Scout Report – Sead Kolasinac

Arsenal made their first raid into the summer transfer market earlier this week by acquiring defender Sead Kolasinac from German outfit Schalke 04.

Arriving in north London on a free transfer, the 23-year-old reckons his versatility will be key in light of Arsene Wenger’s decision to switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation in the latter stages of 2016/17:

“There are different positions, but I think left-back is where I feel most comfortable. I can play as part of a three at the back too, or further forward. I’m really flexible”.

And the Gunners boss was quick to back his new acquisition adjusting to the English top-flight:

“He’s very compact as a player, very strong and determined in the challenges. He’s good in the air as well, so overall I believe he has all the attributes to adapt to English football. The game here is very demanding physically on the commitment front and he has the ingredients to adapt to that.”

The History

Born in Karlsruhe, Kolasinac joined his home-town club aged eight, before stints in the youth set-ups at 1899 Hoffenheim, Stuttgart and Schalke 04.

Promoted to the Schalke first XI in 2012, he managed just one goal and three assists in 69 appearances in his first four seasons in the Bundesliga. Last term, however, Kolasinac was utilised as both a full-back and a wing-back and went on to produce three goals and five assists in 25 league outings.

On the international scene, Kolasinac made his debut for Bosnia – his parents’ homeland – in 2013, and has since been selected on 17 occasions.

The Prospects

Handily, Wenger also went on to inform the club’s official website of his plans for the new boy next season:

“What he will give us is the fact that he’s a player who can give assists, who can go forward, who can contribute good crosses. It’s very important that we have that as well, because we have Kieran Gibbs, we have Nacho Monreal and we have him. But Nacho plays a lot now in central defence and in a three-man system I see him in there. So overall, I think [Kolasinac] can contribute a lot to help us to be more dangerous going forward.”

Having won eight of their nine matches – including an FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea – when operating with the 3-4-2-1 system, there’s every chance that Arsenal will continue with the same tactics in the initial stages, at least.

As evidenced by the likes of Marcos Alonso and Kyle Walker last season, the recent trend of wing-backs is ideal for Fantasy Premier League managers on the look-out for attack-minded defenders.

Set to be listed as a defender across the Fantasy games, Kolasinac boasts the output to suggest that he could be the next in line to benefit. A starting price of 6.0 is expected, though, with Chelsea’s Alonso likely to come in around the 7.0-mark, that could still represent strong value for money.

Among the Arsenal contingent, a switch to the three-man backline for Monreal could be bad news for Rob Holding’s pitch-time, with Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny surely likely starters. The Frenchman is suspended for the first two Gameweeks, however.

And if Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain claims the right wing-back berth ahead of Hector Bellerin, then Kolasinac would essentially be the only out of position Arsenal defender on offer next term.

With Gibbs linked with a switch away, Monreal’s attacking numbers illustrate just why Wenger has made the move – Kolasinac averaged a key pass every 90 minutes last season compared with the Spaniard’s 262.8. Tellingly, in 36 appearances Monreal made just six successful crosses in the previous campaign.

In terms of goal threat, there’s no doubt that an average of 121.7 minutes per attempt needs to be improved, although it’s worth bearing in mind that only 13 of Kolasinac’s 24 league starts were as a wing-back in 2016/17.

While his impact in the final third is the main headline here, the Bosnian international’s defensive displays could help improve a Gunners rearguard that managed just 13 clean sheets in 2016/17. He made more successful tackles (69) than any Schalke player and placed second when it came to interceptions (81).

Meanwhile, his frequency of successful tackles (30 minutes to Monreal’s 50) was far superior, while he was very similar to the Spaniard for minutes per clearance, block and interception (CBI) by 14.8 minutes to 14.5.

The Gunners’ failure to clinch a top four spot could also be to our advantage. Should Wenger prioritise the league and rotate his regulars around Europa League fixtures instead, then Kolasinac has all the ingredients to suggest that he could be the next wing-back to find a place in our squads.

There really isn't imo. Just play it when you need it.

If you're going to try and find the optimal time I guess it would be the first international break (GW4-ish) so you can get some early price rises in... but even so I'd prefer to keep mine in case everything goes wrong later on.

2nd international break imo. 6/7 weeks is 'enough' time to evaluate teams & players, transfer window is closed and teams seem more settled - I did it too early this year (GW3) and somehow ended up with 3 West Ham players. Loads of people play it in the first international break so price rises aren't as easy to predict then either - much better in GW7. I'll be setting up a team for the first 6 weeks this year.

