And just like that, I find myself writing the last article of the season.

NOT AN ENJOYABLE SEASON?

FPL Gameweek 36 early Scout Picks: Brighton + Newcastle triple-ups

I’ll be honest. Just because of how the season has fallen after Gameweek 28, it has probably been one of the least enjoyable campaigns of Fantasy Football that I’ve played. And it has nothing to do with how I’m doing in Fantasy Premier League (sitting at 99k at the moment). Anyone I’ve spoken to, and this includes people that are having a very good season, is finding it a little bit like a chore because the schedule and FPL are gaming us, rather than vice-versa.

There are many things that have happened that make this season less memorable, in my opinion. The fact that we all had an extra Wildcard in all but name made 2022/23 fairly ‘easy’ on paper, with three overhaul periods leading to 80% of our players being similar in the second half of the season. The schedule after Gameweek 26 had a lot of doubles and because of this, the player pool was incredibly limited and we FPL managers consistently felt shackled when making our picks. There was just no scope for creativity or applying our minds too much because you were simply playing the schedule.

That said, it still is a game we all love and I will be eagerly awaiting next season with a big appetite. All things considered, we should be back to the good old days with a normal schedule and no Double Gameweek overdose in the second half of the campaign. In fact, in the last two to three weeks, I’ve enjoyed talking about next season more than I have contemplating the moves for this one, despite clocking a captaincy haul from Callum Wilson (£7.2m) in Gameweek 36.

PLAYING FOR FUN

FPL notes: Haaland haul, Ake rested + Solanke or Kane for Free Hit? 1

I wonder if there are any learnings from FPL this season?

From an individual point of view, in the last ten weeks of 2022/23, I’ve been reminded that I enjoy the game the most when I play for ‘fun’. I hope I will not stop myself from going for some picks next season due to reasons like staying with the pack. I think I now have the temperament to deal with extreme variance and have learned to detach from it emotionally. Having being shackled for a while, I think I do value just playing my own game, something that gives me joy. I think if there’s enough thought and research behind ‘playing your own game’ and a reasonable amount of not going too crazy, we should be okay. Right?

Having a permanent captaincy option like Erling Haaland (£12.4m) does help as you’re not really going to take extreme risks anyway because it would take a lot to bet against him for the armband. Maybe once I look back at the season, there might be a few more learnings but at the moment, our moves have been so dictated by the post-Christmas schedule that it is difficult for me to look past the ‘fun’ element.

My fellow Pro Pundit and pod partner Zophar made a good point when he said that people are so affected emotionally by the output of one or two players in their teams because they are the only players whose points actually matter, due to the template being so consistent and strong.

GAMEWEEK 38: SON TO SHINE?

Learning from 'The Great and The Good' FPL managers 4

FPL managers will be moving into punt territory in the final Gameweek of the season with everything except the relegation race and UEFA Europa Conference league position all but decided. I’ll just throw one gamble in there that I kind of fancy, someone who will be difficult to get to for most people involved. Despite the electric atmosphere that will be expected at Elland Road, I’ve got a feeling about Son Heung-min (£11.5m). Harry Kane (£11.4m) has been dropping a little deeper of late and I expect Tottenham Hotspur to get a fair amount of joy on the counter as Leeds United need to go for three points to have hope for survival. Son posted an expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 0.7 in the previous game against Brentford and I do think he has the explosiveness to go big.

Why not go Kane instead? Well, there is nothing wrong with it but we’re all ‘vibes’ in the final week of the season and I just have a feeling about Son. What I noticed about Leeds was that their heads were dropping after the game against West Ham United and I don’t know if the reverse psychology attempt from Big Sam will pay dividends.

In case you’re looking for punts elsewhere, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Liverpool are the places to go, in my opinion.

A THANK YOU

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit

That is it from me this week. I just want to take a minute to congratulate Neale, Tom and the editorial team at Fantasy Football Scout for doing an incredible job this season. The content has gone up a couple of notches and I’m not just praising the team because I write for the website. For as long as I’ve played FPL seriously, I make it a point to try to read everything written on this site. It has been my practice for the longest time and I genuinely believe just covering that arms you with all the ammunition you need to make your decisions. I would also like to thank Chris, Geoff and the editorial team for making writing so much fun as I’m genuinely given a free hand to write about whatever I fancy and unlike the second half of this FPL season, that has been truly liberating.

Also the last and the biggest ‘thank you’ goes to all of you reading what we type. I always have and always will be grateful for your support. Here’s to next season being ‘back to the good old days’.

Good luck with the final roll of the dice and if you fancy some more FPL content, we had a ‘vibes and laughs’-heavy final pod of the season which you can view below.

