Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre-season

Stoke City were the first Premier League side in first team friendly action as they began their pre-season tour of Switzerland with a 1-0 victory in the opening fixture of the “2017 Uhrencup”.

Neuchatel Xamax 0 Stoke City 1

With just five days of pre-season training behind them, Mark Hughes’ side played out their first summer encounter and earned a 1-0 win over Swiss second division side Neuchatel Xamax in the Tissot Arena.

The opening match in the four-team Uhrencup – which also features BSC Young Boys and Benfica – was decided by a late own goal as Hughes used the opportunity to field two different XI’s over the two halves.

Mixing first-team players and Under 23s, Hughes started the match in a 4-2-3-1 formation and fielded Jack Butland in goal ahead of a defence that included captain Ryan Shawcross and full-backs Phil Bardsley and Erik Pieters.

Bojan started in the central attacking midfield position, with want-away Marko Arnautovic also named in the starting line-up. Saido Berahino was the lone striker.

Hughes’ early plans were disrupted by a back injury for Bardsley, who departed on 19 minutes. The problem was later reported as a knee injury.

Berahino is a player who will be monitored by Fantasy managers in pre-season, with the former West Brom man surely burdened with the responsibility of scoring 15+ goals next season. Stoke’s official website described the striker’s appearance as “incredibly trim”, although he fluffed his lines having been presented the best opportunity of the first half.

The striker was replaced by Peter Crouch for the second period as Hughes retained the same shape. Giannelli Imbula, Glen Johnson and new signing Josh Tymon were also introduced.

It was Belgian starlet Thibaud Verlinden – promoted to the first team squad for 2017/18 – who provided the spark that led to the match’s decisive moment when his 87th-minute cross was diverted into his own goal by the unfortunate Mustafa Sejmenoviฤ‡.

Hughes seemed happy with the win and overall performance, explaining the intention behind his line-ups.

“We mixed it up tonight with some young guns and some more senior lads, and I think that was the right thing to do. We are just getting started, and it is all about getting the minutes on the pitch, getting the timing of your play right and I saw quite a bit of that tonight which is satisfying.”

However, the Potters boss is likely to have been distracted by confirmation of the transfer request submitted by Arnautovic earlier that day.

With a renewed bid from West Ham United looming, this threatens to cast a shadow over pre-season preparations, with Arnautovic a crucial component of the Stoke attack.

Hughes’ post-match response to the news indicated this was perhaps not a situation that will quickly be resolved.

“Marko and his people have put in a transfer request, but that happens on occasions. Any comings and goings are at our discretion, and it’s our decision ultimately. Players can express an opinion or a view in terms of where they see their future but at the end of the day contracted players are contracted to the club and ultimately we have the final say.”

Arnautovic limped off after the first half in Switzerland and it remains to be seen if yesterday’s breaking story impacts on his pitch-time in the fixtures to come.

Stoke’s next Uhrencup encounter is against BSC Young Boys on Wednesday.

Stoke City XI First Half: Butland; Bardsley (Edwards 19), Shawcross, Sweeney, Pieters; Adam, Jarvis; Arnautovic, Bojan, Telford; Berahino.

Stoke City XI Second Half: Haugaard; Johnson, Wollscheid, Souttar, Tymon; Muniesa, Imbula; Ngoy, Shenton (Campbell 80), Verlinden; Crouch.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

With the free hit chip, is the value of your existing squad applicable? As in, if you have a selling value of £103m, you can create a free hit team up to that value? Or will it be £100m?

I'd imagine it would have to be your current team's selling value that sets the ceiling for you FH squad value. Adds another dimension as you might have to factor in expected rises/falls of both your current players and your FH target players

Great Article ๐Ÿ™‚ I like this new chip, it can be used in a number of differing strategies: Blanks, Doubles, 1 week fixture turns, key H2H fixtures, in season cup games, and blocking at the end of the season. Should provide some variation over the usual chip = dgw strategies, even though that may well be the best use of it in terms of OR.

        Thanks dude!

Yeah agreed. This is just my initial take but it could be that the chip is used for something entirely different

        1. The Rumour Mill
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

          No worries!

