Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Willian Stars For Chelsea

Chelsea win but almost blow it against Crystal Palace, while it’s all sweetness and light for Newcastle and the exact opposite at West Ham.

More than 104,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers made Willian Gameweek 30’s third most purchased player and he didn’t disappoint in the 2-1 victory over Palace.

The Brazilian scored for the second time in three Gameweeks, from an N’Golo Kante assist, and now has four goals and three assists in his last six starts.

Davide Zappacosta was unlucky not to pick up extra points when his goal-bound shot was blocked by Martin Kelly and hit both Wayne Hennessey and Kelly again before ending up in the net.

That turned out to be the winner as Palace grabbed a late goal when Patrick van Aanholt finished smartly from Wilfried Zaha’s pass to consign Chelsea to a third straight match without a clean sheet – and the fifth time in six Gameweeks.

The Blues should have been home and hosed long before then anyway, with Hennessey forced into seven saves to keep out a dominant home side.

Olivier Giroud was preferred to Alvaro Morata up front – suggesting that the latter will be starting the midweek Champions League tie in Barcelona – and the Frenchman should have scored at least twice.

He was denied by one superb goal-line clearance from James Tomkins and also hit the post, while Eden Hazard set up Giroud’s first big chance and missed one of his own in a busy display for only three points – he was off the field by the time Palace scored.

Chelsea will likely have a double Gameweek 34, involving trips to Burnley and Southampton, which should encourage investment in Willian, Hazard and even Marcos Alonso as the fixtures should involve at least one clean sheet.

But the Blues will have a blank Gameweek 35 if they see off Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, which would serve up another double, probably in Gameweek 37, involving home matches with Liverpool and Huddersfield.

The return of Zaha, a half-time substitute for Christian Benteke, was the headline news for the Eagles and the 3.6%-owned midfielder could now become a Gameweek 31 differential as Roy Hodsgon’s men travel to Huddersfield.

Another who might be worth a look is van Aanholt, who made it back-to-back goals for his 1.1% ownership.

Newcastle see off sorry Saints

Chelsea loanee Kenedy is currently Gameweek 30’s top scorer after his a brace and maximum bonus brought in 16 points as Newcastle swept past Southampton 3-0.

They were the Brazilian’s first goals on his sixth start for the Magpies, with assists coming from Jonjo Shelvey and Marcus Gayle – the third return in four Gameweeks from the latter.

Shelvey also set up Newcastle’s third goal for Matt Ritchie.

It was a second straight clean sheet at home for Rafa Benitez’s side, but a blank Gameweek 31 and a probable double Gameweek 34 involving Arsenal and Spurs is unlikely to tempt many managers into investment.

Their assets are considerably more attractive than Southampton’s, however.

The Saints are porous at the back, with one clean sheet in nine matches, and toothless up top, where they’ve scored just once in four Gameweeks.

They too have a blank next and a probable double Gameweek 34 that pairs a visit from Chelsea with a vital away match at Swansea City.

Their woeful form and fixtures with both Arsenal and Man City in the run-in do not bode well and they remain an investment-free zone for FPL managers.

All disquiet on the West Ham front

Three straight losses, pitch invasions and angry protests directed at the club’s owners – things are turning toxic at West Ham.

The 3-0 home defeat by Burnley means that the Hammers have now shipped 11 goals in the last three Gameweeks and just one win in seven keeps them firmly in the relegation mixer.

Marko Arnautovic was back as the lone striker, with Chicharito benched, but the 29,000+ managers who sold the Austrian before yesterday’s deadline chose wisely as he blanked for a third successive match.

Burnley were ruthless in their exploitation of the feral atmosphere inside the London Stadium.

Their opener, Ashley Barnes’ third straight goal, prompted the first set of fans to invade the pitch, but it didn’t distract the Clarets one bit.

Once the discontent had died down enough for the match to continue, Chris Wood made it 2-0 just four minutes later, and things turned increasingly ugly from then on.

The striker went on to score another and now has three goals from a mere 74 minutes of pitch-time – all from the bench – since returning from injury.

The win marked Burnley’s first clean sheet since Gameweek 21, with goalkeeper Nick Pope (9.9%) claiming one save and two bonus points for a nine-point haul overall.

