Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 25

The magic of the FA Cup is back in its false-bottomed box, next to the rabbit and the pack of marked cards, leaving us to enjoy three straight Gameweeks of unadulterated Fantasy bliss.

We start with two nights of midweek action involving plum home ties for Man City and Chelsea, while Spurs entertain Man United to cool most, if not all, of the interest in assets from that particular pair.

Our ‘expert’ panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars Mark, Paul and Jonty and Career Hall of Fame luminary Peter Kouwenberg have all spent big on the stars from Pep Guardiola’s and Antonio Conte’s teams, requiring more budget-friendly picks across midfield and at the back.

Among the bargain buys being mooted are Southampton, Crystal Palace and Stoke City players, with the latter’s home match against Watford promoting the stock of Xherdan Shaqiri and even sparking a rare Scout Squad mention for Mame Diouf and a possible Picks debut for Moritz Bauer.

We’ll be back to unveil who makes the final Scout Picks team on Tuesday, leaving you with the thoughts behind the Scouts’ initial selections in the meantime.

Peter Says…

Subject to FA Cup exertions, I’m inevitably drawn to Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea host a Bournemouth side which has conceded more goals (12) than any other team over the last six matches.

And then there’s the Etihad Stadium, where a somewhat more obdurate West Brom defence will be sorely tested by the top home scorers in the league (42 goals).

I also fancy post-Sanchez Arsenal to overcome Swansea City after my Forest team kindly provided them with a welcome break over the FA Cup weekend, but anticipate that I may face accusations of chasing last week’s points by selecting Nacho Monreal.

Despite the Swans’ success last Monday, only four teams have kept Liverpool at bay this season and I don’t fancy Huddersfield to become the fifth.

I’m confident daddy-Klopp can prevail against mini-Klopp and that the former’s fab three (including Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino) will be firing on all cylinders once more.

With some highly predictable names already in, the more interesting task is padding the squad with some players from the lesser lights of the Premier League.

In the hunt for clean sheets, I call in at St James’ Park and St Mary’s Stadium to pick up some budget defensive players.

Brighton are also potentially vulnerable to set-pieces, bringing Maya Yoshida into my thoughts if he can reclaim his starting berth.

Meanwhile, with the joint highest headed attempts for defenders (15), I’m getting tired of listening to the phrase “Ben Mee heads just over” and hope that he will finally break his scoring duck.

Jonty Says…

Contrary to popular belief, Sergio Aguero was heavily backed by the Scouts last Gameweek ahead of his hosting of Newcastle.

Mark, Paul and I all listed him as second choice in our striker selection behind Harry Kane, who was facing a Southampton side he scored a hat-trick against over Christmas.

In the end we left the Argentinian marksman out due to price constraints, but following his treble against the Magpies, I’ve promoted him to top choice this time around.

Kane earns a cursory last place mention. His home encounter with a Manchester United side that has kept a record 14 clean sheets this season should see him miss the cut.

In fact, the Spurs striker only sneaks a mention due to the lack of other credible striking options this Gameweek.

In contrast, there looks to be a wealth of strong midfield prospects, which makes me think a 3-5-2 formation may be required.

Shaqiri looks to offer good value in the centre of the park in a new-look Stoke City attack. Over the last two Gameweeks, only Kane has had more on target shots than the Swiss mini-maestro.

I’m also backing the Leicester City attack to get the better of Everton at Goodison Park, with Big Sam’s defensive bus currently failing it’s MOT.

I’d like to see one of Riyad Mahrez or Jamie Vardy included, with the Algerian my preference. He’s scored three goals over the Foxes’ last six road trips, while Vardy has contributed just one.

Eden Hazard’s five goals in six appearances against Bournemouth makes him a shoo-in when the Cherries drop by Stamford Bridge. Mr Consistency, Marcos Alonso, is another essential Blues pick as he looks to deliver points for the ninth Gameweek in a row.

In addition, there looks to be some strong budget options at the back to consider, among them Southampton’s Yoshida.

The centre-back’s set-piece threat is clear. He’s scored both his goals from corners and fired off 16 close-range efforts this term, which will come in handy against a Brighton side that remains fragile from dead-balls.

Paul Says…

As usual, I’ve scoured for some differential picks as budget options to go along with the usual big-hitters.

At home to a Brighton side that’s failed to score in their last six road trips, Southampton’s defence could be worth backing.

Costing just 4.4, Alex McCarthy has started the last four Gameweeks and is a cheaper option than the fit-again Yoshida if we’re struggling for budget.

