FPL notes: Kane top scores on final day

Another Gameweek 38 goal-fest saw 33 goals plundered on the final day, that rate of 3.3 goals per match once again beating the season average.

Leicester City and Leeds United dropped down to the Championship as Everton’s win over Bournemouth ensured top-flight survival for the Toffees.

Aston Villa secured seventh place and a UEFA Europa Conference League spot with victory over Brighton and Hove Albion, meanwhile.

There’s no Gameweek beyond this one so the usual Scout Notes will be of little practical use now but, for the completists, here’s a round-up of what happened on the final weekend of Fantasy Premier League 2022/23.

Neale rounds up the first five matches below, with Tom summarising the other five.

LEEDS UNITED 1-4 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Harry Kane‘s (£11.5m) best-ever FPL campaign hit new heights as he not only top-scored on the final day with a 16-point haul but also hit the 30-goal mark for the first time in his Premier League career.

In the end, his Gameweek 38 brace helped him finish only nine points beyond Erling Haaland (£12.4m) in the overall standings, having returned in 30 of his 38 appearances this season.

An ‘out of position’ Pedro Porro (£4.8m) returned to the Spurs line-up and hauled from a right-wing role, just as he had done in Gameweek 35.

Ryan Mason likely won’t be taking charge of the Lilywhites going forward but he extolled the defender’s attacking credentials after the game, and it’ll be interesting to see how the new Spurs boss – whoever it is – utilises Porro in 2023/24 given his likely mid-price starting cost.

“Possibly [his future does lie further forward] because he affects games of football. He scores and creates goals. I thought today his performance was excellent going forward and also he had the discipline in helping the team from a defensive point of view also. We’re very pleased with his impact.” – Ryan Mason on Pedro Porro

Spurs won’t have European football next season, something that may be a blessing in FPL given that the focus will be on domestic matters from the outset. But much of their appeal will be dictated by whether Kane stays and by the calibre of the incoming head coach.

We won’t be seeing any of Leeds, of course, following their drop to the second tier. They ended 2021/22 by conceding more goals than any other side (78).

SOUTHAMPTON 4-4 LIVERPOOL

The token final-day humdinger came at St Mary’s, eight goals unexpectedly being shared between the hosts and Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp made seven alterations to his starting XI, handing farewell starts to James Milner (£4.4m) and Roberto Firmino (£8.0m), so any Fantasy takeaways have to be taken with a pinch of salt given the second-string nature of his line-up.

But it was perhaps fitting that after a season of defensive vulnerability, in which the Reds allowed over twice as many ‘big chances’ as they did in 2021/22, the campaign should end up in a free-for-all.

Game-time being shared across five attackers also highlighted the problem we’ll continue to have up top in 2023/24, with four of them among the attacking returns. Diogo Jota (£8.6m) hauled on the south coast after a brace, with his total of seven goals from Gameweek 31 onwards only beaten by one other Premier League player.

Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) somehow emerged from the game without a goal, registering eight shots in all, his sole contribution being an assist for the eighth and final strike of the match.

Three shots and four chances created from Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) in his more advanced central midfield role underscored why he’ll likely be among the first names on the FPL teamsheet come August.

“We played a bad season and we came fifth, that is a message as well. Imagine we are more our normal self, which we absolutely will be again next season, then we will be a contender again. The last 10, 11 games helped us to realise that again because before then from a consistency point of view [it was] a season very difficult to understand.” – Jurgen Klopp

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 FULHAM

There were rests for some players ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup final appearance at Wembley but this match was just the latest example of why Erik ten Hag remains the Fantasy manager’s friend, as he once again was reluctant to rotate United’s key FPL assets despite the game being a glorified dead rubber.

Bruno Fernandes (£9.5m) still hasn’t been benched in the league under his new boss, while illness and an internal disciplinary measure were the only reasons why Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) was among the substitutes in Gameweeks 37 and 18. Both players started against Fulham, their underlying numbers summing up the difference in their Fantasy appeal in a nutshell: Rashford with six shots, Fernandes with six chances created.

