Mata and Martial start as Mourinho hints at Gameweek 1 back-four

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has already been incredibly helpful for Fantasy Premier League managers after the Red Devils’ first pre-season match.

Following a 1-1 draw with Club America in Phoenix, Arizona he revealed who would be his back-four for Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere there were friendlies for Liverpool and Wolves.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from another round of pre-season matches.

Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Liverpool

  • Goals: Lazar Markovic, Daniel Sturridge
  • Assists: Sturridge, Naby Keita (£7.5m)

Daniel Sturridge and Naby Keita (£7.5m) were the stand-out performers as Liverpool won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers.

The English striker, not yet priced up by FPL, added his third goal of pre-season while new signing Keita put up his third assist.

It started slowly for the Reds as James Milner (£5.5m) missed a penalty following Dominic Solanke (£5.0m) being fouled in the area.

Adam Lallana (£7.0m) was the most influential player in the first-half, supplying Solanke with great delivery as well as hitting the crossbar and nearly scoring a lob on the goalkeeper himself.

Substitutes Keita and Sturridge combined twice early in the second-half, with a defence-splitting ball from the former putting the Englishman through only to drag wide before another was sent just over the bar.

The deadlock was broken when Sturridge was the provider, his pass lashed home by Lazar Markovic.

Shortly afterwards Sturridge made it 2-0 after yet another insightful pass from Keita.

LIVERPOOL FIRST-HALF XI (4-4-2): Karius; Moreno, Klavan, Matip, Clyne; Ojo, Lallana, Milner, Woodburn; Solanke, Origi.

LIVERPOOL SECOND-HALF XI (4-3-3): Karius; Robertson, Van Dijk, Phillips, Gomez; Jones, Keita, Fabinho; Markovic, Sturridge, Camacho.

Club America 1-1 Manchester United

  • Goals: Juan Mata (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Ander Herrera (£5.0m)

Juan Mata (£6.5m) rescued a draw for Manchester United in their first pre-season match after Jose Mourinho, as expected, named a largely second string side.

Lee Grant (not yet in FPL) began the match in goal while Anthony Martial (£7.5m) lined up as a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 system.

The Frenchman could have had a penalty in the ninth minute but the referee waved away his appeals. Apart from an effort grazing the crossbar early on, it was a largely disappointing performance for Martial, who was too isolated up front. He was substituted on the hour-mark with a possible knock.

That was when Club America took the lead thanks to a strong Henry Martin header.

Having hit the post in the first-half, Mata scored the equaliser. Substitute Tahith Chong whipped in a lovely ball for Ander Herrera (£5.0m), whose header cannoned back off the woodwork for Mata slamming home the rebound on the volley.

After the match, Jose Mourinho said that the back-four who started it, Antonio Valencia (£6.5m), Chris Smalling (£6.0m), Eric Bailly (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m), would all likely line-up against Leicester City in Gameweek 1.

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Grant (J Pereira 45’); Shaw (Greenwood 76’), Smalling, Bailly, Valencia (Fosu-Mensah 45’); Herrera, McTominay (Tuanzebe 87’); Mitchell (Darmian 60’), Mata (Gomes 87’), A Pereira; Martial (Chong 60’).

Wolves 1-1 Ajax

  • Goals: Ruben Neves (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Helder Costa (£5.0m)

Ruben Neves (£5.0m) got his first goal of pre-season in a 1-1 draw with Ajax at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium on Thursday.

He found the net from the penalty spot after Helder Costa (£5.0m) was fouled in the area.

FPL midfielder Diogo Jota (£6.5m) lined up as a centre-forward for the first time this summer, having spent one match on the flank and missing another so far.

The former Atletico Madrid man started 10 matches in the Championship as the striker in Nuno’s 3-4-3 system, furthering his appeal in FPL for 2018/19.

He was the focal point for Wolves’ attacking play in the match and had several chances to score in the first-half, although he could not find a breakthrough.

It was Ajax who went into the interval 1-0 up after Donny van de Peek cut inside and found the net from 15 yards.

Wolves levelled from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute when Costa was brought down in the area. Neves stepped up to smash in the equaliser from 12 yards.

WOLVES XI (3-4-3): Norris (Ruddy 45’); Boly, Coady, Bennett (Saiss 71’); Giles, Gibbs-White (Goncalves 71’), Neves, Doherty; Cavaleiro (Ashley-Seal 71’), Jota, Costa.

