The Community Round Up

With less than a week to go before the Premier League season kicks off, the community has been busy assessing the merits of some of the player list’s priciest options, as well as rifling through its bargain bins. Manchester City’s stars have impressed our community writers, while it’s Liverpool stars and the prospects of a particular Manchester United midfielder that have preoccupied our Hot Topic posters.

Defensive Bonus point magnets are tracked down via our Members table review, while we finish off our catch-up with news of the latest community competitions, for poor performers and cosmopolitan managers alike.

The Community Articles

With three assists to his name, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has been among the summer’s best performers.Dr Agabuse has been particularly impressed with the Belgian’s new advanced role, which prompted his detailed analysis of his underlying statistics in an attacking position last season.

This convincing form has certainly been spotted by Fantasy Premier League managers, who have been queuing up to add the Man City schemer to their Gameweek 1 line ups, according to Milvus’ latest update on ownership trends.

Will our hopes for De Bruyne be dashed or can we rely on his strong underlying statistics as a guide to likely returns? Such predictions form the basis of a superb article from Prokoptas which discusses goalscoring potential.

Bournemouth stars such as Josh King and Charlie Daniels proved reliable sources of attacking points last season, but, says Woolfgang, the Cherries are among a number of teams that appear to be unfairly treated in FPL’s fixture difficulty ratings.

Spurs’ Harry Kane was perhaps the most consistent points scorer last season, after claiming the Golden Boot for the second successive campaign. However, Coley’s latest article suggests that he may not be as productive next season, with Spurs effectively facing 38 away games thanks to their relocation to Wembley Stadium.

Kane sits in more than a third of teams and earns another mention in YTFC_Scratch’s article on the prevalence of the herd mentality in Fantasy Football. This compelling piece asks whether our choices are based on logic or the desire to fit in.

There is certainly strong evidence to suggest a group think has taken hold of player selections, according to our first FPL Rate My Team surgery of the season. Analysis by Lyonnais of the teams put forward for scrutiny strongly suggests that a hive mind has helped shape an emerging template.

Elsewhere, Frankie the Gent has resurrected the debate around Fantasy Premier League’s new Free Hit chip, offering further strategies on putting it to use, either to get off to a strong start, or to finish the season with a flourish.

Meanwhile, if trying to construct the perfect FPL team and strategy has got too much for you, Triggerlips dropped by with some advice on coping with the information overload Fantasy managers are facing ahead of Gameweek 1.

Finally, Niemi has heralded the return of Fantasy Eliterserien, following a short summer break, with a team by team analysis of the latest activity in the transfer market in the Norwegian top flight.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Among the most discussed theories ahead of the new season is that Manchester United’s Paul Pogba will be reborn, be handed the freedom to roam forward and subsequently score a hatful of goals. That’s all due to United’s recent capture of Nemanja Matic as a defensive shield.

The Fantasy Freak is among those expecting big things from the Frenchman this season, although Berbinho’s Forehead remains sceptical.

Other theories for the new campaign – notably Spurs’ potential Wembley blues – were discussed in this follow-up Hot Topic we posted on Thursday.

While Kevin De Bruyne has impressed the community scribes, our Hot Topic posters have been focusing on Liverpool’s midfield stars.

Rambo Motin is flabbergasted that nine out of ten FPL managers have shunned Reds’ winger Sadio Mane, while admirers of new recruit Mohamed Salah were out in force in our Hot topic on the former Chelsea and Roma player.

Next season will surely be another where we are left proclaiming that “we can’t have them all”, with Fantasy managers struggling to fit the wealth of available attacking talent into their squads. This is particularly the case among striker selections, says Lateriser12, who suggests that the premium forward eco-system has changed markedly for 2017/18, with even more choice available.

Even Kane may struggle to compete, especially with Man City stars looking sharp in pre-season. But as Wakey points out, the Spurs man still has strong captaincy potential in his favour. Cesc’s Old Mullet also considered the England striker’s essential status and whether we dare go without him come the season kick-off.

Competition is also fierce among the community’s backlines. Indeed, Nisag17 suggests ripping up the traditional formation form book and fielding five premium options at the back, due to the raft of tempting defensive options.

