Great Expectations

Mkhitaryan’s all-round game and discount price could make him essential

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s all-round game may just make him a near-essential figure in Fantasy Premier League squads this season.

The Armenian’s potential both for goals and assists should make his cost of £7.0m well worth paying, especially in a season where many of the more familiar names in midfield and attack are more expensive.

With just 180 FPL points across two campaigns in English football, now is the time to expect a personal-best total score from Mkhitaryan.

CREATIVITY

There is no doubting that Mkhitaryan’s forte is the ability to provide assists for his team-mates, and his underlying numbers from 2017/18 suggest he’ll be one of Arsenal’s chief creators this term. Even in the first 10 Gameweeks of last season, while he was still a regular starter at Manchester United, only three midfielders created more chances than his 23. Just two of those recorded more than his five assists, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) and David Silva (£8.5m), both with six assists in one more appearance than the Armenian. Upon moving to Arsenal in January, only Mesut Özil (£8.5m) created more chances than Mkhitaryan among Arsenal assets, but the Armenian still provided more assists than his German colleague (four to three).

Where Mkhitaryan really stood out across the season was when it came to minutes per big chance, the most crucial statistic given his game-time was limited to just 20 starts. His 11 big chances created in 1,727 minutes of football averaged out at one every 157 minutes. That was actually better than De Bruyne, who topped the charts both for big chances created (19) and FPL assists (20), but could still only fashion a big chance every 162.3 minutes, compared to Mkhitaryan.

GOALS ON THE SIDE

On top of his creativity, Mkhitaryan also offers a much better goal threat than any of the other midfield options at Arsenal. Of the Gunners assets, only striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) had more shots on goal between Gameweeks 25 and 38, the Gabonese international also the only one of Mkhitaryan’s team-mates to best him for efforts in the box and accuracy too. We recently discovered that Özil had the potential to be Arsenal’s key creator this season, but Mkhitaryan’s ability to combine his similar assist potential with better goal-threat than the German gives him a huge edge as far as FPL is concerned, with a saving of £1.5m.

HOME COMFORTS

Mkhitaryan should benefit from being deployed on the right flank of attacking midfield for an entire campaign in 2018/19, where he is most comfortable. Part of the reason that he struggled to fit in at Manchester United was because he was used in a central number 10 role, but since moving to Arsenal he has switched back out to the right flank. It was in this position that he was so successful back in his Borussia Dortmund days. He has already reaped some of the benefits of a return to the flanks, with Granit Xhaka (£5.5m) the only Arsenal player to attempt more crosses between Gameweek 25 and 38 – and that was a result of the Swiss international’s set-piece responsibilities.

AU-BRO-MEYANG

A full season alongside his former Dortmund colleague Aubameyang will only bring out the best in Mkhitaryan. In the final campaign that the pair were together in Germany (2015/16) at Dortmund they combined for 59 goals and 31 assists between them, their relationship clearly a strong one. That partnership has already been rekindled in part in the latter half of 2017/18. Of the four assists Mkhitaryan supplied since joining Arsenal, half of them were for Aubameyang, who set up one of the Armenian’s two goals in Arsenal colours.

GOOD START

Aside from facing Manchester City and Chelsea in the first two Gameweeks, Arsenal have very appealing fixtures in the early months of 2018/19 which should give Mkhitaryan a clear run at building up confidence. From Gameweek 3 to 10 the Gunners don’t face a single member of last season’s top six. But we shouldn’t necessarily be avoiding Mkhitaryan in Gameweeks 1 and 2. Manchester City are still without their key players as they rest after the World Cup and may name a second-string side at the Emirates on August 12, creating an opportunity for some attacking returns for Arsenal. Meanwhile, Chelsea could take time to adapt to new manager Maurizio Sarri.

I'm coming around to the idea of bringing in Maddison. After Richarlison he's looking the best pick of the mid-priced mids. Looks like he'll play in the number 10 role too. Leicester fans are raving about him too:

We adjusted because of user complaints, surely that's good!

You cherry picked a bit at the end since that was talking about GW1 and GW2, but obviously the point was taken. 'May just make him' doesn't mean he is right now, but could be in the future.

I'm not saying the article didn't have mistakes, but try to give it a bit more of a charitable reading

I take it seriously when users say things like 'The new writers are just not very good'

Fair enough being defensive of my comment on the last page. I’d definitely would be too. There was no humour indicated or intended in that and I’m actually surprised it hasn’t been deleted.

Deulofail’s was the wrong post to be defensive over though, imo. I really don’t think he was bashing the writers.

When I start deleting comments that means I have to get closer to bans and I don't want to have to do that.

I'd like to think that what you said was in the moment and that that's not the style of post you're going to continue writing because it is over the abuse line

Yeah I think that is unfair.

The sentences and paragraphs are well sculted at least, unlike half the articles I see on the internet.