I played it around gwk 3 last year and regretted it. Before Christmas I was thinking of would be amazing to have saved it till then, but that is a long wait and relies on your gwk 1 team being not a complete shambles!

Matip came to Liverpool on a free and was 5.5 (not that being a free transfer should really play a role in pricing). Kolasinac looks to boast much more attacking potential, so think 6.0 looks fair. In line with Alonso's starting price last year.

Agree somewhat. But you could argue that the likes of Chelsea, United and Spurs defenders will be 6.0 minimum. Should Arsenal defenders really be the same price when they didn't collect the same amount of clean sheets and finished 5th? Could we see another case of overpricing here like we did with United assets despite them finishing 6th? But yeah, maybe his attacking threat could bump him up to 6.0. I just think relative to the defenders of the other teams, some, though not all of the Arsenal defenders should be slightly cheaper.

Yeah, very true, it's not easy that's for sure! I think with Alonso likely to be 7.0, there'll be more scope to move other defenders up to 6.5 and 6.0. Think defenders who played a reasonable number of matches at wing-back last season could move up to 6.5 like Rose and Walker.

United ones look a bit trickier - the likes Valencia and Bailly could provide the better value IMO if they're 6.0.

I'm sure he'll be £6.0m. Free transfer means nothing and most people don't know him so that's why they're thinking he could be 5.0m. He's primed to play the wingback position, FPL know that.

      1. Sonny “The Hitman&rdq…

        Two arguments against this:
        1) Schalke didn't play in the very physical English Premier League
        2) I really like Holding in the center 3 and Monreal at the Wing Back....free transfer factors in because if they spent a lot I would think that he would be more likely start. It is used to justify playing time in many instances.

The 'physical' PL isn't in its own bubble compared to other leagues. Kolasinac was brilliant last season, far better suited to LWB than Monreal who Wenger himself prefers in the back 3. Don't think Holding will be a starter but one injury/rest and he's in.

Well we will see. You agree with Paul and this article. If you watched Kolasinac play then you are ahead of me. But many recent acquisitions by Wenger have been flops (see Perez and Mustafi and Xhaka have been underwhelming); but Monreal was forced to the back three by Kos injury and suspension. He was brilliant at wing back.

2 doesn't really work because he probably gets paid a higher wage because Arsenal had to defend of other clubs like Milan to sign him and I'm sure he also gets a signing fee as usual with a free transfer.

The Bundesliga is a physically demanding league also, and Schalke were arguably one of the most physical (Kolašinac, Burgstaller, Höwedes, Goretzka, Bentaleb).

Hamburger SV, Köln, Hoffenheim, Ingolstadt etc were all known for being extremely physical teams last season.

The whole of the current season, with nods to shorter term trends and longer term class.

For individual matches I would also look at home or away form and matches with similar fixture difficulty.

For your excellent series of articles I would suggest that you ought to increase the number of game-weeks you look back at to say 6, and also that you might make some adjustments for differences between home and away form.

Interesting you mention 6 weeks because that's where I was thinking of heading. The home and away form need's tinkering with as well but the main idea is to keep it as simplified as possible. Cheers

Repost for anyone interested whilst its quiet

Do you play FIFA on PS4?

If so would you be interested in joining the FFS Pro Club?

We currently have several FFS posters in the squad but we are looking for new players of all abilities and positions ahead of next season - are you up for it?

More info below in FFS article from earlier this season and we will be doing another article soon, contact details for Goldman within or let us know by commenting below if you are keen? We have a WhatsApp group we can invite you into.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/10/28/ffscout-fifa-league-and-pro-club/

We play evenings mainly (probably playing this evening!) but its all about when we have enough players online at once so the more the merrier. Further down the line Goldman is planning some tournaments too. We have players from the UK, Europe, Pakistan, USA, Australia and Canada already.

Chelsea have Alonso and he probably didn't want to play second fiddle. Pep is looking for more technical full backs to suit his style. Juve had interest, but it cooled because Sandro has been excellent. I think the hype here is more about fantasy than real life.

Why was he even on loan at WBA? He was 19 years at the time and should've played for a club with a completely different style. Arsenal and Wenger are the ones to blame in this case.

As a Bremen fan, it's a shame. The one season and club where he was starting to get regular football and show what he was capable of (11 goals in 29 games from midfield/no. 10) and he chooses to go to Bayern and likely sit on the bench.
Everyone here expected it to happen at some point, as he said himself, just after joining Bremen last year that he has always wanted to play for Bayern and that was his goal.
I believe there was some clause in his contract letting him go for relatively little money too.

