some of the qualities he believes Sandro will add to his side:

“There was a lot of interest in Sandro because, of course, he’s a goalscorer, he’s young and he has a big future in the game. We have been trying to bring in good players so we can have greater productivity in the team and he will bring that. He will bring a lot of good qualities and he’s a really good goalscorer, too.”

The History

After starting out at his hometown club Las Palmas, Ramirez joined Barcelona’s youth set-up in 2009 at the age of 14.

He progressed through the ranks to feature for Barcelona B before scoring the only goal as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Villarreal on his first-team debut in August 2014.

Ramirez made six further substitute appearances over the next few months, scoring one goal, but spent the rest of the season back in the ‘B’ side.

The 2015/16 season saw Ramirez continue to struggle to establish himself in the first-team squad. He made 20 appearances in all competitions, with the majority coming off the bench, as he registered three goals and two assists.

Barcelona decided to release Ramirez last summer, La Liga outfit Malaga signing the attacker on a three-year contract.

Ramirez enjoyed a sensational campaign, totalling 14 goals and five assists in 30 league appearances, playing almost exclusively as a central striker.

Capped at U17, U18, U19 and U21 levels by Spain, scoring 13 goals in 18 appearances, Ramirez was part of the Spanish side that lost 1-0 to Germany in the final of the UEFA European U21 Championship.

The Prospects

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin the only forward other than Romelu Lukaku currently in the Everton squad, the need for Koeman to bolster his attacking options was plain to see.

That’s also compounded by the fact that Lukaku and Ross Barkley – who is also expected to depart over the summer – were the only Everton players to score at least five times last term, netting 25 and five goals respectively.

Lukaku admitted last month that he does not expect to be playing his football at Goodison Park this season, so the addition of Sandro is certainly a welcome one.

The Spaniard may only arrive in England with one season of experience as a regular starter, but he has considerable potential, capable of playing centrally as he did last term, or out wide as was the case during much of his time at Barcelona.

Spanish football expert David Cartlidge outlined some of Sandro’s main strengths – his goalscoring instincts, the ability to hold the ball up and bring his team-mates into play – while the Spaniard himself cited what he sees as the qualities that will see him thrive in the Premier League:

“My key strength is goalscoring. It’s always good to bring goals to a team and that’s what I’m hoping to do. My game is making runs off the ball, trying to find space, putting in a lot of effort and running hard. I think that’s an advantage in the Premier League.”

While standing at just 5ft 7 in tall, Sandro possesses reasonable strength, which allows him to shield the ball effectively, and with his speed can quickly spin away from defenders to initiate attacks.

From a Fantasy perspective, his free-kick taking abilities certainly catch the eye, with five of his 14 league goals last term coming from outside the box.

Sandro boasts terrific technique when striking a dead-ball and looks a genuine threat every time he shoots from distance.

That ability perhaps explains why he impressively averaged a shot every 25.17 minutes last season, better than Lukaku (29.7).

The Belgian’s strengths as a poacher are illustrated by the fact he fared better in terms of minutes per attempt inside the box, averaging one every 40.83 minutes, compared to 53.86 for Sandro.

In terms of creativity, there was little to choose between the pair, with Lukaku registering a key pass every 69.51 minutes, slightly superior to Sandro (72.38).

Given that Lukaku totalled 25 goals and six assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last season, those underlying statistics are pretty encouraging regarding Sandro’s prospects heading into the new campaign.

The difficulty in judging Sandro’s appeal for 2017/18 is the fact the Toffees look sure to add to their striking resources this summer should Lukaku depart as expected.

Bearing in mind Sandro’s age and relative lack of first-team experience, the Toffees could well look to add an older striker, with AC Milan’s Carlos Bacca and Napoli’s Duvan Zapata among the forwards linked, with a move for Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud also mooted in recent days.

Koeman’s penchant for target men up top could also dictate where the new boy plays. Essentially, Sandro won a mere eight headers in La Liga last season and bearing in mind that Koeman has opted for the likes of Lukaku and Graziano Pelle as his preferred lone strikers at Everton and Southampton respectively, the new boy could be utilised in a central support berth or out wide.

The timing of such a move may have an influence on the price handed to Sandro in FPL, with the Spaniard perhaps set to come in around the 7.0 to 8.0 mark and potentially handing us a viable option in the mid-price bracket.

