Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 4

Our last glance back at the previous round of fixtures brings Palace’s new goal-getting wide man into focus. Swansea’s outstanding start to the season is also acknowledged, whilst the lack of impact from big hitters is causing plenty of concern.

The Player

Bakary Sako’s weekend goal and assist ensured Jose Mourinho had little to cheer about in his 100th home match in charge of Chelsea.

Having fired the winner at home to Villa in his Gameweek 3 debut, the Mali international went one better as Palace emerged from Stamford Bridge with all three points. After just two matches, Sako – who has also earned maximum bonus on both occasions – has racked up 23 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Delve into the underlying data and it’s clear to see his immediate impact is no fluke. Despite playing only half of the first four Gameweeks, Sako leads the way amongst midfielders for shots on target, with a total of eight – put into perspective, team-mates Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie, Jason Puncheon and Yohan Cabaye have mustered seven attempts on target between them.

Given that Bolasie and Zaha managed four strikes apiece last term, Sako’s arrival clearly offers the Eagles greater firepower in the attacking midfield three slots. His 15 efforts for Wolves – albeit at a lesser level in the Championship – illustrates his eye for goal and the midfielder’s performances so far suggest he’s stepped up seamlessly to the top-flight.

At a price of just 5.5 in FPL, Sako looks set to follow in the footsteps of Riyad Mahrez and offer Fantasy managers another budget candidate to consider in their five-man midfields. Upcoming clashes with City and Spurs may deter many from immediate investment, with the schedule taking a turn for the better in Gameweek 7. With Pardew’s emphasis on attack, though, last weekend’s result suggests the Palace new boy has the talent to reward early adopters and flourish regardless of fixture.

The Team

A 2-1 home win over United maintained Swansea’s superb start to the season as Garry Monk’s men went into the international break in fourth spot in the Premier League.

The manner of the weekend win underlined Monk’s tactical acumen. Devoid of the injured Jefferson Montero, the Swans boss shifted from 4-2-3-1 to a midfield diamond after seeing his side go behind, with Andre Ayew moved up front alongside Bafetimbi Gomis. The impact was instant, as the duo bagged a goal apiece to condemn the Red Devils to their first defeat of the campaign.

Having also scored twice away to Chelsea, Monk’s men have deservedly earned plenty of Fantasy interest in the first month of the season. With four and three goals accrued respectively, Gomis and Ayew have undoubtedly been the standout candidates but they’ve been backed by a supporting cast including Montero, Jonjo Shelvey and Gylfi Sigurdsson that has created chances aplenty.

One look at the upcoming schedule suggests more of the same, too. With trips to Watford and Villa twinned with home encounters against Everton, Spurs and Stoke, Swansea sit third in our Season Ticker for attacking potential over the next six Gameweeks. Given their form so far, the case for having at least one, or even two Swansea options, could well prove a very viable tactic.

The Talking Point

It’s been a season that could barely have been more frustrating for Fantasy managers so far.

Manchester City aside, few, if any, big hitting teams have managed to meet our expectations – indeed, although the Etihad club sit atop the league, Sergio Aguero has scored just once, compounding our misery further. For many, the Argentine’s blank at home to Watford was just the latest in a series of captaincy fails as the campaign stutters out the blocks.

In midfield, we’re desperately awaiting the likes of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez to ignite, whilst up front, it’s arguably worse – not one of the top eight scoring forwards started with a price in excess of 8.0. Aguero, Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney have all failed to justify the hefty outlay, leaving mid-price and budget options to lead the way.

Surely it can’t continue like this. The likes of Aguero and Sanchez, in particular, have posted strong underlying stats that suggest keeping the faith is the wisest move. Whilst Hazard has clearly toiled for Chelsea so far, his record as Fantasy gold over the previous three years cannot be argued – flash back to last term and the Belgian managed just one goal in the first six before finally finding his form.

As we’ve seen time and again, the big hitters almost always rise to the top. Having a little patience seems the best answer but in the midst of an international break, with wildcards flying around, that’s never easy.

In the Palace midfield Cabaye/McArthur/Puncheon are nailed on in double pivot and behind the striker(Puncheon). There are 3 class players fighting for 2 spots out wide in Zaha/Bolasie and Sako. With Bolasie out Sako has been able to get a nice run in the side and has played tremendously well. However, people forget how important Bolasie is for them. There were rumors he'd leave but it looks like he has chosen to stay and i'd say he is as nailed on as they come. Zaha has not done badly so far but has not been spectacular either. I'd say Sako starts ahead of Zaha for now until his form drops drastically/Zaha improves drastically. Bolasie and Puncheon are the guys to get though. Puncheon looks like he'll be 5.9 end of the week. Still on set pieces and playing behind the striker with no competition for his spot.

