Scout Notes – Swans Keep Salah In Check

Mohamed Salah endures a frustrating night at the Liberty Stadium as Swansea City spring a surprise and put Gameweek 24 to bed with a 1-0 win over Liverpool.

Handed the armband by 13.8% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers and 19 of the top 100, the Egyptian was second only to Harry Kane in the Gameweek 24 captaincy race.

As expected, Salah boasted the Merseysiders’ main goal threat on south Wales but, for once, his finishing let him down, with just of one five goal attempts on target.

In a sense, the Egyptian was a victim of his own relentless consistency last night – a failure to get among the points was only the second time in his last 14 league appearances that he’s served up a blank.

For all the disappointment, showdowns against Huddersfield, Southampton, West Ham and Newcastle in the next five Gameweeks, his 54.8% ownership will be confident of a quick return to form.

Roberto Firmino backers will be a little more concerned, though, with last night’s blank a third in four appearances.

Granted, one of those was an outing off the bench at Burnley but with many now looking to acquire Sergio Aguero up front, the Brazilian – who was drafted in by a hefty 275,000+ managers for the Swansea encounter – is already among the top five players for transfers out over the last 24 hours. That is somewhat typical of the fickle market when it comes to forwards this season.

Again, you’d expect Firmino to profit from that upcoming batch of fixtures, though last night’s result will perhaps give many managers food for thought when considering doubling on the Reds’ attack.

Swansea may well have revealed the template tactics to counter a Coutinho-less Liverpool, and David Wagner will obviously be well versed in coping with Jurgen Klopp’s pressing game when they face off in Gameweek 25. It remains to be seen if the Huddersfield defence – which has faltered badly of late – can be as successful as the Swans.

Van Dijk shows intent

Virgil van Dijk’s league debut didn’t quite go to plan after his attempted header from a corner eventually led to Swansea’s winner.

Yet the Dutchman’s impact on the Reds’ play was easy to see. With the home side sitting deep, he was afforded space to forage forward and made an eye-catching 113 successful passes at the Liberty.

His influence in the final third caught the eye.

While the likes of Salah and Firmino struggled to step up in their first away match since the departure of Philippe Coutinho, it was Van Dijk who turned chief creator – he laid on two big chances only for his new-mates to spurn both.

In terms of goal threat, only Salah bettered him for shots (five to three) and efforts in the box (three to two), underlining his attacking potential for the Merseysiders.

While Van Dijk posed a major threat, the same can’t be said for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Another popular trade for Gameweek 24, he earned over 110,000 transfers in after recording a goal and assist in the 4-3 win over Man City.

Although he retained his starting role last night, the former Arsenal man fired two long-range efforts, both off-target, before being replaced midway through the second-half.

On a positive note for his owners, he shared corners with Salah with Coutinho out of the picture – the pair took four apiece.

Fabianski shows value

The Welsh side continue to build momentum under new manager Carlos Carvalhal, claiming a second win in four matches since his appointment.

Having lost 5-0 at Anfield in Paul Clement’s fixture in Gameweek 20, Swansea’s clean sheet – their seventh of the season – was all the more surprising and suggests that their bid to beat the drop has some substance to it.

After combing for the hosts’ goal, central defensive pair Alfie Mawson and Federico Fernandez were the big winners, returning 15 and 11 points respectively.

Between the posts, though, Lukas Fabianski can count himself a little unlucky not to claim the maximum bonus.

Benched by over 284,000 of his 7.4% owners, the Pole made four saves and 14 recoveries for a score of 31 in the Bonus Points System (BPS), top for keepers in Gameweek 24.

He delivered an eighth successive save point and has now made a stop every 23.2 minutes, quicker than any keeper with more than one start this season.

Priced at just 4.6, Fabianski is now second only to David De Gea among FPL keepers, level with Man City’s Ederson on 100 points. Indeed, in terms of points per million, the Swansea stopper is now the number one value player in FPL, with 21.7.

