World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Iran

Making their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance this summer, Iran face an uphill task if they are to progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

Iran, who were the third team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after hosts Russia and CONMEBOL winners Brazil, kick off their Group B campaign against Morocco in Saint Petersburg on Friday June 15.

A daunting encounter with Spain in Kazan follows five days later, before Iran round off their group campaign on Monday June 25 by taking on Portugal in Saransk.

Road to Qualification

Iran breezed through the second round of AFC qualifying, remaining unbeaten in their five-team group that also included Oman, Turkmenistan, Guam and India. Carlos Queiroz’s side recorded 6-0 wins in their home and away ties with Guam, scoring a total of 26 goals in their eight group fixtures and conceding only three.

The third and final round of qualification in Asia proved just as straightforward, with Iran undefeated in their ten group matches. Injury-time goals from Reza Ghoochannejhad and Alireza Jahanbakhsh in their opening-day 2-0 win over Qatar set Iran on their way, before the challenges of China, Uzbekistan, Syria and South Korea gradually fell away.

Qualification was assured with two matches to spare, following a 2-0 home win over Uzbekistan. The 2-2 final-day draw with Syria was the only fixture in which Iran failed to keep a clean sheet.

Ten goals in as many matches represented a modest goalscoring return, with three of Iran’s fixtures ending goalless.

AFC World Cup Qualifying Third Round
Most starts: Alireza Beiranvand, Saeid Ezatolahi, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Morteza Pouraliganji, Milad Mohammadi (9), Ramin Rezaeian (8), Mehdi Taremi (7), Ehsan Hajsafi, Sardar Azmoun (6), Ashkan Dejagah (5), Pejman Montazeri, Vahid Amiri, Masoud Shojaei (4)

Most goals: Sardar Azmoun (4), Mehdi Taremi (3), Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Reza Ghoochannejhad (1)

Most assists: Masoud Shojaei (2), Ramin Rezaeian, Mehdi Taremi, Sardar Azmoun, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Karim Ansarifard (1)

Since qualifying, Iran have won six of their nine friendlies: a draw with World Cup hosts Russia and away defeats to Tunisia and Turkey the only blemishes on a run of victories over admittedly limited opposition in Togo, Venezuela, Panama, Sierra Leone, Algeria and Uzbekistan.

The Key Targets

With 23 international goals in 31 appearances, Sardar Azmoun (£6.1m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is Iran’s main threat in attack and was their top goalscorer in qualifying (11 goals across two rounds).

Dominant in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet, the Rubin Kazan striker will be the spearhead of the Iranian attack in a 4-2-3-1 or in Queiroz’s favoured 4-3-3 formation. The fact that Azmoun has yet to hit double figures in a single league season is some cause for concern, as is Iran’s unexceptional goalscoring record in qualifying: five teams outscored Iran in the third round of AFC qualification.

With a total of eight goals in qualifying, Mehdi Taremi (£5.9m on Fantasy iTeam | £7.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a marginally cheaper forward option, albeit an inconsistent one. Taremi will likely play on the opposite flank to Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.0m on Fantasy iTeam | £7.0m on McDonald’s FIFA), the exciting AZ winger/forward who finished as top goalscorer on 21 goals in this season’s Eredivisie. Jahanbakhsh also supplied 12 assists for the Dutch club in 2017/18.

Iran’s strength in qualification was not, in fact, their attack, but rather their solid defence. Featuring in all-but-one of their third-round fixtures, Morteza Pouraliganji (£5.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a safe bet to start at centre-half. The tough, no-nonsense defender is also a considerable aerial threat from set-pieces, having scored an impressive ten goals in 49 appearances for Qatari club Al Sadd.

The Long Shots

Nottingham Forest fans may just about recognise Ashkan Dejagah (£5.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA), who played all of 14 minutes for the Championship club after signing on a short-term deal in January. The main concerns around Dejagah surround his fitness, having played a grand total of 128 minutes in his last two seasons at club level.