Sako can shoot which is a massive upgrade on Bolasie. Great player, but lordy his finishing is bad.

Agreed.. either way we have another week to scout em. One of the 3 is definitely gonna be in my team GW 6/7(in for Chadli). Atm i have Puncheon at the top of my list. I have a feeling Sako enjoyed that unknown entity feeling.. Defending teams have been concentrating on Zaha/Puncheon and Bolasie(in the last game) and ignoring him so he has been getting a lot freedom. Even Chelsea were so bothered with Bolasie when he came on they forgot who Sako was and he was left unmarked and scored and assisted. Teams should start shutting him down now.. Gonna give it 2 weeks for him. While Puncheon is already proven so i dont mind getting him in anytime

People will always say "he played so well he HAS to start" .. and i agree with these kind of comments.. for the short term. in the medium/long term it's upto him to keep his spot and not let his form drop. Though if he does go out of form fantasy managers will probably get rid before Pardew does 🙂

And he won't move any more. The time for that transfer ended yesterday, because Real Madrid sure are not going to sell him now that they can no longer replace him. Look again in January, if he's indeed dropped to midfield/bench. Although it may be Benitez who leaves in that case.

No, he uses a line of 4 CB's, and defensive wingers and DM/CM's forming the second line in front of that first one. He basically needs 4-5 starting CB's and 2 starting lateral defenders for his bus.

I don't get the fuss. Am guessing FPL heavily weights a players most recent season when determining their price and KDB was one of the standout performers in all of Europe. Pedro got 'lucky' as he wasn't a regular starter for Barca.

If he hits the ground running, his price won't be an issue. If he has a poor start, price drop makes him cheaper and better value. In the end, FPL's price market reigns supreme.

Only the highlights, and he hasn't looked threatening enough for me (in terms of FPL points potential)

Feels like he'll be sharing points with Lanzini, Kouyate, Sakho and Noble a little too much, even if he does get involved in the goals. And the point of me having Payet was because I thought he'd be the focal point of every West Ham attack, which isn't quite turning out to be the case.

Great player, but is he FPL material? No doubt someone is going to throw some stats at me now to disprove this...!

You might want to mention that #1 in the FFS hall of fame had a howler of a week, has played his WC and is currently ranked 1,010,850.

For a player who has never finished below the top 5,000, that could be inspiring for some.

First decent week for me. Big decisions were
      Rooney + D.Fletcher -> Pedro (c) + Wilson
Plan now to rotate between 343 and 352.
Transfers both paid off as did captain pick.
And the decision to keep Mane went well too.
Also got lucky with Ogbonna coming on as Autosub for Coates.
      54 (-4) for a green arrow.

Sinclair and Rooney our for Silva and Wilson for -4 lost 7 points but made some value. Ozil no show so Huth (1 point) came on when Sahko was 2nd sub

OR 2m and over 70 points behind my ML leader. Aguero and Hazard ruining my team

Things can surely only get better

A smooth that became a rough....

      Was choosing between A) Shaw -> Kolarov or B) Ozil & Sakho -> Silva & Wilson (-4).

Went for B, but despite Shaw, Silva & Wilson all registering attacking returns, it ended up costing me 11 points (Sinclair rooted at 1st sub).

I got Gomis for Sakho after GW one, which I consider a good move.

Also selling Rooney for Wilson seemed sensible.

The rest of my moves are still hit and miss and the midfield is terrible.

For me a big lesson, especially looking at other posters is NOT to wildcard early, as there is just so much uncertainty and inconsistency, you can always fix it with a couple of hits and once you have a better idea, which teams are a good choice and still not happy with yours then wildcard or use it for the December holiday period.

Some teams start well and just falter (remember Wolves anyone?) , which makes me especially skeptical about wildcarding too early.

H2H. Opponent had Cedric + Mane for the Sunday penultimate game and pulled ahead by 15 points.

All I had left was an unintended Ayew + Gomis double up against a defensively solid MAN outfit. 🙂

Your wish is my command. 🙁

GW1 27 points, GW2 28 points, sold Wilson before hat trick. GW3 36 points. WC activated out of pure frustration.

        MY WC team for GW4 looked like this, with 10 strong looking home fixtures ;

        Butland (WBA)
Clyne (WHU), Kolarov (WAT), Francis (LEI)
Coutinho (WHU), Silva (WAT), Ritchie (LEI), Mahrez (bou)
Aguero (WAT), Costa (CPL), Benteke (WHU)

and that team scored 26 points, seriously, how...

I'm now ranked 2.9m. After GW4 last season I was top 10k. Crazy times indeed.

I did Gomis ---> Benteke for a hit on saturday morning...