It was the Portuguese playmaker, however, who was on the scoresheet here.

Luke Shaw (£5.3m) wasn’t risked as United failed to record another home clean sheet but David de Gea (£5.1m) still finished with the Golden Glove, his penalty save meaning that he ended 2022/23 as FPL’s third-highest-scoring goalkeeper and just five points off top spot.

Aleksandar Mitrovic‘s (£6.6m) latest miss from 12 yards was his fourth in eight attempts this season, so it’ll be interesting to see if Marco Silva strips him of penalty-taking responsibility in the new campaign.

“It’s up to us to keep working with him in this situation. If another one he has to take, he is going to take for sure.” – Marco Silva on Aleksandar Mitrovic’s penalty miss

“You are talking about two or three months, I have enough time to think about all the situations and prepare with the players.” – Marco Silva on whether Aleksandar Mitrovic will remain on penalties

EVERTON 1-0 BOURNEMOUTH

Everton’s decent home record under Sean Dyche saw them over the line in the three-way battle for Premier League safety, a deflected Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.3m) strike – his fifth goal in 10 games – securing the three points needed.

This was the fourth 1-0 win at Goodison Park since Dyche took over, their only away success under their current boss coming in that anomalous thrashing of Brighton and Hove Albion.

James Tarkowski’s (£4.1m) total of nine bonus points (two of which were added on Sunday) in that period has only been beaten by four other FPL defenders.

There wasn’t a massive amount of quality on show on Merseyside and there’s every reason to believe these two teams will be among the relegation favourites next season.

The Cherries – point-less since their safety was assured – finished with the third-worst defensive record in the top flight, the Toffees with the second-lowest goals tally.

LEICESTER CITY 2-1 WEST HAM UNITED

Leicester City dropped down to the Championship despite beating West Ham United, so expect the likes of James Maddison (£7.8m) to be on the move to pastures new over the summer.

Harvey Barnes (£6.6m) might also be departing, the winger signing off with his 13th league strike of the season: only five FPL midfielders, Salah, Rashford and the Arsenal trio, scored more.

One oddity with Barnes is that he has managed to hit a baker’s dozen of goals without gaining a single bonus point, his occasional wastefulness often costing him supplementary points.

One clean sheet in the last 23 matches was a big reason why the Foxes are now a second-tier club.

West Ham’s focus was and is on the UEFA Europa Conference League final in June, this match seeing the likes of Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) and Kurt Zouma (£4.4m) rested.

ASTON VILLA 2-1 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Aston Villa will play European football next season after a 2-1 win over Brighton on the final day. The Villans were 17th in the Premier League and only out of the bottom three on goal difference when they sacked Steven Gerrard in October, but Unai Emery inspired a stunning turnaround, with 15 wins from 25 matches.

With a few decent acquisitions and full pre-season under their belt, they will be ones to watch next year, although how they juggle those European commitments will be key, with more matches and travel.

Douglas Luiz (£4.8m) put Villa in front, before Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) ended his six-game drought with his 15th Premier League goal of the season. A dozen of those have been scored since Emery took over. Elsewhere, Jacob Ramsey (£5.1m) was unplayable at times, supplying the assist for both goals.

For Brighton, Pervis Estupinan (£5.0m) and Kaoru Mitoma (£5.7m) were benched, with Deniz Undav (£5.0m) scoring their only goal. It was a deserved defeat for Albion, but still, it’s been an incredible season, and it will be interesting to see how they recruit in the summer, with Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m) and Moises Caicedo (£5.0m) both expected to leave.

ARSENAL 5-0 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

Arsenal scored five goals on the final day for the second season in a row, with a thumping win against Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. Granit Xhaka (£4.8m) served up an unlikely 15-point haul, courtesy of two first-half goals, with Bukayo Saka (£8.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.1m) and Jakub Kiwior (£4.0m) also on the scoresheet.

Jesus set up Arsenal’s first goal for Xhaka as well, spending time on both flanks as well as upfront.