While clashes with Arsenal, Leicester and Burnley could deter many to invest, the Swans’ schedule turns far kinder in Gameweek 28 and could yet bring them into contention.

They face Brighton, West Ham, Huddersfield, Southampton, West Brom and Everton over a run of seven Gameweeks that looks vital to their survival plight.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

As with Pogba, Jose will play Sanchez. You don't sign a £400k/wk player and then bench him.

He is a proven goal scorer and this move will give him a huge boost psychologically. I expect him to be 100% and hit the ground running wide left or behind Lukaku.

I bought Christensen before Xmas because (1) conte stopped favouring Davis Luiz (2) Luiz was injured for foreseeable future (3) Christensen appeared nailed, starting over Cahill.

Then he got ill over Xmas and none of these points appear valid any more. The head injury was unfortunate but he’s been fit and was rotated nevertheless. For same price pick a nailed player like jones or Van Dijk.

Ive had Kun for a few GWs now and the advice was you cant have such an expensive forward alongside another expensive forward such as Kane as you cant captain both ie its a waste of cash. When does that argument become redundant though when you factor in the differential value of the second pricey forward and the foexibility to captain either one against poor opposition?

Thats my point really. If you trust your cheaper players why not have 3 hugely expensive consistent point scorers.

            6 years, 3 months ago

It comes down to the concept of ppm-value (or ppmpm... :/). If you buy in to this concept then you captain your most expensive asset. If you don't buy in to it then you don't have the super expensive assets if cheaper ones are outscoring them over all.

            1. Captain Roberto
              • 6 Years
              6 years, 3 months ago

              oops, that's wrong.

ppm/value - Captain most expensive asset

Just want highest scorers then buy all the most expensive assets IF they are on form.

This will weaken your team over all UNLESS you have an enabler who is hitting above their weight.

      1) Is the template broken?

      2) Will you be doing the Kane-Aguero hokey-cokey?

      3) In the last 4 Gameweeks, Mahrez has a 50% goal conversion. Can he maintain that?

      4) Why was Fabianski feeding Jonty so many jam sandwiches last night?

      5) Partial clean sheet bonuses are used without incident in Telegraph Fantasy Football. Are they long overdue in FPL? Why persist with an inflexible rule like the 60 minute clean sheet rule which seems to do nothing but enrage people?

      6) Can Liverpool be relied upon against teams that concede possession and defend deep?

      7) Can Sanchez justify his price tag?

      8) Does Christensen have a Voodoo curse?

      9) Will Hazard get his usual 200 points this season?

      10) Are we being too impatient with low threshold players like Lingard?

Is Shaqiri a good option? In the past he’s always been injury prone and normally only scores worldies which is not good for FPL potential. However, if you watched the game on MOTD, he certainly passed the eye test playing in a threatening central role. Stoke have great fixtures as well.

      A question about the use of predictive models;

There is a wealth of data out there, and it's easy to be blinded by it all.

So, when is the best time to employ the use of xG models? And when might it be better to consider recent/longer term team form, or historical match-ups between teams that are facing one another? When do you simply allow the bookies' odds to guide you?

I'd be interested to know whether any of the Scouts have a strategy for selecting predictive models based on fixture types (big team clashes/David and Goliath situations/Derbies/Bogey teams, etc.).

Is there too much focus on the double gameweeks? We are stil a month away from potential doubles and people seem to be throwing all their eggs into that basket already.

Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool have a great run of fixtures and yet, people seem wary of transfering in players that potentially have blanks in the distant future.

Is it possible that you can do your team (overal rank) more damage by thinking too far ahead?

Its not inconceivable that we have a DGW26 for fixtures rearranged as a result of the Carabao Cup Final. Or maybe they will still be played midweek in GW28. Personally, I would rather have some informed Scoutcast advice on this than another hour on the template.