But the horrendous fixture list following an opening day home clash against Stoke City (mci, che, TOT, mun) means the 21-year-old is unlikely to feature in our Gameweek 1 plans unless he makes a very strong impression during pre-season.

In addition, it is often wise to show caution when considering new arrivals to the Premier League. We can perhaps be less wary of genuine world class talents but we can’t put Sandro in that bracket just yet. Only one of top 25 points scorers in FPL last season were without Premier League experience – Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But providing that Sandro can settle into life on Merseyside, he looks to have the technical ability and desire to flourish at Goodison Park.

Sandro’s signing could be one of the best value moves made this summer, and if he can secure a regular starting place and is priced favourably, he may well be a factor in FPL once the tough early fixtures are out of the way.

It depends really Andy on whether you apply just the predicted day or you start whittling down to hours, minutes, seconds.
I think if you were looking to make some form of 'prediction game' I think guys should post the date and include the hour (24 clock)
        E.g.
        11/7/17 @ 08.00.

One of the key issues for me in FPL is making sure you have players who play every game.

    Forwards
Quite like the look of Defoe in this regard. Most minutes of any forward in 2016/17. Deeney also quite interesting. Hopefully both are on penalties.

    Midfielders
Siggy is a machine of appearances. A move to Everton may curtail his appearances though with EL. Capoue if playing in a more advanced role is an option. The Spurs duo of Alli and Eriksen, although to be seen whether CL demands might mean fewer PL minutes this season if Spurs strengthen their squad so can rest them. Zaha as well, particularly given no AFCON. Redmond might troll us again though?

    Defenders
Quite a few options here as a lot played more than 3,060 minutes (34 games). Bournemouth defenders, Monreal and Dawson (WBA) also of interest.

Definitely keeping an eye on a few mentioned there. What price do you think Defoe and Sigurdsson will be? 7.5 & 8.0?

Defoe - 8.0m. Siggy must be 8.5m or 9.0m for his consistency over recent seasons.

Ahhh, thanks very much, it does show it there.

For what it's worth, 11 scored & 3 missed last season.

Career total: 23 scored, 5 missed.

Was looking at Sky's Transfer Centre Done Deals for Everton. So far the IN column reads:

    Jordan Pickford-Sunderland, £30m
    Davy Klassen-Ajax, £23.6m
    Henry Onyekuru-Eupen,undisclosed
    Sandro Ramirez-Malaga, £5.25m
    Michael Keane-Burnley, £30m

As you can see Everton's outlay to date has been nearly £90m pounds. They have had quite a few transfers OUT but only one has been for a fee which was Cleverley to Watford for an undisclosed fee. I doubt he went for more than £15m, but it was probably closer to £10m.

The point of this article is that surely with such a large outlay (for Everton) this early in the transfer window Lukaku is a cert to be leaving. I cant see them spending that much money with knowing they will recoup a lot of it from the sale of the Belgian. My guess is he will be sold for £75m.

I agree IE. Everton's average net transfer spend over the past 5 seasons has been just shy of £22m pounds. I really doubt they will be holding onto Lukaku based on that alone.

However there are rumours afoot of siggy, giroud and Rooney coming in (unlikely to be all three) so don't expect the Everton spending to finish. Either way very exciting times for Everton fans

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Forwards Merry Go Round

Sandro looks to strengthen Everton's options in attack but should Lukaku move further recruits up top are certain for the Toffees.

Giroud is rumoured to be a key target for Koeman.

Which potential striker moves are you hoping will become reality? Lukaku to Chelsea? Giroud to Everton? Morata to ManU? Or Lacazette to Arsenal?

And could this mean we have more options in attack next season, to spell the end of 3-5-2's brief reign?

      All of the above!

I'd be seriously interested in Giroud at West Ham or Everton.

I'd like Lukaku to move after FPL has opened as I think he'll be 0.5 - 1.0m more as a Chelsea player.

IF, and that's a big if, I can stick to my tactics of swerving new players to the PL for the first few weeks then i'll take stock of Morata and Lacazette and potentially bring them in with a double transfer and change from my planned 442 back to a traditional 343. Of the 2, I expect both to hit 15-20 goals and i'd fancy Lacazette to get a few more than Morata.