Looks like I'm selling Shaw now 🙁 Unless I play both Dunk and Mings. Wanted to get in a relegation fighter mid.

This must be one of the only, if not the only, season where three CL clubs have all dropped back and allowed three new teams to take their places...?

What were the odds on Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool all fading away? Massive! Often one new team sneaks in, but three...?!

I agree with that, the articles are superb so top marks to the whole team.

All for vibing on the final day, but leaks will be another constraint in a funny way.

I also think that the stats show that Kane often goes big on the final day. So, if it's him, or Son with a brace I'm more likely to back Mr consistency.

Great article, Lateriser, I had not given serious thought to the 'templatizing' effect of the world cup wild card right at the point in the season where having built a strong team should, in theory, really have helped managers who were doing quite well to double down on their advantage.

All that happened with that WC is it gave people a chance to 'catch up', helping neither category of player: players in strong positions found it hard to extend their lead without taking potentially suicidal risks, and catching players had to claw their way back into contention one or two differential players at a time, often taking one step forward and two steps back. I this is one of the reasons why this season as felt like a slog for pretty much everyone.

I am one of those that came back from an average ranking (c.300k) and now sit 17k. I agree its been a bit of a slog but the logic of the template being so strong that it is a hindrance to those who were doing well at the end of the first half of the season is a bit false. If that was the case, then those already up there would simply maintain their lead and everyone would have been stuck where they were and I would be the one complaining about that wildcard effect

You have done fantastically well to achieve that! I thought I was doing well have slogged my way into a 'mine to lose' 100K spot after a tough season.

But the Derren Brown horse betting episode springs to mind. Someone people made mostly 'right' choices can have all those choices hit, or some of them, or none of them, or anywhere on the spectrum in between. One player's outcomes can mean nothing against the wider whole. Equally good managers failed to make up this ground this year. You could end up in the same position next year, use the same player selection methodology and have most or all of them fail. You could go from 300k to 1m making similar decisions (as could I, it's nothing against you 🙂 )

You're a good manager and you are more likely to improve your rank in a difficult tine than to make it worse, but 300k to 17k is extraordinary and it wasn't a given.

Hah, nice call back to that TV episode. I don't think it is used enough as an example with FPL on here. As you say, there are 12 million players in this game. Of course some people are going to shoot up the ranks, it'd be statistically odd if that wasn't the case, it matters what the majority experienced.

    Why all this Kane hype?

He's a great player don't get me wrong but

    1. Spurs are poor
    2. Got nothing to play for
    3. Leeds will be 200% committed because they are in a relegation battle.

    Am I missing something?

I think it's primarily his consistency in spite of 1, and it's the impact that 3 will have on Leeds defensively, they simply have to win, so gaps will be left (and they're already bad defensively)

28 Goals - would have won the golden boot in 6 of the last 10 seasons - and that is despite his main man (Son) having a shocker of a season along with all the other Spurs players.

I think Kane's achievement this season would be heralded if it wasn't for a certain Norwegian taking things to the next level

While I can agree on the whole, I still think in a lot of these DGWs there have been opportunities to take some punts, heck that's the only reason why I've been able to claw back anything in the last couple of months. I saw some posts in recent days complaining of the same thing, this season being too template, yet even though we all have a free week of any punt we like this final week, those people said they wouldn't make any non-template moves because they still wanted to finish well. So which is it? If you won't afford yourself a move away from the same thing everyone else does in a week where there's no long term to think about then just be honest that you're likely to never do it because you want to stick within the template.

By the way this isn't really directed at you Lateriser, I know it's your article but you're one of the few regular ones here that I know actually does go with your gut and take punts which is refreshing at times. I'm just a bit sick of seeing some people complain about the template when they're the ones that will always stick to it no matter what (again not everyone here, just some people)

      It's a fair point.

Also some weeks, an independent transfer or two is verified by the 'wisdom of the crowd'.

It's also the case that with form and fixtures, most people have clustered around Newcastle, Brighton, Man Utd and Man City players.

There's 20 squads of at least 25 players, so 500 + and we all end up churning the same 20 picks.

But not everyone got Wilson at the right time!

ps: not sure if you did Nate, so this isn't aimed at you!

I agree with lateriser to be honest. I have found this season so dull and frustrating that Im actually considering not playing it anymore. It seems like every week I am hanging my hat on only 1 or 2 players whose points can actually make a difference. Haaland, Trippier and Rashford (and Jesus before his injury) have been players of complete irrelevance as their points make no difference. My feeling is that spoon feeding content creators and and FPL's increased popularity is responsible for this.

