The Weekend Team News

Fantasy managers are eagerly awaiting the afternoon press conferences with Pep Guardiola expected to provide an update on the status of Sergio Aguero, who has returned to full training following a rib injury.

This follows Aguero’s post on social media yesterday, where he declared himself “ready” to return for the visit of Stoke City.

With Aguero possibly in contention, Guardiola’s attacking options and configurations look far more difficult to predict. Today’s conference will hopefully offer more clarity on his likely squad and line-up.

For Stoke, Joe Allen is unavailable for the Etihad trip having suffered concussion that forced him off during Wales’ midweek clash with Republic of Ireland. The midfielder has missed training this week as part of the protocol surrounding the nature of the injury, with manager Mark Hughes ruling him out this morning. Defender Bruno Martins-Indi may also miss out, while skipper Ryan Shawcross continues to progress with an ongoing back muscle injury and remains sidelined. However, Jese Rodriguez is back in contention after missing the previous Gameweek for personal reasons.

Elsewhere, Liverpool will need to restructure their three-man frontline after Sadio Mane was ruled out of tomorrow’s home meeting with Manchester United due to a hamstring injury.

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, is set to be without Marouane Fellaini, who picked up a knee injury while on international duty.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the home clash against West Ham United, but Jonathan Walters remains sidelined with a knee injury.

Pedro Obiang and Edimilson Fernandes look set to be available for that trip to Turf Moor, while Manuel Lanzini could be poised for a first start of the season.

N’Golo Kante is expected to miss Chelsea’s trip to Crystal Palace due to a hamstring injury, while Antonio Conte’s press conference this afternoon will hopefully shed some light on Alvaro Morata’s similar problem.

And the Eagles are
sweating over their first-choice stopper Wayne Hennessey, who is set for scans after sustaining an injury on international duty for Wales.

Swansea City head coach Paul Clement revealed that Wilfried Bony is “50/50 to start” against Huddersfield Town due to a hamstring injury, but Renato Sanches is unlikely to be available.

Midfielder Danny Williams is available for the trip to south Wales following a foot injury, while Steve Mounie has a chance of being named in the matchday squad.

Younes Kaboul remains sidelined ahead of Watford’s home meeting with Arsenal, while Sebastian Prodl is still doubtful to face the Gunners. Isaac Success has been ruled out for between six and eight weeks with a knee injury.

Arsene Wenger has a number of concerns at the back for the Vicarage Road encounter. Shkodran Mustafi will miss the trip, while Sead Kolasinac (hip) and Laurent Koscielny (achilles) will undergo fitness tests today. Mesut Ozil (knee) and Danny Welbeck (groin) are back in full training and in contention to face the Hornets.

Josh King and Ryan Fraser face late assessments on hamstring complaints as Bournemouth make their way to face Spurs at Wembley Stadium. Eddie Howe has conceded that Brad Smith is set for a stint on the sidelines after picking up “a nasty injury” on duty for Australia over the break.

For Spurs, Mauricio Pochettino looks set to be boosted by the return of both Erik Lamela and Danny Rose. Both joined full training this week although the Cherries visit will likely come too soon for the duo.

Davy Propper is expected to be fit for Brighton & Hove Albion’s home encounter against Everton, with the midfielder recovering from a hip problem suffered while on international duty.

Midfielders Matt Ritchie (thigh), Christian Atsu (knee) and Jonjo Shelvey (hand) are all minor injury concerns ahead of Newcastle United’s trip to Southampton, with Rafa Benitez set to provide an update on the trio in his press conference later today.

Wilfred Ndidi is available for the home fixture against West Bromwich Albion, while Jamie Vardy has fully recovered from a hip problem.

James Morrison, Hal Robson-Kanu and Nacer Chadli are all slight injury concerns ahead of Monday’s visit to the King Power Stadium.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of this tomorrow’s 11.30am deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream for breaking news – as the day unfolds, we will issue updates from Friday’s press conferences and refresh our Team News tab accordingly to keep you informed.

    Play Jones or Tom Carroll?

I'm on the latter mainly as I have no Liverpool players, so a blank from them would help me a bit over a missed Jones CS.

      Two of them. 🙂

Sanchez - less than 3% ownership and could well turn a lot of assumptions on their heads in the next 3 weeks.

VVD - could easily bag a 15-pointer this week and has 4 great fixtures upcoming. Less than 2% ownership.

An honourable mention for Batsman as well.

It seems to me that there are two really good reasons for using the first wildcard.

    1. When your teams is full of injurys and awful players and you would happily swap 5+ of them.

    2. To take advantage of a major shift in information we have about major players. This could be Kane being injured for 3 months, or a very cheap player suddenly becoming a must have points machine. With this extra information, it is then possible to spread your funds accordingly, and set up your team structure for the next 2-3 months.

The one thing you want in this second senatio is some certainty about big players. The one thing you don’t want is uncertainty about big players.

I can’t help but feel a lot of people have triggered their wildcard this week at exactly the wrong time. There is more uncertainty around a lot of big players than at any point except gw1.

Surely it pays to wait until there is a clear sense of who the must have 5 or 6 players are. I still don’t think we are there yet.

you would play a WC to swap an injured kane?

Well, I think most of us probably feel Kane is essential right now. If he was suddenly out for 3 months you now have 12.6 million to spend elsewhere. You could spread that money it lots of ways.

In gw1 I made some very tasty looking Kane-less teams.

However I do think Kane is essential.

cant see that justifying a WC
likely you would get 10.5-11.5 replacement but even if you went to 8.5 you are more likely to want to spend the 4 mill on upgrade of mid so only two transfers

            Yeah, fair enough.

