Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku bags a hat-trick as Everton breeze past Hearts. Theo Walcott boosts his Fantasy stock as he snatches Arsenal’s winner against Wolfsburg, Newcastle new boy Georginio Wijnaldum nets again, whilst Palace taste defeat at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. Here are the notes from Sunday’s pre-season encounters…

Arsenal 1 Wolfsburg 0

Arsene Wenger made ten changes to the XI that swept aside Lyon 6-0 on Saturday, with only Mesut Ozil retaining his place. This saw Petr Cech handed his home debut between the posts, with a back-four of Hector Bellerin, Gabriel, Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal. Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla were stationed in the double-pivot, whilst Jack Wilshere, Ozil and Jeff Reine-Adelaide tucked in behind lone frontman, Theo Walcott.

Reine-Adelaide supplied the pass for the only goal of the match, as Walcott strengthened his claim for a central berth by slotting home just five minutes after the break. Wenger made five alterations over the course of the second period, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud afforded further minutes off the bench.

Post-match, the Gunners boss had plenty to say over Walcott’s performance in an interview with the club’s official website:

“Another goal for Theo and I’m not surprised by that because I played him through the middle. I’ve always said that he’s a goalscorer because he has the movement, he has the timing of the run, the speed for the finishing, and he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moments. When he gets into these positions he finishes well. Yesterday he nearly scored when he came on as a substitute, today he scored. I believe that Theo will score goals. In his ideal world he would like to play with a strong guy next to him, a player who is very strong physically, and he play off him. We have so many offensive players which makes that very difficult to combine all of them together.”

Wenger’s line-up for the Community Shield on Sunday will clearly give us the clearest indication on his thinking ahead of the season opener against West Ham. Walcott appears to be in the driving seat to claim the striker’s role, leaving Olivier Giroud potentially frozen out to the bench in a repeat of Arsenal’s previous Wembley appearance for the FA Cup final. While Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla remain clear early midfield targets in the light of Alexis Sanchez’s expected Gameweek 1 absence, Walcott has emerged as potentially the most explosive option. He has currently claimed 7.8 ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Hearts 1 Everton 3

A Romelu Lukaku hat-trick steered Everton to victory at Tynecastle as the muscular Belgian showed poise from the spot to convert two penalties. Gareth Barry was fouled in the box to allow Lukaku to strike home his first goal, while Seamus Coleman’s assist then set up the striker for his second to hand Everton the lead. Kevin Mirallas was then brought down to allow his compatriot to complete his hat-trick.

Significantly, the 3-1 victory marked the first pre-season appearance for Leighton Baines – confirming the fact that Lukaku is now ahead of the left-back in the pecking order for spot kicks.

Baines took his place in a first-choice back four that was made up of Coleman, John Stones and Phil Jagielka playing in front of Joel Robles in goal. Roberto Martinez deployed his side in an attacking 4-3-3, anchoring the midfield with Barry, James McCarthy and Leon Osman. An attacking trio of Lukaku and Mirallas, flanking Arouna Kone through the middle, provided the threat.

The likes of Tom Cleverley and Ross Barkley were reduced to appearances from the bench. Bryan Oviedo was also amongst one of the subs introduced in the second period as he made his belated return from injury.

It remains to be seen if Martinez maintains the new attacking 4-3-3 setup, although post-match the Everton boss was clearly enthused by his side’s display…

“Going forward we looked a threat, but then we always kept a good balance and only a lapse in concentration early saw us concede from a dead ball situation. Apart from that I thought we kept our defensive duties to a good level.”

Sporting Lisbon 2 Crystal Palace 0

The Eagles ended the inaugural Cape Town Cup with a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. Alan Pardew again kept faith with the 4-2-3-1 setup but shuffled his pack following the 4-0 win over Supersport United two days ago.

Alex McCarthy made his Palace debut in goal following his move from QPR; he played behind a back four made up of Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Damien Delaney and Pape Souare. James McArthur and Johan Cabaye were deployed in the double pivot, with Jason Puncheon, Jordan Mutch and Dwight Gayle in the attacking three, supporting Glenn Murray up front.

Pardew was again without Yannick Bolasie through injury, while Marouane Chamakh was also absent and Wilfried Zaha was limited to a cameo role from the bench following a recent knock. Post-match, the Palace boss bemoaned the lack of creativity from wide areas…

“We lacked a little bit of width today – Zaha hasn’t been fit and only trained for one day this pre-season so that was his first 10 minutes of action and Bolasie was injured in training on Thursday and it’s a shame he wasn’t involved because we probably missed a little bit of his x-factor.”