Given the performance last season of top priced wing-backs – such as Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso – talk of cheap defensive rotation combinations have been conspicous by their absence this summer. Tears for Fears aimed to address that with a look at the best pairings, while Rupert the Horse pondered the merits of investing in one of West Brom’s towering rearguard.

Further defensive options were also being touted in our Hot Topic on differential gems for the new season.

Meanwhile, our community scouts have been out and about during the pre-season calendar to help uncover some further low-owned options, with Twisted Saltergater picking through Bournemouth’s options, while Andre94PT has been talent spotting among Newcastle United’s ranks.

There will be particular interest in one of the pre-season’s flagship matches this weekend – the Community Shield – with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez under the microscope, amid ongoing speculation surrounding his future.

To temper enthusiasm in stellar pre-season performances, Abel Xavier delivered some cautionary tales for those who pay too much attention to friendlies. He points out that Ahmed Musa of Leicester City and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi were among last summer’s stars that ultimately failed to deliver.

Finally, Malcolm Tucker for England has been dusting off his Underworld and Iggy Pop albums to pen a Fantasy Football version of Trainspotting’s memorable Choose Life monologue, which was this week’s most popular post in terms of votes.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members Tables

Defenders with potential for strong bonus returns, based on baseline attributes such as passing and tackling, come under scrutiny in McNulty’s latest table, while FPL Virgin has gone back to basics with his table, which focuses purely on appearances, goals and assists.

Elsewhere, players that made the most of limited pitch time last season are the focus of boniouk’s most recent table.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Fantasy Football competitions around the world are proving increasingly popular among the community. Already Fantasy Eliterserien has garnered considerable interest and VS10_ is hoping there will be similar enthusiasm for Fantasy Bundesliga, ahead of the start of the German top flight season. He dropped by to tell us more about this game and also details of how to join the FFScout community league he has set up

Only those who have never finished inside the top 10,000 in FPL are invited to join Heels Over Head’s new community competition, which aims to discover the Fantasy Football star managers of the future. The code to join his R U Smarter Than The 10K Club league is 9355-102577.

If you’re running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

He's fairly popular on here. One of the best budget strikers, but hasn't gotten much time in preseason and might not start right away.

keep seeing the lot of us rate others' teams as 6/10, 7/10, 8/10, even saw a 9/10. What is your 10/10? Never seen anyone say that. I guess if someone has the same squad as you do at the moment, it's a 10/10?

The whole giving a RMT a score out of 10 is pretty pointless. Critiquing the players & structure and offering potential alternatives is what everyone wants really.

Its a 532, 442, 353 formation, based on weekly match-ups. The only real bench is GK and FWD. Everyone else has a role to play.

        1. Turbolag

Either way you're leaving more money on the bench than most. Not saying it's a bad strategy, just never tried rotating attackers. I would, however, be a bit worried about captaincy options. Two of your premium players are on the same team.

Yeah agreed its an alternative strategy. I'm not one to follow the crowd thats for sure. My theory about being successful is that you have to get extremely lucky with rotating your bench. Last years winner played the 343 def rotation and nailed the highest scoring defender most weeks. I'm applying the same strategy but with 3 6m mids. The basis being that the best value pts/£ lies in the 6m defenders, so I want lots of them. Strikers other than the captaincy are the worst value pts/£. Putting my money where the most value can be found. Its a risk not going with the template for sure.

Love it! Not sold on Danilo though. My only suggestions would be to downgrade him or Kolas, and upgrade McBurnie.

I'm actually hoping for big things from Danilo, not only is he extremely attack, minded Pep has come out and said there will be extreme rotation. Danilo will be used in the easier games, which by my reckoning are the ones where you want your players playing. CL begins in Sept (I believe) and there are 2 games per month so Walker and Mendy will have to be rested often so they are fit for those games.

Interesting thoughts on Danilo there, Firetog. I've been very influenced by your model after committing myself to a starting back 5, so unsurprisingly my squad is pretty similar to yours.

I've been umming and ahhing over Danilo; one day he's in, the next day it's Stones! My feeling is that when he plays he could get some serious attacking points, but will he be mostly benched? I'm not expecting him to start as many games as you anticipate - if he does it will be a superb bonus. To insulate myself I'm ensuring, like you, that I have a viable bench in the form of a couple of 5.0 midfield options who can do a job if called on. It also means if Danilo is perma-dropped for Mendy, I'm not forced into a panic transfer and can afford to wait a week and do a 2FT.

