Scout Notes – International Round-Up

An injury scare for Hazard, a Depay double and another goal for Bolasie top Sunday’s international bill. Here’s the round-up of the action in Europe and Africa.

Belgium 8 Estonia 1

With apologies to any Estonians, but as they say in that great country: ‘Väravate vahe on üle hinnatud.’

At least that’s what Google translate came up with for ‘goal difference is over-rated’, although a scintillating Belgium were anything but as they finished their 2016 fixtures with a swagger.

Romelu Lukaku (9.8) hit a late double and provided an assist, Eden Hazard (10.1) scored for the sixth time in as many matches for club and country and Kevin De Bruyne (10.8) set up one goal and was influential throughout as Estonia were blown away.

The events were undoubtedly overshadowed by news of Eden Hazard’s withdrawal with a knock.

Signaling to the bench on 73 minutes, Hazard clearly had an issue and was subsequently removed by Roberto Martinez.

Early reports suggested a knee injury, only for Martinez to allay fears post-match by stating it was “just a knock on the calf”.

However, this morning we’re seeing conflicting quotes in sources stating it was in fact a kick to the ankle that prompted Hazard’s withdrawal.

“He received a blow to the ankle, but he is not hurt.”

Confusion reigns, with Chelsea undoubtedly keen to get the player back under the wing and assess him ahead of the Gameweek 12 meeting with Middlesbrough.

Hazard has been the top transfer target ahead of Saturday’s deadline, finding his way into 229,000 new FPL squads and climbing to 28.3% ownership. The transfer traffic will doubtless slow while we await his return and Antonio Conte’s news on both Hazard and Diego Costa but, given Martinez’ reaction, we can be hopeful that Hazard will remain in contention.

Elsewhere, Hazard’s team-mate Thibaut Courtois (5.5) returned in goal for Belgium following his own scare concerning an eye injury and Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen (5.7) also started.

Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas (6.2) replaced Hazard after 73 minutes and Simon Mignolet (4.8), Christian Benteke (7.6), Steven Defour (6.0), Divock Origi (6.5) and Michy Batshuayi (8.6) were unused substitutes.

Neither Marouane Fellaini (5.8), Vincent Kompany (5.9), who pulled out of last Wednesday’s friendly with Holland, nor his replacement, Christian Kabasele (4.8), made even the bench – something Ragnar Klavan (4.7) would have probably settled for after enduring a torrid time at the heart of the Estonian defence.

The Liverpool man capped an ugly evening by scoring an own goal.

Luxembourg 1 Holland 3

Holland threatened to plumb new depths when they went in at half-time 1-1 with lowly Luxembourg.

But a double from substitute Memphis Depay (7.2) saved the day, and possibly reminded Jose Mourinho – and perhaps Ronald Koeman – of his goal scoring prowess.

In a season of high-scoring midfielders, The Red Devils middlemen have managed just five league goals between them, so Depay’s strikes – his first in nine appearances for club and country this campaign – won’t have harmed his previously limited prospects. And they don’t come much more limited than a mere 24 minutes from 11 Gameweeks.

Team-mate Daley Blind (5.8) crossed for Depay’s first. His second came from a free kick. Georginio Wijnaldum (7.5) had earlier set up Holland’s opener.

Maarten Stekelenburg (5.1) and Virgil Van Dijk (5.4) both started, while Middlesbrough’s Marten de Roon (4.3) came on for the last two minutes.

Michel Vorm (4.9), Leroy Fer, (5.1) Jordy Clasie (4.7) and Bruno Martins Indi (4.9) were all unused subs. Vincent Janssen (7.7) was not even in the squad after suffering concussion in the draw with Belgium last week and remains a doubt for Tottenham’s home match with West Ham on Saturday.

Things were generally less fraught across Europe on Sunday, although Bosnia And Herzegovina keeper Asmir Begovic (4.8) was beaten by a late, late goal in Greece to conclude a second half in which eight yellow and two red cards were brandished.

That match ended 1-1, while Switzerland beat Faroe Islands 2-0. Granit Xhaka (5.2) earned his 50th Swiss cap and Valon Behrami (4.5) also played the full 90 minutes and provided the assist for the opener. Edimilson Fernandes (4.9) made his debut in a 21-minute run-out after the break.

Southampton defender Jose Fonte (5.4) started as Portugal beat Latvia 4-1.

In Africa, Everton’s Yannick Bolasie (6.1) continued his fine from with a goal in Congo DR’s 2-1 win in Guinea. He was subbed off after 78 minutes, while Hull’s Dieumerci Mbokani (5.5) played the full 90 minutes – something he’s managed just the once in the league this season.

Mohamed Elneny (4.6) started Egypt’s 2-0 win over Ghana, with Hull’s Ahmed Elmohamady (4.8) an unused substitute.

Leicester’s Daniel Amartey (4.5) and West Ham midfielder Andre Ayew (7.1) started for Ghana. The former’s team-mate, Jeffrey Schlupp (4.9), played the last 20 minutes.

It would be clear that McAuley is the best pick from WBA's def.

But if im going with Nyom (4.3) i can change my "notplaying" love for another 4.5s

Is nyom nailed? Seems nailed if i check the history on app..

If Brunt can't find an advanced position in the team, he's likely to play LB. Nyom also has competition from Olsson and Galloway.

I'm with TM here. However, Dawson is on 4 YC so Nyom may need to fill in at RB soon with someone else, possibly Brunt/Olsson/Galloway, reverting to LB. Nyom may soon find he is no longer first choice. If money is tight maybe go for Evans...?

OK, after the game, will the flag get instantly removed or will they leave him flagged because they are guessing/speculating if he's still injured or not.

        Asking for another friend.

Probably depends on the Arsenal press conference tbh.