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 8 Years

They have never been played the midweek after - the midweek is reserved for FA Cup replays and would be unfair to the finalists to play a few days later against their direct rivals that have had a 10 day rest - probably GW37 which generally mops things up but by no means certain

That makes sense although fairness isn't always the primary consideration when it comes to fixture scheduling. The midweek after GW26 is also clear apart from FA Cup 4th Round replays, so provided Man City progress in the Carabao Cup, and avoid a FA Cup replay, it is possible for Arsenal-City to be rearranged for midweek in GW26; and something similar did happen last year. If Chelsea progress in the Carabao Cup an added complication would be that they are already scheduled for MNF in GW26.

I wouldn’t count out a cheeky mini double game week somewhere like the City v Stoke last year, but it is highly unlikely that the GW28 midweek will be used to play the blank games missed by the League Cup finalists

A DGW for City shortly before a blank game week would be hilarious 🙂

      Final question from me:

Is there too much focus on one formation? I've heard this all season, talk of a formation that one should aim for.

      why?

You have 15 players at your disposal, 11 to play each week. Would it not be better to have a good balance in the squad, allowing you to shift formation and rotate your squad as you see fit?

I see a lot of RMT's with a great 11, but a very weak bench. Seems like those teams would only do well every other week, as you have away/home games, rest and rotation issues and so forth.

With a lot of value in defense and good cheap options in midfield, is it perhaps better to not focus too much on one formation, but rather having a solid squad all around that leaves for a lot of flexibility?

Has last week's "breaking the template" question been replied by Agüero?

Is the only/most effective way to break the template, to find a double digit scoring captain against the non-double digit scoring most selected captain?

If you dare find that, go for it.

      Otherwise remain with the template.

how do we think silvas sacking and garcias appointment will work out for our fantasy options? both for people still holding watford defenders and more importantly richarlson as a possible lingard/ arnie replacement, considering they have decent upcoming fixtures.

If Arnautovic is out, is Shaqiri the best replacement?

Also, is it worth transferring out another one of the template midfielders (Son, Lingard) for a hit (to Mahrez for example) or should we keep the faith through the upcoming fixtures to see how sides settle down (e.g. Son's form through tough matches and Lingard gametime following Sanchez transfer).

Aguero is owned by 8 out of the top 10 in the FPL Game, but only owned by 3 out of 20 in the FFS mods & Cons.

Did we miss a trick (as a community) with not bringing in Aguero and was it to do with maintaining team value rather than solid honest FPL points reasons?

7 of the current FPL top 10 own Aguero, but only 3 of these were in the FPL top 10 last week.
And only 2 of these 7 brought him in this week - the other 5 owned him already.
It worked out well for Aguero owners this week, but it might not have done - they just got luckier than the non-owners.
Owning Aguero does appear to be a decent option, but not necessarily a better one.

He is only owned by 4 of the 31 players in FFS Mods and Cons, and they are not doing any better than the non-owners.
But it is perhaps a bit surprising that there isn't more variety in this mini-league.
There is a certain amount of herd mentality and group-thinking in FFS.
Many of us have a tendency to stick to what has worked well in previous seasons, or to be over-influenced by the advice of others, whereas newcomers to the upper reaches of the FPL rankings might perhaps be more inclined to try something different, and some of them strike lucky.

I don't think it has much to do with maintaining team value - probably more to do with formations and planning and balanced teams and not wasting transfers.

Thanks and I think you have nicely made my point 🙂

Players (in the top 100 say ?) brought in Aguero and reaped the rewards. This was not however by ripping up their team but simply with 2 transfers, mainly Firmino and a Spurs mid or defender transferred out it seems (losing value in Firmino?). Quite a few of those that already owned him brought him in for Morata in recent weeks and obviously he was historically held by some too.

I have seen this ‘not wanting to rip up the team’ as a reason for not getting Aguero but this is really just an excuse because 2 transfers is not ‘ripping up a team’. A quick check of a few scouts indicates they could have quite easily done the same and have recently themselves not been averse to taking 2 transfers and hits when it suited. Holding on to Firmino seemed to be the stumbling block, which may be more a mixture of value & form than just form related ?