This would suggest that we’ll see a different attacking three take to the field against Fulham on Saturday, in a line-up that is most likely to reflect the teamsheet at Norwich on the opening day.

Sheffield United 2 Newcastle 2

Steve McClaren continued with a 4-2-3-1 formation for the trip to Bramall Lane. A back-four of Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor and Massadio Haidara sat in front of Tim Krul, with Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita stationed in the double-pivot. Further up the field, Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ayoze Perez took up the attacking midfield spots behind Papiss Cisse, with new signing Aleksandar Mitrovic yet to be involved.

Wijnaldum (7.0 in FPL) netted his second goal in as many appearances for the Magpies, courtesy of a Papiss Cisse pass, before Siem de Jong – one of seven second-half substitutes – notched his side’s second after slotting home a flick-on from a Colback corner. Although Steven Taylor (4.0 in FPL) started at centre-half again, McClaren is clearly determined to strengthen at the back – the Magpies have agreed a deal for Anderlecht centre-half Chancel Mbemba, with the FA expected to confirm the transfer on Thursday.

The Newcastle boss also played down rumours of a move away for Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine has yet to play a part in pre-season due to injury and has been linked with a move to Palace but McClaren is clearly keen to keep him:

“We want him playing. He has got a little niggle, which he has every season and that has to be taken care of. He is working on conditioning. In America he was out most of the time because of the surface in the last game. We are still working and have time. He needs to have a good week and needs to play Saturday. We need him in the team. I have come in and they have told me to assess the squad. Colo has come in and I have been delighted with his attitude and the way he is around the place. That’s great – but we need him on the field. I looked at Coloccini in training and he’s one of our best players. I know things were difficult last season but I want him out on the field in a Newcastle shirt. He’s great for the team.”

After the match, new signing Wijnaldum admitted he’s still suffering from jet lag after arriving late to the club’s tour of the US before returning to the UK just a few days later:

“It is always hard to play after a flight of 10 hours but what is harder is that a lot of players still live in the time that they have in America, so most of the time I wake up at four o’clock and I can’t sleep any more – today I had the same problem. I am always pleased to score goals and always happy if I make goals. I’m always looking for that one chance and today I had that one chance, when you get it you must be ready.”

What do you guys think of this draft? I know Guzan may be late because of his Gold Cup involvement but I don't intend playing him in GWs 1&2.

    Schmeichel - Guzan

    Ivanovic - Mertesaker - Cedric - OShea - Prodl

    Hazard - Cazorla - Mane - Albrighton - Ritchie

    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

Is the team too heavy in defence? Should I downgrade Ivan to Azpi or Cedric to a 4.5, and use the spare cash on upgrading Albrighton?

    Thanks!

    Hazardous to go without

Looking at my own and others RMTs a key issue is emerging - do you go with or without Hazard. I've tried tinkering around with a team without Hazard and it looks far better than my one with him. Even with the almost as expensive Costa as Chelsea coverage teams look better without Hazard I think. But despite Chelsea's tough fixtures and Hazard being best against weaker sides I still can't shift the midfielder from my side.

Fear is the key consideration. His whopping 54% ownership means that a Hazardless team is one penalty and bonus away from a potentially poor week - especially if a large chunk of that 54% captain him.

My heart says Hazardless, my head says Hazard. But which is right? And which are you going for - a Hazardless team or one with the Belgian taking centre stage in your side?

Exactly the situation i'm in. I just downgraded Haz to Fab and it let me upgrade my defence, Ritchie, and Ramsey to Walcott.

But, I just don't feel comfortable not owning him. That first game against Swansea, he has potential to really explode, then rather than just reshaping my team to get Aguero, i'm then struggling to get Hazard in as well - which probably means an early wildcard.

I think the best bet is play it safe and start with Haz, unless we find out Aguero is fit to start, then we can think about downgrading Haz if we create a route for getting him in if he does deliver.

I agree. Play safe and start with Haz. Just imagine how you'll feel after Haz scores from penalty after 20mins of play in gw1....

Hi AZ - you are right. The point you made about having to get Haz in as well as Aguero would be a difficult task. I've got Haz from day 1. That's one issue I don't need to deal with after GW1.

Its for that exact reason, close to 2 million people are going to captain him gw1, and its that opportunity to start ahead of that many people that makes me not have him in my team. Its gw1 the perfect time to take a risk.
As for getting him in...take a hit. Many overall champions have taken a hit and still finished on top.