I have always disliked double gameweeks. They destroy creativity and lead to even more template teams and this season we have had far too many. Many times I have really fancied a certain pick but end up instead leaving them as they don't have any double weeks. I have tried this season to not go too all in with double week players and look more long term but this has created FOMO and anxiety.

I have never understood the excitement and hype around double gameweeks either. Do people not realise that your success or failure in FPL is not determined by the amount of points you get, its how they compare to everyone else and everyone else has access to the same double week opportunities so there really is no advantage or reason to get excited about double weeks. All they do is create a headache and lead to everyone targetting the same obvious picks.

FPL should not have allowed unlimited transfers after the world cup. Completely unnecessary. Instead they should have allowed maybe 3 free transfers.

Unlimited transfers for World Cup was a terrible idea, coupled with fact first wildcard had to be used before the World Cup.

There was a real fixture shift from 1-8 compared to 9-16. Without the above there would have been a real strategy choice in GW1 between either building a 1-8 team knowing you would WC around(ish) 8, or build a squad to take you to the World Cup with the intention of wildcarding out of it. That choice would have had the potential to create interesting differences.

The concept of 'the template' can be looked at in loads of different ways. Luke on Blackbox often has a pretty rational way of looking at it which goes along the theme of the template isn't inherently good or bad, it's just the logical outcome of the way the points system works. People should rationally follow the template. Even if you don't listen to ANY FPL content, as long as you understand how the point system works and you watch football then most of your team is probably going to be fitting the template anyway.

The other side to it though is that people who don't fully watch football and so haven't used the 'eye test' or bothered to look at the stats to see 'well this player has good fixtures and is in form so it makes sense to select them' are also choosing those same (template) players but pretty much purely because the Official FPL Twitter account that gives its 5 million followers direct tweets saying "I'd recommend choosing player X this week". You can give that negatively pointed wording like 'spoon fed' or just say it for what it literally is - telling users which players to choose without them needing to think about it.

The idea that everyone is free to 'make punts' can't be argued against but you can't logically get a good final rank by taking punts every week. You MAY end up with a good rank, but by definition a punt is a gamble. It is someone who is less likely to do well compared to a more standard choice. If you play punts every week then you are relying on luck for them to come out in your favour over the long run.

I'd hope to think that people who complain about the template are doing so on the points above, at least that's where I normally come from when I say that the template nature of recent seasons is making the game more formulaic and less interesting due to forcing players due a specific route in order to try and do well without just gambling every week.

As someone about 70 places above you, I think I would do Haaland, Salah and Bruno to DCL, Martinelli and Mount (gotta eliminate the top 10k competition....)

Seriously, I think the focus is probably on Alvarez and the Brighton guys for moves. I assume Eze or Olise can come in for one of the mids as a start. Kane in place of Haaland is a popular punt I suspect, but being on the cusp of 10k is it too punty?

Chasing a 31 point and 38 point lead in two leagues so it's very unlikely. However to have any chance I need differentials and feel that they will both take at least a -4. What do you think of the below:

Haaland, Sterling & Shaw > Vardy, Son, Van Djik -8

team would then be, starred are likely to be differentials:
    Kepa*
    Castagne* / VVD* / TAA*
    Salah / Mitoma / Fernandes / Son* (C)
    Wilson* / Vardy* / Enciso

    Raya / Estupinan / Coufal / Andreas

yeah perhaps i'm just getting carried away with the thought of leicester having something to play for, probably vardy's last game etc.

Any other defender recommendations? I suggested VVD only because it gives double liverpool defence when neither have any. So basically all or nothing!

Think defender options are pretty hit/miss really... Someone like Tark/Mina who have a lot to play for, good set piece threat against Bou who are pretty weak at defending them can be good options/enablers.

After a really poor first half of the season (1.5M after GW19) I've finally managed to claw myself into the top 100k, think it's the first time I could potentially finish that high! Currently at 78k, have 2FTs and .8M ITB
Can anyone suggest some GW38 punts for this team?

    Raya
    Trippier, VVD, Gabriel
    Mitoma, Bruno, Salah, Rashford
    Haaland, Alvarez, Wilson

    Steele, Shaw, Moreno, Willock

Rough: Transferred out Martinelli and Rashford for Mahrez and Gundo as a -4 to try and fluke some City double points. Gamble didn't pay off and a waste of a hit that cost me like 7 points

Vaguely smooth? I played Trippier and it seems some people benched him. Not sure that is really a smooth though.

Rough: felt like just about every game was giving me a red arrow - was down almost 50% at one point on Live FPL (excluding when Live FPL taunted me with Botman's 8 bench points until Rashford came on)

Smooth: Rashford and Bruno goals seemed to be enough to turn that red arrow into a very small green one, added to some Trippier bench jam.

