The Community Round Up

It’s been four Gameweeks to forget for many Fantasy managers, who have been left shell shocked by failed captaincy choices and reliable home wins drying up. There was plenty of advice on beating the start of the season blues from our community writers and hot topic posters during this international break, with differentials, deadline day recruits and alternative formations all in the frame to turn around our seasons. We also delve into some creative underlying statistics in our Members tables as well as catch up on the latest news from some of our Community tournaments.

The Community Articles

One key tactic to turning around what has been a lacklustre Fantasy campaign for many is to take risks with the captaincy. Jose’s Magic Omelette’s regular alternative captaincy options articles are a good way to assess such punts. His latest piece takes a look ahead to some of Gameweek 5’s armband mavericks and glances back to see how his differentials fared in Gameweek 4.

Another regular community article that offers a different way of selecting captains is Your Mum’s Athletic’s What the Bookies Say series, which uses bookmakers odds to help predict the coming Gameweek’s scorelines. As this recap on his Gameweek 4 predictions shows, the high number of red cards handed out made this a particular difficult set of fixtures to assess.

The international break offers a chance for the community to reflect on their squads and captaincy strategy in great detail. Bowstring the Carp was on hand to look back on what we can learn from August’s fixtures. Meanwhile, Jose’s Magic Omelette was back again to show how the international break can also present a good profit making opportunity, especially for those wildcarding.

With form so far trumping fixtures, Pooodle offers some sound advice on the best times to either stick or twist regarding underperforming stars.

Finally, if you have a spare few minutes please do take some time to cast your vote for your favourite community article during August. The winning writer will receive a £20 Amazon voucher and will be announced in next week’s Community Round Up.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

There were further tips on turning around the fortunes of Fantasy managers in our hot topics. Those answering our plea for help included Baines on Toast, who urges patience with misfiring heavy hitters such as Alexis Sanchez, while Ryan recommends going five at the back, given the large amount of high scoring defenders this season. As Bowstring the Carp’s latest round up of FPL bonus allocation shows, full backs, in particular, look very attractive as a source of reliable points.

Another set of player that could help the community march up the rankings are those who joined new clubs at the end of the summer transfer window. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne was among those mentioned in our discussion on how the summer arrivals and those with new clubs may impact on our teams.

There is certainly an appetite for trying something different to achieve Fantasy success, with Weasel Boy amongst those who has had enough of heavy hitters – he even went as far as to say that Sergio Aguero is killing his Fantasy team. He is not alone, with the Manchester City striker also features in Belsunz’s hot topic on the most disappointing players so far list, which also includes Chelsea’s lacklustre defence.

Could our reliance on cheap defenders and players such as Aguero be costing our community vital Fantasy points? Ruth NZ certainly thinks so in his discussion on the how this tried and test rigid team structure is failing so spectacularly this season.

For those who have had a poor start, our latest Rough with the Smooth article will offer some comfort, as it shows that even the number one manager in our Hall of Fame has had a shocker. Despite being another to have a poor start, I find myself in the rare position of not wanting to use either of my two free transfers ahead of Gameweek 5. Our subsequent discussion on the issue revealed that wasting a transfer may even offer a significant, surprise boost in rankings.

In FPL’s sister game Ultimate Fantasy Premier League the transfer window remains open until September 12. To help make the right decisions on who to draft in Andy85wsm offered an invaluable list of those teams playing on Matchday 2 and 3, offering a crucial group of players that increase managers’ chances of correcting first match day blunders.

For those wanting to catch up on how their players are performing while away on international duty Demi has provided this round up of their travels ahead of Gameweek 5.

The Members Tables

Mark has created this handy table looking at the most creative teams each Gameweek. The team topping Gameweek 4’s table will come as some surprise given the scoreline. My goals imminent table has now been updated to show the players that are due a goal or two. This will offer some crumb of comfort to those keeping faith in their heavy hitters. While Jaffalicious has produced a pair of team tables, looking a the best attacks and defences.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The results of qualifying round 2 of Jaffalicious’s FFS UEFA Champions League themed tournament are now in, with Lucy, Dogba, Irish Madrista and Rodellegabomb among those to progress.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing the safety score was 29, which saw 165 players depart and 2,427 remain.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

OK but don't bench Wilson. Bench one of the Swans. Watford defence is stronger than Norwich's & Swans are much more than one man army compared to Bournemouth atm.

You predicting another good game for Wilson? I'm making him captain, it worked last week and I tend to stick with a captain if it's working out for me

Wouldn't give him the armband over Kun & Sanchez but he is a good pick this GW & has the form & fixture on his side to produce more returns.

Can i get a quick RMT?

    Krul / McCarthy
    Kolarov / Cedric / Francis / Prodl / Muneisa
    Hazard / YYT / Ayew / Mane / Shaqiri
    Aguero / Vardy / Wilson

I will be rotating SWA , Ayew , Mane , Shaq , Vardy , Wilson on form primarily and secondarily on fixtures...
I will be benching these fixtures only if I can decide on the basis of form.....
    ars , MUN , ARS , che , mci, liv , ARS , CHE

The other 4 fixtures are ALWAYS outside the top 4

Would you consider downgrading Shaq so you can upgrade to Diouf? I like Shaqiri as a player but there are a lot of guys providing service for Stoke and only one guy finishing.

Affelay and Adam both have to serve suspensions and Shaqiri likes to score more than assist.....plus I feel Vardy will be a top-drawer differential to Mahrez

I think Diouf, Sakho, or Gomis are better options than Vardy, even with a rotation strategy.
Playing Kolarov, Cedric and one other tho, that is very solid imo

Puyol pants up, if you are out there

I'm currently playing Football Manager 2014 and in the year 2022 with Crew in the premier league. Martial has just become the golden boot winner with 28 goals for Chelsea. I guess even the football games thinks he's set for bigger things.