Its a risk that can be easily avoided and a precaution which can be easily fixed with a FT, not least of all because he frees up 11.5 to work with; a handy advantage over others who can't free up those kind of funds after the season starts. We can essentially make a more educated decision on who is best to use his funds on whilst pre-season non Hazard owners are trying to make that decision now.

As you say, it is about the biggest decision to make. I am going without just to have better points cover across the players. As you say, a very dangerous move though.

I'll personally be going for Fabregas for the first few game weeks. Mainly because of his explosive starts, and against Man City he might get deployed further up the pitch with Mikel/Ramires and Matic holding. And like you say, Hazard is better against weaker teams, and the first 8 or so games are against mainly strong opponents

This is why I think choosing only Haz is the best way. Safe captain pick for gw1 and Haz will get you stead points going forward even against harder teams while Costa can't give you the same guarantee (I feel).

Hazardless for me. Fabregas had more points than him after 5,10 and 15 GWs. More points + decreased difference in price . Hazard is primarily close to essential status when and if Chelsea play striker less later in the season looking for 1-0s or 2-0s.
Its his overall points tally that influences people, but FPL depends on who you own and when.

Costa is the expendable one from the Chelsea attack. Personally I'm starting with Hazard & Fabregas and plan to ditch either Fabregas or Cazorla GW4 to fund Rooney to Kun. Going without Hazard at the start is far to risky

I've been playing with this one, and I think that ultimately it comes down to the fact that I can get a much better midfielder (Sterling, Ozil, Walcott, Ozil, Cazorla etc.) with Costa than the striker (8.5 or below) I get with Hazard.
For me, I think I'll start with Costa and then see if it's necessary in an early WC to switch and get Hazard, as his price probably won't rise that much in the first few GW's due to high ownership.

I'd decided to go Hazardless and get Fabs instead since the fixtures were tricky.. However, with Aguero not back in training and Sanchez out for a few weeks there's no place to spend my money really. So Hazard IN it is.. Him/Rooney/Wally/Benteke offer me my captain choices for the first few weeks

If I go without Hazard, I would double up on Chelsea attack with Fabregas + Costa. Would lose attacking coverage spot of another team...But I think Costa is more captainable than Hazard.

I'm going without and will get Fab instead. Main reason is that beside 1st GW there is not any more weeks early on where everyone will be capping him (GW 4 when he have Palace at home Man City have Watford so i thing Aguero will be obvious cao there). Difference of 2.5 mil betwen Haz and Fab is imo to much, and it could be used to improve 2-3 players acros your team.

Ofcourse there is a possibility that Haz explodes GW1 but still i wouldnt get him with City and WBA away game in next two. Will get him at some point, probably when i WC

He's probably the best player in the league, in the best team in the league. It's Costa and his classic 'goal + YC = 5 points' I'm happy without. I think even if you start with not having Hazard in, you'll end up putting him in.

For me this is dead easy. There are 5 or 6 players that FPL has (deliberately I think) priced protectively. Hazard, Sanchez, Aguero, Costa, Silva. Possibly you could add Rooney to that list as well.

You cannot have them all and none of them will represent good value unless you use them as a captaincy option. You can have maximum three without unbalancing your squad. Take your pick.

Aguero is probably going to be one for most people. Costa or Hazard but not both. Sanchez or Rooney but not both. Maybe two of those, possibly three at a stretch. You can't have them all.

Hazard was the one player that remained in my squad for 38 weeks last season. This season I am planning to leave him out. Doesn't concern me at all.

Yeah, I'm thinking heavy hitters are only worth having if you are going to be captaining them. So, in fact, I am thinking of having only two of that elite class. Otherwise you end up with rubbish everywhere else.

I'm gonna start without and see how it goes.
If you look at his PPG last season vs his cost, he is average value, but then there are those captain points.

But I see other options that will likely do better, so I am going with my head.

I'm wrestling with it. 11.5m doesn't seem that much compared to previous Ronaldo or Lampard prices, but it's relative prices that matter and with prices being a bit lower across the board this season, it seems a high price. Particularly with all those lovely 8.5 options. Instead of Hazard and a 5.5m, you can get two crackers at 8.5m.

Problem is, with Aguero out initially, Hazard is probably the best captain choice and when you're buying someone who'll be captain a lot, price almost becomes no object.

I've been having Fab instead of Haz since my first draft until I saw how Young played for United against Barca. He's probably the second name on the team sheet after Rooney so I switched from Fab & Mata to Haz & Young. The rest of my team still looks balanced with options to trade for Kun in GW4. I've now got captain rotations between Haz and Rooney until Kun comes in now so personally I think that'll be better.

      I'll go with Hazard. Why?