I guess my thought is that using a Willard card is for fixing a horribly broken team

Or...bringing in players you are happy to keep for the next 2-3 months.

Right now the only player I am certain I want for the long term is Kane

We've had this so many times before.

Those that wildcard at a particular time defend that to the hilt. those who wildcard earlier or later look to find fault in the time others wildcard.

I've done it myself on the Scoutcast for the GWK 3 wildcarders.

But the truth is that wildcard timing is personal to everyone.

If it feels right do it.

I can't think of a single time when there has been 100% certainty about anyone. There are always issues around rotation around CL with the big teams.

The key this time though is the fixture swing and the emergence of a four man defence being important. Both good enough reasons for me - certainly better than in GWK 3, which had no fixture swing.

Will GWK 12 be a better time? Time will tell, but I'd be surprised if there is 100% certainty over big name players then either - especially with xmas rotation looming.

Take a look at the schedule this year and then come back to this.

This year has the most congested December schedule ever.... we have never seen anything like it before.

        Fair points all,

However, just you say that 4 defenders is now important, but just two or three game weeks ago, the consensus was that three big strikers was going to be that way forward.

        Injury’s changed that very quickly.

I do accept that there is no perfect time to wildcard and it is indeed personal.

It just seems like this is quite a bad time to wildcard. I don’t see the strategic advantage.

I didn’t Wildcard this week because I felt the players I really want were still a few weeks from being fit e.g. Aguero and Morata. This would mean filling my team with players I don’t really want and will have to transfer out soon anyway which isn’t ideal for someone who has played a WC. I agree a Wildcard is personal because I had injuries too.

I still think three big strikers is still important.

And the need to ensure you have budget up top is key...even if two of the main protagonists have doubt.

There's still Kane, Lukaku, Vardy, Jesus to consider. ...plus ensuring you have a plan for Aguero or Morata if you desire.

As said - this debate over wildcard timing will rumble on.

Good luck whenever you do it.

            Thank you sir,

I was thinking along your lines of wild-carding this week, but when I played around with it, I just didn’t feel confident I’d actually improved my team that much.

Still too many unanswered questions for me.

I defo have 2 or 3 players I want rid of but that didn’t feel like cause enough for wildcarding without some very clear information on who the go to players are.

            I’m just waiting it out.

            Good luck with yours!

I actually agree with coffee geek on the fact that this week was not the right time to wildcard given the uncertainty of Morata and Kun + the fact that it is way to.obvious to wc during a IB = very few risers and an even fewer double risers..

I wildcarded after gw1 when I realised there were cheaper options around the block that would.enable me to free up funds... (had DDG - brought in foster and jones instead as an example). Also made me catch all the early rdouble risers as people took severe hits.instead of wc... really influenced the price changes to my advantage

I've always preferred to use my WC when there's the maximum amount of information to be leveraged. Usually this means a long time period where crucial information may be revealed, key and point, international breaks. While it's awfully boring to survive those two weeks, there's so much information you get regarding your players (playtime, injuries, form etc) that I feel using a WC off that info is a great moment. It doesn't always make the decisions easier (e.g Hazard's form or Aguero's recovery this IB), but it allows flexibility to mold your team by Saturday noon.

      1. Coffee-Geek
        • 9 Years

        This is exactly my point,

Surely we have more unanswered questions now, than at the beginning of the international break.

There is uncertainty over Aguero, Jesus, Kolasinac, Morata, Firmino etc. Which actually makes it harder to form a team you are confident it longer term.

Seems some people did it thinking they could make money out of it and only ended up making about 4 changes. I use mine when I need an overhaul.

I made 11 changes after Southampton provided difficult to judge at CB, West Ham/Palace proved to be hopeless. Kane was ditched for 1 week to save the 0.1 and Lukaku was binned for Morata/Firmino.

Subsequently, mine has paid off in terms of points but injuries have gone against me. Nevertheless it's worked out well for me as I've ditched players who's values have dropped and gone for Forster/Jones/Richarlison/Kane/Morata who have brought good returns.

As long as your team needs surgery and you don't want a -12, then the wildcard is right. If it's solely for 2 or 3 City/Chelsea players then maybe hold and plan transfers instead.

I prefer to wildcard around fixture shifts. Most problems can be fixed with a hit or two and I am loathe to waste my wildcard simply because I have one or two major issues.

This season I activated my wildcard in GW7 because although there wasn't anything very much wrong with my squad there were a number of sideways moves I would have liked to make that would never have been worth a transfer on their own. My main reason for playing it though was that a lot of the players I wanted were rising that week and I was about to be priced out of a good team.

Use the wildcard too early and you are acting on too little data. Wait too long and you will have already fixed most of your issues with transfers and will have a poor TV.

Not sure when Pep's conference is

Aguero - 5 goals and 3 assists in 1 lesser game compared to other nominees, yet he doesn't win the Player of the Month award. 😆

Always criminally underlooked, especially for team of the year PFA etc awards. Sadly because he's just quiet and gets on with it he doesn't get recognised, injuries don't help either but they do make his records more spectacular

almost every year there is a striker or two that contributes more than him over the season. if u make a team of the last 5 seasons he'll walk into it but the timing of his good periods doesnt help

got half of his attacking returns in game they'd won anyway. context

Ended up as the player with most attacking returns, helping his team to 3 points in each of the game he was a part of.

It'll be just our luck to load up on Che DF's and for CP to score their first league goal of the season. Kante out too 🙁

thoughts on delph as a 4.5mid option, if hes fit. yes he's reverse OOP but playing in an attacking side, will get forward and good fixtures. any other better 4.5 for next few gws?

Can see the thinking behind it but it all depends on how many minutes he actually gets