The Gunners ended the season on 14 clean sheets, a tally beaten by only Man Utd, despite a difficult period in recent months. Ben White (£5.0m) was once again charged with playing centre-back and finishes joint-second in his position for FPL points, on 156, only behind Kieran Trippier (£6.0m).

As for Wolves, they were second-best all match and offered nothing going forward.

BRENTFORD 1-0 MANCHESTER CITY

Brentford completed the league double over Man City with a 1-0 win on Sunday, courtesy of Ethan Pinnock’s (£4.4m) late winner from a Bryan Mbeumo (£5.7m) assist.

Pep Guardiola made sweeping changes to his starting line-up with two cup finals on the horizon. Erling Haaland (£12.4m) stayed rooted to the bench for the duration, while the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m) and Jack Grealish (£7.1m) failed to even make the matchday squad.

City’s fluidity understandably suffered, with Cole Palmer (£4.2m) their most dangerous player.

Elsewhere, it was a miserable end to the season for Ederson’s (£5.4m) owners. The Brazilian was on for a 10-point haul prior to conceding on 85 minutes.

As for Brentford, they missed out on European qualification but it has been an excellent season for Thomas Frank’s troops. David Raya (£4.8m), meanwhile, finishes as the top-scoring goalkeeper, with Sunday’s clean sheet his 12th of the season. He’s also claimed more save points (39) and bonus points (20) than any other shot-stopper.

CHELSEA 1-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED

Chelsea and Newcastle played out an entertaining draw at Stamford Bridge, which concludes contrasting campaigns for both clubs.

The Magpies will be in the Champions League next season, but Chelsea finished 12th, their lowest league finish since 1993/94. The only positive from the latter’s dismal season is that their key assets will be cheaper in FPL in 2023/24. Let’s hope Mauricio Pochettino can revitalise Reece James (£5.8m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.6m), given that the Argentine’s full-backs in a 4-2-3-1 tend to provide the width, while the rest of the attack is very narrow.

On the pitch, Anthony Gordon (£5.1m), who lined up as a central midfielder, opened his account for Newcastle, before Trippier put the ball through his own net to level it up, denying him the opportunity to hit 200 FPL points. Meanwhile, Alexander Isak (£7.0m) blanked despite being deployed through the middle, with Callum Wilson (£7.3m) benched.

At Chelsea, Lewis Hall (£4.3m) had another decent attacking game, with his set-play delivery excellent.

CRYSTAL PALACE 1-1 NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.6m) extended his excellent late-season form with the opener at Selhurst Park, as Crystal Palace v Nottingham Forest ended in a draw. The 25-year-old striker has scored six in his last four games and both he and Forest will hope there are plenty more to come next season.

Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m) – Forest’s newly crowned player of the season – is certainly someone who has prospered of late, too, with his assist for Awoniyi on Sunday his eighth attacking return from Gameweek 32 onwards.

Palace were on top for much of the second half and found the equaliser after 66 minutes, when Will Hughes (£4.8m) headed in from Michael Olise’s (£5.3m) cross. However, Eberechi Eze (£5.7m), who was one of the most popular transfers in of Gameweek 38, failed to return.

It means Roy Hodgson has picked up five wins, three draws and two defeats during his time as interim manager, although the 75-year-old has given no indication either way on whether or not he will stay on.

      I don't know but in the T&Cs:

Morning everyone. Hope your season came to a successful end and your ready for a nice break. Thanks for all your comments and advice throughout the year!!

Final rank of 10,603 here. Would be thrilled but being 1 point off the top 10k is a bit annoying! Haha.

Definitely the best half season I've ever had though, coming back from 1.23m in GW18 so it's been fun! See you next year!

Good point - 4th in Cambodia. That's really good as somehow little Cambodia always seems to do well in FPL. That's the second time you've won our league, proving that skill wins out over luck over a season. Very well done.

Worst gw rank of the season, over 10 million. Only a Salah assist. Held onto my mini league by 1 point after a 43 point lead.