Looking at my mini league it basically revolved around you did well if you had Rashford and Bruno, if you didn't have Bruno then you just did okay and if you had neither (when is rare) then you did poorly.

Unbelievable template at the top of my main paid league. Top 10 teams are almost identical.

I'm pretty pleased Bruno came good. I avoided getting Wilson with a Newcastle sideways shuffle as it would have prevented the move for Bruno - was a painful move as it dropped me out of top 10k. But Bruno has kept me well within striking distance so, whilst I don't think it was the better move, at least I haven't been punished too much.

OK I have one that kind of sums up my season - trying to be different and it 'nearly working' - at moment livepl is calling my team 'very differential'

      I did a -8 three transfers -
Toney - Castangne - Joelinton OUT
Enciso - Bruno - Shaw IN

Which left me in profit by 25 points.
      As I captained Shaw.
Who I thought was likely to get two clean sheets and bonus - giving me a massive score and good rank rise.
Of course he was subbed on about the 48th minute.

So after all that I still got a red arrow albeit a small one basically because I did not have Trippier.

Is your move not going from differential to template, no one has the players you transferred out and loads have the ones you brought in?

Enciso and Shaw(C) would both be differentials.

      Rough.
I did March Isak > Gundo Enciso for a -4 and benched Trippier. Lost 11 points as could have just done Isak to Enciso and played Trippier ahead of March. That Arsenal lose to Forest changed everything. Went from 3-4 points behind ML rivals to 20 points behind.

      68 PTS. 106k > 107k rank.

Another GW ruined right at the end, this time with the Rashford goal.

Sounds like mass rotation from Klopp likely. Trent benched?

That is what I am fearful of I would like to captain Trent with the logic that Klopp will want to keep him practising the new system.
      But I doubt it.

I have already given up hope that Greaiish, KDB, Rashford, Haaland, Shaw, Lindelof will start, or even appear at all. Why would they be risked? That is six players.

I currently have three Liverpool - VVD - TAA and Salah.

I think Rashford will start. Antony injured and he needs to build his fitness up for the FA cup final. No idea on the others though

Bruno I meant - not Rashford. I was thinking in my head as wrote it that Rashford could do better than Bruno. Hopefully Bruno starts anyway it is not as if he does much running!

Interesting looking at my season. Between GW19 and GW29 I captained Haaland once, rising from 860,000 to 16,650. Since then i've been back largely captaining Haaland and have yo-yod between 9,3k and 13k.

Feel like, in a season where i've made big gains punting against the Norwegian, one last time is the right move for getting that top 10k place sealed.

At what point does "differential" Eze stop being referred to as a differential because everyone is transferring him in?

He's been well owned since gw32.

Last week 925,000 players so will be over a million again this week you'd think.

At about half way through the season the overall ownership means nothing. It's all about how much someone is owned by those in the top 500k or so.

I'm chasing a 20 point mini-league leader so it's Haaland > Mbuemo for me I think. The guy has absolutely smashed it since his team mate got suspended and it's probably going to be the Manchester City League Cup team who will turn up at the Gtech on Sunday. Don't forget that Brentford had the measure of their first choice XI just before the World Cup break as well.

Its a good shout. I have Greenwood so making him Mbeumo isn't too challenging. City not keeping many clean sheets so gotta fancy his chances

      That's a good punt.

I had him when I couldn't afford Toney but sold him before his goals. He's upturned recently and Brentford are decent, especially at home.

      They've had a great season.

I am heavily considering Firmino (C) this GW.
Also, random thought, but do you think he’ll be given a penalty take if Liverpool get one being his last game?

Possibly, although more likely Milner if he’s playing too

Don't let sentiment get in the way of FPL decisions. If this was at Anfield I could maybe see it.

Anything worth a -4 here? Trying to protect a 10/15 point lead in a few, and then gain 8 points in another.

    DDG
    Trippier - Botman - TAA
    Salah - Mahrez - Mitoma - Eze - Rashford
    Haaland - Watkins

    Steele - Isak - Shaw - Zinchenko

"There were 13 bets on Mr Toney’s own team to lose in 7 different matches between 22 August 2017 and 3 March 2018.

Mr Toney did not play in any of those matches where he placed bets against his loan club as he was not in the match squad or against his parent club as he was on loan.

Of the 13 bets 11 were against Newcastle whilst Mr Toney was on loan at another club. The other 2 bets related to a game between Wigan v Aston Villa whilst the player was on loan at Wigan but he was not part of the squad."