I'm sure a bit of feedback can change a writer's direction and ultimately completely change the reader's perception of a piece, despite a relatively small change.

I have nothing against the writer(s), besides a few decisions made in order to force narratives that skew the truth (and faliure to edit tabloidness out tbh). But I have no doubt of the writers' abilities for this site, at all.

            Keep up the good work

        Yeah that's good.

The issue for me is that the purpose of this website (for me) is to improve my FPL game. Content like this is clearly written from the heart and sensationalised, which means my trust for the website's articles decreases.

I'm not having a go. That's just how it works, isn't it. Need to respect the reader, or you will reap what you sow in the comments. (I don't mean backlash like this; I mean irrational sensationalism like you see in the comment section of tabloids, failure to have poilte discussions etc.)

I've said my piece. Thanks for taking feedback into account 🙂

Nah I get that, that's what the site is for.

I didn't mean to have a go at you back; just felt the need to defend the writer's who will make mistakes, particularly as they're getting used to the tone expected from FFS articles a bit still.

It was the 'the new writers aren't very good' stuff on previous pages, the 'writing has tanked' stuff that I was reacting to and took yours to be jumping on that. Apologies!

As I said somewhere else they're learning the language that the site uses a bit still. I'm more than happy for feedback which I then pass on to them but that kind of stuff is just going to be more divisive. Donald 😀

It's not actually the writing that's the problem. The articles are long and there's a lot in them. The problem is that there has to be another eye cast over it and simple things like the headline sorted.

It's a site with professional writers so you should be defensive to the point of taking note and fixing. It's not like there's 100 articles a day. I'd be less annoyed at the TiC comments and more annoyed with my editor if I had written it.

Of course, when the editor is also the writer, there's a potential for a problem but email to the mods, maybe?

I concur...don't understand how he's being lauded despite never having done anything in 2 different top-six teams over 3 seasons.

The only thing that's outstanding about him is that he's 7.0m, whereas he probably should've been priced at 7.5m like Ramsey.

Personally I'd far rather have Arnie/Zaha for 7.0m and a fodder mid than Mkhi and a fodder forward.

This is my first season on FFS and it's opened my eyes to quite a few things I haven't thought of before - mainly the obsession that 5 atb is optimal.

Surely this is only the case when you are locked into a team for a season with no WCs or block of FTs for changes? It's mainly about having the right players at the right time and adapting well to these to gain the point hauls in my eyes.

    Unless I'm missing something completely?

I do like it but Man City's fixtures are just too good to have only one of their players. After the Arsenal game it would be difficult to choose better fixtures yourself.

I'm sure many will disagree but triple city is essential at the beginning.

      - Pickford to Ryan

    Thoughts?

Begovic Guaita (Currently undecided on these 2 or a 5.0 with a 4.0 sub)
Mendy Bailly Coleman TAA Wan Bissaka
    Salah Silva Ibe Gray Chalobah
    Firmino Aguero Tosun

Thinking of swapping Salah & Gray for Mkhi & Pogba GW2/3 and Tosun for Auba for 3. That is provided Salah's not already banging hattricks in by then...

You are probably right! If Pogba was a guaranteed starter at the beginning & Arsenal had better fixtures GW1&2 i'd have left him out altogether.. Just feel i can make a more balanced team without him in. Also the ridiculous ownership is putting me off of him when perhaps it should be doing the opposite.. Just looking at his stats over the last 5 years or so last season feels a bit of a freak..

Can someone please clarify to me if Tosun has suddenly become a good player over the summer, cos he looked pretty sub-standard last season and is in a lot of teams...?

It’s definitely a wait and see on that one.
I wouldn’t be wanting to gamble on putting him from the start when there’s a couple proven players in the 7 mil bracket...

Strong finish to last season, new manager who is much more attacking than the previous one, full preseason, and great fixtures.

    G2G?

    Ederson

    Speroni Ward 4.0m Stephens

Daniels is a big uncertainty atm due to Bournemouth getting a new left back, I'd personally rather have Cedric or tomkins at that price.
Kdb possibly late back after WC. Firmino needs to be monitored, some think he could miss gw1.

What is you general thought, Auba 1,5 more worth it over Laca?

Ofc time will tell. I fancy both to do well and really like both. But personally it feels like Laca could be gold if he plays centre forward but at the same time I fear Auba could start off with a bang (also seems to be on pens) and it will be more complex to get him in then vice versa. Then again you could have some more expensive midfielder if you go Laca.

But probably safest to start with Auba is my general thought, what do you think?

Post 2 choices. Auba with a mid and Laca with a mid and we can assess which is better.

So Brighton now have Locadia, Izquierdo and Jahanbakhsh but no decent central striker. Wonder how they are going to line up? I know Locadia can play through the middle but he's not an out and out striker.