Second highest total ever (2401) but worst rank for years. Have there been more points available than most seasons or is that just the standard rising?

I've got more points this season than when I had my previous worst season, yet this season has been my worst by quite some distance. Think it has to do with the fact there are 11m players now, and many of them are using tools and sources more than ever to get points. Coming to the realisation that OR won't matter soon(unless you're OR 1) and you just gotta play this free game for fun.

Super Harry Kane eh. Only finished 9 points off Haaland and single-handedly took me up the ranks in the final few gws cos none of my opponents had him. It took me half a season to realise how good he was going but once he was in he wasnt going anywhere.

Second worst OR. That said, finished on a high. Took a -16. Players I brought in scored 62 pts, vs 4 pts for those I sold. Too little too late.

My best OR by some distance finishing 8.1k (previous best 70k) started the day 9.9k and captained Rodrigo but still got a green arrow.

I'm not sure what I did differently this year but I usually only get over a ton once or twice a season if I'm lucky but this year I hit it 6 times. (Perhaps the standard within my cash leagues now is so much higher that perhaps its pushed me to do better?) Where as in the past I could win the league with my mates finishing 200k.. where as now I've finished 8.8k and is only good enough for 2nd.

Best finish for me as well (16k was in top 10k on Thursday) with 5 tons (normally get one if I'm lucky). I think the big difference for me was the timing of the second WC in GW27 with 4 of the tons coming in that GW or later (was outside the top 250k in GW25)

Depends if you enjoy spending the time or not I guess. I have the same thought. If I dedicated the time spent to something more productive I could probably learn a second language or something. But then life isn't all about being productive all of the time.

My struggle is that since I've become really invested in FPL, I can't really reduce my time spent, so if I really want to reduce, I'd probably have to quit all together. Kind of wish I could just be a semi engaged casual again sometimes.

    After GW25: 2.5m OR
    After GW38: 265k OR

No idea how I turned that around, I was actually 2.9m not long before GW25 too. 12 green arrows out of 13. No matter how much people want to use terms like "variance" in FPL, it's just a pointless way of talking about luck to me. Felt like I didn't have an inch of it for those first 2/3rds of the season no matter what I did or tried, but I know I've had a lot of it in the last couple of months to get up to a rank that's pretty bad for this place but great to me personally after one of my worst starts ever that just kept on going. But I'm glad I took some punts and tried to play my own way and that it paid off. Funnily enough I was actually more sensible than ever too with transfers despite chasing, only one hit in the last 18GWs (and none in the last 9)

That's a great end to season Nate. I too play my own way as I find it much more enjoyable.
Unfortunately now players like us will be punished by those that just copy other teams - I see no fun in that and love taking punts (not so much when they fail) and playing my own way.
The start to the season is crucial - I often, after 3 or 4 game weeks, find my self about 100 points down on the overall leaders - but I personally love the challenge then of trying to slowly catch up.
Good luck for next season Nate

Cheers mate. Yeah I've been used to chasing myself most years, last year was the opposite as I ran away with it and probably should have crept into top 50k but messed up my FH and last GW and ended up inside 90k. This time I just didn't feel I was in it as I was so far away for so long though but I still just tried to make it respectable. I agree about punts though, I would love to see pricing push people to make harder choices but I doubt it'll happen. Good luck to you too mate

I'll stick with the old convention of 2 premiums. In fact, perma-capping Haaland might mean one will do. Salah comes third in my premium list, so he gets lopped off (as it stands).

Who was your differential hero of the season?

After the points calculation yesterday mine is Mr Pinnock. Guy scored me two goals when other BRE defenders were more highly owned and yesterday he won me second place in ML (1st-3rd get money) just by cleaning City CS and not even being in my team.

Probably Steele. I had him earlier and played him more than most later-converts.