Firstly, I've created a team with him and am quite happy with it.
Secondly, I genuinly think he'll outperform Fabregas enough to justify the extra 2.5m, and also when considering captaincy he is well worth the extra.
Thirdly, as you say he is only a penalty away from a double digit score and I personally think Chelsea will get more penalties next season compared to last. There is a recent hot topic on this.
Finally, when considering captaincy alone Hazard is well worth it. With Aguero and Sanchez missing for the first 1 or 2 weeks, I don't wanna rely on Rooney as a captaincy option.

WC timing will be key to this sort of Haz v Fab decision. If you are planning a quick WC it makes it easier to put Fab in.

If Haz was off pens it would make it easier to leave him out - but one stroke of that foot and its likely 8 points just like that.

I'm going without - don't plan on captaining him in any of the first 4-5 GWs so I'm happy to spread the funds elsewhere in my team. Ownership is not a good enough reason IMO.

      Big dilemma tough call!

      At min I have

      Butland ruddy
      ivanovic mertesacker/lrscott huth Richards yoshida

      Fabregas, Walcott, Milner, Silva (wanyama)
      Rooney Kane/Costa deeney/Wilson

With hazard looked lot less good, but catch 22 if does well could fall way behind

No Hazard but I do have Rooney, Giroud, Walcott, Sterling, Erikson.

If Chelsea had better fixtures I would have him in + how will managers cope with having him and Aguero. The teams I have drafted with both are materially weaker so I think many will downgrade Hazard in GW3.

I say as long as you have one after GW3 I don't think it is a big risk.

I think the Hazard decision is a tough one, but not because of ownership. He is a great player but has only one comparable player at his potential in terms of both price and potential, Sanchez. Ultimately, I would rather have Fabregas and Sanchez than an Arsenal mid and Hazard, I think.

Even so, I am surprised at the ownership line of reasoning before the game has even started, since much of the richness of the Smartypants/fpldiscovery site and its statistics about TSB% comes not from predicting future performance but rather from explaining what the top 10k has done in the recent past.

Without a benchmark for what a good team is, who cares what others are doing? IMO, if you are playing the game from the beginning not to lose or fall behind, you are more likely preventing yourself from winning, whatever your goals may be.

I'm happy to go without Hazard for the first few GW's due to CHE's sched...

Season long he'll outscore most but, there's better value to be found early in the top price brackets.

After reading some of the comments I felt that you can make a strong argument for both Hazard / Hazard-Less teams. Therefore, I think there is not a clear-cut right answer, it depends on who you talk to.

Either way, I believe you should choose whichever team does not disrupt your overall team chemistry and can adapt to various scenarios that change from one game week to the another.

The true question should be, will you have Hazard from Game week 1? Because, at some point during the season I can everybody owning Hazard at least once.

I saw a comment during the end of last season when I was at work, showed Fabregas first 15 games for the last six seasons and then the stats for the last 15 games.

Its like night and day,,,Fab really does start well and then fades as the season comes to an end.

Great point Jonty, but as you rightly point out it's too dangerous to leave him out. I feel he will only get better, there is a very good chance that he will hit the trajectory of CR - maybe not so dramatic in terms of goal tallies... but sooner rather than later he will hit the 20 goal mark..

I also feel that the topic of Sterling is more important and could be a key player for the season. With Bony and Kun out for the opening stages of the season. Jovetic on his way out and Dzeko not being favored at all. I think Sterling will play through the middle, and with the likes of Yaya and Silva behind him he can and will run riot

The main issue for me is his start last season. He had a decent ownership, but nothing like the dizzying highs of 54%. Pretty sure he didn't return any kind of haul for the first few games, then scored, then was most transferred in that week but didn't return for the next 3-4 GWs so slowly got transferred out again. I got him in week 5 and had to wait about 3-4 GWs for any returns. Good job I held on to him of course but the key is he didn't kick on until around GW 8, 9 or 10 mark. Not sure if this was down to tricky fixtures, problems off the field, his poor away form at the start of last season or just plain bad luck.

Either way I'll be getting him on a just in case basis. Like Jonty says, how on earth would you cope if he slowly accumulated decent points across the first 5-6 weeks or hauled in jackpot in any of the first 3 weeks. Its a risk that can be easily avoided and a precaution which can be easily fixed with a FT, not least of all because he frees up 11.5 to work with; a handy advantage over others who can't free up those kind of funds. We can essentially make a more educated decision on who is best to use his funds for whilst pre-season non Hazard owners are trying to make that decision now.

