Scout Notes – Mane On The Money

Sadio Mane hits a hat-trick as Liverpool beat Porto 5-0 in a Champions League Round of 16 rout.

Another day, another Premier League team who will have the luxury of resting key players when the second leg of their European tie comes around in March.

Not that Liverpool have too many worries surrounding fatigue at the moment anyway.

The Reds will play just twice before they face Porto again on March 6 – over the same period, Man City have four matches.

Even so, coach Jurgen Klopp will be able to rotate till his heart’s content for that second leg, particularly with a huge Gameweek 30 clash at Man United coming four days later.

With no FA Cup match to play this weekend, Klopp has taken his troops for warm weather training before they resume league action with a visit from West Ham.

Another home match, against Newcastle, follows in Gameweek 29 before Porto visit Anfield three days later. That clash with the Magpies looked to be a rotation hot-spot but that’s no longer the cash after Tuesday’s convincing win.

The trip to Old Trafford will then make it three matches in a week for Liverpool, marking out the Champions League fixture as the obvious place to rest key assets, despite Klopp’s post-match insistence that the tie is far from done.

“I am too long in the business to think anything is sorted before the final whistle. We owe our supporters at Anfield a 100% performance and that’s what we want to deliver.”

Those supporters should forgive him if he fields a weaker team, while Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will be positively demanding it.

Liverpool players are becoming increasingly attractive options, with an excellent schedule involving just three tough encounters – the Man United match, a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park and a trip to Chelsea – over the final 11 Gameweeks of the season.

The Reds are also one of only four teams currently guaranteed a Gameweek 31 fixture. They’ll entertain Watford on a weekend otherwise hugely disrupted by the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Form, as well as fixtures, are on Liverpool’s side at present.

Mane’s hat-trick last night caught the eye, although it followed a patchy four-match run in the league in which he’d managed just one assist.

His manager, understandably, was delighted at the winger’s upturn in output.

“He gave the right answer. We met on the pitch after the last game and I said to him: ‘Finally, you are back’. Tonight he showed it again.
He was always important, he was always fantastic for us even in his ‘not that good’ moments. That’s real quality.
If you are not at 100% but still involved in goals that’s really important. Then it will come, if you keep working really hard like he did”.

Mohamed Salah’s goal in Portugal was his 30th in all competitions this season, while Roberto Firmino made it 4-0 on the night to back up a domestic run involving three goals and two assists over his last five starts.

The Brazilian is currently in the top 10 for Gameweek 28 transfers-in, with 52,000+ new FPL managers.

Mane could now prove a hugely effective differential for the forthcoming period. With Salah and Firmino such fixtures in many FPL squads, it seems likely that Mane’s 7.3% ownership will merely simmer. Those with Salah and Firmino are perhaps more likely to fill their third Liverpool slot with a defensive option, therefore overlooking Mane for the spell leading into Gameweek 31.

Virgil van Dijk will likely be that defensive acquisition. He is enjoying only a modest increase in ownership despite the fact that Liverpool have now kept three clean sheets in their last four matches in all competitions.

The 5.5-priced Dutchman is also an obvious candidate to replace Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi (6.4) in many FPL squads.

Owned by 30.6%, the Argentine is due a rest – he’s started all but one league match this season – and City have managed just one shut-out in six Gameweeks. They are also likely to have a blank Gameweek 31 unless Wigan pull off a major surprise in this weekend’s FA Cup tie.

It would be equally surprising if more managers don’t buy into Van Dijk before Gameweek 28’s deadline next Saturday morning, particularly as the make-up of the rest of the Reds’ defence is far from settled.

Klopp opted for Dejan Lovren at centre-half last night, but has used Joel Matip just as frequently in recent weeks, while Joe Gomez returned from injury to be used a second-half substitute. That could well end Trent Alexander-Arnold’s three-match run as the starting right-back when West Ham visit.

Alberto Moreno was fit enough for the bench against Porto, yet Andrew Robertson, who has started the last five Gameweeks, remains in the driving seat for the left-back berth.

The Scottish international was excellent yet again last night and offers as much attacking threat as Moreno, but without the Spaniard’s defensive shortcomings.

Meanwhile, keeper Loris Karius has now started the last six matches in all competitions.

Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and substitute Danny Ings all provided assists in Portugal, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana watched the match from the bench and Emre Can had the night off.

Thing is he is so wasteful in front of goal. 1st goal las night was shocking goalkeeping, 2nd was a tap in and third - well that was good but I'm not sure he'll be able to finish his dinner that often. Firmino better option still and need VVD too

      I agree to an extent.
Some bandwagons on here work out (Shaqiri) some don't (Lingard).
With the Liverpool foxtures and the GW31 situation, it's perfectly reasonable to be looking at Mane.
A hat trick can only boost his confidence and he is proven in FPL after all.

        True but it's all relative.
I've been fixed on Firmino & Salah and don't fancy a 3rd attacking Pool player so VvD ahead of Robertson fits my team better.