Yeah I bought him in a wildcard the day after his first start and he transformed my season - freed up cash for elsewhere and brought in the points himself. Genuinely my transfers of the season

Steele was also mainly great for me and I got him in immediately due to having Sanchez. Having Steele came with the expense of not owining Mitoma or MacA until March got injured so I fought against quite many highly owned players. And just because of that I see Steele only as a good differential for me. Also Raya scored big time almost every week, and he seemed to be the main choice for others without Steele.

Pinnock was a great shout - mostly under the radar with clean sheet potential and attacking returns

Kiwior for me - only got him in game week 38 (thanks to a post from Biggsy that I read) but his 13 points got me into the top 100k to finish the season

I did not own Pinnock for gw38 but he wiped City CS which made me keep my position in one money ML (rival had Ederson).

Previously this season I had owned Pinnock for two goals and great value for clean sheets. Only negative side is that due to owning Pinnock I have not owned Raya once this season.

Don't really have any one in particular as most that did well were jumped on by a lot fairly quickly so they weren't differentials for long. But for the ones that did me well I'd say Stones, Grealish, MacAllister, Wilson, and certainly Porro yesterday

Had Mbeumo and Pinnock since GW 22 based on xGi stats/ value but they both spent way too much time on my bench with higher value players doing nothing on the pitch

Sticking with Brentford Ben Mee from the start at 4.5m been great, but he was of course less of a differential than Pinnock as higher owned.

Differential of the last 10 games at least shooting me up the ranks was getting Eze in early for last 10 games of season. I was actually at Selhurst Park for that game v Leicester (first under Roy) and just knew when he came back he would get the best out of Eze again and 67 points in those 10 games for his bargain £5.4m outlay really helped my rank.

My memory's not good enough to do a season review but 12 points from colwill in GW37 when he wasn't owned by anyone in the top 10k was nice

Ferguson last week helped me to a respectable finish. I think I try to go too differential for the sake of it sometimes and can't actually remember many of them paying off this season.

Keeping Martinelli when the whole game seemed to bin him off was sweet, though. Similar for Salah before his mega haul against United.

Callum Wilson l made me a lot of money. Always done me well since I took him at the start in his first ever season. One of my best ever FPL players. One of the best number 9s in the league too. So underated

Kane strong contender, not just for last week but I'd held him since pre-WC wildcard (only losing for Isak before the Newcastle doubles which was a mistake).

My biggest differential was only captaining Haaland once between GW18 and GW30. Didn't pay off once or twice but mostly did and contributed to going from 860k to 11k

    13. Hairy Potter

Differentials came and went for me:

Mahrez from GW20-25 (held a bit too long)

Watkins from GW25 (maybe should have got him earlier rather than Felix!)

      Isak initially from GW28

Kepa, Chilwell and James triple up in GW29. This also dictated my FTs for following GWs, so I avoided FOMO misfires like Maddison, etc.

White for a period of still getting points when everyone jumped off Arsenal.

Steele and MacA for the Brighton doubles.

      Jesus in GW38.

Interesting list, I have had pretty similar choices but maybe one week late or early for Mahrez and Watkins for example to consider them either huge heroes or huge differentials. Watkins dgw was huge when Haaland was injured but quite many had him already then.

Pinnock was a great one for me after the restart.

Before the World Cup, getting on Castagne to double up with Ward when Leicester had their run of clean sheets

That helped me turn my season around from outside the top 1m when I wildcarded in GW8 to an overall finish of 1.7k.

The lack of hreat answers here suggests that differentials aren't a very good move. Good value players, sure, but they are usually owned by many in a very short space of time, and lose their differential status

Wildcard in GW8 and brought in Maddison, Bowen and Foden who all had really low ownership. This saw me go from 50k to 300th by GW11 with GW9 being a massive week. The other one was getting Wilson and captaining him in GW36. Apart from this my season was pretty meh the rest of the time so glad I got lucky with the timing of those picks

Estupinan was close to be the one for me, but got him two weeks early somewhere when RDZ took over. Noticed the huge attacking potential in him and the team, but he played only 45mins in the game I got him for and he was benched for the next 1-2 games. I shipped him out and then he got immediately back to XI and started firing.

