Pre-Season

Weekend friendly round-up: Arnautovic bags brace, Valencia injured

Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) furthered his case for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ frontlines with a brace in West Ham United’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Saturday.

Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) made his debut in the same match, as the Hammers were held to a 2-2 draw by the Championship club.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), who like Arnautovic has been reclassified as a forward in Fantasy Premier League this season, was also on target in Crystal Palace’s 3-1 win over Oxford United.

Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) set up Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) for Liverpool’s opening goal in the 3-1 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday evening. Joel Matip (£5.0m) was forced off early in the first half with a thigh injury.

Dortmund had beaten Manchester City 1-0 a day earlier, with Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Leroy Sane (£9.5m) both getting run-outs for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester United were also in action in the USA, taking on San Jose Earthquakes in California. Jose Mourinho’s side drew the match 0-0 as Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) limped off with a calf problem. Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.5m) both started the match as part of a front three with youngster Tahith Chong.

Rui Patricio (£4.5m) and Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) made their Wolverhampton Wanderers debuts in the 0-0 draw with Bochum on Sunday. Patricio saved two penalties in the subsequent shoot-out defeat.

A largely second-string Everton side also lost on penalties over the weekend after a goalless draw with Lille. A stronger-looking line-up then drew another blank in the 1-0 loss to Porto on Sunday night.

Jonny Evans (£5.0m) and James Maddison (£6.5m) made their Leicester City debuts in the Foxes’ 4-1 win over Notts County, with Demarai Gray (£5.5m) among the scorers.

A Fulham side that featured Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m), Tom Cairney (£5.0m) and debutant Jean Michael Seri (£5.5m) were hammered 4-0 by Lyon.

AFC Bournemouth highlighted their attacking aptitude – and defensive frailties – in a 4-3 win over Levante, with Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) among the Cherries’ scorers.

Shane Duffy (£4.5m) and Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m) limped off as Brighton and Hove Albion slumped to a 2-1 defeat to AFC Wimbledon. Oliver Norwood was on target for the Seagulls from the spot.

Huddersfield Town and Burnley both played two friendlies over the weekend. The Terriers lost 2-0 to Real Betis and 1-0 to Werder Bremen (both matches lasting 45 minutes) in Germany, while Sean Dyche split his squad for the encounters with Macclesfield Town and Curzon Ashton. Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) was on target in the 2-0 victory at Moss Rose, while Robbie Brady (£5.5m) returned from injury in the 5-1 win over the National League North side. Ben Mee (£5.0m) found the back of the net in this second match, with Sam Vokes (£5.5m) grabbing a brace.

Summer signing Josh Murphy (£5.0m) scored Cardiff City’s only goal in the 1-1 draw with Torquay United.

Our Scout Notes on Monday will analyse the weekend’s friendlies in greater depth, taking a closer look at personnel and formations and detailing every single goal-scorer and assist-maker.

Will this attack @LorisKarius ever end? I'm talking about him like so many other goalkeepers. There are many more serious problems in the world f--k! Leave the Kid alone! He's also a person. As we all are!

The August hoodoo is precisely why I think he'll start. Probably wants to put that August nonsense to rest. He's got the fixtures to rack up a score. He looked terrible at the end of the World Cup but I think he was injured. Don't assume September magically transforms him and August inhibits him. That's naive.

Yeah, but there's a first time for everything. Not saying this is the year but one penalty in August and what happens to that theory? It's just so random. Stats or not, seeing so many people believe that August curse is hilarious.

Hughes and costa both better 5m picks than Cairney IMO.

TAA expected to miss at least GW1.

If I was going with no Salah I would 100% be having at least one of Mane or Firmino.

    Foster
    Robbo-Bailly-Pva
    Salah-Sanchez-Lamela-Jota
    Auba-Arni-Wood

    Boruc-Chalobah-Diop-Peltier , 0.5itb

if Sanchez doesn't do the business he can become KDB giving me an extra 0.5 also Lamela can become Mkhi after or even Ramsey after 2 weeks if i do the above move , also none of the subs are set in stone as of yet

So even though one is not allowed to have more than three players from a team in their squad, the game allows you to have four because you got one player in before he moved to said team. Sure? I see nothing wrong with rewarding someone who was an early bird from knowledge or by luck. Having this be only my second season in FPL, it would be great to get confirmation this will slide from those that have had this happen in previous years.

You may ask, "Well what could be done about it"? Just thought if it wasn't on, one could be sent a notice of warning to get one out or get the whole team erased?

This is true, he can have 4 MCI players with this scenario. The problem here is that his next transfer MUST be one of the MCI players out. He can play with four MCI players only as a "dead" team sort of.

Shaw will definitely start... he just looked terrible today. You certainly don’t need 2 Man U defenders at that price.

Also.. 5 at the back leaves little wiggle room to transfer funds around different positions once the season starts. You’ll need point hits for structure changes like that after GW1 starts.

What changes would you suggest to strengthen this team (not including Salah):

    Speroni Tosun Peltier Wan-Bissaka

Zaha is in talks with Tottenham I read earlier. Could be spurs first summer signing which led me away from getting him in just now. Also waiting to see which position he plays in.. whether in the deeper role he is use to or pushed forward like the end of last season.

Mahrez.. I’m going to give him 2 weeks to see if he is nailed. Decent placeholder I think.

Ramsey is the central to Emerys plans at arsenal this season! He will be their key player. A lot has changed since last season at the emirites 😉

Its an extra potential transfer down the line. Having one in this category is risky enough, unless your commited to a early wc or willing to risk taking hits. He already has three, which is risky enough imo.

Been tinkering for a few weeks but this is the 1st 15 I've felt comfortable putting forward for criticism!

    Foster, Fab
    VVD, Bailley, Cedric, Tomkins, Peltier
    Mo, Sane, Mkhi, Hughes, Gunnarson
    Kun, Bobby, Tosun

Plan is to rotate keepers, play Hughes most of the time, Gunnarson & Peltier almost always subs, and rotate Cedric & Tomkins.

    Thoughts?

    Pickford
    Shaw, Robertson, PVA
    Salah, Martial, Mahrez, Costa, Cairney
    Firmino, Auba

    Subs: Ske, Bennett, Cedric, Austin

I quite like this team. Auba can become Kane. Will be happy if two of:
Austin, Costa, Cairney start for their teams.
    Any advices? Thanks!