My other issue is I never had Costa once last season but suffered minimally due to decent GWs without him when he returned big scores, a feat I am very proud of. Is he a MUST if Haz and Fab are not returning at the start of the season? Probably.
Costa may be a beast but he has very ugly lack of respect when he's on the pitch, one of many things which make me mad about the state of football today. No excuse for players to behave so poorly when you see the sportsmanship of rugby, cricket, tennis and athletics who, for the most part, have plenty of respect all round whilst footballers think the 90 mins are free pass to do what they want to get what they want. You can shake hands before and after but it means nothing if you act like a young child during the game. Can't stand it.

When you rotate between defenders + Goalkeepers... And a certain rotation end up playing against each other because the other option is a Chelsea Away for example.. Would you say play the Chelsea Away, or play the two players against each other? Or should I scrap the rotation altogether if they end up having to play each other?

I'm going to be very honest here so sorry in advance, but I don't like either, the defence of A is quite weak and I am really not sure about tadic. B's defence is slightly better but still not great, and Ashley Young is not a good option imo. I also personally prefer a goalkeeper rotation. Hope it helped a bit 🙂

Am I right in thinking your defensive rotations are Williams/Huth and O'Shea/Francis?

Crossed my mind that the poor defensive performances pre-season could bring a Mourinho bollocking and a tightening up. Also Gomis is borderline fit first game for Swans. Could go either way. But if they do come out all guns blazing again I can see them conceding like last year.

Has anyone played around with a team with two budget strikers? Such a tactic would've fared well last season. For example, my current iteration looks as follows:

    Panti / Butland

    Cedric / Lescott / Alderweireld / O'Shea / Cameron

    Mata / Sterling / Hazard / Eriksen / Mutch

    Wilson / Aguero / Deeney

Anyone think there's merit to such a structure? It would have fared well last season, in which few expensive strikers delivered value, whereas the top-flight mids tended to perform consistently.

Why is no one going with Ramsey and Mata who are good uniques.

Mata hit form end of last year and been in everything for United in the friendlies. He is one of the few players for Untied who should rarely be rotated. Also when Ramsey plays.. he scores. Only question is that will he play deep with all the Arsenal attacking options??

I was in 2 minds about Mata, mainly due to Di Maria being a threat to his game time. But if the reports are true that he might be off to Paris, then I'm strongly considering Mata, plus he should be on penalty duty. Thing with Ramsey is, there far too much competition in that midfield, there's a huge risk of rotation, and if anything is to happen to Coquelin, Ramsey will more than likely play deeper. Ozil, Cazorla and Sanchez are only ones nailed on when fit.

it all depends on your funds elswhere, I think Silva is too expensive, but that can quickly change if he score a goal in 1st GW. I'll just probably start without City and then jump on Aguero when he's back.

If money is no issue Silva every time, after last season he wont be as goal shy as he has been in the past and wont be short of assists either. Worth the extra cash.

In the Members section is there any tab/function there which can show me a players performance in each match?

The Player profiles page just lists the results and ICT rather than the individual stats themselves.

Actually it does not even list results.

I don't quite get the Sakho hype. Is he that much better than Deeney/Wilson?

You saw how good a goslscorer was in the first half of last season, the other two haven't played in the PL before.

Good fixtures, gun playmaker in Payet feeding him the ball, great in patches last year, good track record previously.

Sakho is slightly less overrated, as he's actually played in the premiership before.

WHU got some decent home fixtures - so too Bournemouth to be fair - Watford have a worse start

They have terrible away fixtures though. I wouldnt feel comfortable playing him every week...

Anyone worth starting at 5.0 in midfield? I love Aarons but I'm not sure he'll start (plus the worst fixtures in the league). I don't want to shave any more from the rest of the team.

Cheers for the response. The problem is that Ibe is simply Aarons in a different shirt: a kid with boundless talent who has his path to the first team blocked by more experienced players.

Gomez (sunderland) or Hoolahan? purely because of penalties. However, I think Mcmanaman could be a good differential when fit he looks dangerous (i'm a baggies fan though so probably biased).

not unless rotating, I like Jed if he plays no other PK-taker at 5.0, unless Hoolahan gets on.

    Ruddy, Butland
    Huth, O'Shea, Azpi, (Williams, Baker)
    Silva, Cazorla, fabregas, mane,
    Kane, Costa (sakho)

Please help me fix this team. Is Silva worth it? Should I drop Williams to a 4.5? ozil???

keep Williams to rotate with Huth
      Silva.> 8.5
Butland rotates with Speroni long term That BUT/RUDDY looks much better after gw4.
Baker>Targett will get at least 1 home match.