Should he feature, the former Fulham attacking midfielder offers assist potential from set pieces and will also likely be on spot-kick duties, having scored penalties in qualifying and in Iran’s recent friendlies – including the consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat to Turkey on 28 May.

With goalkeepers receiving a point for every two saves made on Fantasy iTeam’s World Cup competition, Alireza Beiranvand (£5.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) could quickly rack up a tidy score in Iran’s matches against Spain and Portugal. Beiranvand is also famed for his long throws and offers the unlikeliest of assist possibilities: his astonishing 70-yard throw led to a goal in Naft Tehran’s 2-1 victory over Tractor Sazi in November 2014.

Areas to Avoid

Nicknamed the “Persian Pogba”, 21-year-old midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi (£5.4m on Fantasy iTeam| £5.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is tipped for great things – but also suspended for Iran’s opening group match against Morocco, which surely represents Iran’s best chance of what would only be their second victory in a World Cup fixture.

While Beiranvand has the compensatory save points to fall back on in intimidating-looking fixtures against Spain and Portugal, there is no such safety net for the defenders in front of him.

Rouzbeh Chesmi (£4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA), listed as a £5.3m midfielder on Fantasy iTeam, started Iran’s away friendly in Turkey alongside Pouraliganji and looked suspect as Cenk Tosun scored twice for the hosts. The second centre-back position appears to be a weakness, with 34-year-old Pejman Montazeri (£5.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) another unconvincing option in that role. Veteran centre-half Jalal Hosseini was surprisingly omitted from Queiroz’s preliminary 24-man squad.

Because you of the constant subs you want all your players in this game to have at least a chance of getting some points, against a half decent Morocco side, Spain and Portugal Iran's 'strong' defence will be seriously tested and their already weak attack will likely be stifled by Morocco and Spain certainly, both very defensive sides.

Thank you for your answer/question. My father beat me a lot as a child and he was a huge fan of the German team. This is the main reason why I do not want that Germany will win the World Cup. But I also think Germans are a little rude, selfish and cold. I am often abroad and there I find the people friendlier, more sympathetic and humane. Some also think that Germany is the best country on earth and if Germany wins the World Cup, they think it all the more. But all the best for your studies. Hopefully you will have an awesome time.

English are fine people. I was several time in London and it is a fantastic city.

I like the fact that the English have a real interest in the sport. There are more and more people going to a sports event just to say they were there or just interested in the national athletes. Last year I was at the Swimming World Championships in Budapest. After it was clear that a Hungarian athlete can not win a medal, a lot of people left the arena. But English people are always well informed and are also interested or are looking forward to foreign athletes. English stay until the end. See the World Athletics Championships in London last year.

It would be fun if England beat Germany in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

I know that Oslo is very expensive. Therefore I only stay a few days. Especially the alcohol is extremely expensive, but I do not drink anyway. It is said that the alcoholics in front of Oslo main railway station are the richest Norwegians, as only they can afford alcohol. This joke is told in Germany.

    https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/mohamed-salahs-injury-champions-league-12623590.amp

Mohamed Salah's injury in the Champions League final was punishment from God for breaking his Ramadan fast, an Islamic preacher has claimed.

Muslim's are allowed to break their fasting for travel purposes. But Kuwaiti preacher Mubarak al-Bathali says Salah sinned by breaking his fast for the match, rather than the journey from Britain to Ukraine, which was "not a legitimate excuse".

"God punished him," he wrote on Twitter. Al-Bathali claims that Salah was poorly advised and added: "Unfortunately, [he will] bear the burden."

He continued: "Do not think the Muslim believes that life is managed by reason and effort, but life is the hand of God comes to whom he will, whether hard or not diligent.

"Perhaps [the injury] is good for you."

Al-Bathali also claimed that Salah was a "virtuous, good and respected man" and is a great ambassador for Muslims.

"Do not grieve, the door of repentance is open," he said.

So God changed the entire course of a match and the outcome, and possibly an overwhelmingly Muslim country's chances of doing well in a World Cup, affecting millions of fans worldwide, because one believer didn't quite fast properly? Seems a bit harsh.

