Scout Notes – Gameweek 34 – Wednesday

Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho are amongst the goals as Liverpool put four past Everton in a one-sided derby at Anfield. Andy Carroll nets again as West Ham sweep aside Watford at Upton Park, whilst Matteo Darmian bags a goal and assist in United’s home win over Palace.

Reds run riot

Jurgen Klopp welcomed back his starters for the Merseyside derby but opted to field Divock Origi ahead of Daniel Sturridge at the lone-striker berth. The former opened the scoring (his third goal in three) at the 43-minute mark but would later leave the pitch on a stretcher with an ankle injury. Post-match, Klopp conceded that the Belgium international has twisted his ankle and is set to undergo scans to assess any further damage.

Sturridge replaced Origi and found himself on the scoresheet seven minutes later, notching his fourth goal in five appearances. Should Origi face a stint on the sidelines, the England international could be in the driving seat to lead the line over the run-in, though with the Europa League clashes against Villarreal also to factor in, Klopp could also utilise Roberto Firmino as a false nine as he continues to manage Sturridge’s minutes.

Philippe Coutinho netted his third goal in as many starts, whilst James Milner also kept his tally ticking over with his second brace of assists in three outings. With the weekend home match against Newcastle taking place five days before the first leg against Villarreal, though, there’d be no surprise if Klopp made several alterations to his team sheet, as evidenced by his first XI at Bournemouth on Sunday.

Rounding off Liverpool’s Fantasy output, Mamadou Sakho bagged his first league goal of the season to deliver a 15-point double Gameweek 34 haul, while Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen grabbed assists.

Funes Mori dismissed for sorry Toffees

Everton endured a torrid evening at Anfield, mustering just three attempts and zero shots on target as they stretched out their winless run to seven matches.

To compound matters, Ramiro Funes Mori received a straight red in the 50th minute for a reckless challenge on Origi, ruling him out of the Toffees’ FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United and their next two league encounters (BOU, lei). With Seamus Coleman and Phil Jagielka both injured, Roberto Martinez’ men look decimated in defence right now.

An exodus is on the cards for Romelu Lukaku owners following the Belgian’s fifth consecutive blank. Lukaku managed a pitiful six attempts in his previous four starts and is fronting an attack that’s netted only two goals in six fixtures, underlining the magnitude of Everton’s current malaise. Ally this with the Toffees’ poor defensive form (one clean sheet in nine) and it’s difficult to justify investment prior to their double Gameweek 37 (lei & sun).

Carroll notches another in Hammers win

West Ham United extended their unbeaten streak to nine matches with a 3-1 home win over Watford.

Courtesy of two goals from the penalty spot, Mark Noble posted his highest score (16 points) of the campaign. Andy Carroll spearheaded the Irons’ attack and went on to notch for the third successive league match. The Hammers striker now boasts six goals in five outings, placing him on many managers’ shopping lists ahead of West Ham’s double Gameweek 37 (SWA, MUN). Considering that Diafra Sakho had to settle for a wing role on his return to action, Carroll looks set to retain his starting berth beyond a blank next Gameweek.

Dimitri Payet, Cheikhou Kouyate and Michail Antonio grabbed the assists. The former somewhat fell short of expectations with a six-point haul over the double, while the latter continues to deliver attacking returns (two assists in three) despite being deployed at right-back.

Prodl bags Hornets’ consolation

In the wake of defeat at the Boleyn Ground, Watford lay claim to just one victory in their last eight outings.

In an obvious ploy to preserve the fitness of his first-teamers before the Hornets’ FA Cup semi-final this Sunday, Quique Sanchez Flores named seven changes for their trip to Upton Park. The likes of Odion Ighalo was afforded a rest, whilst Troy Deeney was named amongst the subs only to emerge from the bench and miss a spot-kick.

Handed a third start in four, Sebastian Prodl (Steven Berghuis assist) starved the hosts of a clean sheet with his maiden goal of the campaign.

Darmian the unlikely United hero

Manchester United renewed their hunt for a top-four berth with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Matteo Darmian delighted 13,000 managers that drafted him in prior to Gameweek 34, notching a goal and assist as part of a 17-point showing. The Italian full-back profited from the Red Devils’ fourth clean sheet in five outings, yet the absence of Marcos Rojo and Timothy Fosu-Mensah reaffirmed the fact that David Gea and Chris Smalling represent the only safe routes into their defence. In saying that, it’s worth noting that Antonio Valencia also benefitted over the pair of fixtures, with a goal and two clean sheets earning him 20 points – only Sergio Aguero (26 points) has bettered that score amongst outfield players in the Gameweek ahead of tonight’s final fixture at the Emirates.

