The Lacazette injury latest as budget forward Nketiah waits on first-team chance

Arsenal 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) | Josh Maja (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Daniel Ceballos (£4.7m) | Mario Lemina (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Ceballos x3 Maja x2 Nketiah x1

A last-minute Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) goal broke Fulham hearts as Scott Parker’s side let more points – and another clean sheet – slip away.

Recent Fantasy interest in the Cottagers has mostly revolved around their excellent keeper Alphonse Areola (£4.6m), with his 5.0% ownership enduring a third straight clean sheet wipe-out, the last two involving late, late goals.

A Lack Of Lacca

But it was indicative of a generally poor match that the biggest FPL news involved an injury to Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) who, with 10.5% ownership, was easily the most popular player on display – even more so after attracting 270,000 transfers in ahead of last Friday’s deadline.

The striker had scored four goals in his last four starts, only to limp off in the 70th minute on Sunday, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta delivering a ‘wait and see’ verdict after the game.

We’ll have the scan on Tuesday, see the extent of the injury and the timeline to it. I don’t know. He felt something in his hamstring, we don’t know the extent of it.

Arteta’s attacking options were already limited by an injury to Martin Odegaard (£5.9m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.3m) bout of malaria, meaning a second straight league start for Gabriel Martinelli (£4.9m).

The manager spoke about the need to rotate following Thursday’s Europa League tie and he was true to his word, with his most surprising move replacing the 7.3%-owned Bernd Leno (£5.0m) with Mat Ryan (£4.1m) because the latter ‘trains like a beast’.

All that training led to zero saves and no clean sheet either for the Australian, and it is the Lacazette development that could hurt the most Fantasy managers.

Then again, more Europa League-based rotation and upcoming games against Everton and Chelsea aren’t exactly boosting the appeal of the Gunners’ assets anyway.

Fast Eddie

At least the Frenchman’s replacement, Nketiah, thrived to earn the praise of his manager.

He always offers his best. Today he scored a goal, he had another two important chances and he’s always a threat in front of goal.

Fulham’s one and only shot on target came from Josh Maja‘s (£5.3m) penalty. Parker’s side have now scored just four goals in their last eight matches and haven’t managed more than one in a fixture since Gameweek 24.

The problem for Fantasy managers is that the Cottagers’ previous defensive resilience is an equally distant memory – having kept five clean sheets in seven matches up to Gameweek 27, they’ve not managed a single one since.

Parker might not have given up the ghost just yet:

No chance, absolutely no chance have we lost hope. Why would there not be belief? Of course, we are disappointed, I’m gutted, the last two weeks have been a real kick in terms of that.

We wake up tomorrow morning, put the gloves back on and go again, keep fighting, and try and pick up points.

But a Blank Gameweek 33 is followed by trips to Chelsea and Manchester United over the final five fixtures, suggesting Fantasy managers are unlikely to be moved by Parker’s fighting talk.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Bellerin (Pepe 68), Holding, Gabriel, Xhaka; Elneny (Partey 68), Ceballos; Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli; Lacazette (Nketiah 70).

Fulham XI (4-4-2): Areola; Aina, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Robinson; Cavaleiro (Bryan 84), Zambo Anguissa, Lemina, Lookman (Reed 69); Maja (Loftus-Cheek 77), De Cordova-Reid.

Opposing views always welcome, but Ben has done the homework. If you have another view on how it could work then share it. I have no problem whatsoever with challenge to an expected/accepted norm, but lets move on the plausible rather than the unspoken. If you doubt, you have to propose the options you see feasible.

So: Everton, Villa, Palace, Southampton will have a DGW in 35 and play in 36: Man U, Leicester, Chelsea, Arsenal will have a DGW in 35 but a blank in 36. Bearing in mind 4 can sit on the bench, plus one FT and maybe a -4 hit, with a bit of planning can get 6 DGW players and a full team out in 36. Get those mini spreadsheets out!

Don't really want to get rid of Leic, Utd & Chelsea players en masse. Nor do I particularly want to load up on any Palace or Southampton. A couple each from Villa & Everton is fine, but doesn't excite me.