Shame but hey, hopefully he makes a mark there.

Your thoughts on the signing of Jerome Gondorf to replace Florian Grillitsch who's leaving for the Rhein-Neckar? Really like Grillitsch but Gondorf could be a little bargain.

On the plus side, you think Gnabry leaving could end any hope West Ham have of poaching Max Kruse? Reckon Nouri would throw an almighty strop. Kruse was so key to Werder's late push for Europe, when Gnabry was injured funnily enough.

I think for the money, it could be a rather good signng. From what I saw of him (admittedly not a huge amount), he looked decent and chips in with a goal and assist every so often. A good replacement, I reckon.

I think Kruse will stay. Like you say, I don't think there is any way of Nouri letting that happen. He was integral and his stats this season were excellent, you can see why so many clubs are interested in him. If he does end up going, along with Gnabry, it'll be back to fighting relegation again as opposed to trying to build on the end of last season.

Are you also a Werder fan or a follower of the Bundesliga in general?

Gondorf has good leadership qualities but wouldn't be sure if he'll be a regular starter at the Weserstadion or not.

Yeah I'd be amazed if they allowed Kruse to leave tbh - Werder fans don't deserve that. Some of the most loyal fans in the Bundesliga - even when Skrypnyk was in charge and it was the same old story 😛 Finally building on something good under Nouri who's done a fine job so far.

            The latter.

I actually found an explanation saying Bayern was always interested, everybody knew it, but Bayern had to make sure he proves himself first before they sign him. They eventually let him join Bremen with a clause in his contract that allows them to get him after one season, which is kind of similar to buying him from Arsenal and loaning to Bremen right away. Apparently Arsenal was aware of this, but they couldn't do anything about it, Gnabry's eyes were on Bayern and he wouldn't extend his contract at Arsenal.

Anyone else think that Alonso and co will be maxed out at 6.5 again this year? Lots of chat of 7.0-7.5 WB's but I can't see FPL going for that as they will effectively be priced out the game from the outset. Imo they will have a group of 6-10 or so premium (goalscoring)CBs and WBs at 6.5, and a decent bunch tempting 6.0ers.

It's not about how many are in each bracket it's about what Alonso is worth regardless of the need to increase the 6.5m bracket.

More recently there aren't as many top heavy hitters. Four or five years ago for example I had Baines, Vidic and Vermalen who were all around £7m as they had great attacking threat along with good cleansheet accumulation.

If Alonso is 7.0, I'd expect Azpi/Moses to be cheaper and therefore I'd go for them. Moses should be slightly cheaper imo, not on FKs so maybe 6.0 for him?

Azpi is a baps magnet so 6.5 for him?

Only premium defenders I'd get are wingbacks of Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal

Lots of good points here. Only my second year in FPL, so this is all still fresh for me. Personally I can see FPL limiting defender options to 6.5 again. There are going to be so many desirable premium options in every bracket, they really will have to exercise some restraint in costings to maintain a degree of flexibility of squad construction.

And Bakayoko to Chelsea. Frankly, I doubt they're going to sell both. One, maybe, not both.

They're qualified to CL and just prolonged the manager's deal, they will need to keep most of the team intact and are financially good and not forced to sell, and I think Vasilyev even said that he may sell a couple of young stars, but not all of them.

Just saying that if you see either Fabinho or Bakayoko moving, don't expect the others transfer to materialise. A bit same way we could expect that since Silva already moved, then Lemar probably won't. Either Mendy or Sidibé might go, probably not both. They already got a replacement to the RB and their planned LB replacement is probably signing elsewhere, so my bet is rather Sidibé. Might as well be neither, both have made it to French NT, and seem to be happy at Monaco, and the guy they signed for RB, Gaspar, is a youth player with little experience. If they sell Fabinho and Sidibé, they will need two new RB's.

Let's fuel up Mbappé transfer rumours - in an FPL interesting way.

Everybody knows Real Madrid is bidding everything to get him, so he's obviously going there. I mean, why not?

Well, here's why not: reports in France say that his agent and advisors (family), do not want Jorge Mendes to have part in the deal and certainly not to become the kid's agent, and Real's transfers go through Mendes now. So, the story goes that Mbappé and his advisors don't want to negotiate with Real as long as this is the case - not to say that Monaco had accepted a bid either, nothing suggests they have.