He probably is set for big things in the future. But If I was United I still would of gone for Cavani/Bacca/Mandzukic/Llorente/Lacazette/Kane(?)/Griezmann

I'm sure they could of afforded one of them, I would rather splash the cash on a proven goal scorer rather then a young player with no "amazing" goal scoring record to back it up. Kind of like what Man City did with Bony.

Obviously De Gea could be an issue. Love Sako and am torn between him an Bolasie myself.

And on the Palace theme, I will be punting on Wickham after this G/W. The whole team look awesome this season and Citeh will get a test this week.

I think if Oscar was to return in the hole next G/W (knock) Pedro could be a more desirable (c) pick.

Kun__Apart from the Chels game (any number of chances) clued up defenders have kept him choked allowing the m/f more space to shoot Silva / Sterling. Your choice I think.

Azpi worries me after being hauled off and their defense ill be a worry for a while I reckon. What changes will he make?

Get some Palace in there. they're playing too well to ignore. Good team, I hope Redmond and Mahrez keep doing it for you but have my doubts tbh.

I watched him last year at Zenit and thought Highley of him, he suites the West Brom playing style really well and provides most of the goals for them especially with Berahino refusing to play, reasonably cheap as well at 7.0

    Morning DZ!
Find myself in the position of somehow having watched very little West Brom so far this season. Need to replace Mings (looks away embarrassedly) and think I'd like some West Brom in my defense.

Pick one for me and make a case.
I think I have the money to fit any of them into my squad.

Some, but have kind of been watching more of the teams that I had more questions about. And with them, I just have Alexis and wasn't looking to bring in anything else right now. What are you wondering?

I'm wondering why Sanchez is having so many of his shots blocked (see the link in my profile for details). Are opposition defenders doubling up on him, or is he making poor shooting decisions, or a combination of the two, or something else?

                Interesting observation.

I think it's a combination of getting doubled up on to a greater degree than most, and also, he hasn't quite seemed as quick on the trigger as he was at his peak last year. Don't know if some of that is just down to the busy summer schedule he had and that it should pick up?? But even then it would only get him back to a spot where he was last year which was still getting blocked more often than the average player.

                Hmmm.

Solid. A minor Payet downgrade could free up some funds to help with replacing Targett or Pelle next week, but with three nice fixtures in the next four you might not want to shift him either. That leaves Darmian to, say, a WBA defender perhaps? Not sure it's worth it though.

Not a bad shout but Payet at home to Newcastle is too good to pass up honestly. May just go for a straight swap of Darmian to Bellerin or maybe a WBA defender. Who knows, still have a week to decide.

It's a touch worrying that Payet hasn't recorded a single attacking return in the last two weeks while his team mates have notched six goals, but you can't really say no to NEW, NOR and sun in three of the next four.

I think he's been a bit unlucky as many of his corners and overall play have led to many chances...and opponents red cards! I think he will be a good fantasy asset throughout the year. Also has a solid and very accurate shot. Should bang home some goals from open play and free kicks!

Your probably right and once Andy Carroll is back those corners may be regularly redirected into the net. I liked what I saw of Payet in Gameweek 1, but I haven't seen much of West Ham since. The last two results have just made me wonder if he could be an assisting the assist type player - I have no evidence for that though.

Some might call it sideways but I think it would be a bit of an improvement to go from Toure to Sterling. I think that with addition of KDB to the mix, there will be less room for Yaya to rampage forward but that defenses will get stretched out even more. Basically, I think there is more upside to Sterling than to Yaya at this point in the season

Sterling looked more dangerous when he moved into the middle after Navas went off vs Watford. If KDB has the same effect on taking him off the wing then it would be good for him.

I can see KDB being a points machine, shame he didn't come in at 9.5.

Yeah, but I don't think he was ever going to come in cheap. Every "name player" who comes in seems like they are priced 0.5 higher than people thought they would. Avoiding stampede purchases, they are.

Good read Diva! From what I see Sanchez just loves to shoot. He doesn't seem to care how many bodies are in front of him when other players may try to dribble or pass.. This can be very frustrating but I think "selfish" players are fantasy gold. Many of these shots can become deflected goals that the goalie has no chance on. I agree that defense is doubling up when they can and paying close attention to him. He seems to have a tough time when everyone's not D is back and they try there patent arsenal intricate passing. He just wants to shoot from a good spot whether there's. Oldies in from or not! These will start going in and he will defiantly be getting some fast break and open play goals without a doubt. Although I don't currently own him, I know he'll be in my side before long!

Both of my GKs have difficult games for the next Gameweek, who should I start ?

    Butland (ars)
    McCarthy (MCI)

In DF, I have to start one of these three and tempted to play Ward as he might nick another goal against the big teams.

    Targett (wba)
    Ward (MCI)
    Richards (lei)

Same GKs as mine, I have Butland to start, as an away team to Arsenal, I think they will try to focus more on how to defend, therefore, I suspect Butland might get some save/bonus points.

Thanks. It does make sense to play Butland over McCarthy, I feel.

We can expect lots of attempt from Arsenal as usual and a busy night for Butland to save.

Palace might keep their attacking attitude of play and make the game open for conceding.

Good case for me to start Ward too. Hahaha

Diva, I just read your blog. Excellent insight. I've also been excited by Sanchez' stats and disappointed with his results and agree with you. Both are misleading to some extent. His ratio of shots to goals won't be the best but he makes up for it in sheer volume.

I'm sure he will come good but will never be as clinical as Aguero.

Another player whose stats can frustrate in relation to end product is Pelle. Have you seen his stats this season? Ridiculous number of shots in box and even a lot of chances created for a forward.

I am considering buying him even knowing he misses a lot.