Did it because of Liverpool's nice home fixtures and Benteke's high ownership. Thought I would fall further behind without having him.

      been waiting for this.

      ok so i had:
koscielny (injury doubt, no points so far),
rose (hadn't played a single minute yet),
      coates (yeeesh),
mane (injury doubt, had done nothing),
sinclair (dropped the game before, had done nothing),
sakho (injured the game before, 1 assist in 3 games).

realistic chance i will be left with 9 or 10 players, i panicked in midweek and activated the wildcard.

as it turned out. koscielny 7, rose 6, mane 11, sinclair 14, sakho 6 (i would have benched him tbf). my team would have got about 65 and i'd still have my wildcard.

a couple of the players i brought in were gradel with what could be a serious injury and i've gone with 2 west brom keepers meaning i could be without a keeper next week.

i did alright with 47 but it could have been a magnificent week if i just stayed put, which i would have done if it wasn't for one too many doubts. right players, wrong time. piss off

This Gameweek was the quintessential 'Rough with the Smooth' for me.

It started with a Rough Saturday with measly 26 points from 8 players & ended with a Smooth Sunday with an unbelievable 31 points from 3 players (Ayew, Mane & Cedric).

Smooth: Wilson, Ayew and Kolarov (C) all performed for my second green arrow (after just 30 & 33 points in gameweeks 1 and 2).

Rough: Nobody else in my team got above 3 points while Targett and Sakho (who were on my bench) got 6 points apiece. Add the fact I had taken a hit to transfer Wilson back in, after his hat-trick the previous week and this gameweek was bittersweet!

Took out Mane, Ayew, Sakho, Cedric and benched Myhill.

I got 28 points this week, 2.8 million rank for the game week, my worst ever.

Largely successful transfers for an 8pt hit
      Huth(1) Mane(11) Kane(2)-> Kolarov(6) Pedro(7) Wilson(7)

Caught some nice price rises and the team is well set up with a WC still in tact.

Ozil was out but that was ok as Shaw came off the bench to form a 532 formation. 4 of my 5 defenders scored at least 6pts

Came away with a healthy 55pts

My best gameweek in this season with 69 points. Sinclair was my fifth MD and after his 3 goals in midweek, I gave him a go against Sunderland. I trusted Mane too, his statistics and performance were really good, he was unlucky not to have a goal or assist in the first 3 gameweeks. Also I took my first -4 hit, I sold Hazard and Meret for Silva and Kolarov and that wen well for me. My only problem in this week was Aguero (C). My captains blanked for the fourth time in a row... Also I still have my wildcard and all of my chips. Biggest lesson - have patience and don't panic because of 1 or 2 bad gameweeks

      The Smooth:

I'd thought of taking a hit on Sakho and Mane out for Benteke and Redmond in, believing Benteke could have a great few weeks.

Instead, I just did Sakho to Wilson, partly due to the discussion surrounding Wilson in the last Scoutcast.

I ended up gaining 18 points propelling me to the dizzy heights of roughly 2.2 million.

      A 2 parter!

Day 1: the rough: the 4th captain fail in a row (Aguero) taking out Koscielny as an injury doubt, and to really rub it in, Benteke for a hit for Sakho. Sad face and a 2.8 million rank.

Day 2: the smooth: with all hope lost, Ayew and Pelle come out of nowhere for my highest scores this season.. Now a slightly less than 2.8 million rank!

Easy one for me! 24pts on my 3 outfield bench - Targett, Ayew and Dier. Mahrez, Gomis and Richards all scored 1 pt each in my starting 11. Captained Aguero also and as a result, only amassed 41pts from my wildcard.

Lessons - don't overestimate Utd. Targett isn't benchfodder. And Ayew could be this season's Michu.

I had both rough and smooth. Ended up taking two hits. The first two transfers went smoothly: Kane to Wilson and Ivanovic to Kolarov. Both saved me team value and were net points gains.

Unfortunately, I got it into my head that I needed to have Sanchez due to his underlying statistics, so the second hit was Mane to Sanchez (c). I owned Mane for all the blanks and not for the returns.

The moral of the story: don't overthink, sometimes patience pays off.

Mane to Silva (for a hit) was a disappointment, along with Pelle's points sitting in the bench in order to play the unfortunate Mahrez.

On a plus side, I am relieved that Sterling scored, it was painful to watch his price plummet. I honestly think Yaya's appeal will diminish now that Kun is back. But KDB says hello now.

Bit of a mix this one. Rough and smooth!

Brought Kolarov in and captained him. Also brought Wilson in for a -4.

Sadly though, I brought them in for Koscielny and Sakho. The pair scored 7 and 6 respectively, the same as Wilson and Kolarov. I essentially lost -4.

In hindsight, the move made sense. Koscielny had a minor back injury and was a doubt. Sakho was arrested for the second time, and also had a groin injury. Both no brainers, especially after Wilson and Kolarov's hauls, right?

