The Community Round Up

Season planning began in earnest this week after the 2015/16 fixture list was released on Wednesday. The search for teams with the best opening fixtures and potential rotation pairings was understandably the main attraction for Fantasy managers. The UEFA U21 Fantasy game was another key theme of the week, with our community writers and posters on hand to offer advice on the best transfers to make as the tournament progresses. Elsewhere, the community focuses on some of the new faces coming into the Premier League next season, while our Members stats section takes in some of last season’s top performers.

The Community Articles

We know the fixtures now, all we need are the prices to put the finishing touches to our team planning for next season. Dat Guy’s summer price prediction challenge, in which the community attempts to second guess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price setters, has already generated some interesting figures. Earlier in the week he collated the guesses so far and rolled out an average community predicted price for each of the 50 players in his list.

For those anticipating some budget-friendly prices, The Sarjeant has drafted this handy guide to Members on getting the most out of the season ticker to find the perfect cheap rotation pairs.

Elsewhere, RuthNZ’s summer long Premier League team review series continued this week with Everton and West Ham coming under his microscope.

For those playing the UEFA U21 Fantasy game, Saniul has created these pair of guides looking at the key players to consider drafting in from Group A and Group B.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The release of the 2015/16 Premier League fixture list dominated discussion in the community this week, as tickers were hastily constructed and transfer plans were put in place. The first amongst the community to get a working season ticker up and running was The Blue of Leicester.

For those looking to see how the Premier League fixtures dovetail with FA Cup and European competition commitments, Couti and the Below5th was another quick off the mark to make this fully comprehensive fixture calendar. Pasqualinho’s eagle eyes spotted a key part of the calendar for Fantasy managers, when, on the weekend of March 12, the FA Cup quarter finals take place at the same time as Premier League fixtures. This has the potential to create a bumper set of double Gameweeks, he noted.

No release of the fixture list would be complete without discussion around rotation, particularly in defence. Ruth NZ has helped out with his look at the key home and away rotation pairs for the season. Giggs Boson has also been looking at home and away options, to see if teams really do perform better on familiar soil, while blocks of home fixtures were the focus of Portsmouth Bubblejet‘s research.

Jaffalicious, meanwhile, has taken an even more detailed look at rotation options focusing on fixture difficulty to unearth some perfect pairs.

Saniul was among those to point out that Arsenal have a good opening set of fixtures in our discussion on last year’s top Premier League sides start to the season. Meanwhile, Nomar likes the look of Norwich’s defence in our assessment of the promoted sides opening fixtures.

The UEFA Euro U21 Championship game launched this week. For those looking to make changes and prepare for the final stages Roscola was on hand with some advice about budget and mid-price midfielders. There was further discussion courtesy of Saniul regarding the Germany U21 squad here. We also compiled this handy list of Group A’s set piece takers and those on free kicks and corners in Group B during the first set of matches.

One of our busiest discussions was around improvements to Fantasy Football next season. For CPTCrunch11 it was better points for defensive midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while for Jafalad the removal of the second wildcard in FPL is an essential change. Jafalad was back later in the week to start an intriguing discussion on the typical profile needed to win FPL, with issues like facial hair, marital status and age amongst key factors listed.

Newcastle are a team in dire need of improvement after a disappointing 2014/15 campaign saw them narrowly avoid relegation. With Steve McClaren at the helm, many are hoping their players can deliver, particularly as they are set to gain kind price tags in 2015/16. In our discussion on the Magpies’ prospects Innsie hopes that QPR’s Charlie Austin joins up at St James’ Park to give Fantasy managers another good striker option. Meanwhile, Pompeyfan will be keeping an eye on Tim Krul and Daryl Janmaat during pre-season, as well as their price tags.

Austin is one of a number of transfer targets to be included in Herzd’s price prediction hot topic looking at how much players would be worth if they move teams before the FPL prices are released.

Among those already on the move is Joselu, who completed his move from Hannover to Stoke this week. Our resident Bundesliga expert Portsmouth Bubblejet was on hand to enlighten us into how the striker will adapt to life with the Potters. If his recent history in Germany is anything to go by he is unlikely to make Doolittle‘s list of the best Premier League goals.

The Members Tables

For those looking to get an attacking defender in next season Bowstring has constructed this table looking at the most threatening backline stars of 2014/15.

Meanwhile Latchmere Wave Machine has been looking at the most successful selfish players, who score the highest number of solo goals.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

4 goals from Smalling, the same number as Ivanovic.