Yep, that's exactly why Mane can appeal, though. For me, as a non Firmino owner, I can keep Vardy and opt for Mane and VvD.

It's a risk, but it's not a bad one if Klopp is right in his appraisal.

The other option for me (probably on wc) if Mane hits some form is Firmino > Aguero as that's the only way I can afford Aguero.
Time will tell but Mane has been strangely out of sorts this season, possibly from playing on the left as well as injury and suspension.

Yeah, I agree - I haven't trusted Mane at all.

But I also don't doubt his explosive qualities - on his day, there are few midfielders, if any, who can match him for that.

Firmino is a real issue for me but I can go Hazard to Mane easily in one step either now, or for GW31. Getting Firmino is two steps and means losing Vardy for great fixtures.

Mane vs Firmino over the next four could be really close given that we're presuming Salah is on pens now.

Not sure there's any harm in it.

Klopp has said - "finally, you are back" so are we saying he's also jumping on a Mane bandwagon 😉

So much of Fantasy Football is about trying to find and target those players about to come into form. If it's just about getting the players who have already scored well, then we'd all go to sleep and this site and others, along with lots of Twitter channels, need not exist. Folk can just sort by points and form on the FPL site.

Finding new targets, assessing them and perhaps getting them in is what it's all about, surely? Discussing that on here is part of that. Isn't that one of the joys and purpose of a Fantasy Football community?

Of course we have to be cautious and I'm not endorsing a huge movement to Mane, but editorially, it's a good angle and as an FPL manager, I am certainly considering him.

Folk are chatting about it - that's all good. They can make their own minds up about whether to move for him or not.

Yes they might blame FFS if he blanks but we've got used to that!

As a non Firmino owner with an OR around 200k I’ve been praying for Mané to show some form. Watched the game last night and I’m still not convinced but I’m most likely getting him in now. It’s a move I’ve been eyeing up for some time now, a move that comments on this community has little to do with tbh.

His non CL form is not bad at all

      Not superb like Sterling Salah

      But 6 goals + 5 assist in 1410 minutes

thats 12 goals + 10 assists if he kept the form through a season

      That is Hazard-like productivity

Why are so many people ignoring FH for BGW31? The only players that you would still want after it would be Liverpool assets! This means all those Stoke,Watford,Everton players would need to be sold and also brought in for BGW31. Surely your better off ignoring the gameweek or possibly bringing in blankers such as KDB/Haz/Auba/Etc. You FH in 31 getting the best possible full 11 while many are stuck with 7/8 players. Then after the gameweek is over you get your normal team back which includes players who have a DGW35. Am I missing something as I haven't really payed attention to the double gameweeks?

    Who to ditch for Firmino?

    Wilson or Niasse?

bought Wilson the before recent gameweek, Mane is an option but i think Firmino is the best Liverpool pick to partner with Salah. Going VVD at the back as well.

Has Tosun and DCL as competition and even though he’s had a run of games, I highly doubt that his starting place is secure.

Would anyone go KDB to Mane for the next four games? Or is that crazy given KDB's current output? Already have:

Salah, Sterling, Gross, Lewis Cook (Mane / KDB)
    Aguero, Kane, Wilson

I will keep KDB for the tough fixtures. He has really done well before and will probably do the same again. Only concern is fatigue due to the amount of fixtures.

What would you do if this was your team?
    Adrian
    Martina VVD chilwell moreno
    Salah shaqiri walcott
    Kane kun vardy
    Subs: Speroni jones b.silva

My early thought is to bring firmino and toby for kun and moreno.
And next week b.silva to mahrez
    Seems good??
Or get a cheap defender and save money to upgrade vardy to auba later?

I’m glad Mane has done well last night. Recently he has looked so desperate for goals in the league and as a result he had become a liability for Liverpool by being ball greedy and not seeing decent passes. Last night is hopefully the turning points and we get the old Mane back 🙂

    Hello,

    DDG
    Jones, Otamendi*, Alonso*
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Lingard*
    Wilson, Kane, Firmino

    (Elliot, McArthur, Mee, Mariappa)

    A) Alonso & Lingard -> Naughton & Mahrez
    B) Alonso & Lingard -> VVD & Walcott
    C) Otamendi & Lingard -> VVD & Shaqiri

Thinking B or C with GW31 in mind?

    Cheers

Yes B or C are best options but you don’t need to decide now. Better options may become available after this weekend

Play Jones (CHE) or Tark (SOU) next GW? Wouldn't normally bench a United defender but can't see Southampton scoring vs Burnley..

probably play Tark, but it's always tough benching the more premium player

Mate I was about 1.2m at around Easter last year and finished in the top 200k, so it's possible.

Cross your fingers for a Josh King though.

I reckon top 10k still possible. Everyone bangs on about template but it’s template for a reason - it’s the players scoring the highest points. So template plus a couple of early cheeky punts and a healthy dose of captaincy luck and you’re up the league. Simples. If only.
