Moving Target

Moving Target – Jonny Evans

Tony Pulis continued the reshaping of his West Brom squad on Saturday with the signing of Jonny Evans from Manchester United in a deal reported to be worth up to £8 million. The Northern Ireland international has penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns, and could make his debut against Southampton on September 12.

Speaking about his latest addition, Pulis spoke of his happiness at being able to bring the experienced defender to West Brom:

“This is a great signing for the club. Jonny brings a lot of experience and will be a big player for us – he’s a player I’ve been watching for some time and we are delighted to have him.”

THE HISTORY

After being spotted playing for his local side Greenisland FC by Man United as a youngster, Evans eventually joined the Red Devils in 2004 after his family relocated to Manchester, with his younger brother Corry also part of the United youth setup.

He made a handful of appearances for the first-team during pre-season in 2006, although Evans then spent the first half of the year on loan at United’s Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp, where he made 11 appearances, scoring two goals. The defender then spent the second half of the 2006/07 campaign on loan at Sunderland, and helped the Black Cats to promotion to the Premier League.

Evans made his United debut in the League Cup against Coventry in September 2007, but was then again sent out on loan to Sunderland for the second half of the 2007/08 season, and helped Roy Keane’s side retain their top-flight status.

The Northern Ireland international never properly established himself as a first choice at Old Trafford, with the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons perhaps being his most successful, when he racked up 52 league appearances, scoring four goals. In total during his time at Old Trafford, Evans managed 131 appearances.

The 27-year-old defender made his international debut against Spain in September 2006 in a memorable 3-2 victory. He currently has 41 caps to his name, and has scored one goal, against Poland in 2009.

THE PROSPECTS

Given his pedigree as a three-time Premier League winner, it’s expected that Evans will command a regular spot at centre-back for the Baggies. He will primarily be competing against James Chester, Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson for a place in the starting XI, with Joleon Lescott now out of the picture following his move to Aston Villa. Craig Dawson is expected to remain at right-back after he started the season as a centre-half.

The main reason why Evans may soon be on the radar of Fantasy managers is his kind price tag of 4.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His cost has fallen by 0.2 already this season, having failed to feature so far at Old Trafford, and with Dawson (5.0), McAuley (5.0) and Chester (4.9) all more expensive, looks a great route into the Baggies backline. Olsson is cheaper at 4.5, but while he has started the last three matches, it seems unlikely that the Swede will keep his place in Pulis’ XI. Chris Brunt, who has regularly lined up at left-back for the Baggies under Pulis, is listed as a midfielder in FPL.

Looking at last season’s statistics, Evans is only behind Chester for tackles (2.4 to 2.3) per match out of the four leading contenders, while he averaged 1.8 interceptions per game last term, the same number as McAuley, more than Olsson (1.1), but once again, less than Chester, who managed 2.3 per 90 minutes at Hull. Out of the four players, he ranked second for clearances with 5.1 per match, bettered only by McAuley with 6.1.

West Brom have managed to keep clean sheets in two of their last three matches, although their task was made easier on Saturday with Stoke being reduced to nine men early on at the Britannia. Whilst Pulis’ men have allowed 32 goal attempts from inside their own box this season – which is the eighth most in the top flight – you have to factor in clashes with City and Chelsea already, where they conceded six times.

Indeed, with 12 shut-outs registered in 22 matches under the Welshman so far, there’s no doubt the Baggies defensive assets are worth serious consideration for FPL bosses, particularly given their favourable upcoming fixtures (SOT, avl, EVE, cpl, SUN, nor).

Given that McAuley has started every league match when available for Pulis, he certainly looks a secure pick but if, as expected, Evans partners his fellow Irishman in the heart of the Baggies defence against Southampton next time out, his 0.2% ownership figure should steadily rise over the next few months.

i'm guessing that fplstatistics remembered his ownership for every day that he was "locked" and are just adjusting the threshold on a day by day basis until the magic day happens. fff haven't done that, so they may have problems with the other locked players.

    Thoughts on Hazard => Sterling?

I already have Silva and Aguero but City's fixtures are great, and Haz has been rubbish. I'm scared he's suddenly going to up his game as soon as I get rid of him though!

Very solid team. If you've got 1 FT I'd save it. If you've got 2 FTs then given the strength of your team I'd say the 0.4 ITB is more valuable than upgrading anyone, so do something sideways like Wanyama>Westwood and hang on to one.