You again make my point nicely by identifying that only 1 out of 31 in the FFS Mods & Cons brought him in for the fixtures and only 3 already owned him. In comparison Aguero was brought in to 2 of the original top 10, 6 of the current top 31 and is owned by maybe about 16 of the top 31.

Which ever way you cut it, players in the top 100 of the game reacted in much higher numbers and brought him in, compared to the FFS community and certainly the FFS formal contributors.

Not criticising any one, just identifying a different mindset and trying to understand why one elite group of players reacted and brought in Aguero (or owned him) and another elite group did not. I think you hit the nail on the head though when you referred to the FFS herd mentality, which is perhaps the natural conclusion ? 😉

Is it time for a mini wildcard?
      Change Son, Lingard, Arnie
      Improve Defense
      Improve frontline

Only 14 game weeks left. If you average 10 pts a game week over rivals that makes up 140 points.

Only my third season, but seems to be to be the season where 'Luck', or bad luck has had the largest impact by some distance...

Rotation and Injuries (and suspensions to a degree) have completely plagued my season - After GW24, having played my 22 free transfers (and 10 hits...), I've already shipped out 16 injuries or suspensions (excluding those shipped out on GW8 wildcard...not to mention Barca bound Coutinho), and even now I have RLC and Arnie gloomily looking up at me. 😯

Don't get me started on Christensen... 🙁

How do Scoutcasters deal with such a degree of misfortune and a lack of opportunity for form a longer term strategy as it constantly falls apart at the first hurdle...??

Does Alexis Sanchez's arrival at Man City lessen the appeal of other City players due to the points being spread around even more players? Or will it have the opposite effect and increase interest by tripling up on City perhaps?

Will the addition of Sanchez add even more uncertainty and rotation risks for FPL managers? Sanchez played in more than one position at Arsenal. Reading Pep's mind was difficult enough before Sanchez came in.

He has looked good this season, much less flaky than in the past. I think the China issue taught him to get his head on straight maybe.

Only issue is how often Rafa will start him. And in what position. If he is used as a wide forward (his natural position) then he could do very well but he has to supplant Atsu, Ritchie, Murphy in that case. I suspect he may struggle for gametime.

I think he’ll walk into our team! Left back is a big issue for us, but he might go left wing! Atsu and Murphy are very inconsistent and Ritchie is far to slow for the prem! He’ll play almost every second of every game IMO

    Alonso, Otamendi, Ogbonna (Tomkins, Duffy)
    Salah, Sterling, Son, Mahrez, Milijovevic
    Kane, Firmino (Ayew)

    Thoughts?
I personally think Son shouldn't be written off just because he is playing good teams, he should still attract attacking points.

I took him in on the.middle of a great run. He then went 1-1-0 and i ditched him at which point he started scoring 6-11 most weeks again. Based on that i was too annoyed to get him back in but my advise would be dont knee jerk and hold. He looks like scoring from free kicks and corners almost every game and ull be annoyed when he inevitably hoovers up points again

How about you all just stop asking questions about Arnautovic and actually wait?

There's 7 days until next Gameweek begins as well as League Cup and FA Cup football to play before then.

Arnie, Alli and Kane out for -4 leaves 29.5m to play with. Need to think about differentials. Think it's finally time to use the membership for once.

          - Do we swap kane for aguero for a few weeks, swap back for GW 28 when Aguero is missing and Jesus is likely to be back (probably what i will be doing)

          - Do we trust in Eden 'Mr Illusive' hazard?

          - is Arnie injured? ...
...if so who is the better option :
Richarlison growing under new management and the new manager effect vs Willian, who will now be in first 11 because of Conte's realisation that the 3-4-2-1 is better than the 3-5-1-1

League Cup semi-final away goals count double.

...but only if the second leg goes to extra time.

...so the team arbitrarily picked away in the second leg (e.g. Chelsea) might have an extra half an hour to score a goal worth 2 goals.

              How is that fair?