He now has 18 bonus points for the season – four more than any other stopper.

Sean Dyche’s side are in line for a double Gameweek 34 involving home matches with Leicester City and Chelsea. The fact that they’ll also feature in Gameweek 35, away at Stoke City, further adds to the appeal of their assets.

Wood and Barnes are in-form and pleasingly cheap (6.2 and 5.2 respectively), while Pope is probably the best defensive option to consider, although the fit-again Tom Heaton might yet have something to say about that.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Gameweek 30 - Lessons learned so far.

Here’s a few to get the discussion started. Feel free to comment on these or suggest your own.

Patience proves a virtue with Everton

Lots got in early on Everton assets ahead of Gwk 31 at a cost. Walcott has blanked over many weeks, while it turns out Niasse isn’t in favour after all.

Could it be that Coleman or Baines are the key Toffees we should be considering? Their performance in Gwk 30 certainly indicates they could be. But which one should we get?

Zaha back in the nick of time.

One key asset for gwk 31 could be Zaha - who impressed off the bench against Chelsea. His assist proves he has the potential to reward the faith of investors. Could he be a Walcott replacement given the Everton man’s frailties?

A Bournemouth attacker could be vital

West Brom look broken and in obliging mood at the back. Could a Bournemouth mid or fwd once again be the main star of a blank Gameweek? The manner of the Baggies’ defeat to Leicester would indicate their whipping boy status will continue.

In future I will not prepare for blanks so far in advance.. opting for players like Walcott over Mahrez had been a disaster!

Indeed - although I am now v tempted by another nostalgia pick in Baines - esp as he looks to be back on pens.

With defenders, it's tricky though. We can predict clean sheets to come in a period of 3 weeks or so fairly well. But to predict it to come in a single match is hard, especially with this bunch. The pens are random too.

Should have binned Alonso weeks ago, another blank. No returns of any kind for 6 GWs now.

I’ve got Wilson and Firmino already and was thinking of adding Tekkers to my GW31 strikeforce, but a Bournemouth double up with Josh King is starting to look very viable.

I know what you’re saying he could have had an assist last game and he was close to a clean sheet yesterday but being close all the time isn’t good enough for a £7.2m defender.

Rivals in my mini-league who downgraded to Bavies and put the money into getting the likes of Mahrez have reaped the rewards while Alonso has blanked for 6 GWs.

That Mahrez is in excellent form and a shoo in for our wildcard squads.

            Ok, I’ll bite. 😉

It’s because there are better goalkeepers who get better returns - Even among Gwk 31 teams.

            Butland the main target.

Coleman has assist potential. Baines pens and assists.

Plus money no object for most in the bgwk - so why scrimp on Pickford when you can get better for more cash.

              *there 🙂

But seriously, Yes, better options in general but he's as good an option as a 6.4m defender in a team who just kept their 1st CS in 10 games, worth noting that Coleman got no attacking returns yesterday, Pickford continued to get save points.

No reason not to include him in the article.

Biggest lesson learnt is not getting gw31 players in too early for the sake of it but look at dangerous attackers with high points potential who have great fixtures. Mahrez has got me 24 pts over 3 gws. Eriksen should also haul today. The problem with getting too many gw31 players too early is they can get injured be dropped and not score any points before gw31.

Plus look at fixtures gw30 and gw31 to see what team playing in gw31 has the best fixtures. I doubled up on lossl and Schindler for Huddersfield after Adrian fail and was instantly rewarded.

Looking to get zaha and king in next week as they seem the most dangerous players who could haul.

Was thinking of Mounie or Pritchard but are they really at the required consistent standard. Should have done better yesterday.

This game all about probability and opportunity in getting the right players in at the right time

Most BGW 31 players look utter sh*te, to be fair.

Bournemouth playing an Albion team that appear to have already accepted and embraced the fact that they will be playing Championship football next season looks appealing.

But, who on Bournemouth do you trust to haul? It could be King. Or Stanislas. Or Fraser. Or Surman. Or Defoe.

Stoke at home are capable of shutting out Everton.

Watford and Liverpool will probably be like an NBA game but everyone will have 2 of Salah, Firmino and Mané, so nothing really will be gained there.