Arsenal 1-2 Brentford

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)
  • Assists: None

Arsenal played another secret friendly on Thursday with little information available on it.

The Gunners lost 2-1 to Championship side Brentford after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) made it five goals in three pre-season matches with his equaliser.

The Bees winner came from a Bernd Leno (£5.0m) error in which he failed to deal with a ball into the box.

Arsenal will now head to Singapore for more high-profile friendly matches against Paris Saint Germain and Atletico Madrid.

Last season, Mata played against the minnows, and Lingard against the Top 6. Tactical reasons.

So GW3 Lingard may start over Mata, if he is back.

Martial picked up a knock last night, so be wary. I can't see him being worth it myself. Jose will surely want Lukaku back for the GW3 game against Spurs.

Agreed - I have Martial in my current draft but having a guaranteed transfer is annoying me so i may yet lose him for Siggy or Ramsey

I don’t mind it, as a united attacker can easily turn to an Arsenal or Chelsea one come week 3.

Martial and Sturridge essential. So the essential template is something like

    Schmeichel (Chelsea) - 4.0
    PVA - Coleman - Robbo - 4.5 - 4.5
    Salah - Martial - Lamela - Deulofeu - Ward
    Sturridge - Auba - Tosun

Tottenham are set to include Moussa Sissoko in a player-plus bid for £60M rated Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha.

Tottenham/Levy thinking they can play CPFC like that ... LOL.

At Spurs or any other club he'd likely be ROOP (even a strong chance at Palace he's gonna revert back to a winger than free floating striker).

Zaha's agent is a known stirrer and understandably so. However, I'm still not sold on the validity of the claims being reported (IMO)

Few weeks left in the window now.

Are you happy with your clubs business so far and what further signings are you looking for?

I'm delighted with our business - I think we've done enough to close the gap on City somewhat. Still think we need 2 more players (CB & AM) to push City all the way. To be honest, I'm surprised City haven't strengthened more than they have.

Keita looks like an incredible buy. Shakiri and Fabinho also good buys. A little annoyed at how well Liverpool have done in the window.

United need fullbacks, maybe an experienced CB like Godin too. But Dalot probably means Valencia is first choice, which is disappointing. Don't know what to expect from Fred. Unusually short for a Mourinho player, so he must be good.

Liverpool look the most improved for me, Arsenal second most improved as overall I think they'll improve a lot.

The rest about the same. United, City, Chelsea probably all improved slightly. Tottenham standing still but got some players to re-sign

Surely Manchester United aren't going to be relying on 2 converted wingers in their mid 30's at full back for another season are they?! If I was a united fan i'd be pulling my hair out. Just watching city and Liverpool sail right past them. If Chelsea and Arsenal get it right under their new managers then they are a threat too...

I hope not. They really struggled with width going forwards, and need some quality full backs to provide it. A striker like Lukaku needs crosses coming in. He's starved out there.

Pretty happy about things for Arsenal so far, biggest worry is Ramsey leaving, but I suspect he will stay.

Liverpool have put an awful amount of pressure on themselves to win the league with their ridiculous outlay, hopefulyy for their sake they'll do it.

I don't know about pressure, they're just spending the money they've earnt from the champions league and coutinho how they see fit. I don't think they're gambling with money they don't have or anything like that.

I just mean from a fans point of view. They have certainly bought the correct players, not like United under van Gaal. City spent a small fortune season before last, and it was seen as a massive under achievement that they finished the season trophy less.

MUFC: appalled, frankly. Need one if not two central defenders and we keep being linked to one attacking player after another.

WH, for whom I have a bit of a soft spot: not happy with transfer policy in the last couple of years, so nothing new here. Looks like every possible name out there in the mid-price range is in play and there seems to be no real cohesion to them.

May sound strange in these times where money seems to have lost its value. I´m pretty happay as it is.
Don´t think we need another CB at all. We kept a lot of CS´s and have a lot of options. If anything I´d like a back up for Lukaku but as that poor sod would be a clear 2nd option it can´t be easy to find someone.
Fred was a good signing even though we have no idea how he will fare in premier league.