I did some guess work on the Maths. There are 19 games up to just before Xmas. So half the season. 6 of those are against MUN, ARS, TOT, LIV, CHE and EVE. the "big games." He'll want to play Walker and Mendy for those if they are fit. He'll also want them for the 6 CL games too. So that 12 games where they will the the starting combo. If they dont get a 4th WB, I can see Danilo playing in the other 13 games and Mendy and Walker being rested in rotation.

That would leave Walker 6+6+7 = 19 games
                Mandy 6+6+6 = 18 games
                Danilo 13 easy games

There's also rumours that he may fill in as a DM too a position that he has played in the past. Pretty versatile guy. Another MCI gem that I want at some point is Gundogan (5.5) hoping he can recover from his ACL soon.

I plan on playing him all season. From what I read he will cover both of them and they will be rested often. Walker and Mendy will be the starters for CL and Big games. For all the others, ie about 26 easier prem games, Danilo should play. He's a Bellerin mark ii from what I can tell. spends a lot of time in the openents third.

A easily. Yes, Trippier is nailed. There is always another player but he is first choice as of now no question.

Bertrand may get more points over the first 12 games, but then you'll be needing to dump him because his fixtures suck after that. Trippier you can pretty much play all season and if his price rises to around 6 which it should, then you wont want to drop him because you'll lose money if you want to buy him back.

Wembley factor - with a longer/wider pitch I can see fewer clean sheets for Spurs whereas Bertie has great fixtures early doors. By the time Saints' fixtures turn I think most of us will have Wildcarded.

B for me too. But I'm all about a strong defence.

If you're planning the standard 343 with D3, D4 and D5 all rotating for the D3 spot, then you will want to go with (A)

    KDB | Willian | Boufal | Carroll | RLC
    Kane | Lukaku | Jesus

433...I think this could bang, Thoughts?!

Yeah it works. Bear in mind that the Soton defence is only in vogue because of the nice starting fixtures. Once they hit the nasty games you're going to need to rethink that defence.

No doubt, I think Boufal is a steal (as a saints fan).

Yes 3 good months and then I doubt a Soton player is in my team for the rest of the season. Although I would really like Austin to find his form again.....

I've got the same front 3, but behind them you're taking unwarranted risks.

GW1 - def without Cedric + Rangel, poss without Boufal and RLC (or 1 point cameos at best)

Soon after, Willian will go. Your plan to transfer him out could be hindered by dealing with your other non-players.

In short, with Boufal, RLC and Rangel, you can afford to have one likely non-player, but the others need to be able to come off the bench and perform.

An immediate fix which would give you breathing space is to put Yoshida in for Cedric.

    How's this?

    Foster
    Trippier, Alonso, Lindelof
    Zaha, De Bruyne, Salah, Chadli
    Benteke, Austin, Lukaku

    Foster, Carroll, Mee, Hünemeier

    £2.5m ITB

That's a lot of Foster. That's also a lot of money ITB. You could have Jesus or Lacazette with that money.

Like the Chadli pick as I'm not a fan of Phillips, but I still prefer Redmond. Keep him if you don't want to double up on Southampton attack. Also have to watch Lindelof's nailedness.

    How are these lads looking?

Not a fan of the defense. Two 4.0s is risky unless you're planning an early WC and I don't think spending 5.0 on a Huddersfield defender who won't be rotated is a good idea.

Hell no! A bench full of deadwood forces toy to play Smith every week - could be i for some mighty negative-point hauls there!

Why Alderweireld? Surely it would be better to get Kolasinac, Kompany, or Bailly at that price than double down on Spurs. And is there a reason for Sidwell over Carroll?

tough one, i had him in my first draft, could be a real hit! pace and can finish and if sanchez stays then lots of attacking support. however i had too have Kane and jesus so couldnt afford him, will have him at some stage though im shore

You have 11 guys who you expect to score points, I'm not sure what risk there is not having one of them from Arsenal. Presumably the 11 you chose are all decent options in their own right.
I dont have any Liv, Che and not bothered one bit.