United's possession stats boomed to silly levels toward the end of the season. If they maintain that, or improve it with signings/philosophy, I can see a surge in CSs. A 5.5m Smalling could be a canny buy. He's practically VC atm, so I see him nailed after a great showing last season.

Keep up the work, I love looking into defensive stuff. With attacking players in generally easy to pick the good ones. Aguero, Costa, Sanchez etc will score well, it's not easy easy with defences.

    Hey guys,

I'm away in sunny Somerset this weekend so not sure if I'll be able to change my team at the last minute.

Berahinho -> Kadlec and Romagnoli -> Ilori

    4.5 (4)
    Terry 6.5, WBA 5, Smalling 5.5 (Yedlin 4.5, 4)
    Hazard 11.5, Mata 9, Caz 8.5, Siggy 7 (4.5)
    Aguero 12.5, Deeney 5.5, Striker 7.5

I would be very happy if I could achieve this

      Deeney with those fixtures?

      1. goriuanx
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

When it comes to strikers, I rarely ever take fixtures into account. A striker can have a bad game or play for a bad team but they still get a large proportion of attacking points. I think Austin is the best example

        1. The Sarjeant
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 11 months ago

I agree. But Deeney's unproven in the Premier League and has some iffy starting fixtures. Too much of a punt for me.

          1. goriuanx
            • 13 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

I take your point but Austin wasn't proven either but managed to score 18 in his first season, I think it's a mixture of a confidence factor and the strikers' home record in particular

              • 10 Years
              8 years, 11 months ago

Yeah, he could do well. But in my opinion I wouldn't want to risk it with crappt fixtures.

My rotation program really likes this one:

    4.5/4.5/4.0

    Sunderland ......lei........NOR.....SWA.....avl....TOT.....bou.......mun....WHU....wba....NEW
    Leicester..........SUN.......whu......TOT.....bou....AVL.....stk........ARS.....nor.....sou.....CPL
    Bournemouth ..AVL.........liv........whu......LEI....nor......SUN.......stk......WAT....mcy...TOT

    .
SUN, NOR, SWA, LEI, AVL, SUN, stk, WAT, wba, NEW

    .
Sunderland and Leicester have decent defences, and Bournemouth had the best CS record out the promoted clubs. Finding a 4.0m defender may be a challenge though.

Probably right. Kane on the end of Trippier's crosses would be an enticing prospect if Tripps could nail the spot.

Anyone fancy Kane early on? Decent fixtures, Man U away aside. If he looks sharp pre-season he'll be on my short-shortlist. Assuming the price doesn't get silly.

No. I like to start cheap at the back to keep the attacking 7 flexible to bandwagons, and there will be plenty. Following in Spiderm4tt and Simon March's approach 😉

Smalling may not even make it, this is just a shortlist.

I think you are wrong to say he's a liability, though. Look at the team he's been playing with - little protection from centre midfield (apart from a run of games when Lucas was in the team), poor fullbacks (or none at all) and a poor CB partner.

Personally I think Skrtel is Liverpool's best defender.

I think our defence is looking good. Our pressing game has really developed over the last couple of seasons, although we still have the habit of committing numbers when we dont need too. I'd say at 6m, good choice, any more, I'd say too much.

I hate to admit it but I think Arsenal are improving and with Cech there the defence will be really solid. Bellerin I expect to be 5.5 (plus Debuchy is around) so Kosc would be the one to have, right?

The numbers are higher than they should be because Liverpool rarely play a DM but he is a liability. The only times Skrtel has looked good in the past 2 seasons is when he had Sakho next to him. And Sakho, is by far Liverpool's best defender. If they don't sort his contract out, he'll be playing for a Bayern or someone in a few years.

90% passing accuracy, average pass of 19m
Kos has 89% passing accuracy, average pass of 19m
Terry has 88% passing accuracy, average pass of 18m

Him being clumsy comes from his method of passing, which is similar to Matuidi's. He looks clumsy but is far from it.

Mertesacker also has 90% pass completion... stats arent going to illustrate passing ability, hell, I think Flamini has something like 95% pass completion. Just watching Sakho, he looks a complete liability in possession. He is Yaya Sanogo reincarnate.

You said he's amazingly clumsy, mate. I don't know of a footballer with a 90% pass completion who is clumsy. He has 0.06 defensive errors, amongst the lowest in the league. His qualities are hidden because of Mignolet, Skrtel and no DM. Watch him play for France, you'll see how good he is. Ahead of Koscielny too, who I think is very good.