All five of the Saints’ league clean sheets have arrived with the Japan international in their XI, and his return to action helped them to a 1-0 FA Cup win over Watford at the weekend.

Stoke have the chance to register a second straight win under Paul Lambert as Watford make their way to the bet365 Stadium in midweek.

The Hornets have two goals in their last five on the road, which could bring new right-back Bauer into contention at 4.5.

Handed his debut in Gameweek 23, the Austrian is ranked second among defenders for key passes (three) in the last two rounds of fixtures. As ever, the creativity of Shaqiri will be vital, while his close-range goal threat caught the eye last weekend – all three of his efforts against Watford were inside the box and on target.

Elsewhere, I’d be reluctant to overlook the Spurs attack at home to Man United at Wembley – the Red Devils may have served up four clean sheets, but no side have allowed more shots inside the box (36) over that period.

If there’s no space for Kane, Son Heung-min – with a goal in seven of Spurs last eight in their temporary home – still merits consideration.

Goals could be on the menu as West Ham and Crystal Palace’s injury-hit squads collide at the London Stadium.

With the hosts’ options up front limited, Chicharito now looks a secure starter and found the net against Bournemouth in the previous Gameweeks.

Yet – against the odds – it’s Christian Benteke who is the in-form striker for this one. The Belgian has one goal, three assists and 21 FPL points in his last three road trips.

Mark Says…

With Aguero re-established as a sure-fire selection for Gameweek 25, it seems we’re destined for a big spend up front.

I’m still advocating Kane as his partner. For me, United’s defence continues to ride its luck, giving up too many shooting opportunities in the box. Even if we look at just the last two matches (both clean sheets), they’re ranked third behind only Everton and Southampton for penalty area shots conceded.

If Mourinho’s backline allows Kane some sighters, I think he’ll punish them. Much has been made of the difficulty of this fixture, but he scored in the corresponding match-up last season and I think he can repeat that.

I have a feeling that I’m going to get shouted down and, once again, it will be Roberto Firmino who joins team-mate Mohamed Salah in our selection.

I’ve not changed my views here – Liverpool have struggled both against Swansea and West Brom and, for all their frailties, Huddersfield also fit the profile of a team that will sit back and demand that Klopp’s men have the craft to unlock them. Liverpool will need an early goal, or I fear the points on offer could disappoint again.

I’ve ranked Firmino third in my striker selection but, ideally, I’d like to limit our XI to include just Salah.

If we do spend big, I think we’ve got enough cut-price options to fill the gaps. Stoke look destined to be well represented with Shaqiri looking a certainty in midfield. I’m even putting Mame Biram Diouf forward as an option for our third striker.

I’ve also stuck Bakary Sako in there. I see some joy for Palace at West Ham in a clash of two teams ravaged by injuries and a lack of confidence.

Sako has been started up front with Benteke for the Eagles and, over his two starts, he has fired six shots in the box – matching Salah and Anthony Martial as the top two FPL midfielders for that statistic.

The Community Champion

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 17 will be Pras United, who is in his eighth season and has finished in the top 10,000 twice.

The champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Gameweek 24’s champion Tommo1888 beat the Scouts 68-57.

The one to beat remains Gregor, who achieved victory over the Scouts by a 33-point margin in Gameweek 5.

Out of curiosity, is this the 'latest' template?
    DDG
    Alonso Ota Jones
    Salah Sterling Hazard Shaq Mahrez
    Kun Kane

Which players would you field as a differential, if the GW doesn't not go your way?

That lot would cost you 94.7.
If you add on 16.5 for the bench, that makes a total of 111.2, which is unaffordable by even the most valuable teams.

They are all popular choices, but no-one owns them all.

            Blatant manipulation.

The last time Salah reached his current ownership he was 10.0m. Now he is 10.3m. This is the result of him being prevented from falling in price when nearly 600k teams (at peak) dumped him. Now those 600k are being treated as new owners when they get him back after having sold him. 🙄

If that isn't a gerrymandered system I don't know what is. I could get quite angry about it if I were bothered. As it is I'll just make this comment and move on.

Is it not possible that overall ownership plays a role in prices?

All the examples of players not falling when they ‘should’ are high owned players.

Which makes sense, clearly Salah is still underpriced because vast majority of us would not blink to pay 10.3m if we did not already have him.

I’d prefer prices to be more ownership driven, rather than just transfer volumes. Would give mis-priced players like Sanchez a chance to fall to their market value and bring them back into the game.

And as Gnu says, that's really not the point I am making. The same applied with Kane (but not so extremely).