Therefore, FH in GW36 seems like it may be the best option for my team.

No interest in Everton, Palace, Southampton. Chelsea and Arsenal have difficult doubles. As long as you have Martinez, a couple Utd and Leicester your good.

Leaning this way too . Doesn't look like BGW36 should be too difficult to navigate either assuming most will hve two-three Lieverpool players, one or two Tottenham (depending on Kane injury), a West Ham player or two. The most difficult call is how to manage United and Leicester players

Peoples thoughts on Greenwood? Martial out seems to have benefited him. Started last 9/10 games with Martial out. With Pogba and Bruno taking up the creative force he’s seems to carry more of a threat

There's a reason you didn't wc with Watkins though, regardless of Brom & the expected double? I'd rethink the change in strategy if you have one

I don't have much of a strategy at this stage.

I have 1 eye on doubles and blanks. But I'm really just winging it now till the end of the season - and it's coincided with my best run of form.....

This season showed if you use your WC early and are in a strong position from it you need to hop on the EO bandwagons and not go differential, as it is hard to jump on players quickly like a wildcard allows. Many wildcarders profited off getting Nacho and Lingard in easily, and non-owners were hurt if you didnt follow suit.

    1. Pompel
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 1 month ago

Think you're right. The -12 I avoided by wild carding GW18 will now be offset by getting Nacho one week too late, and having to take a hit for TAA for GW33. But at least I got in on Lingard early

      1. JJeyy
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

Yep its been a lesson for me this year, as I usually hold off on the WC but used it early and it did get me to a strong position. But that slightly slipped due to late adoption of Lingard, when in reality if I just kept track of the bandwagons and followed instead of trying to be different Id be in just as strong a position as many WC teams.

No one goes differential on purpose without acknowledging a strong loss could take place. Why, against your own reasoning, whilst also having no benefit or luxury of others moves, would you best against the odds rather than stick with your own reasoning. You could put your differential bet on one, maybe two, cheaper players? Why bet the farm when you know that it's progressive improvement that will take you forward and remove the inconsistency from your game?

        - Rudiger
        - Bruno

Arsenal and Chelsea shouldn't pose a problem (bench you one Chelsea defender, and you shouldn't have any Arsenal players in your team now that Laca busted his hammy), but if your loaded up with say Nacho, Maddi, and two-three United, you'll have to plan ahead

Go for it if you feel like it.
You will hardly get support for differential picks until captain hindsight strikes.
I got in Stones after a couple of clean sheets and people still advised to wait and see whether he was nailed or not.
Lingard points were also great before many more jumped on board.
Iheanacho was a differential for those who got him in weeks ago and the list goes on.

I'm increasingly in the same boat. I've gone from a comfortable 11 with 1 playing sub using my FTs to now looking at taking a hit and still maybe only getting 10 out. Initial plan was to Salah, but I'm going to hang till post Leeds game and see what sort of Liverpool turn up.
Benteke could be inspired, but I think there's too much risk there, surely there's a better budget option?

Still can’t fathom Arsenal, Spurs, Man City, Atletico Madrid being supposedly “Super-Clubs” when they haven’t even won a single European Cup between them - ever - in history...

The irony is incredible - and without Bayern, PSG, Dortmund & the Russian clubs it’s not the full rich list either...

This will all turn out to have been a big wind-up by some mischievous intern or a particularly well orchestrated episode of impractical jokers

Or maybe they’ll add in some mega rich Chinese clubs to complete the madness

Can you imagine if Kane breaks his leg and you have that Spurs team bopping about in a self-proclaimed European super league...

Or Arsenal lining out every week with the Pep, Lacazette, Aubameyang triforce destroying everything in their wake...

Guess no one is reading the story. Joining super league teams would be given tens of millions in loans by the bank sponsoring it. So Arsenal or any other team could spend a bunch on transfers to improve.