I think in the long run the moves will pay off.

Additionally, captaining Kolarov meant I got 12 points, rather than the 4 I would have got for captaining Kun, who I would have captained had I not brought Lord Aleks in.

All in all, this was rough and smooth. Whilst the face value of the move doesn't look worth it, the value gained, captaincy points and potential furniture points in the strong fixtures the pair have, I believe it has been worth it, and should continue to pay dividends!

Kept hold of Mane and Sterling and pocketed 20 from the pair, helping to get me into the top 500k

Lesson - With proven FPL assets, patience is key (says the guy who sold Hazard in GW2)

Rough: my Ivanovic & Albrighton -> Kompany & Mahrez didn't exactly pay off immediately...

Smooth: Mané finally came through, and Gomis continued to shine in a trickier fixture.

Rough: I'm wild carding, and was really thinking about selling both Mané and Gomis. Total dilemma now...

UFPL: Last minute brought in Ayew and moved the captain on to Mane and only had one player score less than 6 which led to a score of 98 and a GW rank of 7!

Wildcarded early as was planning to use it for GW5 over the break but the fact I was already 9.5m down with Rooney, Fabregas and Walcott dropping further I pulled the trigger. Came out 10 points up with the same captain choice, Aguero, but importantly 1.2m up on team value. Moved up to 2.1m too from the best part of 3.0m!

Only rough part choosing Benteke for the West Ham fixture over Gomis. However I funded this by swapping Kompany and Smalling to Kolarov and Shaw so actually ended up a point up! I may well make this trade this week though as the saving could be handy going forward.

      Smooth week for me...

I hovered over the WC button all week - but eventually decided *not* to use it. Cedric, Mane, Ayew, Bellerin and Vardy all delivered points and rewarded my patience. I ended the week with 64 points (20 more than my probable WC team) and with WC still in tact.

      Lesson learned? Patience, patience, patience.

      Incredibly rough

Played my WC last week. Ayew sakho pelle Mane Targett OUT. Team would have somewhere in the 70s had i kept that bunch

Instead ended up with 20 something and NO WC in the bank. Great

The most boring tale ever. Took the gamble of Gomis (7) & Payet (3) --> Wilson (7) & Pedro (7) for a -4.

A net profit of 0 points and an increase in 0.0 to my team value. Excellent.

Have a feeling this wont be featured... but it could well be next week as Gomis and Payet have some tasty fixtures and both looked sharp.

My score for GWK 3 was 49 with a -8 hit.
GWK 4 I needed to make more transfers and I used my WC.
Guess what happened? I got the exactly same score.

jonty, took in wilson and francis for watmore and shaw for a hit, learnt that while hits can be effective esp in the >500k range, the prob of outscoring the players you took out is abt 30% best, unless you're taking out injured/suspended players,

In a way yes cause I think the deal will go through in the end anyway when uefa have gone through the paperwork. If not, no cause I'm fed up with players showing so little loyalty He became the super star that he is in Manchester and should have signed a new contract a long time a go and that would have put an end to the haggling performed by Real Madrid.
I don't like it at allwhen players get frozen out in squads but in this case I can make an exception, if the deal don't come through I hope he gets to either play with tbe youngsters or not to play at all until contract expires.

"the fpl luck factor is nowhere near what some people say it is"

My reply was simply to illustrate that in my opinion, the 'fpl luck factor' is in fact maybe quite close to where 'some suggest it is' (as ambiguous as that terminology is). Undoubtedly it is a massive factor in determining a high place finish - the point of my post, to join in the debate, and to just share my experiences, as it was astounding how much went my way last year.

With regards to the separate second part of the post, which I didn't address in my response, but I actually do agree with.

      *Prizes up for grabs? *

      Reus/Griezman > United
      Adebayor > Villa
      Lacazette > Arsenal
      Wanyama > Chelsea (why not?)

I think there's just a minimal chance for this top happen, but very unlikely since Lyon just sold 2 forwards and will play CL.

I know it's highly unlikely, but we desperately need a striker and DM. Have no hope with Wenger this season.

Hey lads, got a UFPL question that someone may know the answer to, apologies if this has been asked before. From the rules:

Unused transfers are carried over but will be reset to 0 at the end of the August and January transfer windows. This means you have a maximum of 16 transfers to be used in August and 12 in January.

Does anybody know definitively whether this means the FPL transfer window closing (as in 6pm tonight) or just the start of GW5? Obviously I'd rather hold until after the international break.

12th of Sept is UFPL deadline.
Not sure if in used transfers carry over to January though.

Is there any specific reason that BBC are so pumped up over Everton paying 3mil more than expected for the Argentinian defender?

decent profit since we got him for around £2m.

Given the rumours that Cisse is leaving as well and with Riviere injured i'd be surprised though.