I agree he is good defensively, but I dont think pass completion is a good indicator of ability on the ball. Like Flamini and Mertz who are both poor on the ball.

Not sure how we can reach any conclusion here eithout watching a game tigether. 😉 😀

OK. I was quite impressed by Sakho when I saw him but have read a number of Liverpool fans saying he's a lump.

Bottom line is, Rodgers seems to be a good coach for getting the worst from defenders. 😕

I'm a Liverpool fan myself and I will tell you this, a lot of our fans are stupid and follow sheep. Sakho is one of the few players I'll back to the helm.

And yes, BR is defensively incapable. I'd like to see Manquillo Ilori Sakho Moreno. That defence costs 36m is probably better than what BR played last season , GJ Skrtel Lovren Moreno which cost 56m and is terrible.

If there was one thing I wish I could donate to, it would be towards keeping murderers in prison for as long as possible and make them understand the value of life.

Never been a fan of the death sentence personally.

Also, I was expecting Dylann Roof to just be another chidish prat who tried becoming famous the wrong way and expected that he would quickly breakdown, but he's much more coldhearted than that - he's maintained that stupid blank (smug?) look on his face throughout.

They don't need to know who's paying. Death might be the ultimate punishment, but I still think its the easier punishment.

Maybe we can find a midway point. Make them rot in prison for 10 years, and then give them a death penalty. Now everyones happy. Except the murderer.

Just finished watching Death Proof (and Planet Terror)

Woooohooo. Such amazing guilty pleasure. Seems like Tarantino had too much fun while making this movie and literally did whatever he felt like.

Planet Terror was one of the most fun movies I've ever watched.

But Death Proof? Really!!! Made me regret paying the £4 to rent the DVD. The ending was too silly in my opinion, and they killed the guy too easily. Could never figure out why it is rated so highly on IMDB.

To each their own, I guess.

They are not two separate movies. They had to chop and separate them coz in US people left the cinemas once Planet Terror ended. If you watch them at one stretch, it will be more fun

I just love Tarantino and for me, Death Proof was a movie to be watched from his eyes. Pretty fun (and that lap dance was sooooo hot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvJwSSPZm30 )

I watched Planet Terror because somebody recommended it to me and loved it. Only 6 months down the line did I realise that it is 1 part of 2. Then I rented Death Proof and watched it and just didn't get it (and so didn't my girlfriend).

Maybe i'll try watching them one after another some day.

Loving that Portsmouth Bubblejet hot topic. Bookmarked it last year and found it extremely helpful, especially around winter WC time.

Those blocks are worthy of consideration of wildcard timing, imo..

Perhaps a GW20 January WC? ie. earliest possible opportunity to use it, to take advantage of 6 GWs in the longest rotation block (see below) rather than use it on the last winter WC GW, which seems to be the generally accepted best week to use it on FFS (somehow this has become the thing to do because people wait for big signings which tend not to materialise in the Jan window anyway).
Or perhaps a GW8 WC to load up on 3 City/ 3 Palace? GW27 WC to load up on 3 Liv/ 3 WHU?

    *******
It is therefore the lengthiest blocks (GW 18-25) that will allow us to set up some potentially fruitful team rotations.

    – Man City & Crystal Palace play 5 out of 7 matches at home between GW 8 & GW 14

    – Liverpool & West Ham play 5 out of 7 matches at home in gameweeks 27-33

Bubblejet should get a Noble prize - genius. I'm not making the ''load up on 3 pool'' mistake again, lol. Think its best to have generally 2 players from each top team to maximise flexibility.

    Q. If Team A keeps a CS 50% of the time when playing at home, and play Team B who score in 50% of their away matches, what are the chances of Team A keeping a CS?

    A. It's 25% isn't it?

    Bloody probability!

    1. Pinky and Brain
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

I think it is still 50% because I would take into account the fact keeping a clean sheet depends on opposition scoring a goal. Team B has 50% chances of destroying a CS so Team A has 50% of keeping it.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

You might be right as if Team B score in 100% of their away games then Team A has 0% chance of keeping a CS.

        Thanks Pinky!

75% as far as I can see.

The two elements are not mutually reliant - you don't need to throw 2 heads in other words. The result can be achieved by (A) Team A keeping a clean sheet, or (B) Team B failing to score. So you only need to throw 1 head.