I am still "proud" of my early choice even though it did not play out well that time. 😀

      Ben White.

Brought him in cos I couldn't afford any other Arsenal defender and he was decent enough, and really good from about GW30 onwards.

When I saw he managed 7pts when Arsenal conceded 2 v Bournemouth by scoring I couldn't believe my luck. He also came off once before Arsenal conceded banking a CS...

He'll get a hefty price rise, though. I'll take the cheapest nailed-on Arsenal defender; due to his long lay-off, I'm anticipating it'll be Saliba.

Trent made a late run; before that it was just Trips and Stupi. It caught us all out - pre-season we were all over the attacking wingbacks - Trent and Robbo, James and Chilwell, Cancelo, Peresic. Weird how they all failed.

I know it's way, way too early but before the FPL site closes I always look at next seasons potential team. 2 players (other than the normal ones) for me will probably be Curtis Jones and Jacob Ramsey.

I also feel under Poch Chelsea (with no Europe) could be good punts.

Any players you're already considering other than the normal ones?

I've posted my first RMT above.
I've currently got Jones, but I'm holding off Liverpool for GW1 until I see who comes in. Ramsey's a good shout up to 5.5m early doors, but I wonder if Villa will be over-extended by Europe. I've got Watkins in my squad, mind.

I don't worry too much about European fixtures early on as we have quite a few weeks before they kick in. When they do I agree the Villa squad will be quite light - subject to summer activity

Paqueta and Enciso for sure, unless fixtures are awful I'd be surprised if I don't start with them. Maybe Porro too but it depends on Spurs' window, I'm not really sure he continues in the OOP role under a new manager or with new signings

Both great shouts - I have a feeling both Enciso and Porro could be classified as midfielders next season though

Yeh, Enciso's a good shout. Brighton have a system of blooding newbies in the latter part of the season before playing them regular. If he takes Mac Allister's spot, he'll be gold.

West Ham assets might also depend if they're in Europe or not, but as Nigel suggests, that won't kick in until many of us have already played our first wildcard.

          1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
            • 3 Years

Yeah I definitely think Enciso is going to take that 10 role but the fact he can play further up if needed or even wider should be a good thing, he drifted wide a lot yesterday but had a good game, made a fair few chances

        2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years

I definitely think Enciso will be a midfielder, Porro has normally nominally played at RB so I think this was just a case of Mason changing the system or trying him further up but I doubt it'll be permanent. He's still very attacking though from there and hopefully retains most setpieces

This is a bit of a pointless exercise until the new player prices come out. As ever, the players who did well this season will be much more expensive. How much will Kane and Haaland be next season? I agree that the 2 you have mentioned though should be reasonably priced and good potential picks. The price of Son and Fernandes will be interesting. Rashford and Odegaard are likely to be at least 9m.

I'm really hoping there's a radical change to the deadlines next season one way or another. While I was out tending to my carrots, beetroot and potatoes yesterday afternoon, a young pup who got invited into our works' cash league made four transfers for a -12 just before 3pm. He replaced four eventual non starters (none of whom were injured) with four starting players which produced just enough of a yield for him to short head me within the shadow of the winning post. While I was outside in the sunshine trying to grow enough vegetables to make a hearty stew to gorge myself on in the autumn, the little b@stard was hunched over whatever social media little b@stards like him tune into these days, gleaning leaked information and committing subterfuge on the rest of us.

Proper sort these people out FPL. Either move the deadline way back to the previous evening or way forwards to the first kick of so that the Corinthians amongst us who get their team news from the likes of the Ceefax or Teletext are not at a disadvantage to little little b@stards like him.

Yeak my Kane(c) would have had even greater effect if so many didn't last minute transfer out Haaland for Kane due to the leaks. To be fair though the Man City line up leak was out quite early on FFS forum and Reddit FantasyPL.