This is something I find very interesting and in its own way encouraging. I hate these agents like Mendes and think that they destroy football, so I'm always happy to see a talented guy is sensible enough to avoid them. Although sometimes a family member as agent can be just a nutcase or a criminal. Nothing guaranteed. But people at AS Monaco say that Mbappé is accompanied by levelheaded, good people, thinking of his best and not just money, and the boy strikes me as very sensible guy in general.

Anyway, Mbappé's family IS said to be open to a transfer. So he might well move, and if Real is out, that means PL clubs have chance. Current favourite, however, is said to be PSG who are allegedly prepared to match Real's £115M bid, and maybe to top it.

This is an unusual case for a lad of his age, but for me, the jury has spoken. The way he's played is just incredible, he's already amongst the elite strikers of Europe, and just 18-year-old. If he could just keep up that level, he would probably be worth the money, because he's still got some 12 top years left, for sure. And there most certainly is still margin of progress for him, so in all likelihood, with right treatment, he will only become better for at least next 10 years.

The price is silly, but the big clubs have to pay silly money to get the exceptional players. Let me put it this way: if any club could have got Messi for £115M when he was 18, should they not have bought him? Imo, they should. And even despite the prices have much inflated since and £115M was much bigger sum back when Messi was 18, still, if, say, Arsenal or Liverpool (rumoured to bid for Mbappé) had the chance to get Messi for that price, or even couple of tens of millions of pounds more, they should have taken it.

I'm not saying Mbappé is as good as Messi, nor that he certainly will be. But Messi at the age of 18 also was not as good as Messi at the age of 25 nor sure to become so good. The point is, this is a player who already is excellent at the very top level and shows clear talent and commitment, no problems.

Hmmm.... I'm not quite surprised that he didn't nothing against Real in the semi, because he didn't play against Real in the semi.

But it's a bit harsh demand to excel in a match you don't play. For comparison, Messi did nothing against Real in the semi either. Guess you don't know about that Messi guy then, either. 😉

Meanwhile, Mbappé was a constant threat to Juve in the semi, pulled that defence apart and was unlucky not to score in the first match, and could really have assisted a goal too.

And that's just about the best defence on planet. He had already confirmed against Dortmund and City, which are really not bad teams. And then he's also doing it consistently in France, where defences play deep and scoring and chance creation is harder than in other big leagues.

If you just both watch him, and check his stats, there's no question about the eye test, he passes that easily, and then, although his conversion rate will probably come down, his stats are top and he is still elite even with normal conversion rate, and there are good reasons to believe that he is much better than average finisher and is tricky to play against for his good movement and great dribbling, and will probably keep that rate higher than average. And, that's not the only thing, he's not just a goal scorer either, he shows a good vision and very fine passing skills and as a result can also hold the ball and creates a lot of chances for his teammates.

I'm just telling what is reported in about every French journal now. Not sure where it comes from originally. 🙂

But, he's not the only player who sticks with his family instead of signing with a big international agent, and certainly it can be in his family's interests to stick with the kid instead of selling him out.

Another player like this would be Rabiot from PSG. His agent is his mother despite Raiola luring him. In that case, however, I think he could be better off signing with Raiola.

Apparently, Mbappé just wants to avoid Mendes and benching. Reasonable. Should keep him away from Barça and Real.

If Roy Keane is amongst your coaching staff, you'd think his mentality would rub off on the players. Obviously not so far. Been way too casual. Long has done well today, need to bring young players through. Friendlies just aren't enough imo.

Agree somewhat, but it's a big game.

Agree with no determination but I think long balls can still work to an extent. Maybe not direct all the time but definitely teams can get the ball in the opposition area and put teams under pressure, ala Iceland.

Agree, but they only work when you're committing numbers and show movement. Walters isn't a centre-forward.

I'st time in >30 years I could not be arsed watching them and don't care about the result. I think I've finally grown up!

Hard to pick a team when you do not have the players

I'm more disappointed by the mentality of the lads Ogie. It's like the green jersey doesn't mean anything to them, except for McClean. Lads always gives 110%.

Arsenal or Tottenham seriously linked with anyone?

Think Spurs might still be interested in Max Meyer who has one year left on his deal & recently turned down a new contract offer at S04. Though that was before they sacked manager Weinzierl & hired Tedesco. Not sure if that'll change anything yet.

A draw will still be a disappointing result, though not the worst 🙂

Fair contest imo. Should be 2-1 to ROI.

Wow. Dusan Tadic very possibly on his way to Liverpool for £13m. What is it with Liverpool and Soton players?