Palace are fighting for their lives, still in the bottom 3, I fancy them to get a result at Huddersfield, which makes me wary of loading up on Hudds players.

I only have 6 BGW players at the moment, 5 really as Crouch isn’t really a starter, and will get 2 more with my 2 FT but I’m not expecting much at all.

This is a good post, it's going to be such a lottery that it makes little or no sense to sell one player in that week for another because they are all as capable of eachother as scoring or doing nothing.

No one is consistent from these clubs, loads will sell Walcott and Wilson for King and Siggy but you're just as likely to get it wrong on the day as you are right.

For all you know Crouch could start and score 2 goals like Kenedy did yesterday, very few called that because predicting points from this pool is hard to do.

That Bolasie could be a great differential for GW31.
That Mane seems super up for the end of the season.

And, with one free transfer still in the bank, it is a tough choice between Zaha, PvA, Bolasie, Siggy and (depending on what happens tomorrow) Josh King.... but that King seems to be the best option as he has the best GW 32 fixture. (I want to WC in 33).

BTW, anybody else feel like its a tough call to take out Niasse (ive had him for ages as an enabler)? I can already see him being subbed on with 30 minutes to go then scoring a brace out of nowhere 🙂

I have the same Niase issue with Crouch.

I’ve kept him because I figure that 1 point in GW31 is better than none. Unless he gets a YC.

Just play him and hope you get something even if it’s just a point.

Not so much of a GW30 lesson but a season lesson brought home by seeing people sweat about Walcott and that's not to chase BGW or DGW players ahead of time. Injury, form and selection can mean you're left with a non player and if they aren't a tier 1 player then you lose out on returns. I think it's better to play strong players and get their returns then take a hit. Occasionally there will be a cheap DGW/BGW option that works out like a Shaquiri but how many got in Walcott when they could have had Mahrez and just taken a hit in GW31? I only got rid of Adrian this week after bringing him in for the DGW. You end up stuck with these ultimately weak players.

Alonso and de gea have been stinking up my team for some weeks now-) thank god i have not gone into the Wally trap, but never was a chance of that, as he plays for BSA and not Arsene Wenger, which it seems people tend to still think?

Looks like Bournemouth attackers could be good next week so guess i take a punt on King, already and hopefully have Stanislas already. Mounie could be a dark horse. Planning for 31 with also a look on good options like Mahrez (hopefully Eriksen gives something today) have been pretty balanced, although Stanislas just one goal in 4 matches, still better than Wally-)

That cheap defenders in latter half of season really are a complete lottery.

Huddersfield probably aren't going to be a reliable source of attacking points. 29 attempts only 4 on target.

Mahrez won't be at Leicester next year.

Moyes is a train wreck manager.

There are already 3 sides to avoid for fpl (even if they quintuple GWs) - West ham, WBA, saints.

Triple up on BOU v WBA seems a great idea atm.
Also triple EVE now appeals to me with Coleman + Baines + Tosun currently in my FH team.
Lesson learned: Ashley Young's pocket was well big enough for Salah after all 😉

Injuries to Harry Kane and Kun Aguero could really mess up plans for DGWs, Triple Captain chips and Wildcard squads.

Jordan Ayew's red card isn't helpful either - now relying on Sterling playing tomorrow, so I don't get an auto-sub of -2 points.

And even elite defenders can let you down by conceding in the 89th minute.

But thank goodness for Mahrez and Pope!

Yes, but Lossl isn’t in any danger of losing his place next week, Adrian was. Getting him in now shouldn’t pose any danger unless he gets injured in training this week.

Even then, what if he gets injured in the warmup after the deadline has passed? Nothing you can do about that.

For a BGW short of talent I sure am struggling to pick a maverick MID to pin my hopes on. Who would you pick from the early favourites?

    A) Shaq
    B) Walcott (if fit)
    C) Zaha

Walcott has been the biggest waste of a FT for me I’ve known in a long time. Blanks each week I’ve owned him and the GW that I bought him in for he gets injured...

    Is this worth a -8?:
    Ward + Deulofeu + J.Ayew > S.Cook + Milivojevic + Deeney