Yeah same as I was bringing him in for Wilson but overall without the leaks I wouldn't have had such a great season but I genuinely don't like them. I also don't like how people are making money from it too. Of course we all take the advantage if it's there . It would be stupid not to but it isn't good for the game at all

Most sensible suggestion I've seen is to do it at the midnight/1am time that price changes happen. That would mean it is pretty much the same time every week, except for when there is a Friday game in which case it's 24 hours earlier.

It also solves the issue that, when you have last game at the end of one gameweek and first of the next on consecutive days, you have some time after last game to make transfers (although not sure we've had that situation post-COVID)

I think this works. I mean nothing is perfect and you can pick issues with any of it but leaks not affecting the game at all has to be the driver. I honestly don't understand people thinking making the deadline at the first kick off a good idea. It doesn't help people who have a life outside of FPL , are at work or live abroad and would have to get up at like 3am

I'm also on board with this, but I just don't think they would implement it being the night before. So therefore has to be kick off. Agree with the whole life outside of FPL sentiment, but loading up flashscore and seeing some actual lineups takes 10 seconds and you're getting accurate information. Waste far more life with the game in its current state.

    4. Mr. O'Connell
      • 11 Years

Don't intend to play next season, but for me it's first kick off. In a purists world, it would be 24 hours before the deadline, which would eliminate the leaks completely, but unlikely to happen due to less site engagement and makes the press conferences redundant (most of them are useless, though).

1 hour 30 is the worst of both worlds and gives all these wagonny social media accounts for too much traction.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

I do agree that a 24-hour deadline ought to be implemented. But I'm a pragmatist - one of my ML rivals saved his FH for GW38. He clearly picked his whole squad in the hour before the deadline, taking all the leaked news into account. Smashed it, he did. Far from being outraged, I'm minded to emulate the sneaky tactic next time.

24hrs is far too long as it would mean we wont have learnt the press updates/team news for some games. For me the deadline should be kick off time of the first game of the week.

      2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

I think I'm in agreement here. A day before is fine with me, but I think this is the most realistic "solution", because moving back the deadline won't stop some leaks (although I know for example Pep doesn't tell his squad the team until matchday) or people examining stuff like team buses or travelling squads. If you make the deadline at the actual deadline then you take the power away from the leakers.

12hrs probably makes sense as it allows to get all press updates.

I think this is a very complex issue - those engaged and on social media (or whatever it's called) do have an advantage, but fair play to them for being so committed.

It's also a World wide game so people in different time zones are automatically at a disadvantage.

The solution probably lies in the middle somewhere - either give everyone the time and information to make changes, or no one.

More importantly I hope your veggies grow well throughout the summer

Why are you still getting your team news from the likes Ceefax or Teletext ? You must have away of getting online otherwise you wouldn't be able to make changes to your team or post on here.

Harry Kane has scored 30 goals in a terrible team in the toughest league. Player of the year for me above Haaland.

Ive had him for about 90% of the season but typically after waiting so long for a haul, when it does come I didnt benefit from it as I didnt captain him and so many brought him in for Haaland because of the stupid unfair team leak.

I should have taken a -4 for him in place of Haaland. Didn't take advantage of the leak myself.

Easy to say after the event but I would never advocate hits on the final day unless you are unable to field 11. Its mathematically senseless as you don't have any further games from which to make the points back. You need the player brought in to score at least 5 more pts than the other player who would have played to make any gain at all. More often than not it wont happen.

I'm honestly very unsure. I felt last summer he was 100% leaving, and that if he didn't then that he was probably staying at Spurs until the end. I definitely think this is his last year for a move now, and I do think if he's going it'll only be within the PL. That being said I've seen rumours that Ancelotti really wants him at Madrid, and despite the history he can make with the PL record, if they do come in for him it will be a far bigger temptation than any other European club (not to mention the success moves for Modric and Bale have had). I'm beginning to feel like ManUtd may be too difficult, given his age and price I think they may look elsewhere

Kane any other season people would be talking non stop,
always gets 20goals plus & if not for Haaland would have had the
      Golden Boot

Blistering season with nothing to show for it and Spurs not even in Europe. I think he's earned his £100m move to United.