It was my initial take too, and I think as a way of achieving best OR (the "purest" form of the game), your strategy looks a sound one. I'm just thinking, I'm in quite a few mini leagues, of various styles (classic,H2H, last man standing, cups within leagues), and that I can see a number of opportunities of how to use this chip, for both me and my opponents, its quite exciting! And affects the game more than the limited AOA chip ever did.

I feel this chip differs in style to BB and TC, in that they appear so geared up to DGW's in terms of boosting OR, whereas this feels more geared up to Blanks. Although i can also see this being great for mini DGW's, if id have this last season, bringing in some UTD, boro, and palace for GW34 only would have been perfect!

I disagree - I cannot see how it is not an absolute no-brainer to use this new chip FA Cup Quarter Final weekend

          • 7 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

At this point in time, sure, that looks the best use of it. But it completely depends on what this season throws at us! We could have a harsh winter with multiple postponements, my team may be decimated by injury and suspension for one week, I might really fancy one team to destroy another, etc.

Not everyone plays for OR either, for example I'm in a number of H2H mini leagues, it may be that I and my opponents want to beat each other in certain key matches. We also run a cup ourselves from GW21 to GW25, those who are nowhere in the league may go all out for the cup, using their chips then, this new chip helps them with that.

I think this new chip will benefit us experienced managers and not the casuals.

A few factors to note though.

    1. Will the new team be picked on the original value of the players that they started or the price they will currently be at when using the chip. If the latter then maybe an argument to use it earlier to get a better team out?

    2. Will the chip count as a transfer like the WC so if you use it then the following week your transfer doesn't roll over?

    1. Rum Ham
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

      1. I would suspect it would work as if you were using a wildcard at the time i.e. your current TV and the current prices of players.

      2. Again as a wildcard I suspect it would take a free transfer off you for the following week.

Maybe. Thing is, you'll probably sell him just before he goes on a run of starts or something. I'd love to have him (as I'm sure would everyone) but I doubt I can build a squad to support a 7.0m risk. And I don't have the patience to just keep and play him every week

I'm hoping he'll be a Conte regular for the first 5-7 GW's, bag 45 points in the first 7 GW's, a 0.6m price rise then flog him on first WC before secong int break, just as haz is coming back/fab is losing his place. At 7.0 there really is limited downside & huge upside imo

Will hazard be out for that long then?
And also, if he plays well, will conte keep him in the team? I actually think Chelsea might struggle a bit this season, especially to start with, and conte will need to turn to players like cesc, to bring some stability/experience in to play

But the game isn't released, so what's wrong with the info?

Only been back a few hours and I'm already in rant mode.
Seen a lot moaning bout how this new chip will help the so called casuals. Why is everyone so desperate to beat people who've no idea what they're doing? Embrace it and try to pick some good players, this will always be the best strategy

We’ll always have the advantage over “casuals” – what this new chip will probably do is align strategies more for non-casuals as playing this new chip on FACQF weekend seems an absolute no-brainer, which means most will have the same team that GW (yawn), and most will use the same WC/DGW chip strategy towards the end of the season. Some people will like this, some won’t. But yes, it is the same for everyone so I think after an initial reaction it is just a case of get on with it ๐Ÿ™‚

Plenty will have spunked the chip long before FACQW week

Exactly - by definition casuals won't be active when a possible GW with blanks occurs in February/March, or when DGWs happen later on.

Them announcing that new bullshit chip today probably means the game will launch tomorrow, not today.

    Agreed?

How can you call it a bullshit chip when you don't even know what it is?

"Fantasy Premier League returns *this week* with a new chip that will transform managers' season strategies."

This is probably reading into it way too much, but this quote was taken from the article wrote today. If it was going to be released today they wouldn't have said 'this week'. Probably being overscrupulous, I'm just a skeptic.

Begovic/ Gomes is a nice rotation, and I think both defences will improve, Bournemouth with the new recruits and Watford at home under Silva

At least we won't have to piss around prioritising BGW players for 5-6weeks leading up to a BGW anymore. No surprise this coincided with a dip in point gathering form for me as I looked to bring in the likes of Brunters, Phillips et all last year.

But that is exactly what we want to be doing to get ahead of 'casuals' who do not care about the fixtures 4-5 weeks ahead. If we do not take advantage of that information, how are we going to lord it over them casuals? ๐Ÿ˜€