Frontline of Giroud, Lacazette, Morata possible. They'll be competing with Kane, Lukaku, Jesus, Defoe and a 4.5m for a place in my GW1 team. Probably some more contenders too, of course.

All of them interesting except maybe Morata as i just don't see Man Utd having that much attacking output, at least not enough to warrant a premium price striker - Giroud to Everton on the other hand could be excellent value, although not till after their tricky opening fictures, which is fine as it gives time to assess performance and nailedness.
Lacazette could be good too, especially if Sanchez leaves Arsenal, as the attacking focus would probably be more through the striker without Sanchez being involved.

If Sanchez stays and we sign another attacking mid, I can see a potential.situation in which Ozil isn't nailed (I perhaps even hope this is true) as Wenger chooses the player who works hardest to start against the big teams, and appeases Ozil by letting him rack up the assist against Huddersfield. I think it would be a mistake to revert back to a 4-2-3-1 simply to fit Ozil into the hole, which was probably a main reason we stuck with it so long

Don't you think that Ozil was our best player when we were in 3-4-2-1? The lack of defensive work made him excel imo

That's what everyone says, but it's only a small sample of games. I'm not excited by him in the new season yet, but after a few GWs I might be able to get behind him. Although if the price is right I might use your optimism to justify putting him my GW1 team too!

Yeah I reckon he'll be 9m or 8.5m, I only want one more signing (if Ozil & Sanchez stay which I think they will) & thats Goretzka to give Ramsey & Xhaka some competition. Sanchez & Ozil staying are my main priorities this Summer, anything more is an added bonus especially if they're quality

My guess would be that we'll probably lose Sanchez, but i think this might be a good thing for Ozil in FPL terms, as he could play a more defined nbr 10 role, slipping passes through for Lacazette (fingers crossed) - with Sanchez playing, the striker can often by reduced to a decoy runner on many occasions

What does a more defined number 10 look like? He played in a system that was practically made for him last season, and didn't perform better than the other players who are slated at Arsenal, e.g. Walcott, Ox, Ramsey etc...

i just think Sanchez being in that system means it doesn't work the way it should/could, as Sanchez rightfully hogs a lot of the ball and involvement in play, and the striker at the point of the formation often just becomes a pivot or decoy runner - don't get me wrong, i'd have Sanchez over Ozil all day every day

Yep, it's from the article above - just made me think about whether to start with any of the new striker signings from GW1 (Jonty's Hot topic) or go for 'tried & tested' (Kane, Alli, Coutinho, etc.) with the more expensive players and see how the newbies take to the PL first. Hoping to avoid a GW3 wildcard this season, but every season seems to see my planning go out of the window by then anyway...

That player was Ibrahimovic. You need to consider the quality of the player coming in. If Bale, Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar etc. came in they would score a bundle of points.

A lot of the new players that come in are average imports - not really convinced they are better then the English players coming through the academies. For every Michu (one season wonder import) there are 10 or more flops.

The PL does seem suited to pure goalscorers (Ibra, Suarez) or those with some physicality (pace, strength, acceleration) as opposed to midfielders who control tempo (e.g. Di Maria, Veron).

True, I'm just a little wary I guess - Shevchenko & Kluivert were both quality players but it didn't really happen for them in the prem.

Of those you mentioned, Bale & Ronaldo have PL experience so you wouldn't need to worry about those. Would love to see Messi in the prem though!

Interesting point, although we have to look at what players are bought into the league (as someone pointed out if they are all premium strikers/attacking mids then they may score a hatful) and remember they are competing against every player that already exists and does well in the league - so we probably need to compare just the few noteworthy imports, let's say possibly Morata/Lacazette/Salah, and note that we are comparing against the 25 very best point scorers - if they then finish in the top 25 at the end of the season you could flip the stats the other way around and say there is a 100% success rate of comparable players who are fresh imports finishing in top 25, if you get my drift

That being said it can players a season or two, even the best ones, to get used to a different league and find their shooting boots

Yeah, but take a look at the last year's signings. Only Ibra had a decent chance to be up there and fight for the Golden Boot. Mane & Benteke were already in PL. Mkhitaryan & Pogba really disappointed me. I had no idea what to expect from Sane, Perez, Llorente, Ayew & Slimani.

