Team Of The Season – Marcos Alonso

His arrival at Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina on the final day of August was unheralded and his league debut a losing one, but Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso would go on to become one of the key Fantasy assets in the 2016/17 campaign.

The Spaniard was brought on in the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal back in September – the moment when Blues boss Antonio Conte first switched to a three-man defence with wing-backs.

Neither side nor player looked back from that point, and with 30 % of the votes, Alonso becomes the first of our three-man defence in the Team of the Season.

The Statistics

Alonso made his first league start in the 2-0 win over Hull City in Gameweek 7, when he was available for 5.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), down from his initial starting price of 6.0.

At that point, the Spaniard was owned by a mere 20,523 managers in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but his performance at the KCOM Stadium provided an immediate indication of the attacking threat he would provide.

He registered five goal attempts against the Tigers – more than any other player involved – and also led the way for chances created (four).

That clean sheet was the first of six consecutive shut-outs for the new-look Chelsea backline, with Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill combining in central defence and Alonso and Victor Moses operating as wing-backs.

He registered his first attacking returns with an assist in the emphatic 4-0 win over Manchester United in Gameweek 9 and opened his account for his new club with a goal in the comprehensive 5-0 victory over Everton in Gameweek 11.

The wing-back produced his first double-figure haul that day, totalling 13 points.

Following that impressive performance, Alonso saw his price shoot up to 6.3 in FPL prior to the Gameweek 12 trip to Middlesbrough, with over 300,000 managers adopting him by that point.

Conte’s men put together another run of four successive clean sheets between Gameweeks 15 and 19, but it was in Gameweek 21 when Alonso produced one of the definitive performances of the season.

The defender scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-0 win at Leicester City and, with what turned out to be his only maximum bonus point haul of the season, he provided a sensational 21-point return.

Although the clean sheets dried up during the second half of the season, Alonso registered a further three goals and two assists as his price climbed to 6.9 by Gameweek 38.

He ended the season as the joint-top scoring defender in FPL with six goals, while he also provided five assists, one behind the league-leading six from Spurs’ Kyle Walker.

He was also the second-highest scoring defender in FPL with 177 points – one behind team-mate Cahill – with Azpilicueta (170) completing an all-Chelsea top three.

Alonso did average 5.7 points per match (ppm) though, significantly better than Cahill (4.8) and Azpilicueta (4.5).

His underlying statistics were also outstanding, registering more goal attempts (46), shots from inside the box (25) and shots on target (16) than any other FPL defender.

Interestingly, Alonso didn’t fare that well when it came to bonus points, only managing 11 compared to 22 for Azpilicueta and 15 for Cahill.

In a nutshell, Alonso could not compete with that pair for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), or completed passes – both factors which impacted on his Bonus Points System tallies.

The Prospects

Alonso will inevitably earn a price hike next season.

Many will no doubt ponder whether out-and-out wing-backs such as Alonso should be reclassified as midfielders, but a price tag of between 7.0 and 7.5 as a defender appears the most likely outcome.

The classification of Victor Moses could also affect Alonso’s stock.

If he’s also a defender next season, the Nigerian will surely be priced lower than Alonso, although his tally of three goals and three assists was inferior.

All of Chelsea’s defensive starters look set to rise in value, with a minimum price of 6.5 perhaps likely across the board.

With Champions League fixtures on the agenda, we perhaps need to assess Chelsea’s defensive assets with more caution.

Conte will look to strengthen his squad over the summer, with alternatives in the wing-back positions likely to be one of the priorities.

That will need monitoring, with the calibre of new acquisitions dictating whether Alonso could be a rotation risk.

But based on his performances this season, Alonso will surely be expected to remain the first-choice.

He could also justify a hefty price tag, with Conte likely to build the Blues’ title defence around the quest for clean sheets.

We will be keen to monitor Alonso’s early numbers to assess if there is any marked regression, but it’s doubtful whether that will make us wary of investment.

Should Chelsea’s opening fixtures bless them with a favourable start, Alonso will likely remain the go-to option for most, particularly if he is priced at just 0.5 more than his defensive team-mates.

Never thought he would perform so excellently when he arrived in the beginning. Great player in terms of fpl.

Agree. Mediocre player in real life though. If they sign a better LB/LWB, he'd be a good back-up. That would be good depth.

I think i'll steer clear of WB's especially as I think they will be priced higher next season.

I think I'll be looking at relatively cheap goal scoring CB's (like McCauley, Dawson, Dann and VVD) who have CS potential next year as it gives 3 sources of points - CS, Goals and BAPS.

Think we'll see one premium wing back plus 4 cheapo cb/lesser valued wing backs being the make up. Really depends if fpl go for it and make a wb category. But I'd be a bit surprised if they actually did do it!

Alonso and Coleman were 2 of the defenders this year that flew in the face of the usual "don't take a hit for a defender" rule. So productive and very quickly highly owned once people realised how attacking they were, so big points from them began to really hurt if you didn't own ! Remember when Alonso got his brace / 21pts? If you didn't own, your OR absolutely plummeted.