Sad - should have invested in the squad & decision to sack Rogers should have been either ages ago or personally I would have left Rogers to end of season as last min sacking do not normally work out

A classic case of "Too good to go down". But Vardy's legs had gone, and Soyuncu and to a lesser extent Tielemans played like they didn't want to be there and could have been sold for good money last summer.

206k. My worst finish since 2010/11.

I'm not even sure there's anything to learn from it - the season has just been so unfun from an FPL perspective.

Really hope they price Haaland at 15m+ next year.

Take heart Faux_C was a mixed one off with World Cup mucking up normal season
& the form of Brighton/Brentfor & Fulham excel against teams like Chelsea/Spurs & Liverpool whom failed?

teams over achieved & not expected from previous season with Arsenal/Newcastle & then Haaland

Yeah, was a strange season. Some dead teams from GW2/3 have done better than many active risk loving players, such was the template nature of this season.

Quite like the discussion on here today. A bit more reflective, throwing ideas out there... Better than the usual RMT stuff.

I’ll be interested to see which changes - if any - FPL make.

Agree the deadline needs changing one way or another - feels a bit of a messy middle ground at the moment.

I wonder if bonus points and scoring in general might be tinkered with slightly as well?

The game frustrates me like little else but the model in general is pretty great, managing to appeal to ‘casuals’ as well as the engaged crowds on here. Can’t see massive changes because of that.

FPL Focal (writes here occasionally as well as on Twitter) teased a number of changes are incoming next year but wouldn't say what they'll be. I think I remember some big accounts got a survey from FPL regarding stuff like chips last summer? Maybe that's part of it, people have been looking for the bonus point system to be reworked too as you say. Just talking to work colleagues this morning there would definitely be interest in seeing players like Rodri, Casemiro, Palhinha etc. being rewarded for the significant work they do on the pitch

FPLTowers rarely tinker. My guess is the deadline is moved but nothing else. The pricing algorithm might be shook up a little to deter too much templating.

I would like to see those players rewarded too. Anything that increases variance and moves people away from a set template is good for the game in general (and more engaged types like us)

Sorry to hear not playing next Mr O'Connell - your track record from post on this forum is brilliant - I wish to be able to find forum/template in the first half of season as GW 1 starting at 4,794,689 but managed from 330,371.

Give yourself the summer off & please come back next season - your views/thoughts I for one have found valuable in my first season on this forum.

That's 9/10 top 200k finishes for me. Think after 15 years I've finally learnt that at the start of the season it is necessary to go template. I always seem to be chasing, which suits my game but it'd be nice to not be so far behind at Xmas.
I think bb gw 1 and fh gw 38 are viable tactics too.
Also something what worked for me particularly good this year is not to focus too much on double gw players. It's the teams that go deep in fa cup that end up with extra fixtures and there's often rotation so if you don't get that player who plays 180 mins it often isn't worth it. (There are exceptions tho admittedly). My rival often got as many doublers as possible and I often outscored him with good single gw picks. This strategy often used less hits too.

Similar learnings for me. My slow start was mainly because of a divergence from the template just before the first deadline. Like penalties, don’t change your mind at the last minute! There’s a reason why so many us happen upon a strong template before the season starts: there are a lot of bright FPL minds here and naturally you’re going to come to similar conclusions on a lot of things.

As the season progresses and we learn more, that’s when we can use our initiative and go for differentials. Good not to fixate on doubles but Brighton and Brentford having such good seasons meant you more or less had to load up on those teams (as well as usual suspects). Hopefully fewer doubles next season will mean more variance

Agree with your take on double GWs — though it is hard to resist sometimes when fixtures look appealing. Will have to keep that in mind myself.

Pretty sure we'll be seeing RMTs without Haaland so they can afford Salah and KDB and Kane and everyone else — only to have to WC GW2 or 3.