    Fabianski (McCarthy)

    Sanchez Silva Mahrez Payet Ritchie
    Aguero Gomis (Diouf)

    2 FTs, 0.2 ITB.

Need to get rid of Ritchie. Considering Ritchie>Redmond, or Ritchie+Gomis>Ayew+Wilson (too much of a sideways move?), or Ritchie>Westwood/Sinclair/Morrison and upgrade Taylor to J.Evans/Dawson.

Three dilemmas really messing up my wildcard following closure of the transfer window:

    1. Who will West Brom's first choice keeper be?

    2. Who will Man Utd's first choice keeper be?

    3. How will KDB affect other City midfielders in terms of points?

It all seemed so easy once. Now these questions reverberate through my mind all night like something out of an early '90s horror film.

Thanks for advice sigh, that all sounds very sensible. Now thinking something like:

        Cech McCarthy

        Kolarov Dawson Shaw Francis Ward

        Sterling Pedro Ayew Mahrez Redmond

        Aguero Gomis Wilson

With 2.3m in the bank, could then get Sanchez or Haz in later by downgrading Redmond and upgrading Ayew if needed. Or sideways switch from Pedro / Sterling. Thoughts?

We didn't bring in a right back, so many Leicester fans (myself included) feel that we will revert back to 3-4-1-2, with Mahrez in the hole as he was at the end of last season, before too long. We played that system in pre-season and it was a surprise to go back to 4 at the back in the prem, as we have been so far. That would put Schlupp on left wing with Dyer or Albrighton vying for the right side, I think Albrighton will still get the majority of games. But CR loves a tinker, so who knows.

Tough to tell at this point as we dont even know where KDB will lineup but either way he should enhance City's goal output. I'm sure that each of the mids will have their respective hauls including Yaya but given that KDB is 10.0, you have to take Silva because he is already proven, established and consistent. KDB might be a better opt in the long run but not worth taking a chance because we don't know how he will fit in or how long it will take for him to adapt to a new system and new teammates.

Dyer moving makes Ayew an even stronger option now.

Monk has history for rotating those positions and a dip in form could of seen him dropped.

Thats now less of a worry.

I think KDB is only really an option for those like me that don't have Silva.

Play safe and get Silva or be different and go with KDB.... seems an unnecessary risk until a game has been watched at least

Son and N'Jie going to Tottenham should improve Kane's prospects so I am happy about that, as he is a definite hold with their next match being against Sunderland so hopefully he will repay my faith.

I like the West Ham signings, I think they can only improve the likelihood of Payet picking up points.

Leicester signing Dyer slightly concerns me as a Mahrez owner, not that it means he won't start but I think it means he will rarely get the full 90 mins which is a pain.

      My GKs are Myhill/McCarthy.

I figure I'd have to be pretty unlucky to have them both lose their place the same week. McCarthy is the GK Pardew bought and he has indicated he won't automatically be replaced by Speroni, in fact he thinks McCarthy is potentially a future England international.

Myhill is a solid GK and I also don't see Lindegaard automatically displacing him. According to the Birmingham Mail, Pulis initially wanted Lindegaard on a short-term deal (loan) to provide "competition for Boaz Myhill" while Foster is out (expected back November). United preferred a permanent FT. So I'd imagine Pulis will play Lindegaard against Norwich in the C1C in mid-September and take it from there.

I expected to have to use a FT on GKs in due course anyway. Just a matter of whether it is sooner or later. But I expect to keep McCarthy long term, it's then a matter which GK with him and whether I have a WBA defender instead of their GK.

Apart from that, I am feeling that I have "control" of my team for the first time this season. No immediate transfers needed, no-one I desperately want out or in, no-one dropping in price and a forward plan I'm happy with. All I need now is for my players to score some FPL points. And picking a (c) that actually scores a goal would be nice as well. 😕

Annoyingly though I have two frees and currently don't want to make any changes. I was going to do Ruddy to Myhill - but a question mark has been presented over Myhill so will hold on that.

I may do Diouf to Wilson just to use the transfer but that's not ideal. If there are no international injuries i may even just waste it and not use it at all- which will be the first time I've ever done that since they introduced the option to hold over a transfer.

I 'wasted' an FT with a late wildcard - players dropping, a WC movement swaying people on here, some other players looking fantastic options. Its worked out at 300k odd and a template side with decent TV.

My transfer last week was Sakho to Wilson or Diouf and chose former so it half worked out.

First sign of Leics rotation and Sako come in for many perhaps - he is a blessing for those who have the cheap 4th/5th like Marhez and Westwood etc. Having already done Depay to Pedro this week I'm gambling a bit on several factors...

Yes, it is an odd situation in a way but I'm exactly the same.