Arsenal already have one of the most expensive front 3’s in european football in Auba - 56m, Pepe - 72m (omfg) & Laca - 46.5m

Throw in 45m on Partey, 40m on Xhaka, 37m on Mustafi, 27m on Saliba, 25m on Torreira... that’s over 350m... on absolute shite

Athletico deserve to be there tbh. Last 10 years they've been a top club and have always troubled Barca and Real (and beyond). I agree with Arsenal and Spurs though. They don't strike me as elite clubs and right now they are a shambles.

It is fascinating isn't it. The fact the German and French clubs have so far said 'non' and the federations all seem set against it surely weakens this latest powerplay. No Portuguese, Russian or Dutch clubs in there so far either.

As you say there are some genuine 'elite' clubs involved here (i.e. with incredible history and great current status) Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, United and Juventus and probably both Milan sides.
The rest are either clubs with a solid historic record who are doing okay but are hardly world-beating now or clubs with a less celebrated history who've succeeded very recently, possibly with help from massive external investment. No disrespect to them or their fans meant, I'm an Everton fan, not a lot for me to crow about in the last 30-odd years!

It does seem in reality the common factor is less about prestige and sporting ability/integrity and rather more about the attitude of owners and position in football's current 'rich league'.

On that basis, and considering they are already ruling out much of the competitive spirit anyway, plus the fact that the whole thing is being underwritten by an investment bank, perhaps they should get rid of the inconvenient footballing side altogether (footballers are expensive and unpredictable after all) and just create some form of 'Moneyball' league. Perhaps they could have an arean with monster trucks or cars or massive balls with the club logo on the top rolling about trying to pick up notes like in the Crystal Maze dome? Richest team at the end wins a prize (and some more money)?

My initial take is still that this is brinkmanship to further tweak the Champions League in the favour of bigger clubs and it'll be 'negotiated' down in a few days, but who knows? I really don't see how this could possibly be argued as being good for the game, the remark about it being done to better distribute cash across the pyramid is just insane.

2 points at home to Burnley cannot be described as anything other than disappointing.

Shaw has averaged 3 pts per match in 11 attempts against opponents with defensive fixture difficulty rating of 2 or less, and he's averaging 2.9 pts per match in 15 total home matches. So I would say he let you down "somewhat" today, as opposed to "badly"

I have WC, BB and FH left.

    Team:
    Mendy Sanchez
    Dias Regulion Saiss Stones Lowton
    Fernandes, Gund, Raph, Son, Lingard
    Kane, Nacho, Watkins

I'm thinking this team is fine for GW34 so use FH for GW33, Then WC the week before I BB on a DGW (whenever that will be)?

The highs of a successful wildcard last week to the lows of an underwhelming 2nd week and thoughts of almost mini wildcard changes (some potentially forced others not) .... This studio dragged out week of games is most unwelcome.

I am going nice, small green and just Bruno blanked up until now, but I only have myself to blame there. He was still good today I guess, and going without him with Burnley and Leeds was not sensible. Only Mendy could become serious issue, but nothing that can't be sorted with two transfers.

Mendy-forster the perfect gk pairing now right?

Forster covers tricky Chelsea fixtures 35 and blank 36?

Can this BB 35 team work out?

    Areola ¦ Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Keane
    Salah Son Lingard Saka
    Kane Vardy Iheanacho
    ¦ Pereira Coady Phillips

Yes, that is the question. Optimal midfield atm is something like:

Salah, Jota, Lingard, Son, Maddison, Greenwood

In my case, it's difficult to bench both Son and Kane and play Lingard vs Chelsea.

"will be blanking" is correct instead of "is going to blank"?

Sorry, not native writer and this phrase isn't widely used elsewhere.

Both seem correct to me. Again, I could be wrong.

"Will blank, might blank" could also be used as alternatives.

I’m not sure ‘blank’ is formally recognised as a verb but accepting this to be the case, I think it’s just a subtle difference between blanking which I think is a present continuous tense and going to blank which is a future form

Midfield is mentioned above by me. Kane and Iheanacho are probably forwards and TAA gas been def target player. Rudiger and Shaw are worth mentioning.

Don’t know about everyone but for me, even as an Arsenal fan, I will not watch that league for one minute. Will just have to forget about football altogether.

No satisfaction or pride about being in a league you didn’t earn the right to be in.