Absolute shoo-in for team of the year. What an asset (rather than what a player); well worth the 6.1 I paid!

As mentioned above, I got rid of Alonso the week he got that brace. OR plummeted like you said. As for Coleman, I never owned him. Going Baines over him was one of the defining moves of my season.

I am thinking of setting up a new community tournament next season.

Since this will be a season long tournament, it will be impossible to conduct unless I get some help and some new partners/organizers. I also have my final exams in August so I will definitely need help from others to set this up!

    Here's a brief outlook about it. 🙂

There will be 24 teams with 2 Divisions (12 teams in each) with relegation and promotion. The number of teams will be modified according to the number of participants.

Each team will work exactly like how real football teams work.

Each team will have a group of FFS managers and there will be a captain for each team. Each team will be given the same budget to recruit the players (FFS managers). A players auction will be held with the captains where they can use the budget to buy the team players.

After the teams are formed they will play against each other in a head to head format in a 20 team league. 3 points will be awarded for a win, and 1 point for a draw. The teams will be placed in the league according to the points accrued. There will be relegation and promotion

Like in real football, there will be transfer windows (after the auction) where we can buy, sell and release players. Transfers will be done with the money in the budget. Since the auction is in this window, there will be no transfer dealings in this summer off season (only auction). The transfer window will start from January.

According to the standings in the league, teams will be awarded with money in the budget, from which they can buy better players and strengthen their team. All these things will carry into the next season.

As I said, this tournament works exactly like in real football world, with transfer deals, rumours, league matches, relegation, promotion etc.

It might look complicated but once things get along I will make it easier for you. 🙂

I hope it will be a thrilling league 🙂 Please, like I said, it will be impossible to set this up without the help of others. If anyone wants to be an organizer, please email me at newfantasyleague9@gmail.com. Ideally I am looking for 4 more organizers.

Looking forward to your views 🙂

Your name will be called in the auction and the captains of the respective teams can bid for you.

My initial thought is that every player will have the same base/starting price. The captains will beforehand know the quality of the players and will accordingly up their bid. If I don't keep the same base price, I can see plenty of criticism coming up regarding this.

If you do decide to have different base/starting prices keep it mechanical. E.g. Last 3y average OR inside Top 5k Category A. Inside Top 10k Category B..... etc.

Good point. Will be a very long auction with 150-200 names. Perhaps you release the names and let captains indicate interest. Auction then only happens for players where multiple captains have shown interest. Other players can then just be selected at base price.

      Sorry I don't think I understand 🙁
There are so many 'teams' and I'm not sure in what sense you are using it.

So: there is a captain, and he picks FFS managers for his tournament-team, and then his tournament-team gets the points that each FFS member (in his tournament-team)'s FPL-team gets?

'Buy, sell, and release players' - are these players FFS managers and their accompanying FPL teams?

Or have i read this all wrong and the captain picks managers and then they pick FPL players and it's run outside of the FPL game?

      1. Dreams

It's the beginning one. Not the later. Players are fpl managers. Game is within FPL and not outside of it.

This is a cool idea AA33. I can imagine the transfer speculation on here being hilarious!

Yes (only at the start). When the transfer window opens, you can leave the team if you want. You can also notify your interest to the captain of the team you want to play.

More details about transfers and things related to it will be published in the community articles.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic (with thanks to Spencer).

With Huddersfield Town securing the final place in the Premier League, how do you rate their players from a fantasy perspective?

With former Borussia Dortmund second team coach David Wagner at the helm, his friend Jurgen Klopp (who was best man at his wedding) will surely be willing to give him with plenty of tips and advice.

They will be amongst the favourites for relegation, but that didn't stop us picking the likes of Pickford, Friend and Maguire last season. Which of their players will be on your watch list?

Some of the defensive errors they made yesterday were amateur level football. So I won't be touching defenders or keepers unless they show a vast improvement.

In general I have a feeling they'll be whipping boys unless they do some big business in Summer and retain all the players loaned to them for another season.

Huddersfield's defensive record in the Championship is far worse than Boro's was:

Huddersfield in Championship 2016/17: 12 clean sheets (6 home, 6 away), 58 goals conceded (26 home, 32 away)
Middlesbrough in Championship 2015/16: 22 clean sheets (15 home, 7 away), 31 goals conceded (8 home, 23 away).

Mods, can you delete this and all other comments on Aguero staying at City? I would not like FPL Towers to see these comments and keep Aguero at an inflated price. He needs to come down to at least 11.5 this coming season.

        This.

No one knows who they will sign or how they'll perform once the season starts. They also have a shrewd manager in Wagner who plays a pressing style like Klopp.

A lot will depend on whether they can sign Mooy and Schindler as they are vital to the wide press that Wagner plays.

Nakhi Wells is a decent striker too, will be interesting to see how he fares in the Prem.

The likeliest is they'll come straight back down but don't write them off before a ball is kicked.