I have Diouf too and am intent on keeping him. He's a low ownership player (5%) with good form and great fixtures over the next 6-7 weeks. I'm hoping he'll be one of the players that will help me climb up the rankings.

Couldn't agree more about the control aspect. I WC'd after game week 2 and only Wilson has caught my eye and I already have him in. Other than that, as you say, it feels a lot more settled and controllable.

Have managed to get to 300k overall, and am over the moon with that after the start I had!

Conversely, I set up a FPL team for my 11 year old, and he is currently 48k in the world with 210 points! He picked most of the team himself, and has done very well, despite starting with Debuchy and Mert last week! Kids. *sigh*

Yeah, the first 4 GWs was like canoeing through rapids. I have come out at 600k but that doesn't trouble me too much, last season I was around 1.2m at this stage and with a squad that was still a mess. And the gap to 100k is 20 points or something, not huge.

Main thing is I feel my team is through the rapids and into calmer water and that my canoe is riding well and feels balanced. As long as I don't get significant trouble with international injuries it feels like it should be a smoother progression from here.

Hmmm im thinking of keeping a FT this GW, but getting a WBA defender is just too tempting since my useless punt with Clark didnt work at all last GW.

10? Really? A bit risky imo then, Silva being the same price and playing in the middle. I'd wait to see if he's on set pieces. He should be imo, and if he is, then he just could be worth it.

    3. Doolittle
      • 11 Years

Would want to wait to see first, even though he's clearly a very talented player he's not really proven in this league, ditching Silva would be very risky. Plus, if Pellegrini said he can't change the defence due to form, he may struggle to drop Navas who has been good so far this season.

      1. Camp No No
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

It really remains to be seen if they can afford dropping Navas. His workrate is amazing and he's the only AM they have who tracks back. Think of Sterling-Silva-KDB together, Yaya behind them and Kun upfront, that smells like a goal galore, in both ends.

        1. Doolittle
          • 11 Years

I actually wonder whether this is a wise signing. Very good player, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea, and City have looked far better this season with 2 wingers and Silva in the middle, allowing them to stretch teams. De Bruyne will likely drift into the middle, and it may all become to compact and 1 dimensional as it was last season. I don't think I'd mess with the team right now.

            • 10 Years

Thinking the same. To my mind, both Sterling and KDB are awesome players, but not necessarily what City needed. They need attacking players who can contribute in defence as well. Now they're basically dropping or selling everybody who could fit that bill and replace them with new guys for whom defending is something the opponent does.

    Ruddy
    Azpi - Cedric - Huth
    Silva - Mane - Ritchie - Mahrez - Payet
    Aguero - Benteke

    Subs: Butland, Mert, Diouf, Francis

When should I look to WC? Watching De Bruyne for first couple weeks and maybe do Cedric to Van Dijk. Not happy with Benteke either although his fixtures may improve.

Best option for this team? Would it be to just save FT and line it up as I have it for now? Obviously want rid of Coates but probably not essential this week if I'm happy playing Cedric?

    Ruddy - (Rudd)

    Cedric - Kolarov - Huth - (Richards) - (Coates)

    Hazard - Ozil - Yaya - Mahrez - (Sinclair)

    Aguero - Pelle - Wilson

And this is why I have no doubts De Gea will be back to number one sooner rather than later:

Vicente del Bosque: "De Gea needs to be professional and move on from this episode. I hope that he starts playing again and is happy."

"If he plays well we can bring him along, otherwise if he doesn't play it will be very difficult for him to come to the Euros."

it doesn't matter, might be true , might not be...either way its glaringly obvious what he needs and every transfer window its the same. The market might be crazy but you need to pay over the odds for the world class players and Wenger isnt prepared to do that. he got Sanchez and Ozil because he knew their standings at their clubs werent the best. If he offered 60m for cavani he probably would have got him and a player like that wins you titles.

        1. The Machine
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

He paid waay over the odds for ozil and spent a decent amout on sanchez too. But for him to get a player, that player has to be available too.

For him to pay enough to firce a club into selling a player who isnt even available isnot the way for arsenal. They may have the money but do they have the continous resources like city or chelsea to risk 60m on a player? With the other two it shouldnnot be an issue theyll go and get another one if he fails...

          • 10 Years

Of course, but who was available for a transfer really? ManU ended up paying €60M (+€20M if he ends up being really fecking good) for a striker who has really done on top level only this year (counting from last winter). Real Madrid (Benzy), Bayern Munchen (Lewa), Barcelona (Neymar) and PSG (Cavani) are not seller clubs. They know they need their top players to keep up their business. Who was there outside such teams? Lacazette from Lyon? Okay, fair enough, but again, they value the potential CL success and renewing the CL place in the league in money as well. Maybe throwing a €100M at Lyon would have got Arsenal Lacazette, and maybe it would have been worth it. Maybe. But this is, anyway, the market we're talking about. Not just the prices, also the low numbers of players on market.