We’ve kept a lot of CSS because DDG has been playing out of his mind. Smalling and Jones shouldn’t even be backups on this team, nor is Lindelof ready to step in every week. Money HAS lost its value and shelling out 75 mil for Toby is 30 mil too much for me, but if you have a chance to get him in this day, you don’t pass him up. Not when your own defenders can’t hit a 40-yard ball to save their lives.

Absolutely not. We've signed only Jorginho and possibly Rugani having wasted half the window looking for Sarri. We're gonna suffer in the wings especially if Hazard leaves and we have yet to find a suitable replacement for Courtois on top of which Morata may leave and we might get Higuain :/

I´d rather trust the ones we´ve got this season.
Toby situation leaves an opportunity and ok, I wouldn´t mind getting him and selling Smalling. But to say Jones shouldn´t even be a back up in this team is just bonkers imo.

We must have been watching two different Joneses play. Horrid at the WC and clueless in red. Never lived up to his promise and needs to GO. I’d keep Smalling before keeping him.

Arsenal vs Man Utd last season was an absolute joke. We must have had about 30-40 shots on target, and De Gea completely saved your bacon!

City seem to have a clean bill of health - it’s like 2 or 3 new players for them. Plus a few youngsters seem to be pushing for inclusion in the match day squad.

      West Ham.
Very happy actually and its good to see they have backed the manager with some decent money. We're all now more concerned with trimming the squad of fringe players and hoping that contracts are signed or extended (Declan Rice especially). But we still arguably need a combat-ready midfielder and possibly another pacy player across the front positions wouldn't go amiss.

There's always the possibility of someone unsettling Arnie too, which is a problem.

But then Mkhi looks good value, so does Leno, their attackers.

Arsenal the team, for me, that show value almost everywhere

Dont forget their full backs priced similarly as Coleman, PVA etc (or even less in Kola's case). Should be great value there as well if they are a legit top 4 contention team.

Biggest issue with Ramsey is where he will play, if he's further back as suspected, there won't be as many goals.

Easy to swap for Arsenal defender who looks nailed after the first 2 games. Reckon Bailly will play the first 2 at least.

Surely Martial just loses his place once Pogba and Lukaku are back. Same with Shaw -> Young.

Shaw has potential to pick that LB spot from Young. Young already 33 years so if Shaw plays well should be 1st choice then.

But we know how Mourinho has his faves - always reverts to them at the first opportunity.

Given that he clearly + demonstrably hasn't trusted Shaw before, he's basically going to have to become Roberto Carlos to lock that place down (IMO).

Would you be surprised if Young immediately got his place back, even if Shaw did well?

Exactly. Feels like Shaw needs to reach a performance level higher than he's capable of - and he'll know it.

That's true maybe I am just having too much hopeful thinking with Shaw and Jose. If I remember right Jose sold Mata from Chelsea to United bcs he didn't rate him but in United after the end he gave him a chance and Mata took his place from starting 11. Might be that Shaw is too risky pick though.

Latest version, with 4-3-3, allowing me to go quite top heavy for the first couple of weeks. Probably with an early wildcard in mind.

GK - Pickford (& Stekelenberg), fixtures and form, hoping Everton take advantage of their initial kindly run.

DEF - dbl Man Utd with Shaw and Bailly, I see them as the most likely clean sheet candidates for GW1&2. Sakho is a ling term pick, very good value there imo. VVD same, nailed on and hopefully one of the highest scoring defenders this season.

MID - Sanchez, I expect him to tear Leicester defence to shreds, and Sané as my other premium mid, third spot taken by Deulofeu, shone at Watford and of last season, and fixtures look kind.

FWD - Auba, could be a golden boot candidate, Lacazette is going to pick up points playing in front for Arsenal, and Firmino who will hopefully continue his fine form from last season.

Bench - Neves, Stephens and Wan Bissaka

What formation are most people starting with ?
After using a tried and trusted 3-4-3 (sometimes 3-5-2) formation ever since i started playing this game, the game has changed.Seeing little value in the mids and with their being so many attacking defenders and wingbacks that surely 4-3-3 4-4-2 or even 5-3-2 or 5-2-3 is the way to start this season till some cheap midfield or forward gems emerge ?

More value in mids than forwards for sure, can’t see any reason for playing 3 up top unless you select one of the 6.5 or 7 mill forwards as your third pick, but you could have the best premium defender for less ...