Anthony Martial was re-inserted into the starting XI as Louis van Gaal also found room for Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford in a 4-3-3 set-up. Ultimately, Martial – who’s now scored a solitary goal in seven appearances – proved to be a misstep for over 200,000 managers that backed him to capitalise on Man United’s favourable pair of home match-ups.

Would really appreciate some thoughts here guys!

What, in your opinion, is the most pressing issue with my team for GW35 and beyond?

    Robles, Hennessey
    Monreal, Toby, Moreno, Simpson, Fosu-Mensah
    Ozil, Sanchez, Payet, Firmino, Milner
    Aguero, Carroll, Vardy

    1,2 ITB, 1 FT

I'm concerned about Fosu-Mensah's gametime, Milner and Moreno rotation risk, goalie for GW35 and obviously Vardy has to go.

    A) Vardy, Milner > Sturridge, King/other. -4 and 0.8 (if King) ITB
    B) Vardy > Pelle/Defoe/Mitrovic. 0.6/3.5/2.4 ITB
    C) Aguero, Milner, Vardy > Kane, Sturridge, Alli/Wijnaldum/Sissoko. -8 and 1.9/1.4/2.5 ITB
    D) Other

I'm very open for suggestions and don't mind some out-of-the box thinking here.

Hi guys, please help. Below is my team for GW35

    Darlow
    Bellerin Simpson Sakho
    Mahrez Coutinho Sanchez Iwobi
    Kane Aguero

Robles, Delaney, Smalling, Payet, Lukaku 0itb, 1FT

So I currently can field 10 players for gw35, ideally I want a Spurs defender (for Delaney), but that would mean taking a hit. Also I’m not sure who to get rid of to free the cash? Any suggestions? I thought about getting rid of Coutinho (rotation risk) and Delaney for Alli and Dier? But I’m also kind of sick of Lukaku lol, but I dont know who to get.

So what does the Origi injury mean for Sturridge?

Am I right in saying Liverpool have no other fit strikers?

Is Sturridge now nailed or could someone like Coutinho play false 9?

Lots of people dropping Couthino... I think it is a bad idea.. heres why..

With Origi out the top spot will be shared between Firmino & Sturridge... Firmino was in the 10 Couts one side Lala the other... Now Frims will be moved up top the 10 is free, Couts got a rest in his last game and imo is Liverpools best No10.. He will play imo EL & Newcastle in the 10..
Not only that he looks hungry for goals watched him berating players last nite for not returning passes that could lead to shots he had 1 thing on his mind last night... Goals!!!!
So in summary he will play v Newcastle and he probably will do well too..

Dont say ye were not warned

Firm up top, Ojo / Ibe will come in

Coutinho was rubbish (from fpl perspective) apart from the goal last night - super deep and just doesn't have the instinct to go into the box - he will still do a million shots from outside box but it's a lottery then

I've got Alli in for a hit for him already

Dont agree at all, came very close to a bap so dont know where the terrible fpl prospect is coming from. Of course if you done -4 your going to say this...

you do have a point...in Klopp's previous massive rotated games, the only 2 spots were he seemed to want experienced, quality players was Striker + #10.

      Definitely food for thought.

This DGW contiuing the tradition of players scoring hugely in one game and people catching it because of the double.

Very few would've captained Kun for the Chelsea game, or considered the huge scoring DFs like Sakho and Darmian were it not for the double - yet their points all hugely skewed towards one match.

Yet when looking at TC options and so on, our focus was often on players who have delivered returns in two consecutive games. Is that the wrong approach, and should we instead just focus on the players we think have the explosive capability in any one game?

think the key to the DGWK is that you have two shots at a good score, so if one doesn't work out, whatever the opposition, you get another crack at it. In this case that was invaluable as often our dgwk players didn't even play twice.

Fair point - someone like Townsend always had that potential and it gave him two chances to do it.

The beauty with DGWs is that, more often than not, the law of averages comes into play. That's why DGWs usually work out fine.

I agree the DGW players work out in the end, if you look at all the top scores from this round with the exception of ali they're all DGW players! So it's worth taking taking the risk, sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesn't & that is why we all pay this game!

What lessons have you learnt from this WC / DGW / BB / TC rollercoaster?

Mine is not to take too many points hits and to keep players in form such as Alli and Toby, also go with your heart rather than FFS community - was thinking either Sturridge, Carroll or Martial for Lukaku and guess which one I went for

My -12 from GW33 to GW 34 (post WC GW33!) was Darmian, Bolasie and Luk to TFM, Nasri and Martial, a -32 point swing - I would have got 148 but ended up with 116 points!

GW34 Triple Captain vs Bench Boost - which one wins?

      1. Blame It On Rio-ddermorten
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

I'd say bench boost. Even though I captained Sanchez (and I'm still hoping for a fantastic score from him), a tc on Aguero gives you 26 extra points, but a lot of the teams I've seen have more than that on the bench. I have 30, and that's with two sgw'ers benched.