Someone said above that ownership should be taken into account in price changes. I'd have no objection to that. As long as it is consistent and applied evenly. Otherwise we don't have a fair market.

It's not a fair market anyway. People who have influence over the game are allowed to put a team in which to me is wrong. Good job there isn't a cash prize as I'm sure there would be rules against that no?

I agree it should be objectively rule/formula based, not subjectively opinion based which is obviously your main point.

It is not conclusive to me that this is not the case and it is quite hard to prove or disprove without the actual formula being published.

Flags have always distorted the market and price rises have historically been quantity based where as price falls are percentage based so transfers in are not the same as transfers out.

I’m not ruling it out, just inconclusive to me, would be happy for you or anyone to provide the evidence that makes you so certain fixing is happening.

There is no proof of manipulation of individual players' prices.
There are probably some additional rules that our price change forecast sites have not quite sussed out.
For example there may be a rule that where a popular player is clearly underpriced then his price will not drop even when he suffers large but probably temporary sales.
This does not necessarily require any gerrymandering - it could just be the result of some rule that we don't know about.
That rule might have been around since the beginning of the season or might have been introduced at a later stage, but either way it is likely to be a general rule applying to certain groups of players rather than to individuals.

If player's prices were to be reassessed according to their performances in the first half of the season then Salah's price would probably be rather higher than his present one - at least 12.0m. There could well be a rule that players who are clearly worth over 1.0m more than their current price do not drop in price, or something similar.

So we shouldn't complain about Salah costing 10.3m - he's still a bargain and cheaper than Kane, Aguero, Sanchez, Lukaku, Hazard and Morata, and the same price as Lacazette!

As soon as it becomes subjective - "clearly underpriced" - then that is manipulation. In addition, we'd no longer have a transfer-based system.

If FPL wanted to raise Salah's price by a back-door route then that is what they have successfully done. But in that case I'd like to see them lowering Sanchez' price at the same time. Because you can't possibly tell me that he has justified 12m or even the 11.7m he is now valued at this season. And before his move to United his ownership was incredibly low. Why didn't that lead to rapid falls then?

That's the problem, RL. There is something being applied to some players and not others. It gives a clear impression of a malfunctioning - if not gerrymandered - system.

Sanchez has more ownership than GW1 so a 0.3 discount seems fair.

I was referring to the "clearly under-priced" idea. If that is to be applied then it should work for "clearly over-priced" players too, no?

Actually my preference is for a transfer-based free market with no undue or artificial or (especially) subjective barriers to players rising and falling in price. If we had that there could be no complaint.

In Salah's case - http://prntscr.com/i6ys5n , being flagged was the issue as around 10% ownership sales need to happen for a drop for available players and double/triple for red flagged ones. As you can see -489K and -11K make -500K which is roughly 15% of the once 3.35m owners.

Plus the big sell off was during a WC and FH laden Double Game week where the requirements for fall/ rise in price requires a much greater delta.

It’s just one of those things .... didn’t falll with huge sales a few weeks ago due to circumstances described above, and is now rising with lower sales because those circumstances are removed or not applicable ?

FPL price changes depend on transfers in and out, but we know that other factors such as flags, wildcards, number of previous price changes that game-week, double game-weeks and so on can also have an effect on the speed at which prices rise or fall or even on whether they rise or fall at all.
It's still basically a transfer-based system, but modified by other factors.

If FPL choose to apply rules that result in all significantly underpriced (according to FPL points in the current season and total ownership) high ownership players dropping slower or not at all when they are transferred out, but not to have similar rules for significantly overpriced players, then that is up to them.

I don't believe they are making exceptions for individual players - it seems more likely to me that they are applying rules that we do not fully understand to groups of players determined by other rules that we don't know but which probably do exist.

If you think that Salah and Sanchez are overpriced at 10.3m and 11.7m respectively then don't buy them, but do buy them if you think they're underpriced bargains - simples!
If you want to sell a player and then buy him back later then his price may or may not have changed in the meantime. The change may not be exactly what you had expected, but it shouldn't be enormously different. It isn't as if they are suddenly hoiking Salah's price from 10.0 to 11.0 in one go, it just changes comparatively slowly.

Actually, it isn't just a few high profile players such as Salah and Kane who keep failing to drop despite continuing transfers out.

According to FPLstatistics, there are an unusually large number of players who have been extremely close to
-100% for some time, and many of these have had their percentages revised downwards several times by FPLstats or remained above -99% because of their continued failure to drop.