In the words of Modest Mouse: "God, who'd want to be such a control freak?"

      What a load of bs.

There were other players on each team that are Muslims like Mane who was Liverpool's best player on the night and Benzema who scored the first goal for RM God was cool with them as he should be.

Salah was after a long hard season and could have been prone to injury regardless of any fasting.

      12 matches
      53 points
      26 saves

Interested to get some of your opinions on this - in the Fantasy iTeam game, Russia strike Fedor Smolov is 6.4m, exactly the same as top defenders Kimmich, Alba, Pique and Marcelo. Which of the two options do you think will score more points in the group stages?

Basically a question of premium defender vs budget, although potentially high scoring, forward.

Kimmich for me, although I'm opting for Hector and using cash elsewhere.

This season I have/had 2.319 points and my overall rang was 8.602. Another player have/had also 2.319 points, but he is nearly 200 places better in the overall rang. What is the reason of that or why is this?

Is 2.319 points and an overall rang of 8.602 okay?

    Thank you!

      1. Emiliano Sala

We are not a weak team but queiroz will surely defend heavily vs spain and portugal
Azmoun has the highest chance because he is CF. I rate Taremi more than Azmoun but he may get subbed around 70th minute. They are somehow Auba/lacazette. Auba is better but playing on wing. And azmoun is surely a starter.
After all I can't see my side score more than 1
But Pouraliganji is a great defender I tell you.

It really won't. The question will be is it worth having a player on that first day at all.

I think it is best to have at least a player playing on each day to maximisee the chance of hiting a decent captain score on the whole. But that first match on the first day of Russia vs Saudi Arabia doesn't really scream points does it?

        1. Yozzer
          • 6 Years
          5 years, 11 months ago

Depends really. So many transfers you can kind of take a pot shot with 26 transfers then an amnistey and if it pays off it's a huge advantage after the first day. I am losing faith in Russia though I admit. Think I may have a look at other block options. I'm convinced that is the way to go

Are you planning for the Telegraph game then?

I guess mostly in my head I am thinking of McDonalds when it comes around. I will be puting together a Telegraph team but that will take a bit more crunching of the fixtures. To get the most out of the fixtures with a whopping number of trannies is quite a headache.

        2. Yozzer
          • 6 Years

I think in Telegrapph you will want to use more trannies in the first 2 rounds of fixtures than for the final batch so don't save to many. I know you can swap players between matches but with fixtures happening at the same time as each other there will not be quite as much scope for maximising the points

I guess that is where it is different as an outsider looking in from actually living there

Yeah true. It's sort of a constant shock living over here especially as a leftist. Really sad what's going on here. what are your thoughts from a distance...?

Well I am no expert. I always think it is funny how certain political traits tend to be considered to belong either left or right.

Being a racist isn't really a left or right thing in my eyes but is maybe more prevelant on one side or the other. In the UK for example there has been an issue with the labour party (left wing) with an issue with anti Jewish sentiments. Whereas UKIP on the right wing are much more obviously racist.

It is amazing the furore which can be created by someone who is past there prime making a racist comment. Twitter is a dangerous tool in this respect, once it is written the comments are out there and they can be judged on it. I am sure there are many more famous people who have had prejudice views like this but have not had the tools to put it out in the public domain in quite such a stupid manner and therefore their opinions have never come to light.

This is of course absolutely true but having said that the tools are now there to put yourself out in the public sphere. And if you take that opportunity to express racist views then you deserve the punishment that comes with it.

On the Labour party thing I have heard this but not enough to make a comment. The Anti Semitic tag gets thrown around here too because obviously the Jewish population in the USA is quite large and politically powerful. I do think in this country at least it does get unfairly thrown on people that support Palestine and criticize Israel and their policies and that is unfair and incorrect.

                      Oh I agree completely.

It just makes you wonder how many othehr folks there have been who we all maybe loved and if tools like Twitter had been around maybe we would feel differently.