Plus the fecking defensive work that he does. Blanc has repeatedly stated how he loves Cavani for the work he does and what he can't get from other forwards, Zlatan least of all. Zlatan knows this as well, he says it in his biography that his physic just doesn't let him run back to defence every time.

Still dont feel like it would translate into PL, as 1 goal ~2 games is rare and hard to sustain. Even if he drops to 1 goal every 3 games, thats no better than Giroud who will get his 12-14 goals.

And you know Arsene wont overspend for someone who is on the downside of their career, what is he 28-29 now?

Running a football business rests upon factoring in the value of winning / placing as high as possible in the league / CL / subsequent sponsor revenue

At its most simplistic level I'd say 25m for RVP was a small price to pay for making the difference between 3rd and 1st

(Assuming of course that the club has the business plan / ambition to finish 1st)

Not specifically about Cavani, but I am absolutely astonished that they are the only club in the top 5 European leagues that hasn't signed a single outfield player. If there was one club that I'd say needed to sign players, along with Man Utd, to achieve their target, it is Arsenal.

Gary Neville was spot on, it's either arrogance or naivety. He has his principles, but there is absolutely no way Wenger will win the league with that squad, let alone the CL. There are such obvious flaws, and they're the same year in year out.

I would put big money on them not winning the league with this squad. An injury to Coquelin and they're screwed, no fire power up front if Sanchez isn't firing, and the midfield is too light to compete over 38 games. They'll have a good run as they always do, but they just aren't good enough. They desperately need a DM and a striker.

The midfield really cannot be too light, but you're right that they should have a plan B for DM. If Coquelin gets injured, and if he starts every match from here to January, he'll be injured by then, they'll be screwed. Other than that, it sure is a team that has decent chances to win the title.

I think people are jusging them way too much in the first 4 games games. Like chelsea, i reckon they will improve after the break.

Arteta may not be good enough to compete in matches against city or chelsea but he is an okay back up for every other team. I cant think of any club with two top quality dmfs in the premier league

Okay, Arteta can do it once a while, but what if Wenger refuses to rest Coquelin before he gets injured and he's out for 2 months in Spring when the most important games are played?

And while maybe top top DM's are a bit scarce, I'd say that at least ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea, ManC and Crystal Palace have better _backup_ DM than Arsenal.

By the way, I don't mean to say Arteta is crap. A couple of years ago he was one of the best players in that position, but I think he may have just aged a bit faster than some (say, Pirlo, Schweinie).

              This.

As Gary Neville said on MNF last week. Cazorla/Coquelin is the best pivot pairing they can field, and that's a 'good' pairing, but it won't win you the title. When Henry questioned him on that he said "I think McCarthy and Barry are a good pair, but they won't win you the league".

Not when in comparison they're up against YYT/Fernandinho or Matic/Fabregas.

              I think it's a mixture of stubbornness & stupidity.

That just shows that Neville's a bit clueless. Sure McCarthy and Barry are a good pair who won't win a league. But to say that _similarly_ Coquelin and Cazorla are a good pair that won't win a league, is ludicrous. Obviously they're way better than Barry and McCarthy. That's an awesome pair, one of the best in the league. The problem is just that if this first pair gets injured, then they're fecked up.

The point isn't to compare the two sets against each other!

It's to show that whilst it's the 'best pair' they can field, it still isn't good enough, which is why they needed to upgrade. That's the point.

Thoughts on this sad bunch? I triggered the WC, and I'm in immense regret! Coates"dropping" and Pedro "rising" pushed me :/

        Krul // McCarthy
        Koscielny // Naughton // Kolarov // Ward // Francis
        Sanchez // Sterling // Pedro // Mahrez // Westwood
        Aguero // Gomis // Wilson

        Thoughts:
        1. Best 4.5m defenders? Liking the look of Ward/Soure for the long term - should the other be someone from Watford? I should be checking rotations...
        2. Pedro+Sanchez+Gomis VS Ayew+Ramsey+Costa?

Best 4.5 mil defender is Francis or Ward

And as for 2. I would mix it up with Pedro,Ayew and Gomis

Couple of Norwich fans on at the moment so wanted to ask your thoughts on Hoolahan. Is his time going to be impacted on with the new signings?