I don't believe that all these players have been individually manipulated - far more likely that the price change mechanism contains some rules that are new this season and that FPLstats has failed to suss out.
A number of other sites gave up trying to forecast price changes some time ago.

We shouldn't really expect players to have the same price as they had when they last had the same ownership, especially when their current price is below their true value.
That does not necessarily indicate a malfunctioning or gerrymandered system.

The price change mechanism is still based mainly on net transfers, but perhaps the rules might now take more account of ownership than they use to, so that players with high ownership do not fall in price when they have net transfers out but do still rise in price when they have net transfers in.
It doesn't really matter if there are other players who have low ownership because of their high prices - we can just ignore them.

One thing for sure, those that don’t own Salah now and spread the cash chasing Kun’s allure, will struggle to get him back if he hauls big time this coming Game Week and double rises 🙁

You reckon? How many potential new owners are there left? Basically you own him or your team is a dead team (with a small number of exceptions).

I haven't struggled to get Hazard whenever I have wanted him so I don't know why I would struggle to get Salah if I want him. 😉

All this 'priced out' stuff is unnecessarily emotive really.

Son has a very poor record against top 6. He plays well against weak defences. Lingard probably has a higher chance of returns if he links up with martial / Sanchez... But it's a poor fixture for both. On the other hand, burnley has a high chance of clean sheet vs New and Mee gets BPS too.

But surely you can't bench son he costs 8.2 right now. If you think he performs bad against top 6 surely transfer him out as next 3 matches are against top 6 sides. Lingard is different at 6.3 more of a 4th/5th midfielder so don't mind benching him for mee who has high chance for clean sheet

I agree, 8.2 is a lot to sit on bench... Maybe transferring him out is an option. But sometimes, we may have bigger fish to fry and so, benching him is not a bad idea. I'm benching 7m Arnie for Mee this week. Perhaps, will remove him the week after.

Son is as explosive as Mahrez if not more so. I don't use stats myself but I hear Mahrez stats are pretty ordinary and son's are excellent . Good chance when we score he will be involved

Personally don't think VVD is worth the money. My plan is to eventually upgrade mbemba to jones for 3 premium defenders. I want to swap masuaku out for a west brom defender. What are your thoughts on this move do it this week or wait one week?

I didn't actually check before but now I have they rotate all they up until gameweek 37. The main reason I was considering west brom defence is not rotation but because they have looked solid under pardew

I'm probably doing Arnie → Shaqiri. If it left a bit more in the bank I'd probably get Walcott. Either way it's giving me a player with a definite GW31 fixture in case I don't want to use Free Hit for it.

Maybe but that is the price bracket I'm looking in. Don't see any value below 5m at the moment and if I wanted to upgrade to the 8m mark I'd have wanted Sane or would wait until Spurs' fixtures turn.

Don't feel I'm too blinkered looking at that guaranteed match, both have good fixtures in the meantime, a bit of form and Walcott in previous seasons has had spells when he's unbelievable value at around 9m let alone 7m. The GW31 fixture just gives them the edge over others.

Saving your wildcard to prepare for double GW bench boost can be worth much more than a few hits would cost you so I'd take hits before using it.

Tough call. If your are in mini league head to heads, maybe a WC. If you are going for overall total, I would just take a -8 here.

Alli's not great but I think he just needs to sort out the non starters first. Get a full XI on the pitch this GW and go from there. It's not like Alli can't score against anyone.

Arnie and DCL are the major current issues. Then Masuaku.

Defence should be alright this week although it'd be easy to do Masuaku to a Burnley defender. I'd probably take a -4 or -8 to get a full XI for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Lots of choice to replace Arnie between 5.5-7m. Maybe consider Alli → Mahrez as well. If Sane's out Bernardo Silva could be good value in the short-medium term. That'd free up funds to upgrade DCL.

No way would I WC that.

Looks like you can go Masuaku, Arnie, DCL > VVD, Shaqiri, Wilson over 2 weeks for a -4.

That's just a trio that spring to mind, but would pretty much fix your depth and team balance issues straight away. Quaner is fine because you can only play 7 attackers.

Would you rather: Kane, lanzini, cresswell for aguero, choupo, Alonso @-4 or Rooney, lanzini, cresswell for diouf, mkhit, bellerin @-4?
Would also retain azpil, Jones, Mahrez, sterling, salah, and fodder either way.

                      Aguero/Kane

Sounds like progress might've been made with Aubameyang, if he joins it'll be unclear what Laca's position/role will be and I suspect he could be benched for Mkhi to provide a bit more balance.