Think they usually wait for the game to finish before removing the flag but could be wrong.

also depends what time the game finishes, if it finishes at 3am then I doubt anyone from FPL towers is in. It will therefore be reviewed the next morning

Walker's flag was removed after playing for England, so presumably Sanchez's will if he finishes the match without being subbed for non-tactical reasons

Whether he plays tomorrow or not he's doubtful for the next couple of PL games. If he plays that probably makes him more certain to be put in wraps till properly recovered.

Players compete when injured or carrying knocks. They also signal to get subbed if they get a painful kick when their team is 6-0 up or something. Trying to spoon-feed everyone with fitness status is an impossible exercise when often all that is available is surmise and guesswork.

I am sure it is with the best of intentions but I think the criteria being used are dubious. A player is unfit if their club/team says so. End of story. Let FPL managers do their own research and make their own decisions as to whether some random tweet or sensationalist online article is to be trusted. The moment FPL gets involved with interpreting such things there will be problems.

You're just speculating with regards to his future participation and I'm not interested in your thoughts, I'm enquiring about the flag and when it gets removed if he completes the game with both legs attached to his body.

For example, when the game finishes and he's not broken will they remove the flag as quick as they have Hazard his or will they just do what you've done and imagine a scenario and leave the flag on with imaginary scenario in mind.

          Thank you, so courteous.

I am making a comment about the "doubtful" status and asking where the line is to be drawn. I think that's a reasonable remark. 😕

I do apologise, it's speculation of a situation which has given us the last 24 hours so I think we need some black and white.

If he complete a game without injury it's hard to argue he's not fit, if he hobbles off on 65 mins that it will be hard to argue that he's fit.

They've made a mess or Hazard and his 'injury' so we'll all be watching closely.

It should do but FPL have shown themselves to be pretty incompetent in that regard so who knows.

If a player plays a game he's technically fit but those at FPL seem to love to interprete rather than search for clarity so it's hard to tell.

Not sure you can say a player is not fit if he's just played a game, their interpretation of the situation is not important.

Awesome looking rotation, but the tree make an irrefutable argument. You'd want to pay almost any attacker against them, so why buy a defender.

              I think he's a rotation risk.

With Olivier Giroud back now, he'll be starting games soon enough. If you look at Arsenal's struggles against a deep block at home, I think Giroud is the answer with Sánchez dropping into his deeper role on the left.
Alex Iwobi is the obvious one to drop out but I think Wenger rates him very highly and he'll still get to see gametime, as will Ramsey as all of his appearances won't come in that clusterf*** of a central midfield. Wenger has a multifunctional squad and he'll definitely use it.

I think this team is around the best you can get at the moment, assuming Walcott continues to start.

I was aiming for the same front seven but I was .1 short of Austin. Will end up having to get someone at 6.5 instead.

Qualifying for the WC in a crucial match is 10x as important as anything in the PL. That would go for most South American players who will do anything to make sure they play. For Vidal, Sanchez, etc, they' always have & always will put the national team above all else.

If anyone is to blame, it's Arsenal for running him to the ground & not giving him proper rest this season.

Not really, nah. We have to make the best of this generation of players because it's the best we'll have for a long time considering our current youth talent.

Chile always comes first for our players, thankfully.

You lot are taking advantage of his passion by playing him on the brink of injury though. Have the balls to rest him so that it doesn't hamper his career.

We are? We're not forcing him to play each qualifier, he simply does it & puts his body on the line knowing how dirty some South American teams play. Chile is simply more important for him & always will be.

This isn't like European qualifiers where you're facing teams like San Marino & Estonia & are nearly always guaranteed qualification if you're a half-decent team. Like England.

He does that because of his blinding passion for his country. But if he is on the brink of an injury can't the national team manager not risk aggravating it?

If he does play and gets injured the relationship b/w Arsenal and Chile FA will be SERIOUSLY hampered.

Indeed, even vs the weakest teams like Bolivia, playing in La Paz is a nightmare for most teams. The extreme humidity in Baranquilla as well. You're rarely guaranteed an easy ride here.

Agreed on national team being a priority. However, you can't call Arsenal as having run him into the ground this season. Wenger has been careful with Sanchez this season, and being a Chilean you know it is tough to keep him on the bench even if you want to. 😀

Regardless of whether or not Sanchez plays v/s Uruguay, I think it's safe to assume that he won't start with PSG on the horizon.

Just hope that Sanchez doesn't pull his hammy and go out for a longer time. Giroud is a very good striker but the team loses it's fluidity with him as the lone ST

PSG? Arsenal are through with two games to go to try and stay top, I think it's probably safe to assume that 3 points at Old Trafford is far more important.

The top position in the CL group is of paramount importance with the caliber of players like Oz and Sanchez because they want to showcase their talent beyond the round of 16

And the PL is not? You think Wenger is happy to sacrifice 3 points at Old Trafford for a competition they are firmly in control off?

Even a draw at home is a good result, sounds like someone's fantasy team thinking is clouding real thinking/logic to me.

Haha I have Sanchez and I'm keeping him.

Wenger is ready to give Sanchez extra time to recover in order to not lose him for a longer period is my thinking.

Playing Sanchez in his red zone against United could be catastrophic. Just as playing a red zone Sanchez vs Uruguay could be suicidal

        Heaton / Pickford
        Alonso / Stones / Brunt / Holebas / Kingsley

Is this spending too much in D? Do I need to do Stones -> 4.5 for example?

Realize I may have messed up with using my FT so early.

        Foster Jaku
        Williams Stones Alonso Friend Amat
        Hazard Firmino Coutinho Allen Capoue
        Deeney Aguero Lukaku

        2m 0FT.

Worth Deeney -> Austin for -4?