Bench Boost with a strong bench and Aguero as a normal captain probably wins. A hat-trick for Sanchez tonight would make Bench Boost with a strong bench and Sanchez as a normal captain equally good.

Before last night's matches, however, Triple Captain Aguero appeared to be winning.

My own Bench Boost was looking really wasted until Milner, Coutinho and Adrian all scored well last night and Lukaku kept Kane on the bench.

The Liverpool team could see massive rotation again, so while they could do well (as they did in DGW34 despite only playing one match each), there is also a big risk of them being rested.

I think really the question is have the chips helped the more "pro" players (aka. the players who spend hours a week sorting their team)? Or is it more a case they have actually helped the more "casual" players. Maybe FPL's plan behind introducing the chips has actually worked - it's mixed things up a bit.

Is there any point in keeping Lukaku? I know he has DG37 but Everton look so bad recently.

Also is there any point in getting rid of Coutinho for Firmino? Firminio seems more nailed, can play false 9, more attacking?

Who is the best option for the third striker behind Aguero and Kane? Defoe? Sturridge?

Do you think the chips have been an exciting addition to the game, or have they detracted from it?

For me, I think they have been an excellent addition. In my mini-league, the top four are currently separated by just 28 points, and the end to the season will be amazing, because we've all got different chips left:

      #1 - 2003 points - no chips left
      #2 - 2000 points - BB left
      #3 (me) - 1989 points - TC left
      #4 - 1975 points - BB and TC left

While none of the chips are worth that many points in the grand scheme of things, their addition has certainly added something to the game in my opinion. The last four weeks of the season are certainly going to be very exciting in my mini-league, and that is partly because of the chips, so I think they've been a success.

Seems that those who had the TC on Kun won this GW with flying colors.
And BB was not a good idea at the end, with all the rotation that was going on.
Those who kept faith in Kane/Alli was the happy ones.

With only TC left, when and on whom can it be played? Should it explicitly be a DGWer?

Any player can be a rotation risk from now on. CL/Europa/FaCup distraction were to be blame but going forward, who can we really trust? ARS/TOT seem to be the only teams worth looking at. Or should we capitalise on the coming DGW?

I disagree. My bench got me 30 points compared to the 26 Aguero tc could have gotten me, and my bench is part of the plan for gw35, where I only need to use my FT to field 11.

There was no certainty that putting the TC on Kun would turn out to be as profitable as it did - if it had been then more of us would have captained Kun rather than the other popular choice, Sanchez.

Some of us finished up with more points on the bench than they would have got by putting the TC on Kun, and others didn't. And DGW37 is also likely to see plenty of rotation and therefore be no better than DGW34 for playing BB.

Playing BB was not a bad idea, and neither was putting the TC on Kun or Sanchez.

GW 37... Leicester have Everton at home and Spurs have Saints at home...how many players from those two teams (LEI and TOT) will you have for GW37. Those two fixtures looks good both for CS and attacking points. I think i'm going with 4-5 players from LEI and TOT. Don't want to make same mistakes and fill my teams with players from teams with high rotation risk and nothing to play for in the league. Sunderland and West Ham looks to be he teams to get DGW players from, maybe Studge or Firm if Origi is out.

      Two questions regarding rotation:

-will Klopp rest his wednesday starters on saturday? (if yes, I'm left with no keeper, as I got Robles). are Coutinho owners selling him?

Lots of similar questions about where to go next and my question would be the same.

There are two template teams out there now:

Those who didn't WC/BB and stuck with Alli, Kane, Vardy, TobyA etc
and those who did WC/BB and now have crops of West Ham, Liverpool, Everton.

How do we break those templates to catch the mini league leaders? What players can make the difference as real differentials, including how to maximise them in next DGW?

I'm thinking the likes of PvA, Defoe, Townsend maybe? Who else?

    PLEASE HELP ME!

A while back somebody supplied me with a file or a link to an Excel file which detailed all of the FPL player scores for the season. Does anybody have this file, or know where I can find it?

    Thanks in advance.

England will play with one striker (Kane). Vardy and Welbeck are ahead of Sturridge for me, and then for the 4th striker I'd prefer Carroll to offer something different

Ahead of Sturridge who's scoring goals? Can't see it. Of course the player who should drop out is Rooney, however if Roy dropped him, the nation would not be happy, similar to when Hoddle dropped Gazza from the 98 WC squad.

chasing or leading? Pelle could be worth a punt if chasing and has decent form (though apparently last game he was kak) and good fixture (villa are rubbish at home)

Not sure if Defoe for a hit is playing the percentages.

    Potential Outs:

    a)Lukaku + Martial -> Kane + Defoe