        Good point.

Looking at the 15/16 data I reckon 6 of the top 25 FPL scorers had no Premier League experience:
        Ighalo
        Andre Ayew
        Payet
        Wijnaldum
        Deeney
        Firmino

Fair dos. Particularly Wijnaldum and Deeney, who both took to it like ducks to water.

Hint: both have huge arses, and are very strong. André is blisteringly quick, even now. Firmino and Ighalo do not really convince me.

Midfielders like Mirallas need to contribute more goals if Everton are to retain 7th. His conversion rate last season was very poor for an inside forward.

The age old question of risk v reward.

Everyone will tell you to wait until Friday/Saturday, but in reality when we see a player we want soaring up in price whilst our current dross is falling like a stone, how can you not hit that button? 😀

If my player is 100% out of the next game (bad injury, suspension) I tend to hit the button as soon as they're about to drop. I know for sure they're leaving, so it's only one player I'm now gambling on.

Of course the circumstances of the player you're considering bringing in early have to be taken into account but yeah, if I see my player is about to drop, it's painful enough to hit the button early.

It's not really a question of one or the other.
More about getting the right balance between them.

If you make an early transfer then the risk is that either your new player or another member of your squad might get injured later in the week, but your reward if there are no unexpected injuries is that your TV should improve.

But if you wait then the risk is a lower TV but the reward is that you might have avoided the downside of unexpected injuries.

a bit of both, depends on the situation - if i've got an injured or suspended player, and my transfer target has just scored a hat-trick 2 gameweeks in a row, has no european/international/cup games before next fixture, and could face a triple price rise, then i'll transfer asap - if there's no rush/price pressure, or potential for other factors to come into play, then i will TRY to wait, patience can often pay off

Combination of the two strategies. Last term I picked up on a few noteworthy transfers that increased my team value early in the season. Of course injuries that sidelined certain players limited those early transfer possibilities. Later in the season, holding transfers or using them later in the week when necessary.

Based on limited input, it seems people think he should be 8.5-10. If he performs well, he could get up to large ownership and big price rise as the season goes on. Perhaps 10m would be best.

Sky Sports - "Jose Mourinho unhappy on transfers"
Surely he wanted to sign Pogba. No point sulking about it now

Until he says he's unhappy on transfers I believe nothing.

Really hoping United get Matic. That would be a beastly midfield trio of Matic Herrera Pogba. As all are capable of defending they can lock down leads much easier. Fergie's 1-0s won so many league and cup titles.

Two attacking signings would be nice. Lukaku/Morata and a winger.

Have United been linked to Lukaku yet? There aren't exactly stacks of high-calibre (and realistically available) CFs around, so I'd be surprised if they weren't interested

          They have been, yes.

It's believed Lukaku's preference is Chelsea, given Hazard and Courtois are there, but his 2nd choice is United. Chelsea are waiting to see what happens with Costa, I believe. There's a stack of dominoes ready to fall, and we're waiting for the first one to fall.

          All speculation of course 🙂

Not Monday, because they may have to work during the weekends.

Purely because of the working week - I'd imagine they wouldn't want to complete their preparation/testing on the Friday then wait until Monday to launch and equally I don't suppose they want to launch on Friday with the possibility of needing to fix things on the weekend if anything goes wrong. I may be way off of course.

In the UK I think we have a mixture. You can order a pint of beer (470ml or something) but in the shops you can buy a litre of water or pop.

I don't think it's a stupid system, like feet and inches is just 12 inches to a foot. It gets stupid when you have 14 pounds in a stone which doesn't really make sense.

You also get the height of a horse in "hands"!

From feet to inches international and survey length units conversion factor is 12. To find out how many inches in feet, simply multiply by 12 to find the result or instead, use the converter below.
        1 Foot = 12 Inches
Foot is a very commonly used length unit since ancient times. 1959, it is defined to be 0.3048 metre (meter). 1 survey foot is also 12 survey inches. The abbreviation is "ft" or (') prime symbol.

It's really not essential for such systems to be international. Those within the country know how it works, and outsiders can learn if they need to. Standardisation is convenient, but convenience is dull. Cultural diversity, baby.
